Should Dodgeball Ever Die?, David C. Barney, Keven A. Prusak May 2019

Should Dodgeball Ever Die?, David C. Barney, Keven A. Prusak

Faculty Publications

When discussing the game of dodgeball, it is usually with fond memories and excitement for the thrill that came from the game. Then there is those that strongly disliked it for reasons that it was embarrassing, hurtful and just not fun. The game of dodgeball has been experienced by many students in their physical education (PE) classes, for better and for worse. The purpose of this study was to better understand the perceptions, experiences and opinions of recently-former K-12 students toward dodgeball in PE. The results of the study found that generally males enjoyed the game and felt it is …

Statistical Viability Analysis Of United States Air Force Estimating Cost Factor For Sustainable Construction, Philip A. Ramsey, Diedrich Prigge, Torrey J. Wagner, Alfred E. Thal Jr. May 2019

Statistical Viability Analysis Of United States Air Force Estimating Cost Factor For Sustainable Construction, Philip A. Ramsey, Diedrich Prigge, Torrey J. Wagner, Alfred E. Thal Jr.

Faculty Publications

Varying legislation and executive orders coupled with needs for energy resiliency have led the United States Air Force (USAF) to pursue sustainable construction. However, the limited understanding of initial costs to implement these changes have contributed to poor project cost estimating, resulting in 62 percent of USAF projects experiencing more than 5 percent cost growth. After reviewing 1628 USAF Military Construction (MILCON) construction projects in 922 category codes (CATCODEs), a twotailed t-test for populations with unequal variance was accomplished on the final normalized contract cost for 340 projects in 16 CATCODEs executed between 2002 and 2017. This analysis provides a …

This work is dedicated to the study of a technique for hadron identification in the TeV momentum range, based on the simultaneous measurement of the energies and of the emission angles of the Transition Radiation (TR) X-rays with respect to the radiating particles. A detector setup has been built and tested with particles in a wide range of Lorentz factors (from about 10 3 to about 4×10 4 crossing different types of radiators. The measured double-differential (in energy and angle) spectra of the TR photons are in a reasonably good agreement with TR simulation predictions.

© 2019 American Chemical Society. An expedient synthesis of tetrahydroindoles and tetrahydrocyclopenta[b]pyrroles, highlighted by Brønsted acid catalyzed formal [2 + 2 + 1] annulation reaction, is reported. Using three readily accessible reaction components, i.e., an electrophilic species in silyloxyallyl cations and two distinct nucleophiles in silylenol ethers and amines, our chemistry enables the assembly and functionalization of these biologically important N-heterocycles in a highly modular manner.

New bulk sediment Sr and Nd isotope data, coupled with U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains from sediment cored by the International Ocean Discovery Program in the Arabian Sea, allow the reconstruction of erosion in the Indus catchment since ∼ 17 Ma. Increasing ϵNd values from 17 to 9.5 Ma imply relatively more erosion from the Karakoram and Kohistan, likely linked to slip on the Karakoram Fault and compression in the southern and eastern Karakoram. After a period of relative stability from 9.5 to 5.7 Ma, there is a long-term decrease in ϵNd values that corresponds with …

Introduction: Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤35%, as current significant implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) indication for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in heart failure (HF) patients, has been widely recognised to be inefficient. Improvement of patient selection for low LVEF (≤35%) is needed to optimise deployment of ICD. Most of the existing prediction models are not appropriate to identify ICD candidates at high risk of SCD in HF patients with low LVEF. Compared with traditional statistical analysis, machine learning (ML) can employ computer algorithms to identify patterns in large datasets, analyse rules automatically and build both linear and …

