Online Auctions, Michael N. Huhns, José M. Vidal May 1999

Online Auctions, Michael N. Huhns, José M. Vidal

Faculty Publications

Auctions on the Internet can involve not only consumers, but also businesses. They can form dynamically and enable the exchange of goods much as stock exchanges manage the buying and selling of securities. But because auctions have a wide scope and a short lifetime, the opportunistic behavior needed for successful interaction requires agents to both participate in and manage auctions. The article focuses on the use of software agents in such Internet based auctions

The Mycobactericidal Efficacy Of Orthophthalaldehyde And The Comparative Resistances Of Mycobacterium Bovis, Mycobacterium Terrae, And Mycobacterium Chelonae, Richard A. Robison, Adam W. Gregory, G. Bruce Schaalje, Jonathan D. Smart May 1999

Smart

Faculty Publications

Objectives: To assess the mycobactericidal efficacy of an agent relatively new to disinfection, ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA) and to compare the resistances of three Mycobacterium species. Mycobacterium bovis (strain BCG) was compared with Mycobacterium chelonae and Mycobacterium terrae to investigate the feasibility of using either of the latter two species in tuberculocidal testing. M chelonae (a rapid grower) and M terrae (an intermediate grower) both grow faster and are less virulent than M bovis (a slow grower).

Modes And Quasi-Modes For M = 1,2 In A Gyrokinetic Model For A Non-Neutral Plasma, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer May 1999

Modes And Quasi-Modes For M = 1,2 In A Gyrokinetic Model For A Non-Neutral Plasma, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Modes and quasi-modes for m = 1,2 are studied in a gyro-kinetic model for a pure-electron plasma. Only z-independent perturbations are considered. Numerical methods are used to solve the relevant differential equations for smooth, analytic density profiles. Different temperatures and representative profiles are considered and comparison is made with the familiar cold fluid model from which the results depart but little, except at higher temperatures. A continuum component to the spectrum, present in the cold-fluid model, remains in the gyro-kinetic model to the order considered.

Ultrasonic Enhancement Of Antibiotic Action On Escherichia Coli Biofilms: An In Vivo Model, Andrea M. Rediske, Beverly L. Roeder, Maren K. Brown, Jared L. Nelson, Rachel L. Robison, David O. Draper, G. Bruce Schaalje, Richard A. Robison, William G. Pitt May 1999

Ultrasonic Enhancement Of Antibiotic Action On Escherichia Coli Biofilms: An In Vivo Model, Andrea M. Rediske, Beverly L. Roeder, Maren K. Brown, Jared L. Nelson, Rachel L. Robison, David O. Draper, G. Bruce Schaalje, Richard A. Robison, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

Biofilm infections are a common complication of prosthetic devices in humans. Previous in vitro research has determined that low-frequency ultrasound combined with aminoglycoside antibiotics is an effective method of killing biofilms. We report the development of an in vivo model to determine if ultrasound enhances antibiotic action. Two 24-h-old Escherichia coli (ATCC 10798) biofilms grown on polyethylene disks were implanted subcutaneously on the backs of New Zealand White female rabbits, one on each side of the spine. Low-frequency (28.48-kHz) and low-power-density (100- and 300-mW/cm2) continuous ultrasound treatment was applied for 24 h with and without systemic administration of gentamicin. The …

The Probability Density Of Spectral Estimates Based On Modified Periodogram Averages, David G. Long, Paul E. Johnson May 1999

The Probability Density Of Spectral Estimates Based On Modified Periodogram Averages, David G. Long, Paul E. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Welch's (1967) method for spectral estimation of averaging modified periodograms has been widely used for decades. Because such an estimate relies on random data, the estimate is also a random variable with some probability density function. Here, the PDF of a power estimate is derived for an estimate based on an arbitrary number of frequency bins, overlapping data segments, amount of overlap, and type of data window, given a correlated Gaussian input sequence. The PDFs of several cases are plotted and found to be distinctly non-Gaussian (the asymptotic result of averaging frequency bins and/or data segments), using the Kullback-Leibler distance …

Postlaunch Sensor Verification And Calibration Of The Nasa Scatterometer, David G. Long, Wu-Yang Tsai, James E. Graf, Carroll Winn, James N. Huddleston, R. Scott Dunbar, Michael H. Freilich, Frank J. Wentz, W. Linwood Jones

Faculty Publications

Scatterometer instruments are active microwave sensors that transmit a series of microwave pulses and measure the returned echo power to determine the normalized radar backscattering cross section (sigma-0) of the ocean surface from which the speed and direction of near-surface ocean winds are derived. The NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) was launched on board the ADEOS spacecraft in August 1996 and returned ten months of high-quality data before the failure of the ADEOS spacecraft terminated the data stream in June 1997. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the NSCAT instrument and sigma-0 computation and to describe the …

Faculty Publications

To study the effect of substrate addition on short term bacterial population dynamics and species composition in seawater mesocosms were maintained with water collected off Scripps Pier (La Jolla, California USA) Protein enrichment (BSA) triggered a dynamic response from the microbial food web, whereas enrichment with starch had no effect. In the protein enriched mesocosm the number of both nucleoid-containing cells and metabolically active cells increased by 3.0 X 105 cells ml-1 from Day 1 to Day 4 In the same time period the density of a set of 31 phylogenetically different bacteria (α- and g-Proteobactena as well …

A Reanalysis Of The Ultraviolet Extinction From Interstellar Dust In The Large Magellanic Cloud, K. A. Misselt, Geoffrey C. Clayton, Karl D. Gordon

