Objectives. This study was undertaken to describe the distribution of blood pressures, hypertension prevalence, and associated risk factors among seven populations of West African origin. Methods. The rates of hypertension in West Africa (Nigeria and Cameroon), the Caribbean (Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados), and the United States (metropolitan Chicago, Illinois) were compared on the basis of a highly standardized collaborative protocol. After researchers were given central training in survey methods, population-based samples of 800 to 2500 adults over the age of 25 were examined in seven sites, yielding a total sample of 10 014. Results. A consistent gradient of hypertension prevalence …

Leptin Concentration In Women Is Influenced By Regional Distribution Of Adipose Tissue, Franklyn I. Bennett, Norma Mcfarlane-Anderson, Rainford Wilks, Amy Luke, Richard S. Cooper, Terrence E. Forrester Jan 1997

Leptin Concentration In Women Is Influenced By Regional Distribution Of Adipose Tissue, Franklyn I. Bennett, Norma Mcfarlane-Anderson, Rainford Wilks, Amy Luke, Richard S. Cooper, Terrence E. Forrester

Faculty Publications

Leptin concentrations in humans are increased with obesity, and women have higher leptin concentrations than men. This sex difference reflects the greater fat mass of women. However, there is evidence that factors other than the size of the adipose tissue mass contribute to serum leptin concentrations. This study was undertaken to determine whether anthropometric factors influenced leptin concentrations in our population. Leptin concentrations were measured in 375 persons from a population study of hypertension and diabetes for whom body-composition data (bioelectrical impedance analysis and anthropometry) were available. Serum leptin concentrations were more than four times higher in women than in …

Efficacy Of Bacillus Thuringiensis And Cabbage Cultivar Resistance To Diamondback Moth (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), Paul W. Ivey, Seth J. Johnson Jan 1997

Efficacy Of Bacillus Thuringiensis And Cabbage Cultivar Resistance To Diamondback Moth (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), Paul W. Ivey, Seth J. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Population density estimates were used to determine the effectiveness of a commercial formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner subspp. kurstaki and aizawai (Agree 50 WP®) and host plant resistance in three cabbage cultivars against the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). Cabbage plots treated with agree 50 WP® had significantly fewer larvae per plant compared with untreated ones. The ranking from most to least susceptible of the three main cabbage cultivate grown in Jamaica was 'KY Cross' > 'Early Jersey' > 'Tropicana'. These findings provide evidence that a new cabbage hybrid, 'Tropicana', and products containing effective strains of B. thuringiensis may be successfully used …

Ab Initio Elasticity Of Three High-Pressure Polymorphs Of Silica, Bijaya B. Karki, Lars Stixrude, Jason Crain Jan 1997

Ab Initio Elasticity Of Three High-Pressure Polymorphs Of Silica, Bijaya B. Karki, Lars Stixrude, Jason Crain

Faculty Publications

Full elastic constant tensors of three high-pressure polymorphs of silica: stishovite, CaCl -type and columbite-type (α-PbO structure); are determined at lower mantle pressures from first-principles using the plane wave pseudopotential method within the local density approximation. The calculated zero pressure athermal elastic moduli are within a few percent of the experiments. We find that the elastic properties of silica are strongly pressure dependent. The shear wave velocity decreases rapidly (by 60 %) and the anisotropy increases rapidly (by a factor of five) between 40 and 47 GPa prior to the transition from stishovite to the CaCl structure at 47 GPa. …

Variational Methods, Bounds, And Size Effects For Composites With Highly Conducting Interface, Robert Lipton Jan 1997

Variational Methods, Bounds, And Size Effects For Composites With Highly Conducting Interface, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

New variational principles are developed for the effective conductivity tensor for anisotropic two-phase electric conductors. Here the interface between phases is assumed to be highly conducting. Extra geometric information is encoded into the principles through the solution operators of simpler transport problems. These operators can be expressed as gradients of simple layer potentials with densities supported on phase interfaces or in terms of simple Dirichlet problems inside each phase region. New upper bounds on the effective conductivity are found that depend upon component volume fractions, a surface energy tensor and a scale-free matrix of parameters. This matrix corresponds to the …

