An Empirical Study Of Sample-Selection Bias In Indices Of Commercial Real Estate, Henry J. Munneke, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2000

An Empirical Study Of Sample-Selection Bias In Indices Of Commercial Real Estate, Henry J. Munneke, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

Real estate price indices based solely on samples of sold properties may not accurately represent the population of properties due to potential sample-selection bias. This study addresses this potential for sample-selection bias in the construction of commercial price indices within the context of the Phoenix area of®ce market. The empirical analysis con®rms the presence of sample-selection bias in the estimation of the total price equation. However, within this sample, the price indices generated after correcting for sample-selection bias do not appear signi®cantly different from those that do not consider selectivity bias.

Studies On The Capacitance Of Nickel Oxide Films: Effect Of Heating Temperature And Electrolyte Concentration, Venkat Srinivasan, John W. Weidner Jan 2000

Studies On The Capacitance Of Nickel Oxide Films: Effect Of Heating Temperature And Electrolyte Concentration, Venkat Srinivasan, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

Nickel oxide films were prepared by electrochemically precipitating the hydroxide and heating it in air to form the oxide. The resulting oxide films behave as a capacitor. The capacitance of the oxide depends on the heating temperature, showing a maximum at 300°C. The mechanism of charge storage was studied by measuring the capacitance and surface area as a function of heating temperature, and the capacitance in different electrolytes and potential windows. The charge-storage mechanism is believed to be a surface redox reaction involving adsorbed hydroxyl ions.

Faculty Publications

A new Zn-Ni-Cd plating process was developed which offers a unique way of controlling and optimizing the Ni and Cd contents in the final deposit. Zinc-nickel-cadmium alloy was deposited from a 0.5 M NiSO4 + 0.2 M ZnSO4 bath in the presence of 0.015 M CdSO4 and 1 g/L nonyl phenyl polyethylene oxide. Using this process a Zn-Ni-Cd ternary alloy, with a higher nickel content as compared to that obtained from conventional Zn-Ni baths, was synthesized. The Zn-Ni-Cd alloy coatings deposited from an electrolyte containing 0.015 M (0.3%) CdSO4 has a Zn to Ni ratio of …

Ni-Composite Microencapsulated Graphite As The Negative Electrode In Lithium-Ion Batteries Ii: Electrochemical Impedance And Self-Discharge Studies, P. Yu, James A. Ritter, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

Electrochemical impedance and self-discharge studies were carried out to investigate lithium intercalation into bare and Ni-coated KS10 graphite. Values of the charge-transfer resistances, exchange current densities, surface film resistances, and lithium-ion diffusion coefficients as functions of the state of charge (SOC) all favored the 10 wt % Ni composite KS10 graphite over bare KS10 graphite when these materials were used as the negative electrode in a Li-ion cell with mixed organic electrolyte. The charge-transfer resistances were always lower and gave rise to between 26 and 27% larger exchange current densities, which increased from 137 to 614 mA/g as the SOC …

Cardiovascular Disease Prevention By Sports: Myth Or Reality?, Maria João C. A. Almeida, Steven N. Blair

Faculty Publications

Low levels of physical activity and fitness substantially increase risk of several chronic diseases, reduce longevity, and lead to loss of function. The strength and relation of inactivity to health problems and the high prevalence of sedentary habits in most countries of the world make lack of exercise a major public health problem. Fortunately, there is now good consensus regarding public health recommendations for physical activity from many important medical, scientific, and public health organizations. Recent research on physical activity interventions provides additional approaches to helping sedentary adults become more physically active.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery With Electrolyte Flow, W. B. Gu, C. Y. Wang, John W. Weidner, Rudolph G. Jungst, Ganesan Nagasubramanian Jan 2000

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery With Electrolyte Flow, W. B. Gu, C. Y. Wang, John W. Weidner, Rudolph G. Jungst, Ganesan Nagasubramanian

Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional model is developed to simulate discharge of a lithium/thionyl chloride primary battery. As in earlier one-dimensional models, the model accounts for transport of species and charge, and electrode porosity variations and electrolyte flow induced by the volume reduction caused by electrochemical reactions. Numerical simulations are performed using a finite volume method of computational fluid dynamics. The predicted discharge curves for various temperatures show good agreement with published experimental data, and are essentially identical to results published for one-dimensional models. The detailed two-dimensional flow simulations show that the electrolyte is replenished from the cell head space predominantly through the …

Faculty Publications

It is shown that an electrodeposited Zn-Ni-Cd alloy coating produced from sulfate electrolyte inhibits the discharge of hydrogen on carbon steel. The newly developed ternary alloys have approximately ten times higher corrosion resistance when compared to a Zn-Ni alloy. Hydrogen permeation characteristics of Zn-Ni-Cd alloy coatings were studied and compared with those of a bare and a Zn-Ni alloy coated steel. The transfer coefficient, a, exchange current density, io, thickness dependent adsorption-absorption rate constant, k0, recombination rate constant, k3, surface hydrogen coverage, θH, were obtained by applying a mathematical model to experimental results. Alloys obtained from baths containing higher concentration …

Modeling Lithium Intercalation Of A Single Spinel Particle Under Potentiodynamic Control, Dong Zhang, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White Jan 2000

Modeling Lithium Intercalation Of A Single Spinel Particle Under Potentiodynamic Control, Dong Zhang, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is presented for the lithium intercalation of a single spinel particle as a microelectrode under the stimulus of a cyclic linear potential sweep. The model includes both lithium diffusion within the particle and kinetics at the particle/electrolyte interface. The model is used to predict that peak current densities depend linearly on the scan rate to a certain power with a constant term, which is different from the predicted peak current density for a conventional redox system.

