Computation Of High-Order Sensitivities Of Model Responses To Model Parameters—Ii: Introducing The Second-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology For Computing Response Sensitivities To Functions/Features Of Parameters, Dan Gabriel Cacuci
Faculty Publications
This work introduces a new methodology, which generalizes the extant second-order adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology for computing sensitivities of model responses to primary model parameters. This new methodology enables the computation, with unparalleled efficiency, of second-order sensitivities of responses to functions of uncertain model parameters, including uncertain boundaries and internal interfaces, for linear and/or nonlinear models. Such functions of primary model parameters customarily describe characteristic “features” of the system under consideration, including correlations modeling material properties, flow regimes, etc. The number of such “feature” functions is considerably smaller than the total number of primary model parameters. By enabling the computations …

We investigate the implementation of principal component (PC) transport to accelerate the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent combustion flows. The acceleration is achieved using the transport of PCs and the tabulation of the closure terms in the PC-transport equations using machine learning. Further acceleration is achieved by a treatment for bottlenecks associated with the acoustic time steps for low Mach number flows. The approach is implemented in 2D and 3D on a laboratory scale lean premixed methane-air flame stabilized on a slot burner. DNS based on the transport of thermochemical scalars (species and energy) is also carried out, first …

Investigation Of Welding Repair Methods For Thermoplastic Composite Joints, Wencai Li, Genevieve Palardy
Faculty Publications
Repair is a common process to extend the service life of composite structures, and there is a need for techniques compatible with thermoplastic composites (TPCs). As the assembly of TPC joints through welding is gaining importance, evaluating their potential for repairability is essential. This work aims to develop novel techniques to repair welded TPC joints: 1) Successive repair (three cycles) of broken joints by ultrasonic-assisted method with neat and nanocomposite films, and 2) one-step repair using ultrasonic welding (USW) and resistance heating. It was found from tensile testing that multi-walled carbon nanotube/polypropylene (MWCNT/PP) films partially restored the lap shear strength …

Strain sensors play a pivotal role in quantifying stress and strain across diverse domains, encompassing engineering, industry, and medicine. Their applicability has recently extended into the realm of wearable electronics, enabling real-time monitoring of body movements. However, conventional strain sensors, while extensively employed, grapple with limitations such as diminished sensitivity, suboptimal tensile strength, and susceptibility to environmental factors. In contrast, polymer-based composite strain sensors have gained prominence for their capability to surmount these challenges. The integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcing agents within the polymer matrix ushers in a transformative era, bolstering mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and thermal stability. …

Over the last decade, industry and academia have worked towards raising students’ interests in cybersecurity through game-like competitions to fill a shortfall of cybersecurity professionals. Rising interest in video games in combination with gamification techniques make learning fun, easy, and addictive. It is crucial that cybersecurity curricula enhance and expose cybersecurity education to a diversified student body to meet workforce demands. Gamification through cybercompetitions is one method to achieve that. With a vast list of options for competition type, focus areas, learning outcomes, and participant experience levels we need to systematize knowledge of attributes that ameliorate cybercompetitions. In the wake …

In November 2020, Apple introduced a new architecture, Apple Silicon, that would power all new laptops and desktops. Based on ARM64 and with many custom features added by Apple, this marked a complete switch from the Intel-based systems that have powered Apple laptops and desktops for many years. With such a radical change, it was obvious that many existing digital forensics and incident response techniques would need to be re-evaluated on the platform. Similarly, several new additions to the operating system are interesting as potential abuse vectors for malware and malicious actors. In this paper, we document our effort to …

As the transition to electric mobility accelerates, charging infrastructure is rapidly expanding. Publicly accessible chargers, also known as electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), are critical not only for further promoting the transition but also for mitigating charger access anxiety among electric vehicle (EV) users. It is essential to install the proper EVSE configuration that meets the EV user's various considerations. This study presents a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework for determining the best performing public EVSE type from multiple EV user perspectives. The proposed approach combines a new MCDM model with an optimal public charging station model. While the optimal model …

