A Note On After-Tax Analysis Where Capitalized Costs Are Depreciated, Steven H. Bullard, Thomas J. Straka Jan 1992

A Note On After-Tax Analysis Where Capitalized Costs Are Depreciated, Steven H. Bullard, Thomas J. Straka

Faculty Publications

Forest management often requires relatively long-term and capital intensive investments. Economic analysis of timber management alternatives can therefore be an extremely important aspect of decision-making. Investment analysis techniques are prominent in forest management texts and have also been the subject of many articles in the forestry literature.

Any forestry investment analysis involves several important aspects. Topics included in reports by Gunter and Haney (1984) and Bullard et al. (1986), for example, include the treatment of inflation, income taxes, risk, and the choice of an appropriate discount rate. In this article, we focus on a very specific aspect of after-tax investment …

Pine Tip Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Infestation Rates As Influenced By Site And Stand Characteristics In Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas, James R. Meeker, David Kulhavy Jan 1992

Pine Tip Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Infestation Rates As Influenced By Site And Stand Characteristics In Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas, James R. Meeker, David Kulhavy

Faculty Publications

Three young loblolly pine plantations grown on contrasting soil types produced quantitatively and qualitatively different host material for pine tip moths during 1985 and 1986. Amounts, periodicity, and availability of soil moisture regulated internal moisture conditions within host trees. Host xylem moisture potential in conjunction with soil nutrient status governed tree growth and influenced pine tip moth infestation rates.

Pines on a sandy site exhibited the poorest growth with lowest infestation rates, indicative of low-quality hosts with little if any tolerance to damage. A clayey site produced vigorous plant growth with moderate infestation rates. The less apparent hosts appeared capable …

Site Factors Affecting Growth Of Loblolly Pine In The Post Oak Belt, W. D. Hacker, M. Victor Bilan Jan 1992

Site Factors Affecting Growth Of Loblolly Pine In The Post Oak Belt, W. D. Hacker, M. Victor Bilan

Faculty Publications

A study was conducted in the Post Oak Belt of East Texas to determine which site factors affected height growth of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.). Height/age pairs were developed from stem analysis. Nonlinear regression was implemented to develop generalized height-age model. After curves were developed, stepwise regression was used to determine if an environmental variable impacted height growth. Environmental factors correlated with height growth included A horizon depth and those related to moisture relations including seasonal precipitation, average daily temperature, and texture of the A horizon. Relationship Between Anxiety, Self-Confidence, And Evaluation Of Coaching Behaviors, Laura J. Kenow, Jean M. Williams Jan 1992

Relationship Between Anxiety, Self-Confidence, And Evaluation Of Coaching Behaviors, Laura J. Kenow, Jean M. Williams

Faculty Publications

Two experiments examined Smoll and Smith's (1989) model of leadership behaviors in sport. The coaching behaviors of a male head coach of a collegiate women's basketball team (n=11 players) were examined. The data supported competitive trait anxiety as an individual-difference variable that mediates athletes' perception and evaluation of coaching behaviors. There also was support for adding athletes' state cognitive anxiety, state self-confidence and perception of the coach's cognitive anxiety to the model as individual-difference variables. Athletes who scored high in trait anxiety (p<.001) and state cognitive anxiety (p<.05) and low in state self-confidence (p<.05), and athletes who perceived the coach as high in state cognitive anxiety (p<.001), evaluated coaching behavior more negatively. Game outcome may influence the effect of self-confidence in mediating athletes' perception and evaluation of coaching behaviors. Additionally, athletes perceived several specific coaching behaviors more negatively than did the coach, and athletes drastically overestimated their coach's self-reported pregame cognitive and somatic anxiety and underestimated his self-confidence. Overall, the results suggest that coaches should be more supportive and less negative with high anxious and low self-confident athletes.

Glottal Airflow And Electroglottographic Measures Of Vocal Function At Multiple Intensities, Christopher Dromey, Elaine T. Stathopouloss, Christine M. Sapienza Jan 1992

Glottal Airflow And Electroglottographic Measures Of Vocal Function At Multiple Intensities, Christopher Dromey, Elaine T. Stathopouloss, Christine M. Sapienza

Faculty Publications

Summary: Ten normal female subjects produced syllables at 5 dB increments from soft to loud. The differentiated electroglottogram (dEGG) open and speed quotients were compared to similar quotients from the inverse-filtered airflow waveform. The latter were measured according to objective and subjective criteria. The data indicate that the open quotient from the airflow waveform decreased as the intensity increased. The dEGG open quotient did not demonstrate this trend. The speed quotient from airflow increased initially with vocal intensity and decreased again as the intensity ceiling was approached. The ratio of closing to opening slopes calculated from peaks in the dEGG …

Turning Online Time Into Quality Time: Searching Ohio Case Law On Lexis And Westlaw, Randy J. Diamond Jan 1992

Turning Online Time Into Quality Time: Searching Ohio Case Law On Lexis And Westlaw, Randy J. Diamond

Faculty Publications

This article discusses some of the lesser known complexities of LEXIS and WESTLAW and the necessity for evaluating these systems critically. Sample searches highlight the major differences between WESTLAW's and LEXIS's search protocols. Comparable features of each system are examined to show how users can improve the quality of their search results and to warn of unintended consequences when users misapply them. Strategies for formulating searches that retrieve relevant cases and prevent the exclusion of potentially relevant cases are considered, along with the economics of online searching. Although the searches presented are limited to Ohio case law, they are adaptable …

