© 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Background: Viral bronchiolitis is a common respiratory infection that often affects term, otherwise healthy infants. A small literature suggests maternal stress during pregnancy is associated with bronchiolitis. However, the association between maternal exposure to lifetime traumatic stress, including traumatic events occurring in childhood or throughout the life course, and bronchiolitis has not been studied previously. Objectives: To investigate the association between maternal exposure to total lifetime and childhood traumatic stress events and infant bronchiolitis. Methods: We studied mother-infant dyads enrolled in a prospective prenatal cohort, recruited 2006-2011, and Tennessee Medicaid. During pregnancy, we …

Entropy Bound For The Classical Capacity Of A Quantum Channel Assisted By Classical Feedback, Dawei Ding, Yihui Quek, Peter W. Shor, Mark M. Wilde Jul 2019

Entropy Bound For The Classical Capacity Of A Quantum Channel Assisted By Classical Feedback, Dawei Ding, Yihui Quek, Peter W. Shor, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

We prove that the classical capacity of an arbitrary quantum channel assisted by a free classical feedback channel is bounded from above by the maximum average output entropy of the quantum channel. As a consequence of this bound, we conclude that a classical feedback channel does not improve the classical capacity of a quantum erasure channel, and by taking into account energy constraints, we conclude the same for a pure-loss bosonic channel. The method for establishing the aforementioned entropy bound involves identifying an information measure having two key properties: 1) it does not increase under a one-way local operations and …

Photometry Of K2 Campaign 9 Bulge Data, R. Poleski, M. Penny, B. S. Gaudi, A. Udalski, C. Ranc, G. Barentsen, A. Gould

Faculty Publications

In its Campaign 9, K2 observed dense regions toward the Galactic bulge in order to constrain the microlensing parallaxes and probe for free-floating planets. Photometric reduction of the K2 bulge data poses a significant challenge due to a combination of the very high stellar density, large pixels of the Kepler camera, and the pointing drift of the spacecraft. Here we present a new method to extract K2 photometry in dense stellar regions. We extended the Causal Pixel Model developed for less-crowded fields, first by using the pixel response function together with accurate astrometric grids, second by combining signals from a …

Faculty Publications

Adaptations in hepatic and skeletal muscle substrate metabolism following acute and chronic (6 wk; 5 days/wk; 1 h/day) low-intensity treadmill exercise were tested in healthy male C57BL/6J mice. Low-intensity exercise maximizes lipid utilization; therefore, we hypothesized pathways involved in lipid metabolism would be most robustly affected. Acute exercise nearly depleted liver glycogen immediately postexercise (0 h), whereas hepatic triglyceride (TAG) stores increased in the early stages after exercise (0-3 h). Also, hepatic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1 alpha) gene expression and fat oxidation (mitochondrial and peroxisomal) increased immediately postexercise (0 h), whereas carbohydrate and amino acid oxidation in liver …

It has long been appreciated that analyses of genomic data (e.g., whole genome sequencing or sequence capture) have the potential to reveal the tree of life, but it remains challenging to move from sequence data to a clear understanding of evolutionary history, in part due to the computational challenges of phylogenetic estimation using genome-scale data. Supertree methods solve that challenge because they facilitate a divide-and-conquer approach for large-scale phylogeny inference by integrating smaller subtrees in a computationally efficient manner. Here, we combined information from sequence capture and whole-genome phylogenies using supertree methods. However, the available phylogenomic trees had limited overlap …

We present a highly scalable demonstration of a portable asynchronous many-task programming model and runtime system applied to a grid-based adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamic simulation of a double white dwarf merger with 14 levels of refinement that spans 17 orders of magnitude in astrophysical densities. The code uses the portable C++ parallel programming model that is embodied in the HPX library and being incorporated into the ISO C++ standard. The model represents a significant shift from existing bulk synchronous parallel programming models under consideration for exascale systems. Through the use of the Futurization technique, seemingly sequential code is transformed into …

We report on a search for high-energy counterparts to fast radio bursts (FRBs) with the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, Fermi Large Area Telescope, and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope. We find no significant associations for any of the 23 FRBs in our sample, but report upper limits to the high-energy fluence for each on timescales of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 s. We report lower limits on the ratio of the radio to high-energy fluence, f r/fγ, for timescales of 0.1 and 100 s. We discuss the implications of our non-detections on various proposed progenitor models for …

