The WESS Newsletter recently asked Eva Kronik, European Studies Librarian, Cornell University Libraries, Ithaca, New York, and Richard D. Hacken, European Foreign Lnaguage and Area Studies Bibliographer, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah a number of questions about their positions, their work, their education, and their institutions and clientele. Letters flew between California, Utah, and New York State, and what follows is a slightly abridged and edited transcription of these exchanges. Copyright American Library Association, 1983.

Association Between Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors And Physical Fitness In Healthy Adult Women, Larry W. Gibbons, Steven N. Blair, Kenneth H. Cooper, Mike Smith May 1983

Association Between Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors And Physical Fitness In Healthy Adult Women, Larry W. Gibbons, Steven N. Blair, Kenneth H. Cooper, Mike Smith

Faculty Publications

We examined associations between physical fitness and risk factors for coronary heart disease in healthy women ages 18-65 years. Physical fitness was objectively determined by the duration of a maximal treadmill exercise test. Six physical fitness categories (very poor to superior), specific within 10-year age increments, were established. Mean risk factor levels varied across categories, but so did potential confounders such as age and weight. Multiple linear regression modeling was used to control for the effects of age, weight and year of exam on coronary risk factors. After adjustment, physical fitness was independently associated with triglycerides (p < 0.001), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (p less …

Does Weight Loss Cause The Exercise-Induced Increase In Plasma High Density Lipoproteins?, Paul T. Williams, Peter D. Wood, Ronald M. Krauss, William L. Haskell, Karen M. Vranizan, Steven N. Blair, Richard Terry, John W. Farquhar May 1983

Does Weight Loss Cause The Exercise-Induced Increase In Plasma High Density Lipoproteins?, Paul T. Williams, Peter D. Wood, Ronald M. Krauss, William L. Haskell, Karen M. Vranizan, Steven N. Blair, Richard Terry, John W. Farquhar

Studies showing an increase in plasma concentration of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) with moderate exercise have usually rejected the role of body weight change in the HDL-C raising process, ostensibly because the amount of weight lost has been negligible. To investigate HDL-C changes more thoroughly, we followed initially sedentary middle-aged men randomly assigned to either a moderate running (N=36) or a sedentary control (N=28) group for one year. Among runners, one-year changes in plasma HDL-C concentrations correlated strongly with their body weight changes (r = -0.53, P < 0.001). Curve-fitting procedures and regression analysis suggested that processes associated with weight change produce much of the plasma HDL-C changes induced by moderate exercise and that changes in HDL-C concentration predominantly reflect changes in the reputedly anti-atherogenic HDL2 sub-component. Further, the interaction between weight change and plasma HDL-C concentration was significantly different (P

Interpreting This Constitution: The Unhelpful Contributions Of Special Theories Of Judicial Review, William W. Van Alstyne

Faculty Publications

This paper examines several different theories surrounding judicial review and finds many of these theories lacking. Modern trends of literal interpretations and precise language have removed the optimistic nature of Constitutional language and is largely responsible for the hesitancy of other nations to adopt a supreme constitution.

Library Use Patterns Among Full- And Part-Time Faculty And Students, Jo Bell Whitlatch Jan 1983

Library Use Patterns Among Full- And Part-Time Faculty And Students, Jo Bell Whitlatch

Faculty Publications

Trends in higher education are toward part-time students and majors in professional fields which are associated with low library use. Research findings at San Jose State University, California and other academic libraries, demonstrate that declining library use may be a future trend. Declining use will further erode administrative support for library budgets. Libraries must become effective in identifying and meeting the information needs of new nontraditional students. User surveys establishing service priorities can be an effective tool in planning library service for future student and faculty populations.

From the outset, the reader should be familiar with our script. Our threefold purpose in writing this essay is to be at once descriptive, evaluative, and prescriptive. We shall describe briefly the decisions of the United States Supreme Court during the 1981 Term in the broad field of federal jurisdiction, and shall compare and contrast those decisions with the past decisions of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Mississippi's Severance Tax And Forest Resource Development Program, G. H. Weaver, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1983

Mississippi's Severance Tax And Forest Resource Development Program, G. H. Weaver, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Mississippi's Forest Resource Development Pro- gram was the second state-sponsored forestry assistance pro- gram in the United States. It was authorized by the legislature tn 1974 in response to concerns over long-term availability of softwood timber. It is funded by a severance tax levied at the potnt of first processing. Since inception, 152,295 acres have been treated under the program. Severance tax rates were established in 1974 and remained constant until 1981. Costs rose rapidly during these years, and the only way to increase funds for the program was to cut more timber or raise the fixed tax rates, as …

