Network Simplification Through Oracle Learning, Tony R. Martinez, Joshua Menke, Adam Peterson, Michael E. Rimer May 2002

Network Simplification Through Oracle Learning, Tony R. Martinez, Joshua Menke, Adam Peterson, Michael E. Rimer

Faculty Publications

Often the best artificial neural network to solve a real world problem is relatively complex. However, with the growing popularity of smaller computing devices (handheld computers, cellular telephones, automobile interfaces, etc.), there is a need for simpler models with comparable accuracy. The following research presents evidence that using a larger model as an oracle to train a smaller model on unlabeled data results in 1) a simpler acceptable model and 2) improved results over standard training methods on a similarly sized smaller model. On automated spoken digit recognition, oracle learning resulted in an artificial neural network of half the size …

Optimization By Varied Beam Search In Hopfield Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng May 2002

Optimization By Varied Beam Search In Hopfield Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng

Faculty Publications

This paper shows that the performance of the Hopfield network for solving optimization problems can be improved by a varied beam search algorithm. The algorithm varies the beam search size and beam intensity during the network relaxation process. It consists of two stages: increasing the beam search parameters in the flrst stage and then decreasing them in the second stage. The purpose of using such a scheme is to provide the network with a better chance to find more and better solutions. A large number of simulation results based on 200 randomly generated city distributions of the 10-city traveling salesman …

Nanofatigue Studies Of Ultrathin Hard Carbon Overcoats Used In Magnetic Storage Devices, Xiaodong Li, Bharat Bhushan May 2002

Nanofatigue Studies Of Ultrathin Hard Carbon Overcoats Used In Magnetic Storage Devices, Xiaodong Li, Bharat Bhushan

Faculty Publications

A technique to perform nanofatigue experiments was developed. This technique utilizes a depth-sensing nanoindenter with harmonic force. The nanofatigue behavior of 20 nm thick amorphous carbon coatings was studied. The contact stiffness was monitored continuously throughout the test. The abrupt decrease in the contact stiffness indicates fatigue damage has occurred. The critical load amplitude, below which no fatigue damage occurs, was identified. It was found that the filtered cathodic arc coating exhibits longer fatigue life than a direct ion beam coating. Failure mechanisms of the coatings during fatigue are also discussed in conjunction with the hardness, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness, …

Laurasian Migration Explains Gondwanan Disjunctions: Evidence From Malpighiaceae, Charles C. Davis, Charles D. Bell, Sarah Mathews, Michael J. Donoghue May 2002

Laurasian Migration Explains Gondwanan Disjunctions: Evidence From Malpighiaceae, Charles C. Davis, Charles D. Bell, Sarah Mathews, Michael J. Donoghue

Faculty Publications

Explanations for biogeographic disjunctions involving South America and Africa typically invoke vicariance of western Gondwanan biotas or long distance dispersal. These hypotheses are problematical because many groups originated and diversified well after the last known connection between Africa and South America (≈105 million years ago), and it is unlikely that "sweepstakes" dispersal accounts for many of these disjunctions. Phylogenetic analyses of the angiosperm clade Malpighiaceae, combined with fossil evidence and molecular divergence-time estimates, suggest an alternative hypothesis to account for such distributions. We propose that Malpighiaceae originated in northern South America, and that members of several clades repeatedly migrated into …

[1] Trace elements were measured in the aerosol plume produced by lava‐seawater interactions along the shoreline of Kilauea volcano, Hawaii. Plume concentrations were normalized relative to Hawaiian basalt composition and showed a linear log‐log co‐variation with their emanation coefficient (an indicator of element volatility). Normalized aerosol concentrations also consistently covaried with corresponding normalized concentrations in dilute fumarolic gas from Kilauea volcano and fumarolic gas condensates from Kudryavy and Merapi volcanoes, despite different mechanisms of element volatilization. Conservatively estimated regional ocean deposition rates of Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Mn, Zn, Fe and P were >50 times background rates. Thus, upper ocean …

A measurement of chirp and pulse duration of fifth harmonic of a frequency-doubled Ti:sapphire laser was presented. The photoelectron signal due to cross correlation of harmonics generated by 400 nm blue light and an 800 nm infrared probe pulse, was measured using energy resolved cross-correlation method. Results demonstrated that the technique could be used to characterize the time-frequency behavior of much higher-order harmonics.

Crack-Free Thick Algan Grown On Sapphire Using Aln/Algan Superlattices For Strain Management, J. P. Zhang, H. M. Wang, M. E. Gaevski, C. Q. Chen, Q. Fareed, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan May 2002

Crack-Free Thick Algan Grown On Sapphire Using Aln/Algan Superlattices For Strain Management, J. P. Zhang, H. M. Wang, M. E. Gaevski, C. Q. Chen, Q. Fareed, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan

Faculty Publications

We report on an AlN/AlGaN superlattice approach to grow high-Al-content thick n+-AlGaNlayers over c-plane sapphire substrates. Insertion of a set of AlN/AlGaN superlattices is shown to significantly reduce the biaxial tensile strain, thereby resulting in 3-μm-thick, crack-free Al0.2Ga0.8N layers. These high-quality, low-sheet-resistive layers are of key importance to avoid current crowding in quaternary AlInGaN multiple-quantum-well deep-ultraviolet light-emitting diodes over sapphire substrates.