Faculty Publications

We have reanalyzed the Large Magellanic Cloud's (LMC) ultraviolet (UV) extinction using data from the IUE final archive. Our new analysis takes advantage of the improved signal-to-noise ratio of the IUE NEWSIPS reduction, the exclusion of stars with very low reddening, the careful selection of well-matched comparison stars, and an analysis of the effects of Galactic foreground dust. Differences between the average extinction curves of the 30 Dor region and the rest of the LMC are reduced compared with previous studies. We find that there is a group of stars with very weak 2175 Å bumps that lie in or …

First Observations Of An R Coronae Borealis Star With The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph: Ry Sagittarii Near Maximum Light, Geoffrey C. Clayton, T. R. Ayres, Warrick A. Lawson, John S. Drilling, P. Woitke, Martin Asplund

Faculty Publications

We describe the far-UV (1140-1740 Å) spectrum of the hydrogen-deficient R Coronae Borealis (RCB) star RY Sgr, obtained near maximum light (pulsational phase ≯0.1) by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on Hubble Space Telescope. The far-UV spectrum shows a photospheric continuum rising steeply toward longer wavelengths and two prominent emission features at the shorter wavelengths: C II λ1335 and Cl I λ1351 (the latter is radiatively fluoresced by the 10 times stronger C II multiplet). We also find evidence for CO A-X 4th-positive system absorption band heads and possible weak CO fluorescent emissions pumped by C II λ1335, but …

Portfolio Assessment In Aerodynamics, Nikos J. Mourtos Apr 1999

Portfolio Assessment In Aerodynamics, Nikos J. Mourtos

Faculty Publications

A new way of assessing student learning in an aerodynamics course through the use of portfolios is presented. The approach is portable to any engineering course, with a few modifications depending on content. The main idea is to allow students more responsibility for their own learning. Instead of having everyone in the class perform identical activities (homework, experiments, projects, tests, etc.), a cadre of assignments is made available to them. Students choose and perform (within reason) the ones that suit them better in terms of their own strengths and learning styles. The ultimate goal is for each student to demonstrate …

Harming Future Persons: Obligations To The Children Of Reproductive Technology, Philip G. Peters Jr. Apr 1999

Harming Future Persons: Obligations To The Children Of Reproductive Technology, Philip G. Peters Jr.

Faculty Publications

Two paradigms dominate contemporary ethical and legal debate about the risks posed to children who owe their lives to reproductive technology. One asks whether the children have lives so tragic that life itself is harmful. The other approach asks whether children so conceived are likely to enjoy a minimally decent existence. Although the two approaches have quite different analytic foundations, they share one crucial trait. Each concludes that children who owe their lives to reproductive technology are harmed only when that technology causes genuinely catastrophic injuries.Because these conventional paradigms define harmful conduct exclusively by reference to the magnitude of the …

The Value Of Open Market Repurchases Of Closed-End Fund Shares, Gary E. Porter, Rodney L. Roenfeldt, Neil W. Sicherman Apr 1999

The Value Of Open Market Repurchases Of Closed-End Fund Shares, Gary E. Porter, Rodney L. Roenfeldt, Neil W. Sicherman

Faculty Publications

The authors illustrate the value to shareholders when closed-end funds repurchase shares at a discount from net asset value. Repurchases increase share price even when there is no asymmetric information concerning the value of the underlying assets and the percentage discount remains unchanged following the repurchase. Expected gains to shareholders are derived from capturing the discount on the assets associated with the shares repurchased. In an analysis of 27 open market repurchase announcements by closed-end funds, the regression coefficient estimate that measures the association between the actual excess return and the expected increase in share price is essentially 1.0.

A Statistical Treatment Of The Gamma-Ray Burst "No Host Galaxy" Problem: Ii. Energies Of Standard Candle Bursts, David L. Band, Dieter H. Hartmann, Bradley E. Schaefer Apr 1999

A Statistical Treatment Of The Gamma-Ray Burst "No Host Galaxy" Problem: Ii. Energies Of Standard Candle Bursts, David L. Band, Dieter H. Hartmann, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

With the discovery that the afterglows after some bursts are coincident with faint galaxies, the search for host galaxies is no longer a test of whether bursts are at cosmological distances, but rather a test of particular cosmological models. The methodology we developed to investigate the original "no host galaxy" problem is equally valid for testing different cosmological models and is applicable to the galaxies coincident with optical transients. We apply this methodology to a family of models where we vary the total energy of standard candle bursts. We find that total isotropic energies of E < 2 × 1052 ergs are ruled out, while E ∼ 1053 ergs is favored.

Ab Initio Study Of The Elastic Behavior Of Mgsio3 Ilmenite At High Pressure, Cesar R.S. Da Silva, Bijaya B. Karki, Lars Stixrude, Renata M. Wentzcovitch Apr 1999

Ab Initio Study Of The Elastic Behavior Of Mgsio3 Ilmenite At High Pressure, Cesar R.S. Da Silva, Bijaya B. Karki, Lars Stixrude, Renata M. Wentzcovitch

Faculty Publications

We investigate the athermal high pressure behavior of the elastic properties of MgSiO ilmenite up to 30 GPa using the ab initio pseudopotential method. Our results at zero pressure are in good agreement with single-crystal elasticity measurements. The elastic anisotropy is shown to decrease slightly under compression and hence to remain substantial (25 to 20% shear wave anisotropy and 16 to 10% longitudinal wave anisotropy) over the pressure regime studied. The directions of fastest and slowest wave propagation are found to change slightly with pressure as determined by the pressure dependence of c and c . Comparisons with the elastic …