Reciprocal Relations, Bounds, And Size Effects For Composites With Highly Conducting Interface, Robert Lipton Jan 1997

Reciprocal Relations, Bounds, And Size Effects For Composites With Highly Conducting Interface, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

We provide a reciprocal relation linking the effective conductivity of a composite with highly conducting phase interfaces to that of a composite with the same phase geometry but with an electrical contact resistance at phase interfaces. A field relationship linking the electric field inside a composite with highly conducting phase interfaces to the current in a composite with contact resistance between phases is found. New size effects exhibited by isotropic particulate suspensions with highly conducting interface are obtained. The effective properties of periodic composites are shown to be monotonically increasing as the size of the period cell tends to zero. …

Three-Species Monomer-Monomer Model: A Mean-Field Analysis And Monte Carlo Study, Kevin E. Bassler, Dana A. Browne Jan 1997

Three-Species Monomer-Monomer Model: A Mean-Field Analysis And Monte Carlo Study, Kevin E. Bassler, Dana A. Browne

Faculty Publications

We study the phase diagram and critical behavior of a one-dimensional three-species monomer-monomer catalytic surface reaction model. Static Monte Carlo simulations are used to roughly map out the phase diagram consisting of a reactive steady state bordered by three equivalent unreactive phases where the surface is saturated with one monomer species. The transitions from the reactive phase are all continuous, while the transitions between poisoned phases are first order. Of particular interest are the bicritical points where the reactive phase simultaneously meets two poisoned phases. A mean-field cluster analysis fails to predict all of the qualitative features of the phase …

Mean-Field Analysis And Monte Carlo Study Of An Interacting Two-Species Reaction Model, K. S. Brown, K. E. Bassler, D. A. Browne

Faculty Publications

We study the phase diagram and critical behavior of an interacting one-dimensional two-species monomer-monomer catalytic surface reaction model with a reactive phase as well as two equivalent adsorbing phases where one of the species saturates the system. The model depends on two parameters: the relative adsorption rates of the two species and a repulsive interaction between like neighbors. A mean-field analysis including correlations up to triplets of sites fails to reproduce the phase diagram found by Monte Carlo simulations. The three phases coexist at a bicritical point whose critical behavior is described by the even branching annihilating random-walk universality class. …

A Construction Of Representations Of Affine Weyl Groups, D. S. Sage Jan 1997

A Construction Of Representations Of Affine Weyl Groups, D. S. Sage

Faculty Publications

Let G be a complex, semisimple, simply connected algebraic group with Lie algebra g. We extend scalars to the power series field in one variable C((π)), and consider the space of Iwahori subalgebras containing a fixed nil-elliptic element of g ⊗ C((π)), i.e. fixed point varieties on the full affine flag manifold. We define representations of the affine Weyl group in the homology of these varieties, generalizing Kazhdan and Lusztig's topological construction of Springer's representations to the affine context.

Does The Jones Polynomial Detect Unknottedness?, Oliver T. Dasbach, Stefan Hougardy Jan 1997

Does The Jones Polynomial Detect Unknottedness?, Oliver T. Dasbach, Stefan Hougardy

Faculty Publications

There have been many attempts to settle the question whether there exist nontrivial knots with trivial Jonespolynomial. In this paper we show that such a knot must have crossing number at least 18. Furthermore we give the number of prime alternating knots and an upper bound for the number of prime knots up to 17 crossings. We also compute the number of different HOMFLY, Jonesand Alexander polynomials for knots up to 15 crossings. © A K Peters, Ltd.

Collision Of Boosted Black Holes, John Baker, Andrew Abrahams, Peter Anninos, Steve Brandt, Richard Price, Jorge Pullin, Edward Seidel

Faculty Publications

We study the radiation from a collision of black holes with equal and opposite linear momenta. Results are presented from a full numerical relativity treatment and are compared with the results from a “close-slow” approximation. The agreement is remarkable, and suggests several insights about the generation of gravitational radiation in black hole collisions. © 1997 The American Physical Society.