Transition metal-doped semiconductor materials are extensively employed for light harvesting and photocatalytic applications owing to their increased light absorption and charge mobility. In this work, spatial tailoring of the Ni dopant in TiO2 nanostructures is performed by varying the secondary processing parameters to engineer the resulting optoelectronic properties for select applications. Specifically, the aging of the dried Ti sol and the resulting Ni segregation are observed to be moisture-driven phenomena based on the infrared and time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopy measurements. While X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy-loss spectroscopy characterizations show a clear difference in the crystal …

We present the results of a search for long-duration gravitational-wave transients in the data from the Advanced LIGO second observation run; we search for gravitational-wave transients of 2-500 s duration in the 24-2048 Hz frequency band with minimal assumptions about signal properties such as waveform morphologies, polarization, sky location or time of occurrence. Signal families covered by these search algorithms include fallback accretion onto neutron stars, broadband chirps from innermost stable circular orbit waves around rotating black holes, eccentric inspiral-merger-ringdown compact binary coalescence waveforms, and other models. The second observation run totals about 118.3 days of coincident data between November …

The physics of neutron stars can be studied with gravitational waves emitted from coalescing binary systems. Tidal effects become significant during the last few orbits and can be visible in the gravitational wave spectrum above 500 Hz. After the merger, the neutron star remnant oscillates at frequencies above 1 kHz and can collapse into a black hole. Gravitational wave detectors with a sensitivity of ≃10-24 strain/Hz at 2-4 kHz can observe these oscillations from a source which is approximately 100 Mpc away. The current observatories, such as LIGO and Virgo, are limited by shot noise at high frequencies and have …

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. Social plasticity, defined as the ability to adaptively change the expression of social behavior according to previous experience and to social context, is a key ecological performance trait that should be viewed as crucial for Darwinian fitness. The neural mechanisms for social plasticity are poorly understood, in part due to skewed reliance on rodent models. Fish model organisms are relevant in the field of social plasticity for at least two reasons: first, the diversity of social organization among fish species is staggering, increasing the breadth of evolutionary relevant questions that can be asked. Second, that diversity …

Auditory Distraction Does More Than Disrupt Rehearsal Processes In Children’S Serial Recall, Angela M. Aubuchon, Corey I. Mcgill, Emily M. Elliott May 2019

Auditory Distraction Does More Than Disrupt Rehearsal Processes In Children’S Serial Recall, Angela M. Aubuchon, Corey I. Mcgill, Emily M. Elliott

Faculty Publications

As children mature, their ability to remember information improves. This improvement has been linked to changes in verbal control processes such as rehearsal. Rehearsal processes are thought to undergo a quantitative shift around 7 years of age; however, direct measurement of rehearsal is difficult. We investigated a measure of rehearsal ability in children and compared this measurement to serial recall performance in the presence of auditory distractors. Theories of auditory distraction effects in children rely upon a combination of attentionally based and serial-order-based processes (Elliott et al. in Journal of Memory and Language, 88, 39–50, 2016); the present work contributes …

Most people spend the majority of their lives indoors. Research over the last thirty years has focused on investigating the mechanisms through which specific elements of the built environment, such as indoor air quality, influence the physical health of occupants. However, similar effort has not been expended in regard to mental health, a significant public health concern. One in five Americans has been diagnosed with a mental health disorder in the past year, and, in the United States, the number of suicide deaths are similar to the number of deaths due to breast cancer. Increases in mental health disorders in …

© 2019 Author(s). We present molecular-frame measurements of the recombination dipole matrix element (RDME) in CO2, N2O, and carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecules using high-harmonic spectroscopy. Both the amplitudes and phases of the RDMEs exhibit clear imprints of a two-center interference minimum, which moves in energy with the molecular alignment angle relative to the laser polarization. We find that whereas the angle dependence of this minimum is consistent with the molecular geometry in CO2 and N2O, it behaves very differently in OCS; in particular, the phase shift which accompanies the two-center minimum changes sign for different alignment angles. Our results suggest …