Blood stream infections (BSIs) are challenging to rapidly and precisely diagnose. Current clinical diagnostic methods for BSI identification require culturing the blood sample for many hours prior to identifying the bacteria and possible antibiotic resistance. Removing the culturing step from the bacterial identification process of a BSI provides a significant reduction in the processing time, but shifts the rate-limiting step from the growth time to the concentration procedure, since CFU levels in clinical blood samples can be as low as 10 CFU/mL in blood. This study developed a novel whole blood filtration method to concentrate bacteria from a BSI without …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor, and its treatment is further complicated by the high selectivity of the blood–brain barrier (BBB). The scientific community is urgently seeking innovative and effective therapeutic solutions. Liposomes are a promising new tool that has shown potential in addressing the limitations of chemotherapy, such as poor bioavailability and toxicity to healthy cells. However, passive targeting strategies based solely on the physicochemical properties of liposomes have proven ineffective due to a lack of tissue specificity. Accordingly, the upregulation of transferrin receptors (TfRs) in brain tissue has led to the development of TfR-targeted anticancer therapeutics. …
Recommended Separation Distances For 1.3 Ammunition And Explosives, Clint Guymon, Ming Liu, Josephine Covino
Recommended Separation Distances For 1.3 Ammunition And Explosives, Clint Guymon, Ming Liu, Josephine Covino
Faculty Publications
Separation Distances are used throughout the world to protect people and assets from the potential hazardous effects from propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics. The current separation distances for Hazard Division (HD) 1.3 substances and articles used in the United States, in some cases, may not adequately protect against the effects from heat flux and debris when those substances and articles are ignited in a confined structure. Multiple tests in such a confined scenario with HD 1.3 substances have shown that the heat flux and debris hazards could result in injury at distances beyond the current specified explosives safety separation distance (ESSD). …

Sensor networks collect data that is often contaminated by noise. Therefore, it is often necessary to analyze sensor data to determine if a signal is present. This research project utilizes a machine learning algorithm that is able to detect a signal in the presence of noise. The algorithm incorporates the long short-term memory (LSTM) method to determine the presence or absence of a signal in the midst of white Gaussian noise. This machine learning approach was tested with computer generated data and has an accuracy of at least 98% for signal-to-noise levels greater than -12 dB. Furthermore, this algorithm can …

Nanoparticles with high absorption cross sections will advance therapeutic and bioimaging nanomedicine technologies. While Au nanoshells have shown great promise in nanomedicine, state-of-the-art synthesis methods result in scattering-dominant particles, mitigating their efficacy in absorption-based techniques that leverage the photothermal effect, such as photoacoustic (PA) imaging. We introduce a highly reproducible synthesis route to monodisperse sub-100 nm Au nanoshells with an absorption-dominant optical response. Au nanoshells with 48 nm SiO2 cores and 7 nm Au shells show a 14-fold increase in their volumetric absorption coefficient compared to commercial Au nanoshells with dimensions commonly used in nanomedicine. PA imaging with Au nanoshell …

While solution micellization of ionic block copolymers (BCP) with randomly distributed ionization sites along the hydrophilic segments has been extensively studied, the roles of positionally controlled ionization sites along the BCP chains in their micellization and resulting micellar structure remain comparatively less understood. Herein, three amphoteric polypeptoid block copolymers carrying two oppositely charged ionizable sites, with one fixed at the hydrophobic terminus and the other varyingly positioned along the hydrophilic segment, have been synthesized by sequential ring-opening polymerization method. The presence of the ionizable site at the hydrophobic segment terminus is expected to promote polymer association toward equilibrium micellar structures …

Conducting research experiments on plutonium electrorefining is difficult due to the significant hazards and regulations associated with nuclear materials. Finding a surrogate for plutonium electrorefining studies would enable more fundamental research to be conducted. Potential surrogates were first identified by determining the physical properties required to conduct electrorefining at the same conditions commonly used in plutonium electrorefining, a molten metal and molten CaCl2 at 1123 K. Ce-CeCl3, In-InCl3, and Pb-PbCl2 were the only potential surrogates identified using these constraints. Sn-SnCl2 was also tested at these same conditions. More potential surrogates were identified by …

Computational Investigations Of The Water Structure At The Α-Al2o3(0001)-Water Interface, Xiaoliu Zhang, Christopher G. Arges, Revati Kumar
Faculty Publications
The α-Al2O3(0001)-water interface is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The spectral signatures of the vibrational sum frequency generation (vSFG) spectra of OH stretching mode for water molecules at the interface are related to the interfacial water orientation, hydrogen bond network, and water dissociation process at different water/alumina interfaces. Significant differences are found between alumina surfaces at different hydroxylation levels, namely, Al-terminated and O-terminated α-Al2O3(0001). By calculating the vibrational sum frequency generation spectrum and its imaginary component from AIMD results, the structure of interfacial waters as well as the termination of alumina slab are related to the spectral …

