Yuen, Hiroyuki Mizuguchi, Yong Hwan Lee, Paul F. Cook, Kosaku Uyeda, Charles A. Hasemann

Faculty Publications

Fructose-6-phosphate,2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (Fru-6-P,2- kinase/Fru-2,6-Pase) is a bifunctional enzyme, catalyzing the interconversion of β-D-fructose-6-phosphate (Fru-6-P) and fructose-2,6-bisphosphate (Fru- 2,6-P2) at distinct active sites. A mutant rat testis isozyme with an alanine replacement for the catalytic histidine (H256A) in the Fru-2,6-Pase domain retains 17% of the wild type activity (Mizuguchi, H., Cook, P. F., Tai, C-H., Hasemann, C. A., and Uyeda, K. (1998) J. Biol. Chem. 274, 2166- 2175). We have solved the crystal structure of H256A to a resolution of 2.4 Å by molecular replacement. Clear electron density for Fru-6-P is found at the Fru-2,6-Pase active site, revealing the important interactions in …

Top Management International Orientation And Small Business Exporting Performance: The Moderating Roles Of Export Market & Industry Factors, Franz T. Lohrke, Geralyn Mcclure Franklin, Vinay Kothari

Faculty Publications

This study examined the relationship between top management team international orientation and small business export performance. Results generally supported the hypotheses that market and industry factors moderate this relationship. Employing a sample of U.S. small business exporters, the study found that top management team international orientation had a greater positive relationship with export performance for firms exporting to countries culturally different and geographically distant from their home country than those exporting to countries culturally similar and geographically proximate to their home countries. In addition, international orientation had a greater positive relationship with export performance for firms competing in multidomestic industries …

-Advance regeneration is frequently inadequate to sufficiently restock the oak component of many bottomland stands, especially on productive sites with high levels of competition. We initiated a study near Beirne, AR to examine the effects of pre-plant control of Japanese honeysuckle Thunberg) and seedling quality on establishment success and vigor of oak reproduction beneath a partial canopy. Nine, 2-acre plots were delineated in the stand that was harvested a residual stocking level of 30 percent in the fall of 1996. Honeysuckle pre-plant control treatments randomly applied to the nine were an Escort application in the spring of 1997, an Escort …

Herbicide And Fertilizer Combinations For Newly Planted Loblolly Pine Seedlings On A Flatwoods Site In Southeastern Arkansas: Year Three Results, Jimmie L. Yeiser

Faculty Publications

Herbicide and fertilizer combinations were tested for enhanced loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedling performance on a chemically prepared, flatwoods site in southeastern AR. Fertilizer treatments were selected combinations of 40,50, and 50 pounds per acre of elemental N, P, or K, respectively. Arsenal+Oust (4 ounces+2 ounces per treated acre) was applied for herbaceous weed control (HWC). One treatment of herbicide or herbicide+ fertilizer was applied per year; the same rate was used for years one (1996) and two (1997). After three growing seasons, the greatest seedling volume resulted from two treatments of HWC+NPK fertilizer. Two treatments of HWC alone …

Constraints On H0 From The Central Velocity Dispersions Of Lens Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Faculty Publications

We employ Schwarzschild's method of the orbit modeling to constrain the mass profiles of the central lens galaxies in Q0957+561 and PG 1115+080. We combine the measured, central projected stellar velocity dispersions of these galaxies with the self-similar radial profiles of the rms velocity and of the Gauss-Hermite moment h4 observed in nearby galaxies for 0 lesssim R lesssim 2Reff. For Q0957+561, we find a 16% uncertainty in the galaxy mass and formal 2 σ limits on the Hubble constant of H0=61$\mathstrut{^{+13}_{-15}}$ km s-1 Mpc-1. For PG 1115+080, we find that none of the viable lens models can be ruled …

Burnett Description For Plane Poiseuille Flow, Alejandro Garcia, F. Uribe

Faculty Publications

Two recent works have shown that at small Knudsen number ~K! the pressure and temperature profiles in plane Poiseuille flow exhibit a different qualitative behavior from the profiles obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations. Tij and Santos [J. Stat. Phys. 76, 1399 (1994)] used the Bhatnagar-Gross-Kook model to show that the temperature profile is bimodal and the pressure profile is nonconstant. Malek-Mansour, Baras, and Garcia [Physica A 240, 255 (1997)] qualitatively confirmed these predictions in computer experiments using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC). In this paper we compare the DSMC measurements of hydrodynamic variables and non-equilibrium fluxes with numerical …

Spatial And Temporal Factors In Estimating The Potential Of Ride-Sharing For Demand Reduction, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Da-Jie Lin Jan 1999