Layered transition-metal compounds have received great attention owing to their physical properties. Here, we present the structural, electronic, thermal, and magnetic properties of BaMn2Sb2 and Ba2Mn3Sb2O2 single crystals, both with the layered structure analogous to high-temperature Cu- A nd Fe-based superconductors. While the Mn moment in the MnSb4 tetrahedral environment forms a long-range G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in both BaMn2Sb2 (TN1≈443K) and Ba2Mn3Sb2O2 (TN1≈314K), a short-range AFM order is found in the intercalated MnO2 layer at a much lower temperature (TN2≈60K) coexisting with long-range G-type order in MnSb4 layer in Ba2Mn3Sb2O2. The directions of the ordered moments in these two …

Floodwater Impact On Galveston Bay Phytoplankton Taxonomy, Pigment Composition And Photo-Physiological State Following Hurricane Harvey From Field And Ocean Color (Sentinel-3a Olci) Observations, Eurico D'Sa

Faculty Publications

Phytoplankton taxonomy, pigment composition and photo-physiological state were studied in Galveston Bay (GB), Texas (USA), following the extreme flooding associated with Hurricane Harvey (25-29 August 2017) using field and satellite ocean color observations. The percentage of chlorophyll a (Chl a) in different phytoplankton groups was determined from a semi-analytical IOP (inherent optical property) inversion algorithm. The IOP inversion algorithm revealed the dominance of freshwater species (diatom, cyanobacteria and green algae) in the bay following the hurricane passage (29 September 2017) under low salinity conditions associated with the discharge of floodwaters into GB. Two months after the hurricane (29-30 October 2017), …

Deep Autoencoder Neural Networks For Short-Term Traffic Congestion Prediction Of Transportation Networks, Sen Zhang, Yong Yao, Jie Hu, Yong Zhao, Shaobo Li, Jianjun Hu May 2019

Deep Autoencoder Neural Networks For Short-Term Traffic Congestion Prediction Of Transportation Networks, Sen Zhang, Yong Yao, Jie Hu, Yong Zhao, Shaobo Li, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

Traffic congestion prediction is critical for implementing intelligent transportation systems for improving the efficiency and capacity of transportation networks. However, despite its importance, traffic congestion prediction is severely less investigated compared to traffic flow prediction, which is partially due to the severe lack of large-scale high-quality traffic congestion data and advanced algorithms. This paper proposes an accessible and general workflow to acquire large-scale traffic congestion data and to create traffic congestion datasets based on image analysis. With this workflow we create a dataset named Seattle Area Traffic Congestion Status (SATCS) based on traffic congestion map snapshots from a publicly available …

Effects Of The Relationships Between Forms Within And Across Paradigms On Lexical Processing And Representation: An Experimental Investigation Of Russian Nouns, Jeffery R. Parker

Faculty Publications

The frequency and distribution of forms within a lexeme’s paradigm affect how quickly forms are accessed (e.g., Kostić, 1991; Milin, Filipović Đurđević, & Moscoso del Prado Martín, 2009; Moscoso del Prado Martı́n, Kostić, & Baayen, 2004). The distribution of forms across paradigms, in contrast, has received little experimental attention. Theoretical studies investigate the distribution of forms across paradigms because forms vary in how predictive they are of other (unknown) forms. Such investigations have uncovered typological tendencies (e.g., Ackerman & Malouf, 2013; Stump & Finkel, 2013) and contribute to explanations of language-specific phenomena (e.g., Sims, 2015; Parker & Sims, To appear). …

With A Little Help From My Friends (And Their Friends): Influence Neighborhoods For Social Recommendations, Avni Gulati, Magdalini Eirinaki

Faculty Publications

Social recommendations have been a very intriguing domain for researchers in the past decade. The main premise is that the social network of a user can be leveraged to enhance the rating-based recommendation process. This has been achieved in various ways, and under different assumptions about the network characteristics, structure, and availability of other information (such as trust, content, etc.) In this work, we create neighborhoods of influence leveraging only the social graph structure. These are in turn introduced in the recommendation process both as a pre-processing step and as a social regularization factor of the matrix factorization algorithm. Our …