The recent discovery by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo of a gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star inspiral has enabled tests of general relativity (GR) with this new type of source. This source, for the first time, permits tests of strong-field dynamics of compact binaries in the presence of matter. In this Letter, we place constraints on the dipole radiation and possible deviations from GR in the post-Newtonian coefficients that govern the inspiral regime. Bounds on modified dispersion of gravitational waves are obtained; in combination with information from the observed electromagnetic counterpart we can also constrain effects due …

We present a search for gravitational waves from 222 pulsars with rotation frequencies 10 Hz. We use advanced LIGO data from its first and second observing runs spanning 2015-2017, which provides the highest-sensitivity gravitational-wave data so far obtained. In this search we target emission from both the l = m = 2 mass quadrupole mode, with a frequency at twice that of the pulsar's rotation, and the l = 2, m = 1 mode, with a frequency at the pulsar rotation frequency. The search finds no evidence for gravitational-wave emission from any pulsar at either frequency. For the l = …

© 2019 Author(s). We demonstrate high-harmonic spectroscopy in many-electron molecules using time-dependent density-functional theory. We show that a weak attosecond-pulse-train ionization seed that is properly synchronized with the strong driving mid-infrared laser field can produce experimentally relevant high-harmonic generation (HHG) signals, from which we extract both the spectral amplitude and the target-specific phase (group delay). We also show that further processing of the HHG signal can be used to achieve molecular-frame resolution, i.e., to resolve the contributions from rescattering on different sides of an oriented molecule. In this framework, we investigate transient two-center interference in CO2 and OCS, and how …

Numerical Convergence Of Finite Difference Approximations For State Based Peridynamic Fracture Models, Prashant K. Jha, Robert Lipton Jul 2019

Numerical Convergence Of Finite Difference Approximations For State Based Peridynamic Fracture Models, Prashant K. Jha, Robert Lipton

Faculty Publications

In this work, we study the finite difference approximation for a class of nonlocal fracture models. The nonlocal model is initially elastic but beyond a critical strain the material softens with increasing strain. This model is formulated as a state-based peridynamic model using two potentials: one associated with hydrostatic strain and the other associated with tensile strain. We show that the dynamic evolution is well-posed in the space of Hölder continuous functions C 0,γ with Hölder exponent γ∈(0,1]. Here the length scale of nonlocality is ϵ, the size of time step is Δt and the mesh size is h. The …

Coorbits For Projective Representations With An Application To Bergman Spaces, Jens Gerlach Christensen, Amer H. Darweesh, Gestur Ólafsson

Faculty Publications

Representation theory of locally compact topological groups is a powerful tool to analyze Banach spaces of functions and distributions. It provides a unified framework for constructing function spaces and to study several generalizations of the wavelet transform. Recently representation theory has been used to provide atomic decompositions for a large collection of classical Banach spaces. But in some natural situations, including Bergman spaces on bounded domains, representations are too restrictive. The proper tools are projective representations. In this paper we extend known techniques from representation theory to also include projective representations. This leads naturally to twisted convolution on groups avoiding …

Output Feedback Stabilization By Reduced Order Finite Time Observers Using A Trajectory Based Approach, Michael Malisoff, Frederic Mazenc, Saeed Ahmed Jul 2019

Output Feedback Stabilization By Reduced Order Finite Time Observers Using A Trajectory Based Approach, Michael Malisoff, Frederic Mazenc, Saeed Ahmed

Faculty Publications

We use finite time reduced order continuous-discrete observers to solve an output feedback stabilization problem for a class of nonlinear time-varying systems whose outputs contain uncertainty. Unlike earlier works, our feedback is discontinuous, but it does not contain distributed control terms. Our trajectory based approach is based on a contrac-tivity condition. We illustrate our control in the context of a tracking problem for nonholonomic systems in chained form.

On Average Values Of Time-Varying Delays And A New Representation Of Systems With Time-Varying Delays, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We show by a counterexample that the asymptotic stability of a system with a pointwise periodic time-varying delay cannot be deduced from the average value of the delay. We use this counterexample to motivate our new representation of systems with time-varying delays, which we use to develop a new state feedback stabilization method.

Sequential Predictors Under Time-Varying Feedback And Measurement Delays And Sampling, Jerome Weston, Michael Malisoff Jul 2019

Sequential Predictors Under Time-Varying Feedback And Measurement Delays And Sampling, Jerome Weston, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We build sequential predictors for time-varying linear systems with time-varying input delays, outputs, sampling in the control, and time-varying measurement delays. We prove global exponential stability and robustness properties. We allow the sup norm of the input delay to be arbitrarily large and aperiodic sampling. We use a new set of dynamical extensions that contain output measurements, and whose advantages over existing methods include their lack of distributed terms.