Note On The Derivative Of The Hyperbolic Cotangent, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell May 2002

Note On The Derivative Of The Hyperbolic Cotangent, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

In a letter to Nature (Ford G W and O'Connell R F 1996 Nature 380 113) we presented a formula for the derivative of the hyperbolic cotangent that differs from the standard one in the literature by an additional term proportional to the Dirac delta function. Since our letter was necessarily brief, shortly after its appearance we prepared a more extensive unpublished note giving a detailed explanation of our argument. Since this note has been referenced in a recent article (Estrada R and Fulling S A 2002 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 35 3079) we think it appropriate that it …

Seasonal Niche Strategy Of The Bloom-Forming Dinoflagellate Heterocapsa Triquetra, R. W. Litaker, P. A. Tester, C. S. Duke, B. E. Kenney, James L. Pinckney, J. Ramus

Faculty Publications

Heterocapsa triquetra is one of the most common bloom-forming dinoflagellates found in estuaries and near shore regions around the world. This work examined the environmental factors associated with 3 separate wintertime H. triquetra blooms in the shallow tidally mixed Newport River estuary, North Carolina, USA. During 2 of the blooms in 1982 and 1983, the estuary was sampled from a fixed, single location every hour for 14 d. During the third study, the estuary was sampled at 9 fixed locations over its entire length each week from late December 1997 through March 1998. This time period included the formation and …

Laplace Transform Of Spherical Bessel Functions, A. Ludu, R. F. O'Connell May 2002

Laplace Transform Of Spherical Bessel Functions, A. Ludu, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

We provide a simple analytic formula in terms of elementary functions for the Laplace transform j̃l(p) of the spherical Bessel function than that appearing in the literature, and we show that any such integral transform is a polynomial of order l in the variable p with constant coefficients for the first l - 1 powers, and with an inverse tangent function of argument 1/p as the coefficient of the power l. We apply this formula for the Laplace transform of the memory function related to the Langevin equation in a one-dimensional Debye model.

Parental Substance Use Disorder And The Risk Of Adolescent Drug Abuse: An Event History Analysis, John P. Hoffmann, Felicia G. Cerbone May 2002

Parental Substance Use Disorder And The Risk Of Adolescent Drug Abuse: An Event History Analysis, John P. Hoffmann, Felicia G. Cerbone

Faculty Publications

A common observation in the research literature is that children of drug-dependent parents are at significantly heightened risk of adolescent drug use, abuse, and dependence. Recent research indicates that several psychological and interpersonal factors may affect the association between parents’ psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD) and drug use risks among adolescents, yet studies have failed to examine explicitly whether these factors moderate the association between PSUD and adolescent substance abuse. This paper explores these potential relationships using longitudinal data from a study that has followed three cohorts of adolescents and their families over a 7-year period. The cohorts are defined …

In-Plane Linear-Displacement Bistable Microrelay, Troy Gomm, Larry L. Howell, Richard H. Selfridge May 2002

In-Plane Linear-Displacement Bistable Microrelay, Troy Gomm, Larry L. Howell, Richard H. Selfridge

Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the Linear Displacement Bistable Mechanism (LDBM) for use in microrelays. The LDBM, thermal actuators, and contacts are integrated to demonstrate a relay design. The performance of the relay is characterized using relay performance metrics, including size (1.92 mm2), contact force (23.4 μN), switching time (340 μs), breakdown voltage (> 475 V), and isolation (> 235 V). The actuation voltage and current are 11 V and 85 mA, respectively. AC characteristics, including contact-to-contact crosstalk and AC isolation are also measured. The testing results demonstrate that it is feasible to use the LDBM as a microrelay and that it …

Modeling The Indoor Mimo Wireless Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace May 2002

Modeling The Indoor Mimo Wireless Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace

Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates the ability of a physically based statistical multipath propagation model to match capacity statistics and pairwise magnitude and phase distributions of measured 4 x 4 and 10 x 10 narrow-band multiple-input multiple-output data (MIMO) at 2.4 GHz. The model is compared to simpler statistical models based on the multivariate complex normal distribution with either complex envelope or power correlation. The comparison is facilitated by computing channel element covariance matrices for fixed sets of multipath statistics. Multipolarization data is used to demonstrate a simple method for modeling dual-polarization arrays.

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds May 2002

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In "Legal Theory and the Rule of Law" Noel Reynolds maintains that the rule of law can be understood as a set of conditions that rational actors would impose on any authority they would create to act in their stead in creating and administering legally binding rules. The authority and obligation associated with law derive from this fundamental convention, and the principles of the rule of law are the conditions of that agreement, which become thereby governing principles to which legislatures, judges, and enforcement agencies can be held in their official actions. These generally recognized standards are inherent in this …

Probabilistic Connections In Relaxation Networks, Dan A. Ventura May 2002

Probabilistic Connections In Relaxation Networks, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

This paper reports results from studying the behavior of Hopfield-type networks with probabilistic connections. As the probabilities decrease, network performance degrades. In order to compensate, two network modifications - input persistence and a new activation function - are suggested, and empirical results indicate that the modifications significantly improve network performance.