Spatial And Temporal Factors In Estimating The Potential Of Ride-Sharing For Demand Reduction, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Da-Jie Lin

Faculty Publications

Traffic congestion has been a pervasive problem in many urban areas of this country. This paper studies the potential of carpooling among unrelated partners (i.e., inter-household carpooling) for demand reduction during peak commute hours. Basic questions about this potential include the following. Can the current population density, origin-destination distribution, tolerable pick-up and drop-off delays, departure time distribution, and the tolerance for deviation from preferred departure time support a sizable carpooling population that can make a significant contribution to traffic demand reduction? Could the proportion of long trips that are likely candidates for carpooling (e.g., those long trips with same O-D) …

Questions Of Race And Gender: Evangelina Cisneros And The Spanish-Cuban-American War, Anne Fountain

Faculty Publications

At the turn of the century, the name "Evangelina Cisneros" (known in Cuba as Evangelina Cossio) was a household term throughout the United States. Newspapers and books described her daring escape from a Havana prison, and pleas on her behalf flourished--including a request for clemency by Queen Victoria and an eloquent letter from the wife of Jefferson Davis. Although the Cisneros saga has all but disappeared in the general historical references to the eighteen nineties, her prison predicament and her prominence in the press of the times reflect fundamental issues of race and gender that are part of the socio-political …

Caudal Distraction By Rat Snakes (Colubridae, Elaphe): A Novel Behavior Used When Capturing Mammalian Prey, Stephen J. Mullin

Faculty Publications

Caudal movement in snakes may serve either a predatory (e.g., caudal luring) or defensive (eg., rattling, aposematism) function. I describe a new behavioral pattern of tail movement in snakes. Gray rat snakes (Elaphe obsoleta spiloides) foraging on small mammals (Mus domesticus) moved their tails in an erratic, whiplike fashion after detecting their prey in the vicinity. The thrashing movement in the horizontal plane was audibly and visually obvious, resulting in displacement of leaf litter around the tail. All subjects displayed the behavior, but not in all foraging episodes. Shorter durations of caudal distraction resulted in greater …

Does Nonrandom Nest Placement Imply Nonrandom Nest Predation?: A Reply, Robert J. Cooper, R. Randy Wilson, Gary D. Zenitsky, Stephen J. Mullin, Jennifer A. Dececco, Matthew R. Marshall, Dorothy J. Wolf, Lars Y. Pomara

Faculty Publications

In response to the critique by Schmidt and Whelan (Condor 101 (4): 916-920, 1999), we find that the relationship between nest success and tree selectivity is dependent upon inclusion or exclusion of particular tree species, whether or not years are pooled, and the selectivity index used. We question their use of point estimates of nest success with extremely high variances, defend our index, question the application of the Chesson (1983) index to our data, and explain the need to analyze years separately. Bottomland hardwood forest systems are extremely variable; hydroperiods alter the suitability of nesting substrates, availability of alternative food, …

Iron-Induced Oxidative Stress In Erythrocyte Membranes Of Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetic Nigerians, Gbolahan W. Okunade, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Olufunso O. Olorunsogo

Faculty Publications

The presence of higher level of endogenous free radical reaction products in the erythrocyte ghost membrane (EGM) of Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) subjects compared with that of normal healthy controls has been demonstrated. The EGMs of NIDDM subjects were also shown to be more susceptible to exogenously generated oxidative stress than those of normal healthy individuals. The decreased level of reactive thiol groups in the EGM of NIDDM individuals supported this observation. We propose that the presence of significant levels of non-heme iron in the EGM of NIDDM subjects is an indication of the potential for iron-catalysed production of hydroxy …

Reversal Of Sodium Arsenite Inhibition Of Rat Liver Microsomal Ca2+ Pumping Atpase By Vitamin C, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Gbolahan W. Okunade, Olufunso O. Olorunsogo

Faculty Publications

Sodium arsenite (NaAsO2), at 10% of its median lethal dose, was administered to rats with and without vitamin C pretreatment. Liver microsomal fraction was isolated and the activity of Ca2+-ATPase was assayed. Sodium arsenite was found to inhibit the activity of the liver microsomal Ca2+-ATPase to 50% to that of control rats. The specific activity of the enzyme in rats administered sodium arsenite with vitamin C pretreatment was not significantly different from that of control rats.