Characterizing Diameter Distributions For Uneven-Aged Pine-Oak Mixed Forests In The Qinling Mountains Of China, Shuaichao Sun, Quang V. Cao, Tianjian Cao

Faculty Publications

Pine-oak mixed forests in the Qinling Mountains are an essential part of the ecosystem in Northwestern China. Diameter distribution models for four species groups of pine-oak mixed forests were developed using the Weibull function. Both moment and hybrid estimation approaches were used to predict theWeibull parameters. For each approach, three fitting methods (maximum likelihood estimator regression (MLER), cumulative distribution function regression (CDFR) and modified CDFR) were employed to obtain estimates for coefficients of regression equations to predict Weibull parameters. Overall results indicated that the Moment Estimation approach was better than the Hybrid approach, and that the CDFR method was superior …

Resetting The Table For People And Plants: Botanic Gardens And Research Organizations Collaborate To Address Food And Agricultural Plant Blindness, Sarada Krishnan, Tara Moreau, Jeff Kuehny, Ari Novy, Stephanie L. Greene, Colin K. Khoury

Faculty Publications

Societal Impact Statement: Food and agricultural plants are integral to human well-being. Due to their universal importance, such plants would appear to represent an ideal entryway by which to address plant blindness. However, with limited opportunities for direct contact with agriculture, many people cannot appreciate the flora that feed us every day. We provide examples of informal education initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness and appreciation of food and agricultural plants, made possible through collaborations between botanic gardens, academic institutions, nonprofits, and agricultural research organizations. We hope these examples encourage and inspire organizations to further utilize food and agricultural plants …

Role Of Fe2o3 In Fly Ash Surrogate On Pcdd/Fs Formation From 2-Monochlorophenol, Xia Guan, Ajit Ghimire, Phillip M. Potter, Slawomir M. Lomnicki

Faculty Publications

The correlation between the content and morphology of Fe2O3 and the yields of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) was studied in this work. Three fly ash surrogates containing 1%, 2.5%, and 4% of Fe2O3 were prepared and their effects on PCDD/Fs formation were investigated and compared to our previously studied 5% iron oxide sample using 2-monochlorophenol precursor model. As the intermediate of PCDD/Fs, environmentally persistent free radical formation propensity was correlated with the PCDD/Fs formation yields for different iron oxide samples. PCDD/Fs yield increases exponentially with the increasing iron content under pyrolytic conditions. On the contrary, low iron oxide …

In this study, a strain of SAR11 subgroup IIIa (termed HIMB114) was grown in seawater-based batch and continuous culture in order to quantify cellular features and metabolism relevant to SAR11 ecology. We report some of the first direct measurements of cellular elemental quotas for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) for SAR11, grown in batch culture: 1.4 0.9 fg N and 0.44 0.01 fg P, respectively, that were consistent with the small size of HIMB114 cells (average volume of 0.09 m3). However, the mean carbon (C) cellular quota of 50 47 fg C was anomalously high, but variable. The …

Despite important biotic stresses to common bean, Anthracnose (ANT) and Angular Leaf Spot (ALS) can cause losses of up to 80 % and occur in more than 60 countries around the world. Genetic resistance is the most sustainable strategy to manage these diseases. Thus, we aimed to (1) identify new SNP markers associated with ALS and ANT resistance loci in elite common bean lines, and (2) provide a functional characterization of the DNA sequences containing the identified SNP markers. We evaluated 60 inbred lines, under field conditions, which represent the elite germplasm developed by the Embrapa common bean breeding program …

Anthropometric measurements have been used to assess an individual's body composition, disease risk, and nutritional status. Three-dimensional (3D) optical devices can rapidly acquire body surface scans in the form of a triangular mesh which can then be used to obtain anthropometric measurements such as body volume, limb lengths, and circumferences; however, the meshes provided by some scanners may include missing data patches known as holes. These need to be repaired in order to obtain correct landmark detection and automatic calculation of anthropometric measurements -especially body volume. In this study, we present ScReAM (Scan Reconstruction for Anthropometric Measurements) which is a …

Engaging In Culturally Relevant Teaching: Lessons From The Field, Charity Hannah Garcia, Charissa Boyd

Faculty Publications

Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) is a popular topic for discussion and research, and it continues to gain more traction through practical application in classrooms worldwide. Certainly, as many teachers look around their classrooms, they recognize that demographics are changing, and student populations are becoming increasingly more diverse. It is more likely than ever that teachers will not look like or have the same cultural or linguistic background as many of their students. This means that some students will be entering classrooms with valuable learning strategies developed within their home communities, but these strategies may be very different from what their …