Lattice Knot Theory And Quantum Gravity In The Loop Representation, Hugo Fort, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Jan 1997

Lattice Knot Theory And Quantum Gravity In The Loop Representation, Hugo Fort, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We present an implementation of the loop representation of quantum gravity on a square lattice. Instead of starting from a classical lattice theory, quantizing, and introducing loops, we proceed backwards, setting up constraints in the lattice loop representation and showing that they have appropriate (singular) continuum limits and algebras. The diffeomorphism constraint reproduces the classical algebra in the continuum and has as solutions lattice analogues of usual knot invariants. We discuss some of the invariants stemming from Chern-Simons theory in the lattice context, including the issue of framing. We also present a regularization of the Hamiltonian constraint. We show that …

Mass Transfer Cycles In Close Binaries With Evolved Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter Jan 1997

Mass Transfer Cycles In Close Binaries With Evolved Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter

Faculty Publications

We give a global analysis of mass transfer variations in low-mass X-ray binaries and cataclysmic variables whose evolution is driven by the nuclear expansion of the secondary star. We show that limit cycles caused by irradiation of the secondary by the accreting primary are possible in a large class of these binaries. In the high state, the companion transfers a large fraction of its envelope mass on a thermal timescale. In most cases this implies super-Eddington transfer rates and would thus probably lead to common-envelope evolution and the formation of an ultrashort-period binary. Observed systems with (sub)giant secondaries stabilize themselves …

Transients Among Binaries With Evolved Low-Mass Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter Jan 1997

Transients Among Binaries With Evolved Low-Mass Companions, A. R. King, J. Frank, U. Kolb, H. Ritter

Faculty Publications

We show that stable disk accretion should be very rare among low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and cataclysmic variables whose evolution is driven by the nuclear expansion of the secondary star on the first giant branch. Stable accretion is confined to neutron star systems in which the secondary is still relatively massive and to some supersoft white dwarf accretors. All other systems, including all black hole systems, appear as soft X-ray transients or dwarf novae. All long-period neutron star systems become transient well before most of the envelope mass is transferred and remain transient until envelope exhaustion. This complicates attempts to …

Variability Of A Vestigial Structure: First Metacarpal In Colobus Guereza And Ateles Geoffroyi, Robert G. Tague Jan 1997

Variability Of A Vestigial Structure: First Metacarpal In Colobus Guereza And Ateles Geoffroyi, Robert G. Tague

Faculty Publications

A tenet of evolutionary theory is that, under conditions of stabilizing selection, phenotypic variability is inversely related to selection intensity. Correspondingly, a nonfunctional, vestigial structure is expected to be highly variable relative to its functional homologue. This study tests the hypothesis that species with a vestigial pollex, Colobus guereza and Ateles geoffroyi, have a first metacarpal whose length is both highly variable relative to, and poorly correlated with, the lengths of the other metapodials. The results are consistent with the hypothesis, though this combination of traits is also found in Presbytis rubicunda and Presbytis cristata. The latter two species have …

Effects Of Environmental Sodium Chloride On Percent Hatch, Yolk Utilization, And Survival Of Channel Catfish Fry, C. R. Weirich, T. R. Tiersch Jan 1997

Effects Of Environmental Sodium Chloride On Percent Hatch, Yolk Utilization, And Survival Of Channel Catfish Fry, C. R. Weirich, T. R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Only limited research has addressed the effect of salinity on hatching of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus eggs, and no studies have evaluated the effect of salinity on fry development and survival. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of environmental sodium chloride (0, 1, 2, and 4 g/L NaCl) on percent hatch, yolk utilization, and survival of channel catfish fry. Experiments were conducted in recirculating systems using seven egg masses (1-2 d old). Each egg mass was divided into smaller portions which remained undissociated or were dissociated with sodium sulfite (NaSO3). Eggs were incubated until hatching. Wet and dry …

