Ninety-nine percent of all “essential” hypertension can be controlled by using the NoLoCo strategy, without causing any significant side-effects and without an increase in insulin resistance. NoLoCo stands for Norvasc (amlodipine), Lozol (indapamide), and Cozaar (losartan), but the medicines are considered and used in reverse order.

Air quality has important climate and health effects. There is a need, therefore, to monitor air quality both indoors and outdoors. Methods of measuring air quality should be cost-effective if they are to be used widely, and one such method is low-cost sensors (LCS). This study reports on the use of LCSs in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia to measure PM2.5 concentrations inside yurts or “gers”. Some of these gers were part of a non-government agency (NGO) initiative to improve insulating properties of these housing structures. The goal of the NGO was to decrease particulate emissions inside the gers; a secondary result …

Analog Analogies: Intel V. Hamidi And The Future Of Trespass To Chattels, Maureen E. Brady, James Y. Stern

A symposium on great torts cases of the twenty-first century must include Intel Corp. v. Hamidi, the canonical case about whether unwanted e-mail spam sent to a company’s server could give rise to a trespass to chattels claim. While much has been written about Intel, in this Essay, we argue that Intel is as much of a classic for what it reveals about the old-fashioned tort as it is for its more closely examined ruling on “cybertrespass.” The dueling personal property analogies chosen by the majority and dissenting opinions in Intel reveal basic and fundamental disagreements about what …

In the accompanying Comment1, He et al. argue that the determinant role of microbial carbon use efficiency in global soil organic carbon (SOC) storage shown in Tao et al. (2023)2 was overestimated because carbon inputs were neglected in our data analysis while they suggest that our model-based analysis could be biased and model-dependent. Their argument is based on a different choice of independent variables in the data analysis and a sensitivity analysis of two process-based models other than that used in our study. We agree that both carbon inputs and outputs (as mediated by microbial processes) matter when predicting SOC …

Blood stream infections (BSIs) are challenging to rapidly and precisely diagnose. Current clinical diagnostic methods for BSI identification require culturing the blood sample for many hours prior to identifying the bacteria and possible antibiotic resistance. Removing the culturing step from the bacterial identification process of a BSI provides a significant reduction in the processing time, but shifts the rate-limiting step from the growth time to the concentration procedure, since CFU levels in clinical blood samples can be as low as 10 CFU/mL in blood. This study developed a novel whole blood filtration method to concentrate bacteria from a BSI without …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor, and its treatment is further complicated by the high selectivity of the blood–brain barrier (BBB). The scientific community is urgently seeking innovative and effective therapeutic solutions. Liposomes are a promising new tool that has shown potential in addressing the limitations of chemotherapy, such as poor bioavailability and toxicity to healthy cells. However, passive targeting strategies based solely on the physicochemical properties of liposomes have proven ineffective due to a lack of tissue specificity. Accordingly, the upregulation of transferrin receptors (TfRs) in brain tissue has led to the development of TfR-targeted anticancer therapeutics. …

Recommended Separation Distances For 1.3 Ammunition And Explosives, Clint Guymon, Ming Liu, Josephine Covino
Faculty Publications
Separation Distances are used throughout the world to protect people and assets from the potential hazardous effects from propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics. The current separation distances for Hazard Division (HD) 1.3 substances and articles used in the United States, in some cases, may not adequately protect against the effects from heat flux and debris when those substances and articles are ignited in a confined structure. Multiple tests in such a confined scenario with HD 1.3 substances have shown that the heat flux and debris hazards could result in injury at distances beyond the current specified explosives safety separation distance (ESSD). …

Sensor networks collect data that is often contaminated by noise. Therefore, it is often necessary to analyze sensor data to determine if a signal is present. This research project utilizes a machine learning algorithm that is able to detect a signal in the presence of noise. The algorithm incorporates the long short-term memory (LSTM) method to determine the presence or absence of a signal in the midst of white Gaussian noise. This machine learning approach was tested with computer generated data and has an accuracy of at least 98% for signal-to-noise levels greater than -12 dB. Furthermore, this algorithm can …