No-Drop Prosecution Of Domestic Violence: Just Good Policy, Or Equal Protection Mandate?, Kalyani Robbins Jan 1999

No-Drop Prosecution Of Domestic Violence: Just Good Policy, Or Equal Protection Mandate?, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications

Domestic violence is a problem that must be dealt with for what it is: a criminal act. The only way to effectively diminish it is through the full force of the criminal justice system, which must treat domestic violence the same as it treats crime by strangers. The purpose of this note is to argue that aggressive prosecution of domestic violence-at least to the same extent that other violent crimes are prosecuted-is mandated by the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Part I will examine the extent of the problems that pervade the criminal justice system, both historically and …

What’S The Monetary Value Of Your Premerchantable Timber?, Steven H. Bullard, Tom Monaghan Jan 1999

What’S The Monetary Value Of Your Premerchantable Timber?, Steven H. Bullard, Tom Monaghan

Faculty Publications

"Premerchantable" timber is not yet merchantable-in most cases this means the trees are too small to be sold for pulpwood or other commercial products. Sometimes referred to as ''precommercial" or ''immature," timber stands with average tree diameters less than five inches occupy over 50 million acres in the South-an area roughly the size of North and South Carolina combined .

Wildlife Linkages: Volumes And Values Of Residual Timber In Riparian Zones In Eastern Texas, Gary Allen Burns, R. Montague Whiting Jr., George M. Legrande, James G. Dickson

Faculty Publications

In regenerating southern pine, maintenance of riparian zones (RZs) is a major land concession for soil and water protection and wildlife habitat enhancement. However, there are few data quantifying the volume and value of residual timber in such areas. We inventoried merchantable timber in nine RZs of three widths in sapling-class East Texas pine plantations. Present, discounted, and projected volumes and values of residual timber were determined. Average per-acre volumes of narrow, medium, and wide RZs were 337, 1438, and 2542 board feet (Doyle log rule) and 4.6, 8.2, and 7.2 cords, respectively. At US $154.00 and US $57.00 per …

Financial Analysis Of Pruning Combined With Low Density Management Of Southern Yellow Pine In East Texas: An Assessment, Jayson F. Tate, A. Gordon Holley, Leslie A. Dale, Gary D. Kronrad

Faculty Publications

Time study was conducted on pruning of research plots in a IZyear-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantation thinned to 58 square feet basal area (190 trees) per acre. Pruning times with labor and equipment costs were used to determine per acre and per tree pruning costs. Pruning costs were used to find values necessary to break-even on a pruning investment. Soil expectation value (SEV) calculations were used to compare profitability of management utilizing heavy thinning with pruning to traditional management regimes. Calculations were performed using a current hourly wage of $8.00, stumpage price of $400.00, per thousand board feet (MBF) …

Four-Year Growth Results From 16 Year Old Intensively Managed Low Density Loblolly Pine Plantations, A. Gordon Holley, Leslie A. Dale, Gary D. Kronrad

Faculty Publications

In 1994 eighty four permanent research plots were established in two twelve year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantations in East Texas. Plots differed in relation to: soil-site type, density of trees per acre, fertilization treatments, and competing vegetation control. Three levels of thinning treatments reduced the basal areas to 36,60, and 84 square feet of basal area (approximately 100,200, and 300 stems, respectively) per acre. All residual trees were pruned to a height of 25 feet. Plots were re-measured in 1995, 1996, and 1998. Significant differences in diameter and height growth rates were detected in 1996 and 1998. Average diameter …

Management Of Droughty Site: Typic Quartzipsamments, Ecological Considerations, David Kulhavy, W. G. Ross, L. Allen Smith, R. R. Cahal

Faculty Publications

Pine plantations on Typic Quartzipsamments in East Texas are difficult to establish. Forest management options following clearcutting are limited. A 12 year regeneration study of the growth and survival of loblolly, Pinus faeda, L. shortleaf, P. echinata Mill., slash, f. elliofii Engelm and longleaf pines P. pa/u&is Mill. was conducted to determine optimum tree species and treatments for reforestation. With successful regeneration also comes insects and pathogens. Impacts of the Nantucket pine tip moth, Rhyacionia frusfrana, (Comstock) and the Texas leaf-cutting ant, Affa texana, (Buckley) will be discussed in the context of droughty site management.

Landtype And Vegetative Classification Of The Sipsey Wilderness, Alabama, Brian P. Oswald, Thomas H. Green

Faculty Publications

The Sipsey Wilderness was established in 1975 and expanded in 1988 to 11812 hectares. Prior to and since establishment, no classification of either landtypes or existing vegetation was performed to provide baseline information on present wilderness communities and future changes in community structure as the result of natural processes or anthropogenic impacts. 220 different stands were identified through existing aerial photos and topographic maps, and plots within each stand established and measured for landtypes, understory vegetation and overstory vegetation. Descriptions of landtypes and vegetative communities are reported.
