Time-domain and multimessenger astronomy (TDAMM) involves the study of transient and time-variable phenomena across various wavelengths and messengers. The Astro2020 Decadal Survey has identified TDAMM as the top priority for NASA in this decade, emphasizing its crucial role in advancing our understanding of the universe and driving new discoveries in astrophysics. The TDAMM community has come together to provide further guidance to funding agencies, aiming to define a clear path toward optimizing scientific returns in this research domain. This encompasses not only astronomy but also fundamental physics, offering insights into properties of gravity, the formation of heavy elements, the equation …

Suppose a residually finite group G acts cocompactly on a contractible complex with strict fundamental domain Q, where the stabilizers are either trivial or have normal \BbbZ-subgroups. Let @Q be the subcomplex of Q with nontrivial stabilizers. Our main result is a computation of the homology torsion growth of a chain of finite index normal subgroups of G. We show that independent of the chain, the normalized torsion limits to the torsion of @Q shifted a degree. Under milder assumptions of acyclicity of nontrivial stabilizers, we show similar formulas for the mod p-homology growth. We also obtain formulas for the …

Solving atomic nuclei from first principles places enormous demands on computational resources, which grow exponentially with increasing number of particles and the size of the space they occupy. We present first quantum simulations based on the variational quantum eigensolver for the low-lying structure of the 12C nucleus that provide acceptable bound-state energies even in the presence of noise. We achieve this by taking advantage of two critical developments. First, we utilize an almost perfect symmetry of atomic nuclei that, in a complete symmetry-adapted basis, drastically reduces the size of the model space. Second, we use the efficacious Gray encoding, …

The concept of resonant perfect absorption, enabled by the combined action of pulse propagation and an auxiliary gate pulse, was recently proposed and demonstrated in a group of two-level systems [Y. He, Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 273201 (2022)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.273201]. Here we exploit this method in a more realistic scenario by solving the coupled time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the Maxwell wave equation in helium. Through emptying the population of the 1s2p excited state after its excitation, we explore the evolution of the spectral profile with time delay and propagation distance and link the observations to the controlled interference between the original field …

We combine the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM) with the single-particle Green's function approach to construct optical potentials rooted in first principles. Specifically, we show that total cross sections and phase shifts for neutron elastic scattering from a He4 target with projectile energies between 0.5 and 10 MeV closely reproduce the experiment. In addition, we discuss an important new development that resolves a long-standing issue with spurious center-of-mass motion in the Green's function formalism for many-body approaches. The new development opens a path for first-principle predictions of cross sections for elastic scattering of single-nucleon projectiles, nucleon capture, and …

The Beta-decay Paul Trap is an open-geometry, linear trap used to measure the decays of 8Li and 8B to search for a tensor contribution to the weak interaction. In the latest 8Li measurement of Burkey et al. (2022), β scattering was the dominant experimental systematic uncertainty. The Beta-decay Paul Trap Mk IV reduces the prevalence of β scattering by a factor of 4 through a redesigned electrode geometry and the use of glassy carbon and graphite as electrode materials. The trap has been constructed and successfully commissioned with 8Li in a new data campaign that collected …

A Multi-Shell Extension Of The Interacting Boson Model, Feng Pan, Yu Zhang, Lianrong Dai, Jerry P. Draayer, David Kekejian

A multi-shell extension of the simplest formulation of the interacting boson model that appends parity-conserving (2ħω) energy excitations to the non-extended theory is proffered. From a physical perspective this extension links the system's low-lying configurations to higher-lying multiple one-particle-one-hole (1p-1h) excitation modes that are in part tethered to the system's isoscalar giant monopole and quadrupole resonances. An application of the theory to low-lying energy levels and known B(E0) and B(E2) values of 152Sm shows that the results obtained with the extension are better than those without the extension.

