During late spring through summer of 1994 and 1995, 290 randomly selected stream sites in Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri were sampled once for several parameters including conductivity, turbidity, total phosphorus, nitrate-nitrite nitrogen, the index of biotic integrity, and a habitat index. Based on landscape data from watersheds that were delineated for each sampling location, interrelationships were examined between these water quality parameters and land use/land cover, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and vegetation phenological metrics derived from the NDVI. Statistically significant relationships were found between NDVI values and the derived metrics with the stream condition parameters (r values to …

Linguistic theories distinguish between syntax (sentence form) and semantics (sentence meaning). Correspondingly, recent studies have shown that syntactic and semantic anomalies elicit distinct changes in the event-related brain potential (ERP). However, these results have been obtained with highly artificial methodologies and have not yet been generalized to more natural reading conditions. Here, we recorded ERPs while subjects read a naturalistic prose passage. The subjects either read for comprehension with no other task being assigned or read for comprehension and made acceptability judgments after each sentence. Consistent with prior work and regardless of the subjects’ assigned task, syntactic anomalies elicited a …
Relational And Physical Victimization Within Friendships: Nobody Told Me There'd Be Friends Like These, Nicki R. Crick, David A. Nelson
Relational And Physical Victimization Within Friendships: Nobody Told Me There'd Be Friends Like These, Nicki R. Crick, David A. Nelson
Faculty Publications
In past research, relational and physical forms of peer victimization have been identified that have been shown to be significantly associated with social–psychological maladjustment. These forms of victimization, although studied primarily within the group peer context, also occur within dyadic relationships such as friendships. Gender differences in friend victimization and the association between friend victimization and children's social–psychological adjustment were examined. Results showed that boys were more physically victimized by their friends than were girls. Girls were more relationally than physically victimized by their friends. Friend victimization was related to adjustment difficulties for both boys and girls; however, friend physical …

Embedding Dissipation And Decoherence In Unitary Evolution Schemes, A. R.P. Rau, R. A. Wendell
Faculty Publications
The dissipation and decoherence in unitary evolution schemes of quantum physics was discussed. The master equations of damped, driven two-level system were used in the density matrix. The elements of density matrix were embedded in higher-dimensional Liouville-Bloch equations. The density matrix was solved as a function of time using nonunitary integration.

Polarizationeffects have been studied in GaN/AlGaN multiple quantum wells(MQWs) with different c-axis orientation by means of excitation-dependent photoluminescence(PL) analysis. Quantum structures were grown on [0001]-oriented sapphire substrates (C plane) and single-crystalline [11̄00]-oriented freestanding GaN (M plane) using the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition technique. Strong PL spectrum line blueshifts (up to 140 meV) which are correlated with the excitation intensity have been obtained for C-plane MQWs, whereas no shift has been observed for M-plane MQWs.Theoretical calculations and comparison with the PL data confirm that the built-in electric field for C-plane structures is much stronger than the field present for M-plane MQWs. …

A Circumpolar Perspective On Fluvial Sediment Flux To The Arctic Ocean, Robert M. Holmes, James W. Mcclelland, Bruce J. Peterson
Faculty Publications
Quantification of sediment fluxes from rivers is fundamental to understanding land‐ocean linkages in the Arctic. Numerous publications have focused on this subject over the past century, yet assessments of temporal trends are scarce and consensus on contemporary fluxes is lacking. Published estimates vary widely, but often provide little accessory information needed to interpret the differences. We present a pan‐arctic synthesis of sediment flux from 19 arctic rivers, primarily focusing on contributions from the eight largest ones. For this synthesis, historical records and recent unpublished data were compiled from Russian, Canadian, and United States sources. Evaluation of these data revealed no …
A Quantum Rosetta Stone For Interferometry, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Jonathan P. Dowling
A Quantum Rosetta Stone For Interferometry, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Jonathan P. Dowling
Faculty Publications
Heisenberg-limited measurement protocols can be used to gain an increase in measurement precision over classical protocols. Such measurements can be implemented using, for example, optical Mach-Zehnder interferometers and Ramsey spectroscopes. We address the formal equivalence between the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the Ramsey spectroscope and a generic quantum logic circuit. Based on this equivalence we introduce the 'quantum Rosetta stone', and we describe a projective-measurement scheme for generating the desired correlations between the interferometric input states in order to achieve Heisenberg-limited sensitivity. The Rosetta stone then tells us that the same method should work in atom spectroscopy.
Seasonality Of Dissolved Rare Earth Elements In The Lower Mississippi River, Alan M. Shiller
Seasonality Of Dissolved Rare Earth Elements In The Lower Mississippi River, Alan M. Shiller
Faculty Publications
[1] Dissolved rare earth element (REE) concentrations were determined in a 27-month time series of the lower Mississippi River. Overall, the results agree with limited previous investigations; that is, the river shows enrichment of heavy REEs relative to light REEs and also has a significant Ce anomaly. However, the previous investigations relied on only single samples from the river. This seasonal investigation reveals significant temporal variations in the river's REE chemistry. In particular, large ( approximately fivefold) variations in light REE concentrations are observed. The light REEs follow a seasonality similar to particle-reactive trace elements. Also, the Ce anomaly shows …

Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars - Ii. The Epoch 2001 [Fe/H] Catalog, B. J. Taylor
Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars - Ii. The Epoch 2001 [Fe/H] Catalog, B. J. Taylor
Faculty Publications
This paper describes the derivation of an updated statistical catalog of metallicities. The stars for which those metallicities apply are of spectral types F, G, and K, and are on or near the main sequence. The input data for the catalog are values of [Fe/H] published before 2002 February and derived from lines of weak and moderate strength. The analyses used to derive the data have been based on one-dimensional LTE model atmospheres. Initial adjustments which are applied to the data include corrections to a uniform temperature scale which is given in a companion paper (see Taylor 2003). After correction, …

Statistical Cataloging Of Archival Data For Luminosity Class Iv-V Stars, B. J. Taylor
Faculty Publications
This paper is one of a pair in which temperatures and metallicity catalogs for class IV-V stars are considered. The temperature catalog described here is derived from a calibration based on stellar angular diameters. If published calibrations of this kind are compared by using color-index transformations, temperature-dependent differences among the calibrations are commonly found. However, such differences are minimized if attention is restricted to calibrations based on Johnson V-K. A calibration of this sort from Di Benedetto (1998) is therefore tested and adopted. That calibration is then applied to spectroscopic and photometric data, with the latter predominating. Cousins R-I photometry …

Large‐Scale Hydro‐Climatology Of The Terrestrial Arctic Drainage System, Mark C. Serreze, David H. Bromwich, Martyn P. Clark, Andrew J. Etringer, Tingjun Zhang, Richard B. Lammers
Faculty Publications
The large‐scale hydro‐climatology of the terrestrial Arctic drainage system is examined, focusing on the period 1960 onward. Special attention is paid to the Ob, Yenisey, Lena, and Mackenzie watersheds, which provide the bulk of freshwater discharge to the Arctic Ocean. Station data are used to compile monthly gridded time series of gauge‐corrected precipitation (P). Gridded time series of precipitation minus evapotranspiration (P−ET) are calculated from the moisture flux convergence using NCEP reanalysis data. Estimates of ET are obtained as a residual. Runoff (R) is obtained from available discharge records. For long‐term water‐year means, P−ET for the Yenisey, Lena, and Mackenzie …
Canonical Quantization Of Constrained Theories On Discrete Spacetime Lattices, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Canonical Quantization Of Constrained Theories On Discrete Spacetime Lattices, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We discuss the canonical quantization of systems formulated on discrete spacetimes. We start by analysing the quantization of simple mechanical systems with discrete time. The quantization becomes challenging when the systems have anholonomic constraints. We propose a new canonical formulation and quantization for such systems in terms of discrete canonical transformations. This allows us to construct, for the first time, a canonical formulation for general constrained mechanical systems with discrete time. We extend the analysis to gauge field theories on the lattice. We consider a complete canonical formulation, starting from a discrete action, for lattice Yang-Mills theory discretized in space …

Inclusive jet differential cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic e +p scattering for boson virtualities Q 2 > 125 GeV 2. The data were taken using the ZEUS detector at HERA and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb -1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the longitudinally invariant k T cluster algorithm. Measurements of differential inclusive jet cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse energy (E BT.jet), jet pseudorapidity and Q 2, for jets with E BT.jet > 8 GeV. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations agree well with the measurements both at high Q …

Nitrogen Loading Into An Urban Estuary: Lake Pontchartrain (Louisiana, U.S.A.), R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Dubravko Justic, Erick M. Swenson
Faculty Publications
We constructed a nitrogen loading budget for the Lake Pontchartrain watershed located north of New Orleans, Louisiana (U.S.A.). Water quality measurements, discharge estimates, and literature values were used to establish the annual and seasonal variations in loading rates for total nitrogen and nitrate. The relatively stable annual loadings (million kg N) are about 10× that of the pre-settlement nitrogen loading, and come from atmosphere (1.3), the watershed (7.8), pumped urban runoff from New Orleans (1.0), and leakage through the Bonnet Carré flood control structure (0.5–0.9). Relatively minor additional amounts come from nitrogen fixation in the Lake. Occasional openings of the …