The propagation of a high energy laser through a nearly stagnant absorbing medium is studied. The absorption values and time scale of the problem are such that the laser induces convective heat currents transverse to the beam. These currents couple to the laser via the refractive index, causing time dependent thermal blooming. A numerical method is developed and applied to the model in [ J. Electromagn. Waves Appl. 33, 96 (2019) ], using radial basis functions for spatial differencing, which allows for irregular point spacings and a wide class of geometries. Both the beam and laser-induced fluid dynamics are …

The accumulated entropy at the crack tip of a semi-circular bending (SCB) specimen is investigated to obtain a threshold for material fracture and interatomic debonding. The presented approach uses the experimental data obtained from the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique and strain maps superposed to SCB specimens to measure the plastic flow at the crack tip. The Swift strain hardening model is utilized to calculate the stress domain at the crack tip and, consequently, the plastic strain energy and entropy accumulation. Results show that the crack surface propagates when the generated entropy at the crack tip reaches a critical limit. …

The use of loss on ignition (LOI) measurements of soil organic matter (SOM) to estimate soil organic carbon (OC) content is a decades-old practice. While there are limitations and uncertainties to this approach, it continues to be necessary for many coastal wetlands researchers and conservation practitioners without access to an elemental analyzer. Multiple measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) standards recognize the need (and uncertainty) for using this method. However, no framework exists to explain the substantial differences among equations that relate SOM to OC; consequently, equation selection can be a haphazard process leading to widely divergent and inaccurate estimates. Globally, decentralized energy systems are gaining popularity due to their potential for energy accessibility, energy resilience, and sustainability benefits. Existing research on an energy system decentralization approach, community choice aggregation (CCA), shows its ability to lower energy costs and increase renewable electricity consumption for U.S. communities. Nevertheless, research on the relationship between CCA and distributed electricity generation development is lacking. This paper fills this gap by investigating if the CCA approach associates with distributed generation capacity interconnection in California municipalities. The finding shows that although the average capacity has increased for all municipalities throughout the study period, contrary to proponents’ …

We report the discovery of GRB 221009A, the highest flux gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM). This GRB has continuous prompt emission lasting more than 600 s, which smoothly transitions to afterglow emission visible in the Fermi-GBM energy range (8 keV-40 MeV), and total energetics higher than any other burst in the Fermi-GBM sample. By using a variety of new and existing analysis techniques we probe the spectral and temporal evolution of GRB 221009A. We find no emission prior to the Fermi-GBM trigger time (t 0; 2022 October 9 at 13:16:59.99 UTC), indicating that …

Intergovernmental science organizations (IGSOs) address many challenges of the 21st century. Several countries of the Global South have joined established IGSOs or have created new ones. Yet we know little about their interests in IGSOs. Our study addresses this blind spot by investigating which objectives Southern actors pursue in IGSOs and under which conditions they are likely to achieve their objectives. Using insights from three strands of literature, we compare four IGSOs with Southern participation: the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, the Square Kilometer Array, and the African Lightsource. We show that countries of the …

Deregulated protein kinases are crucial in promoting cancer cell proliferation and driving malignant cell signaling. Although these kinases are essential targets for cancer therapy due to their involvement in cell development and proliferation, only a small part of the human kinome has been targeted by drugs. A comprehensive scoring system is needed to evaluate and prioritize clinically relevant kinases. We recently developed CancerOmicsNet, an artificial intelligence model employing graph-based algorithms to predict the cancer cell response to treatment with kinase inhibitors. The performance of this approach has been evaluated in large-scale benchmarking calculations, followed by the experimental validation of selected …

Wave- and current-supported turbidity currents (WCSTCs) are one of the sediment delivery mechanisms from the inner shelf to the shelf break. Therefore, they play a significant role in the global cycles of geo-chemically important particulate matter. Recent observations suggest that WCSTCs can transform into self-driven turbidity currents close to the continental margin. However, little is known regarding the critical conditions that grow self-driven turbidity currents out of WCSTCs. This is in part due to the knowledge gaps in the dynamics of WCSTCs regarding the role of density stratification. Especially the effect of sediment entrainment on the amount of sediment suspension …