We have, at last, an observatory dedicated to X-ray polarimetry that has been operational since December 9th, 2021. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA SMEX mission, in partnership with ASI, based on three X-ray telescopes, each equipped with a polarization-sensitive detector in the focus. An extending boom was deployed in orbit, positioning the detectors at the optimal distance from the optics, which have a 4-meter focal length. The spacecraft is three-axis stabilized, providing power, attitude determination and control, transmission, and commanding capabilities. After two and a half years of observation, IXPE has detected positive polarization …

How astrophysical systems translate the kinetic energy of bulk motion into the acceleration of particles to very high energies is a pressing question. SS 433 is a microquasar that emits TeV γ-rays indicating the presence of high-energy particles. A region of hard X-ray emission in the eastern lobe of SS 433 was recently identified as an acceleration site. We observed this region with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and measured a polarization degree in the range 38%-77%. The high polarization degree indicates the magnetic field has a well-ordered component if the X-rays are due to synchrotron emission. The polarization angle …

Poeciliids (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae), commonly known as livebearers, are popular fishes in the aquarium trade (e.g., guppies, mollies, swordtails) that are widely distributed in the Americas, with 274 valid species in 27 genera. This group has undergone various taxonomic changes recently, spurred by investigations using traditional genetic markers. Here we used over 1,000 ultraconserved loci to infer the relationships within Poeciliidae in the first attempt at understanding their diversification based on genome-scale data. We explore gene tree discordance and investigate potential incongruence between concatenation and coalescent inference methods. Our aim is to examine the influence of incomplete lineage sorting and reticulate …

A single species of seahorse, Hippocampus kuda, has been reported from the Arabian/Persian Gulf. Anatomical and DNA analyses of specimens from Kuwait indicate a second species occurs in the northern Gulf, and based on available specimens, may be the most prevalent species in the region. Evidence indicates the species to be H. trimaculatus and represents a range extension from India’s Gulf of Kutch of 2,600 km. DNA analysis of additional specimens is encouraged, particularly of H. trimaculatus specimens from outside the Gulf.

A Nonlinear Least-Squares Convexity Enforcing C0 Interior Penalty Method For The Monge–Ampère Equation On Strictly Convex Smooth Planar Domains, Susanne C. Brenner, Li Yeng Sung, Zhiyu Tan, Hongchao Zhang
Faculty Publications
We construct a nonlinear least-squares finite element method for computing the smooth convex solutions of the Dirichlet boundary value problem of the Monge-Ampère equation on strictly convex smooth domains in R2. It is based on an isoparametric C0 finite element space with exotic degrees of freedom that can enforce the convexity of the approximate solutions. A priori and a posteriori error estimates together with corroborating numerical results are presented.

We determine when certain natural classes of subgroups of right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) and right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs) are themselves RAAGs. We characterize finite-index visual RAAG subgroups of 2–dimensional RACGs. As an application, we show that any 2–dimensional, one-ended RACG with planar defining graph is quasi-isometric to a RAAG if and only if it is commensurable to a RAAG. Additionally, we give new examples of RACGs with nonplanar defining graphs which are commensurable to RAAGs. Finally, we give a new proof of a result of Dyer: every subgroup generated by conjugates of RAAG generators is itself a RAAG.

Diapause exhibited by embryos of Artemia franciscana is accompanied by severe arrest of respiration. A large fraction of this depression is attributable to downregulation of trehalose catabolism that ultimately restricts fuel to mitochondria. This study now extends knowledge on the mechanism by revealing metabolic depression is heightened by inhibitions within mitochondria. Compared with that in embryo lysates during post-diapause, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) capacity P is depressed during diapause when either NADH-linked substrates (pyruvate and malate) for electron transfer (electron transfer capacity, E) through respiratory Complex I or the Complex II substrate succinate are used. When pyruvate, malate and succinate were …

Core protein components of the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling network, pyrabactin resistance (PYR), protein phosphatases 2C (PP2C), and SNF1-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) are involved in the regulation of stomatal closure and gene expression downstream responses in Arabidopsis thaliana. Phosphatidic acid (PA) produced by the phospholipases Dα1 and Dδ (PLDs) in the plasma membrane has been identified as a necessary molecule in ABA-inducible stomatal closure. On the other hand, the involvement of PA in ABA-inducible gene expression has been suggested but remains a question. In this study, the involvement of PA in the ABA-inducible gene expression was examined in the …