Nanoparticles with high absorption cross sections will advance therapeutic and bioimaging nanomedicine technologies. While Au nanoshells have shown great promise in nanomedicine, state-of-the-art synthesis methods result in scattering-dominant particles, mitigating their efficacy in absorption-based techniques that leverage the photothermal effect, such as photoacoustic (PA) imaging. We introduce a highly reproducible synthesis route to monodisperse sub-100 nm Au nanoshells with an absorption-dominant optical response. Au nanoshells with 48 nm SiO2 cores and 7 nm Au shells show a 14-fold increase in their volumetric absorption coefficient compared to commercial Au nanoshells with dimensions commonly used in nanomedicine. PA imaging with Au nanoshell …

Transformer neural networks have revolutionized natural language processing by effectively addressing the vanishing gradient problem. This study focuses on applying Transformer models to time-series forecasting and customizing them for a simultaneous multistep-ahead prediction model in surrogate model predictive control (MPC). The proposed method showcases improved control performance and computational efficiency compared to LSTM-based MPC and one-step-ahead prediction models using both LSTM and Transformer networks. The study introduces three key contributions: (1) a new MPC system based on a Transformer time-series architecture, (2) a training method enabling multistep-ahead prediction for time-series machine learning models, and (3) validation of the enhanced time …
Direct Evidence On The Crossover From Bcc To Fcc Stability: A Lattice-Based Aggregation-Volume-Bias Monte Carlo Approach To Polymorphism, Bin Chen
Faculty Publications
A lattice-based version of the aggregation-volume-bias Monte Carlo method that was introduced recently has allowed for the extension of the calculation of the nucleation free energies from liquid clusters to solid clusters. Here, it was used to calculate the nucleation free energies of both bcc and fcc clusters formed by Lennard-Jones particles. Under the simulation conditions considered in this study, a cross-over of the thermodynamic stability from the bcc to the fcc structure was observed directly from the free energy results. In addition, the free energies obtained for both types of clusters were used to extrapolate bulk phase information, including …

Knowledge graphs (KGs) can help enhance recommendations, especially for the data-sparsity scenarios with limited user-item interaction data. Due to the strong power of representation learning of graph neural networks (GNNs), recent works of KG-based recommendation deploy GNN models to learn from both knowledge graph and user-item bipartite interaction graph. However, these works have not well considered the hierarchical structure of knowledge graph, leading to sub-optimal results. Despite the benefit of hierarchical structure, leveraging it is challenging since the structure is always partly-observed. In this work, we first propose to reveal unknown hierarchical structures with a supervised signal detection method and …

With abortion remaining legal in over half of the country and a proliferation of websites offering information on how to access abortion medications, ending an unwanted early-stage pregnancy remains surprisingly easy. That is, easy for those who know where to look. But not all patients have equal access to reliable information. This Article addresses the urgent downstream harms caused by the lack of access to abortion information, particularly among the most vulnerable Americans, and argues that, in view of these consequences, regardless of abortion’s legal status, clinicians have a duty to provide their patients with abortion information.

As a lawyer, I have long been interested in the gap between law and the books and law in practice. In 2008, this curiosity led me to Latin America, where I began studying the impact of the world's most restrictive abortion bans. My first stop was Chile, which at the time banned abortion under all conditions–– there was not even an exception to save women's lives. Raised on the history of what happened when abortion was illegal in the United States prior to Roe v. Wade, I knew asking doctors to share their experiences was one way to gauge the …

The adoption of whole slide image (WSI) scanners in clinical practice was accelerated by US Food and Drug Administration approval in 2017, which allowed primary pathologic diagnoses to be made on scanned images. Images in the digital domain allow the application of pathology artificial intelligence (AI), including clinical decision support with algorithms performing specific diagnoses.1,2 These algorithms, if trained properly, could go beyond the ability of human observation to detect and quantify features that are not recognizable by human perception.1,3,4

Introduction The emergence of Big Data health research has exponentially advanced the fields of medicine and public health but has also faced many ethical challenges. One of most worrying but still under-researched aspects of the ethical issues is the risk of potential biases in data sets (eg, electronic health records (EHR) data) as well as in the data curation and acquisition cycles. This study aims to develop, refine and pilot test an ethical framework-guided instrument for assessing bias in Big Data research using EHR data sets.
Methods and analysis Ethical analysis and instrument development (ie, the EHR bias assessment guideline) …