Mapping The Mesoscale Interface Structure In Polycrystalline Materials, Brent L. Adams, C. L. Bauer, D. Casasent, A. Morawiec, S. Ozdemir, A. Talukder, Chialin T. Wu
Faculty Publications
This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC Program of the National Science Foundation under Award Numbers DMR-9632556 and DMR-0079996. A new experimental approach to the quantitative characterization of polycrystalline microstructure by scanning electron microscopy is described. Combining automated electron backscattering diffraction with conventional scanning contrast imaging and with calibrated serial sectioning, the new method (Mesoscale Interface Mapping System, MIMS) recovers precision estimates of the 3-dimensional idealized aggregate function G(x). This function embodies a description of lattice phase and orientation (limiting resolution ~ 1 degree) at each point x (limiting spatial resolution ~ 100 nanometers), and therefore contains a complete …

Filarial infections have been associated with the development of a strongly polarized Th2 host immune response and a severe impairment of mitogen-driven proliferation and type 1 cytokine production in mice and humans. The role of this polarization in the development of the broad spectra of clinical manifestations of lymphatic filariasis is still unknown. Recently, data gathered from humans as well as from immunocompromised mouse models suggest that filariasis elicits a complex host immune response involving both Th1 and Th2 components. However, responses of a similar nature have not been reported in immunologically intact permissive models of Brugia infection. Brucella abortus-killed …

Book Review: Law And Religion: Current Legal Issues 2001 - Volume 4, S. I. Strong
Faculty Publications
As volume four of Current Legal Issues demonstrates, commentary on the interplay between law and religion in the UK is growing, although the subject still attracts nowhere near the level of attention it does in other countries. The newest addition to the literature constitutes a welcome advance to lawyers working or interested in the field. For example, many existing collections of essays on law and religion focus primarily on sociological issues. This compilation, on the other hand, contains many essays that stress truly legal dilemmas, although sociological, philosophical and other approaches to the question are still well represented among the …

Strong Founder Effect In Drosophila Pseudoobscura Colonizing New Zealand From North America, J. Reiland, S. Hodge, Mohamed A.F. Noor
Faculty Publications
The North American native species Drosophila pseudoobscura was first identified in New Zealand in the last few decades. Here, we have studied the genetic consequences of its spread across the Pacific Ocean. Using 10 microsatellites that are highly variable in North American populations, we found that the New Zealand population has substantially fewer alleles, a much lower average heterozygosity, and significantly different allele frequencies at these loci. We have discussed the relative sensitivity of these parameters for detecting the founding event. X-linked loci were more strongly differentiated between continents than autosomal loci, as reflected by larger changes in allele frequencies …

We propose and analyze here a class of evolution equations of the form (ut + ux, + upux + Lut)x + euyy = 0, (* *) which provides an alternative to Eq. (*) in the same way the regularized long-wave equation is related to the classical Korteweg-de …

Activity Patterns And Correlates Among Youth: Differences By Weight Status, Wendell C. Taylor, James F. Sallis, Marsha Dowda, Patty S. Freedson, Karen Eason, Russell R. Pate
Faculty Publications
The purposes of the study were to assess differences in physical activity levels and correlates of physical activity among overweight (‡ 85th percentile of body mass index for their sex and age) and non-overweight (< 85th percentile) youth. The sample included 509 seventh through twelfth graders. Activity was measured by a 7-day, 46-item activity checklist. Overweight girls were more sedentary than non-overweight girls (p<.03), and non-overweight girls engaged in more vigorous physical activity than overweight girls (p<.03). For boys, there were no significant differences in activity. The regression analyses for vigorous activity yielded the largest total R2's (R2=.049 for overweight and R2=.27 for non-overweight.) The significant factor for overweight youth was greater athletic coordination (p<.01). For non-overweight youth, the significant factors were greater family support (p<.05), greater peer support (p<.001), fewer barriers (p<.03), and greater athletic coordination (p<.01). Correlates of physical activity vary by weight status of young people.

A Theoretical Framework For The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo, Timothy Singer
Faculty Publications
The multicast address allocation problem requires Internet domains to allocate unique addresses to multicast applications from a globally-shared space. We develop a theoretical framework for multicast allocation algorithms that is influenced by subcube allocation in hypercube computer systems. Based on this framework we derive complexity results for the address allocation problem and describe several new allocation algorithms that use a hypercube model for address representation.

The general plan of rehabilitation doctrine provides that expenses incurred as part of a plan of general rehabilitation must be capitalized even though the same expenses incurred separately would be deductible as ordinary and necessary repairs. The emerging general standard after INDOPCO for current deduction of an expenditure with future benefits, the case with most repair/ improvement expenditures, is a balancing test: Whether the taxpayer ’s administrative and record keeping costs associated with capitalization outweigh the potential distortion of income from a current deduction of the future benefit expenditures. “Rough justice” rules for current deduction of future benefits expenditures, reflecting …