A search has been made for lepton-flavor-violating interactions of the type e+p→lX, where l denotes a μ or τ with high transverse momentum, at a center-of-mass energy √s of 300 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. No evidence was found for lepton-flavor violation and constraints were derived on leptoquarks (LQs) that could mediate such interactions. For LQ masses below √s, limits are set on λeq1βlq, where λeq1 is the coupling of the LQ to an electron and a first-generation quark q1 and βlq is the branching ration of the LQ to l …

Maximum Current In Nitride-Based Heterostructure Field-Effect Transistors, A. Koudymov, H. Fatima, Grigory Simin, J. Yang, M. Asif Khan, A. Tarakji, X. Hu, M. S. Shur, R. Gaska

Faculty Publications

We present experimental and modeling results on the gate-length dependence of the maximum current that can be achieved in GaN-based heterostructurefield-effect transistors(HFETs) and metal–oxide–semiconductor HFETs (MOSHFETs). Our results show that the factor limiting the maximum current in the HFETs is the forward gate leakage current. In the MOSHFETs, the gate leakage current is suppressed and the overflow of the two dimensional electron gas into the AlGaN barrier region becomes the most important factor limiting the maximum current. Therefore, the maximum current is substantially higher in MOSHFETs than in HFETs. The measured maximum current increases with a decrease in the gate …

The photon-proton total cross section has been measured in the process e+ p → e+ γp → e+ X with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Events were collected with photon virtuality Q2 < 0.02 GeV2 and average γp center-of-mass energy Wγp = 209 GeV in a dedicated run, designed to control systematic effects, with an integrated luminosity of 49 nb-1. The measured total cross section is σtotγp = 174 ± 1 (stat.) ± 13 (syst.) μb. The energy dependence of the cross section is compatible with parameterizations of high-energy pp and pap data. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Faculty Publications

We present both experimental data and an analytic theory for the de Haas–van Alphen ~dHvA! effect in the two-dimensional organic single-crystal conductor k -(ET)2Cu(NCS)2. We show that the magnetization oscillation pattern and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectrum of our measurements are well described theoretically within the coherent magnetic breakdown (MB) model for a two-dimensional Fermi surface consisting of two open sheets and closed pockets connected by magnetic breakdown centers. The spectrum of Landau quantized energy levels changes substantially due to the MB. Landau bands develop whose bandwidth and relative distance between them oscillate in inverse magnetic field. These oscillations …

Unavoidable Minors Of Graphs Of Large Type, John Dittmann, Bogdan Oporowski Apr 2002

Unavoidable Minors Of Graphs Of Large Type, John Dittmann, Bogdan Oporowski

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study one measure of complexity of a graph, namely its type. The type of a graph G is defined to be the minimum number n such that there is a sequence of graphs G = G0, G1,...,Gn, where Gi is obtained by contracting one edge in or deleting one edge from each block of G/_i, and where G is edgeless. We show that a 3-connected graph has large type if and only if it has a minor isomorphic to a large fan. Furthermore, we show that if a graph has large type, then it has a …

Estimating The Spatial Extent Of Bottom-Water Hypoxia And Habitat Degradation In A Shallow Estuary, Christopher P. Buzzelli, Richard A. Luettich Jr., Sean P. Powers, Charles H. Peterson, Jesse E. Mcninch, James L. Pinckney, Hans W. Paerl

Faculty Publications

Bottom-water hypoxia (≤ 2 mg 1-1 dissolved oxygen [DO]) greatly modifies the benthic habitat of estuaries, depending upon spatial extent, duration, and frequency. Bottom-water hypoxia often develops under conditions of density stratification, which inhibits vertical mixing, and warm temperatures, which enhance biological oxygen demand. Long-term, mid-channel data from the Neuse River Estuary in North Carolina permitted evaluation of how stratification and temperature combined to affect DO concentrations at the bottom. Salinity stratification (DS) and water temperature (T) explained respectively 30 and 23% of the variance in bottom-water DO concentrations. The amount of salinity stratification required to induce bottom-water …

Dijet differential cross sections for the reaction e+ p → e+ + jet + jet + X in the photoproduction regime have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 42.7 pb-. The cross sections are given for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 134 < W < 277 GeV. The differential cross sections as a function of the dijet mass, MJJ, and of the dijet angular variables have been measured for 47 < MJJ < 160 GeV and compared to next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The dijet events in the region 75 < MJJ < 100 GeV have been used to derive a 95% C.L. upper limit on the cross section for Z0 photoproduction of σ e+p→e+Z0X < 5.9 pb. Upper limits on the photoproduction of new heavy resonances decaying into two jets are also presented for masses in the range between 60 GeV and 155 GeV. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