Wife Abuse And The Political System: A Middle Eastern Case Study, Mary E. Hegland

Faculty Publications

Although wife abuse is common in Iran, it is a subject which has received almost no attention from scholars and little has been written on it. The purpose of this article is to examine the problem, to show the connection between wife-beating and the Iranian political system, and to raise questions for further research. The data on which this analysis is based come from my own research as well as from published sources. The two case histories of wife abuse presented exemplify social process in a political system characterized by arbitrariness and the need to dominate. The degree to which …

Causal Comparisons, Robert N. Strassfeld Jan 1992

Causal Comparisons, Robert N. Strassfeld

Faculty Publications

Focusing on the multiple meanings of the statement "A was a more important cause of C than was B," Professor Strassfeld considers the feasibility of comparative causation as a means of apportioning legal responsibility for harms He concludes that by combining two different interpretations of "more important cause"--judgments of comparative counterfactual similarity and the Uniform Comparative Fault Act approach of comparative responsibility-we can effectively make causal comparisons and avoid the effort to compare such incommensurables as the defendant's fault under a strict liability standard and the plain- tiff's fault for failure to exercise reasonable care

Rethinking Attorney Conflict Of Interest Doctrine, Kevin C. Mcmunigal Jan 1992

Rethinking Attorney Conflict Of Interest Doctrine, Kevin C. Mcmunigal

Faculty Publications

This article focuses on conflict of interest doctrine dealing with concur- rent conflict of interest issues. Its thesis is that a primary source of confusion in conflict of interest doctrine is its failure to clearly articulate and answer the central questions which lie at the heart of the subject. In essence it argues that to remedy this confusion we need to rethink attorney conflict of interest doctrine so that it focuses more clearly on articulating and answering these central questions.

If . . .: Counterfactuals In The Law, Robert N. Strassfeld Jan 1992

If . . .: Counterfactuals In The Law, Robert N. Strassfeld

Faculty Publications

This Article considers some of the uses of counterfactuals in the law. Counterfactuals are a type of conditional statement. Conditional statements express the idea that something is or will be the case (the consequent), provided that some other situation is realized (the antecedent). Conditionals often take the form "if p then q", Counterfactuals are conditionals in which the author expresses the knowledge or belief that the antecedent is false.

Intrusion And The Investigative Reporter, Lyrissa Lidsky Jan 1992

Intrusion And The Investigative Reporter, Lyrissa Lidsky

Faculty Publications

Although sometimes reviled as muckrakers, investigative reporters play a valuable role in exposing societal ills and advancing reform. The success of investigative journalism is due, at least in part, to its use of novel newsgathering techniques. Yet some of these same techniques pose a threat to individual privacy. Current tort doctrine strikes an unsatisfactory balance between these competing interests. The qualified common-law privilege advocated by this Note, in contrast, would protect those newsgathering activities that promote the public welfare. Equally significantly, by sending a clear message to editors, media lawyers, and reporters about the scope of protected newsgathering activity, it …

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen Jan 1992

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen

Faculty Publications

Methane oxidation in soil cores from a mixed hardwood-coniferous forest varied relatively little as a function of incubation temperatures from -1 to 30°C. The increase in oxidation rate was proportional to T2.4 (in kelvins). This relationship was consistent with limitation of methane transport through a soil gas phase to a subsurface zone of consumption by diffusion. The Q10 for CO2 production, 3.4, was substantially higher than that for methane oxidation, 1.1, and indicated that the response of soil respiration to temperature was limited by enzymatic processes and not diffusion of either organic substrates or molecular oxygen. When grown under conditions …

The Hemagglutinin/Esterase Gene Of Human Coronavirus Strain Oc43: Phylogenetic Relationships To Bovine And Murine Coronaviruses And Influenza C Virus, Xuming Zhang, Konstantin G. Kousoulas, Johannes Storz Jan 1992

The Hemagglutinin/Esterase Gene Of Human Coronavirus Strain Oc43: Phylogenetic Relationships To Bovine And Murine Coronaviruses And Influenza C Virus, Xuming Zhang, Konstantin G. Kousoulas, Johannes Storz

Faculty Publications

The complete nucleotide sequences of the hemagglutinin/esterase (HE) genes of human coronavirus (HCV) strain OC43 and bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCV) strain G95 were determined from single-stranded cDNA fragments generated by reverse transcription of virus-specific mRNAs and amplified by polymerase chain reaction. An open reading frame of 1272 nucleotides was identified as the putative HE gene by homology to the bovine coronavirus HE gene. This open reading frame encodes a protein of 424 amino acids with an estimated molecular weight of 47.7 kDa. Ten potential N-linked glycosylation sites were predicted in the HE protein of HCV-OC43 while nine of them were …

Two-Step Polymerase Chain Reactions And Restriction Endonuclease Analyses Detect And Differentiate Ompa Dna Of Chlamydia Spp., B. Kaltenboeck, K. G. Kousoulas, J. Storz

Faculty Publications

Specific and sensitive amplification of major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene (ompA) DNA sequences of Chlamydia species with various MOMP genotypes was achieved by a two-step polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Degenerate, inosine-containing oligonucleotide primers homologous to the 5' and 3' ends of the translated regions of all chlamydial MOMP genes were used in a PCR to amplify a DNA fragment of approximately 1,120 bp. A portion of this DNA fragment was amplified in a second genus-specific reaction that yielded a DNA fragment of approximately 930 bp. A pair of degenerate oligonucleotide primers homologous to internal sequences of the primary DNA …