The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is a keystone species native to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts of the United States and Canada. It provides habitat for other marine organisms and makes up the majority of oyster production in the United States. Despite its tolerance to hypoxic conditions, C. virginica is threatened by anthropogenic climate change, which is increasing both average temperature and the frequency and severity of hypoxic events. In this study, we explore the differences in hypoxia-transcriptional response between two populations of eastern oysters with known differences in hypoxia tolerance at three time points over the course …

The Mn4CaO5 oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in Photosystem II (PSII) is assembled in situ and catalyzes water oxidation. After OEC assembly, the PsbO extrinsic subunit docks to the lumenal face of PSII and both stabilizes the OEC and facilitates efficient proton transfer to the lumen. D1 residue R334 is part of a hydrogen bond network involved in proton release during catalysis and interacts directly with PsbO. D1-R334 has recently been observed in different conformations in apo- and holo-OEC PSII structures. We generated a D1-R334G point mutant in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 to better understand this residue's function. D1-R334G PSII is active …

Key message: Schemes that use genomic prediction outperform others, updating testers increases hybrid genetic gain, and larger population sizes tend to have higher genetic gain and less depletion of genetic variance Abstract: One of the most common methods to improve hybrid performance is reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS). Genomic prediction (GP) can be used to increase genetic gain in RRS by reducing cycle length, but it is also possible to use GP to predict single-cross hybrid performance. The impact of the latter method on genetic gain has yet to be previously reported. Therefore, we compared via stochastic simulations various phenotypic and …

Introduction: Because Genomic selection (GS) is a predictive methodology, it needs to guarantee high-prediction accuracies for practical implementations. However, since many factors affect the prediction performance of this methodology, its practical implementation still needs to be improved in many breeding programs. For this reason, many strategies have been explored to improve the prediction performance of this methodology. Methods: When environmental covariates are incorporated as inputs in the genomic prediction models, this information only sometimes helps increase prediction performance. For this reason, this investigation explores the use of feature engineering on the environmental covariates to enhance the prediction performance of genomic …

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a major role in mitigating greenhouse gas emission and regulating earth’s climate, carbon cycle, and biodiversity. Wetland soils account for one-third of all SOM; however, globally, coastal wetland soils are eroding faster due to increasing sea-level rise. Our understanding of carbon sequestration dynamics in wetlands lags behind that of upland soils. Here, we employ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) to investigate the molecular-level structure of biopolymers in wetland soils spanning 11 centuries. High-resolution multidimensional spectra, enabled by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), demonstrate enduring preservation of molecular structures within herbaceous plant cores, notably condensing aromatic motifs …

Glyme-based lithium-ion electrolytes have received considerable attention from the scientific community due to their improved safety, as well as electrochemical and thermal stability over carbonate-based electrolytes. However, these electrolytes suffer from major drawbacks such as high viscosities. To overcome the challenges that hinder their full potential, the molecular description of glyme-based lithium electrolytes in the high-concentration regime, particularly in the solvate ionic liquid (SIL) and high-concentration electrolyte (HCE) regimes, is needed. In this study, model glyme-based electrolytes based on a lithium thiocyanate and either tetraglyme (G4) or a mixture of monoglyme (G1) and diglyme (G2) were investigated as a function …

We report the biochemical, structural, and functional characterization of the protein coded by gene PA4880 in the P. aeruginosa PAO1 genome. The PA4880 gene had been annotated as coding a probable bacterioferritin. Our structural work shows that the product of gene PA4880 is a protein that adopts the Dps subunit fold, which oligomerizes into a 12-mer quaternary structure. Unlike Dps, however, the ferroxidase di-iron centers and iron coordinating ligands are buried within each subunit, in a manner identical to that observed in the ferroxidase center of P. aeruginosa bacterioferritin. Since these structural characteristics correspond to Dps-like proteins, we term the …