Ftc Rulemaking Through Negotiation, Charles H. Koch Jr., Beth Martin Jan 1983

Ftc Rulemaking Through Negotiation, Charles H. Koch Jr., Beth Martin

Faculty Publications

The Federal Trade Commission, along with other administrative agencies, has been especially affected by the current emphasis on deregulation. Some proponents of the free market system view the Commission as an unnecessary and costly impediment to market functioning. In this article, Professor Koch and Ms. Martin review past FTC regulatory efforts in light of the FTC's mandate: to maintain an efficient, competitive free market Although the FTC has deviated from its market maintenance goal, this deviation should not serve as a basis for constricting Commission rulemaking activity. Rather, the authors demonstrate that past Commission practices illustrate the need for an …

Aliabad Women: Revolution As Religious Activity, Mary E. Hegland Jan 1983

Aliabad Women: Revolution As Religious Activity, Mary E. Hegland

Faculty Publications

An apparent paradox of the Iranian Revolution has been the tremendous participation of Iranian women in the revolution, in terms of the numbers of women who were active in demonstrations, contrasted to the subsequent setbacks in the position of women in Iran and their decreasing participation in public life. In this chapter, I argue that the great majority of women participating in the revolution did not consider their actions to be outside of traditional social, cultural and religious parameters. Neither did they expect their participation in the revolution to be the first step in gaining improved status and more important …

Ancillary Relief In Federal Securities Law: A Study In Federal Remedies, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

After describing the history and current practice of ancillary relief in federal securities law, this Article analyzes the general law of federal remedies and ancillary relief, including ancillary relief in other areas of administrative law, recent developments in federal equity, statutory interpretation, and federal common law, and implied statutory remedies. The Article then examines pertinent aspects of the federal securities laws, including their legislative history and recent judicial interpretations. On this basis the Article recommends both a general approach to ancillary relief in federal securities law and responses to problems of specific remedies. Finally, the Article discusses ancillary relief under …

Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of a sequence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. Each day there were four 15‐minute sessions, with a 10‐minute intersession interval. Cumulative dose‐effect curves for phencyclidine, pentobarbital, and d‐amphetamine were obtained by giving an injection before each of the four sessions; successive injections increased the cumulative dose in equally spaced logarithmic steps. For comparison, non‐cumulative doses of each drug (i.e., doses not preceded …

Recent Developments In West German Civil Procedure, William B. Fisch Jan 1983

Recent Developments In West German Civil Procedure, William B. Fisch

Faculty Publications

The most comprehensive description of the West German civil litigation system to appear in United States law journals, a much-admired, practice-oriented work by two United States law professors and a Hamburg judge, was published twenty-five years ago. At that moment, a commission of experts, appointed in 1955 by the Federal Ministry of Justice and called the Commission to Prepare a Reform of Civil Justice, was already deep into a thorough reexamination of the entire West German system. The stimuli for this reexamination were the eternal devils of judicial procedure everywhere: technicality, inaccessibility, and above all, delay and cost. In 1961, …

Urinary Sodium Excretion And Blood Pressure In Children: Absence Of A Reproducible Association, Richard Cooper, Kiang Liu, Maurizio Trevisan, William Miller, Jeremiah Stamler Jan 1983

Urinary Sodium Excretion And Blood Pressure In Children: Absence Of A Reproducible Association, Richard Cooper, Kiang Liu, Maurizio Trevisan, William Miller, Jeremiah Stamler

Faculty Publications

A previous report by our group described a cross-sectional association between urinary sodium excretion and blood pressure (BP) in children. Attempts were made to reproduce these findings in two subsequent studies carried out with an identical protocol. Although descriptive results were similar and the correlations between measures of body size and blood pressure were reproduced, a clear-cut association between 7-day mean urinary sodium excretion and BP was observed only in the first of the three studies. These results could imply inadequate study methods, an inconsistent and weak relationship, or the absence of a relationship altogether. © 1983 American Heart Association, …

Is The Period Of Rapidly Declining Adult Mortality In The United States Coming To And End?, R. Cooper, R. Cohen, A. Amiry Jan 1983

Is The Period Of Rapidly Declining Adult Mortality In The United States Coming To And End?, R. Cooper, R. Cohen, A. Amiry

Faculty Publications

Age-standardized death rates from all causes for persons age 35-74 fell 23 per cent, 1968-1979. The monotonic decline was interrupted by only one period of excess influenza mortality. In the late 1970s, however, the decline in mortality decelerated and no further decrease was observed, 1979-1981. The recurrence of epidemic influenza contributed significantly to this trend although it would appear that the underlying mortality pattern has begun to change.