An Introduction To Hpxmp – A Modern Openmp Implementation Leveraging Hpx, An Asynchronous Many-Task System, Tianyi Zhang, R. Tohid, Shahrzad Shirzad, Weile Wei, Patrick Diehl, Hartmut Kaiser

Faculty Publications

Asynchronous Many-task (AMT) runtime systems have gained increasing acceptance in the HPC community due to the performance improvements offered by fine-grained tasking runtime systems. At the same time, C++ standardization efforts are focused on creating higher-level interfaces able to replace OpenMP or OpenACC in modern C++ codes. These higher level functions have been adopted in standards conforming runtime systems such as HPX, giving users the ability to simply utilize fork-join parallelism in their own codes. Despite innovations in runtime systems and standardization efforts users face enormous challenges porting legacy applications. Not only must users port their own codes, but often …

Morphological And Physiological Characteristics Of Endornavirus-Infected And Endornavirus-Free Near-Isogenic Lines Of Bell Pepper (Capsicum Annuum), C. Escalante, R. A. Valverde

Faculty Publications

Plant endornaviruses are persistent viruses that infect plants without causing symptoms. Although endornaviruses have been reported in many economically important plant species, little is known about the effect they have on their hosts. Bell pepper endornavirus (BPEV) has been reported in cultivated peppers (Capsicum spp.). In commercial cultivars of bell pepper (C. annuum) grown in the United States, this virus is found at prevalence rates of 100%. Two bell pepper near-isogenic lines (NILs), one BPEV-infected and the other BPEV-free, were generated and used to investigate the type of symbiotic relationship between BPEV and bell pepper. Selected morphological and physiological characteristics …

Gray Radiation Hydrodynamics With The Flash Code For Astrophysical Applications, E. Chatzopoulos, K. Weide

Faculty Publications

We present the newly incorporated gray radiation hydrodynamics capabilities of the FLASH code based on a radiation flux-limiter-aware hydrodynamics numerical implementation designed specifically for applications in astrophysical problems. The implemented numerical methods consist of changes in the unsplit hydrodynamics solver and adjustments in the flux-limited radiation diffusion unit. Our approach can handle problems in both the strong and weak radiation-matter coupling limits, as well as transitions between the two regimes. Appropriate extensions in the "Helmholtz" equation of state are implemented to treat two-temperature astrophysical plasmas involving the interaction between radiation and matter and the addition of a new opacity unit …

Using Wind And Hydro Power To Sustain The Off-Grid Power Supply For A 50' Cruising Sailboat, Keisha Meyer, Torrey J. Wagner, Jada Williams May 2019

Using Wind And Hydro Power To Sustain The Off-Grid Power Supply For A 50' Cruising Sailboat, Keisha Meyer, Torrey J. Wagner, Jada Williams

Faculty Publications

Cruising sailboats operate with a power requirement modest enough to operate mostly or completely on renewable energy technology sources. Cruisers without renewable energy systems use the vessel’s diesel engine to charge the boat’s batteries; if the systems are operated at anchor, this dramatically decreases the time before the engine needs major overhaul. System users estimate a diesel engine can run approximately 8,000 hours underway before needing major overhaul, whereas operating 500 hours at anchor produces similar wear and tear on engine pistons. © 2019 American Chemical Society. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are a new class of designer solvents with a wide range of possible applications. DESs are typically made from an ionic compound and a hydrogen bond donor, but lately DESs made of nonionic compounds with interesting properties have started to appear. This study focuses on describing the structure, dynamics, and interactions of a nonionic DES composed of N-methylacetamide (NMA) and lauric acid (LA). Linear IR and time-resolved IR experiments show that LA-NMA DES is the result of hydrogen bond interaction between the two molecular components, though the interaction energy is only …