Shrinking Core Model For The Discharge Of A Metal Hydride Electrode, Venkat R. Subramanian, Harry J. Ploehn, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A shrinking core model is presented for the galvanostatic discharge of a metal hydride particle. A quantitative criterion for when the shrinking core can be completely neglected or approximated by a pseudosteady-state solution is presented. The effect of shrinking of the core on the discharge behavior of a metal hydride particle is also studied.

In Western Shoshoni, a Uto- Aztecan language spoken in northern Nevada, coronal obstruents are found in distributional patterns which depend on the presence or absence of a preceding front vowel ([i] or [e]). In the pattern I refer to as FRONTING, alveolar stops alternate with dental stops - dental stops occur following front vowels (la), while alveolar stops occur elsewhere (lb); this pattern is common to all dialects:

Reclaiming The "Creatures Of The State": Contracting For Child Custody Decisionmaking In The Best Interests Of The Family, E. Gary Spitko Jan 2000

Reclaiming The "Creatures Of The State": Contracting For Child Custody Decisionmaking In The Best Interests Of The Family, E. Gary Spitko

Faculty Publications

Arbitration has great potential utility for promoting family autonomy. Parents in a fracturing family might utilize arbitration to select both the decisionmaker and the legal standards to guide that decisionmaker in resolving their child custody and visitation dispute. In this way, the parents can seek to ensure that the resolution of their child custody and visitation dispute is governed by the values that the family has cherished and lived by.

The present dominant judicial approaches to the enforcement of arbitration agreements and awards with respect to child custody, however, greatly undermine arbitration's utility for promoting family autonomy. Pursuant to the …

Transition Losses In The Electric Power Market: A Challenge To The Premises Underlying The Arguments For Compensation, Lois R. Lupica

Faculty Publications

In this Article, Professor Lois R. Lupica examines whether the electric utility industry, currently j.n the midst of deregulation, ought to sustain the resulting transition losses. Due to the signifi· cant modification of legal rules affecting the electric power market and changes in regulatory policy, the utilities currently have expenditures and expectations that are unrecoverable in a competitive market. In recent years, momentum has moved in the direction of compensating the electric utilities and their investors for these losses. Professor Lupica challenges the arguments for transition loBS recovery and ultimately concludes that the doctrinal premises in support oftransition loss recovery …

Circumvention Of The Bankruptcy Process: The Statutory Institutionalization Of Securitization, Lois R. Lupica Jan 2000

Circumvention Of The Bankruptcy Process: The Statutory Institutionalization Of Securitization, Lois R. Lupica

Faculty Publications

The Article 9 changes address two fundamental issues relevant to securitization transaction participants: (i) the characterization of the asset transfer, and (ii) the clarity and certainty of the process taken to perfect the transferee's interest in the assets. These changes will eliminate some of the uncertainty that asset-backed security investors and securitization originators face. What the Article 9 changes will also do, however, when read in conjunction with the amendments to the Bankruptcy Code, will be to allow certain financial market participants to avoid participation in the bankruptcy process, notwithstanding their provision of financing to a debtor in bankruptcy. A …

Parental Rights Termination Jurisprudence: Questioning The Framework, Jennifer Wriggins Jan 2000

Parental Rights Termination Jurisprudence: Questioning The Framework, Jennifer Wriggins

Faculty Publications

The article analyzes the Supreme Court’s decision in M.L.B. v. S.L.J., 519 U.S. 102 (1996), which held that where a state provides an appeal from a judgment terminating parental rights, it must, under the due process and equal protection clauses provide indigent appellants with a transcript if a transcript is necessary to review the decision. In doing so, it questions the framework used to analyze parental rights termination decisions. Specifically, it questions the sharp line drawn between cases concerning termination of parental rights (in which parents have certain constitutional protections) and cases concerning child custody (in which parents lack those …

Spatio-Temporal Distribution Of Larval Gobiosoma Bosc In Waters Adjacent To Natural And Altered Marsh-Edge Habitats Of Mississippi Coastal Waters, J. Read Hendon, Mark S. Peterson, Bruce H. Comyns

Faculty Publications

Larval naked gobies, Gobiosoma bose, were collected monthly from October 1995 to September 1997 by beam plankton trawl from waters adjacent to natural Juncus/Spartina marsh-edge, natural sandy beach and altered Juncus/Spartina marsh-edge habitats in Mississippi coastal waters. Altered marsh habitats consisted of two bulkheaded stations and one stretch of riprap. Abundances were significantly higher in waters adjacent to natural marsh-edge habitats than in those adjacent to altered habitats in year one (P = 0.011), suggesting that the physical nature of alteration may have caused reduced habitat suitability. Abundances also varied seasonally, with summer conditions of high water temperature, increasing tide …

Assessing The Practicality And Constitutionality Of Alaska's Split-Recovery Punitive Damages Statute, Scott Dodson Jan 2000

Assessing The Practicality And Constitutionality Of Alaska's Split-Recovery Punitive Damages Statute, Scott Dodson

Faculty Publications

In 1997, Alaska responded to its reputation for unusually high punitive awardsby amending its punitive damages statuteto require that 50% of any punitive damages award be deposited into the general fund of the state.Such “split-recovery” statutes attempt to reduce some of the plaintiff's windfall by allocating part of the punitive award to the state.Although the plaintiff shares in the award to compensate her for bringing the punitive claim in the first place, the state receives the balance to use for the public benefit. This Note evaluates the practicality and constitutionality of Alaska’s split- recovery statute. Part I reviews the nature and purpose …