Across biomes, soil biodiversity promotes ecosystem functions. However, whether this relationship will be maintained under climate change is uncertain. Here, using two long-term warming experiments, we investigated how warming affects the relationship between ecosystem functions and microbial diversity across seasons, soil horizons, and warming duration. The soils in these warming experiments were heated +5 °C above ambient for 13 or 28 years. We measured seven different ecosystem functions representative of soil carbon cycling, soil nitrogen cycling, or nutrient pools. We also surveyed bacterial and fungal community diversity. We found that the relationship between ecosystem function and bacterial diversity and the …

While solution micellization of ionic block copolymers (BCP) with randomly distributed ionization sites along the hydrophilic segments has been extensively studied, the roles of positionally controlled ionization sites along the BCP chains in their micellization and resulting micellar structure remain comparatively less understood. Herein, three amphoteric polypeptoid block copolymers carrying two oppositely charged ionizable sites, with one fixed at the hydrophobic terminus and the other varyingly positioned along the hydrophilic segment, have been synthesized by sequential ring-opening polymerization method. The presence of the ionizable site at the hydrophobic segment terminus is expected to promote polymer association toward equilibrium micellar structures …

In 1976, the California Supreme Court handed down its decision in Marvin v. Marvin, recognizing the enforcement of contract and equitable claims that could be asserted when an unmarried partnership was dissolved. Most states have followed the basic holding in Marvin, although important differences in state law have developed over time. Recently, the Uniform Law Commission has approved a uniform act dealing with these issues, the Uniform Cohabitants' Economic Remedies Act (UCERA)
Much has been written about the rights that unmarried partners can assert against each other. Most of the scholarship has focused on the rights that arise …

Conducting research experiments on plutonium electrorefining is difficult due to the significant hazards and regulations associated with nuclear materials. Finding a surrogate for plutonium electrorefining studies would enable more fundamental research to be conducted. Potential surrogates were first identified by determining the physical properties required to conduct electrorefining at the same conditions commonly used in plutonium electrorefining, a molten metal and molten CaCl2 at 1123 K. Ce-CeCl3, In-InCl3, and Pb-PbCl2 were the only potential surrogates identified using these constraints. Sn-SnCl2 was also tested at these same conditions. More potential surrogates were identified by …

We have conducted a detailed transcriptomic, proteomic and phosphoproteomic analysis of CDK8 and its paralog CDK19, alternative enzymatic components of the kinase module associated with transcriptional Mediator complex and implicated in development and diseases. This analysis was performed using genetic modifications of CDK8 and CDK19, selective CDK8/19 small molecule kinase inhibitors and a potent CDK8/19 PROTAC degrader. CDK8/19 inhibition in cells exposed to serum or to agonists of NFκB or protein kinase C (PKC) reduced the induction of signal-responsive genes, indicating a pleiotropic role of Mediator kinases in signal-induced transcriptional reprogramming. CDK8/19 inhibition under basal conditions initially downregulated a small …

The α-Al2O3(0001)-water interface is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The spectral signatures of the vibrational sum frequency generation (vSFG) spectra of OH stretching mode for water molecules at the interface are related to the interfacial water orientation, hydrogen bond network, and water dissociation process at different water/alumina interfaces. Significant differences are found between alumina surfaces at different hydroxylation levels, namely, Al-terminated and O-terminated α-Al2O3(0001). By calculating the vibrational sum frequency generation spectrum and its imaginary component from AIMD results, the structure of interfacial waters as well as the termination of alumina slab are related to the spectral …

The propagation of a high energy laser through a nearly stagnant absorbing medium is studied. The absorption values and time scale of the problem are such that the laser induces convective heat currents transverse to the beam. These currents couple to the laser via the refractive index, causing time dependent thermal blooming. A numerical method is developed and applied to the model in [ J. Electromagn. Waves Appl. 33, 96 (2019) ], using radial basis functions for spatial differencing, which allows for irregular point spacings and a wide class of geometries. Both the beam and laser-induced fluid dynamics are …

The notion of oxidation number acting as an electron-counting concept is crucial for balancing redox reactions, and for understanding organic and biological redox conversions. Chemical formula methods are widely used for counting oxidation numbers. There are three types of chemical formula methods. They are molecular formula method, structural formula method, and Lewis formula method. Each type has its own rules and procedures, and they are difficult for students to fully understand and remember. In addition, the capability of the molecular formula method to assign mean oxidation number of organic carbons for organic molecules or molecular ions is limited. To overcome …