Roosting Behavior And Group Territoriality In American Crows, Donald F. Caccamise, Lisa M. Reed, Jerzy Romanowski, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

Cooperative groups of American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) maintain group territories year-round while often traveling long distances to roost communally at night. Our goal was to discover how territorial crows resolve the conflict between the cohesive nature of group behavior with requirements of dispersal to roost communally. We color-marked crows to study group composition over two years, and radio-tagged crows to study movement among roosts, territories, and feeding areas. Most crows showed diurnal fidelity to the group territory throughout the year. Yet, most birds frequently left territories during the day to forage up to 4 km away. At night, crows roosted …

Changes In Carbohydrate And Nitrogen Relationships During Episodic Growth Of Ligustrum Japonicum Thunb, Jeff S. Kuehny, William B. Miller, Dennis R. Decoteau

Faculty Publications

Rooted cuttings of Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., an episodically growing species, were grown hydroponically in a controlled-environment growth chamber to determine allocation of glucose, mannitol, total soluble sugars, and total protein in mature leaves, flush leaves, steins, and roots. During the 65 days of episodic growth, 43% of the total soluble sugars was glucose and 33% mannitol. Glucose concentrations of mature leaves decreased during the first root growth episode, increased in almost all plant tissue during a shoot growth episode and decreased in all plant tissue at initiation of a second font growth episode. Mannitol concentrations in the roots and stems …

Optimizing Acceptability Of Chicken Nuggets Containing Fermented Cowpea And Peanut Flours, W. Prinyawiwatkul, K. H. Mcwatters, L. R. Beuchat, R. D. Phillips Jan 1997

Optimizing Acceptability Of Chicken Nuggets Containing Fermented Cowpea And Peanut Flours, W. Prinyawiwatkul, K. H. Mcwatters, L. R. Beuchat, R. D. Phillips

Faculty Publications

A mixture design was used to optimize the sensory acceptability (appearance, color, flavor, texture, and overall liking) of chicken nuggets containing flours processed from fermented cowpeas (FCF) and fermented partially defatted peanuts (FPDPF). Flavor and texture acceptability correlated highly with overall liking of nuggets. Products containing 20% FCF or FPDPF alone or in combination were unacceptable. Nuggets containing a mixture of 2.5% FCF and 2.5% FPDPF were as acceptable as the control, with a sweet, chickeny flavor. This suggests market potential for such poultry products.

Semiclassical Approach To The Hydrogen-Exchange Reaction Reactive And Transition-State Dynamics, Sophya V. Garashchuk, F. Grossmann, D. Tannor

Faculty Publications

Scattering matrix elements and symmetric transition-state resonances for the collinear H 2 + H → H + H 2 reaction are obtained using a time-dependent approach. The correlation function between reactant channel wavepackets and product channel wavepackets is used to determine the S-matrix elements. In a similar fashion, autocorrelation functions are used to extract the positions and widths of transition-state resonances. The time propagation of the wavepackets is performed by the improved semiclassical frozen Gaussian method of Herman and Kluk, which is an initial value, uniformly converged method. The agreement between the quantum and semiclassical results is far better …

Chemical Stability Study Of Bace0.9Nd0.1O3−Α High Temperature Proton-Conducting Ceramic, Fanglin Chen, O. Toft Sorensen, Guangyao Meng, Dingkum Peng

Faculty Publications

BaCe0.9Nd0.1O3−a (BCN) ceramic is known to be an excellent high-temperature proton conductor and is a candidate electrolyte for use in solid oxide fuel cells, hydrogen or steam sensors and steam electrolysers. In this work, the chemical stability of BCN was investigated systematically by combining XRD and DTA–TG techniques to study its processing compatibility and its feasibility in potential applications. It was found that above 1200 °C, BCN reacted with alumina or zirconia, leading to the loss of barium and an excess of cerium. In cold water, both sintered BCN disks and powder samples had very …
