Librarians: A Thinking And Learning Styles Portrait, David Squires, Helen K. Hoopes, Gary P. Gillum

Faculty Publications

Our research reflects the general tendencies and the challenges that develop when diverse thinking styles exist within any large organization, including libraries. After compiling and analyzing the various instruments used in this study, we concluded that the professional librarians in this sample tended to be verbally oriented and more satisfied with libraries than were the visual thinkers.

Nephite Uses And Interpretations Of Zenos, Noel B. Reynolds Jul 1992

Nephite Uses And Interpretations Of Zenos, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The allegory of the olive tree attributed to the ancient prophet Zenos and copied from the plates of brass into the small plates by Jacob was a source used by several Book of Mormon prophets. Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, and Alma seemed to be relying on the allegory at several points in the elaboration of their own visions, prophecies, and teachings. This paper provides a systematic documentation of this phenomenon, including passages that have not previously been linked to Zenos. It also demonstrates how the interpretations of the allegory by the earliest Nephite prophets advanced distinctive concepts and language that also …

The Distant Triumph Song: Music And The Book Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester Jul 1992

The Distant Triumph Song: Music And The Book Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

Music plays a larger role in the book of Revelation than in any other book of the New Testament, and few books in all of Scripture have spawned more hymns sung in Christian worship today. Attention to how the hymnic material in Revelation would have sounded to the Christians who first heard it, to the place of these hymns in Revelation as a whole, and to their relation to the rest of Scripture can help revitalize the singing of the hymns these passages have inspired.

A Descriptive Analysis And Academic Genealogy Of Major Contributors To Jtpe In The 1980s, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Information about whose knowledge is accepted as important is valuable in understanding how a profession evolves. The term elders describes the individuals who control invisible networks of prestige and who determine what information is accepted for publication in professional journals. These published works stand as the foundation for the knowledge base of a discipline. The purpose of this article was to identify the elders in physical education teacher education (PETE) and to trace their academic genealogy. Elders were defined as major contributors to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education from 1981 through 1989. The articles published by these subjects …

Liquidity Costs And Stock Price Response To Convertible Security Calls, Michael A. Mazzeo, William T. Moore Jul 1992

Liquidity Costs And Stock Price Response To Convertible Security Calls, Michael A. Mazzeo, William T. Moore

Faculty Publications

Firms' announcements to call in-the-money convertible securities for redemption essentially force their conversion into common stock, and such announcements are generally met with significant reductions in the calling firms' equity values. An explanation based on liquidity costs is advanced and tested. The explanation implies that investors who choose to sell their shares early in the conversion period bear liquidity costs by selling at reduced prices. Consistent with the explanation, the average share price decline is short-lived, lasting most of the conversion period. Thus, a component of the call announcement effect appears to be due to liquidity costs.

Ideology, Status, And The Differential Success Of Direct Parties Before The Supreme Court, Reginald S. Sheehan, William Mishler, Donald R. Songer Jun 1992

Ideology, Status, And The Differential Success Of Direct Parties Before The Supreme Court, Reginald S. Sheehan, William Mishler, Donald R. Songer

Faculty Publications

A substantial literature on lower federal courts and state courts suggests that the "haves" usually come out ahead in litigation because they possess superior resources for it and they reap advantages from their repeat player status. We investigate the success of 10 categories of litigants before the Warren, Burger, and Rehnquist Courts to determine whether the resources or experience of litigants has effects on Supreme Court outcomes paralleling those found in the courts below. While different categories of litigants are found to have very different rates of success, those differences do not consistently favor litigants with greater resources. A time …

An Attributional Analysis Of Resistance To Group Pressure Regarding Illicit Drug And Alcohol Consumption, Randall L. Rose, William O. Bearden, Jesse E. Teel

Faculty Publications

This article investigates the role of attributional thinking in generating resistance to pressures toward conformity in the illicit consumption of drugs and alcohol. The results of four studies regarding how conformity influences illicit drug and alcohol consumption among high school and college students are reported. In study 1 more than two-thirds of the respondents reported concern for the implications of their own dissent or compliance regarding the reactions of their peers. Study 2 demonstrated a significant relationship between high school students' attributional thinking concerning a peer group's illicit beer consumption and conformity, expressed as intentions to drink the beer. In …

Sound Symbolic Involvement, Janis B. Nuckolls Jun 1992

Sound Symbolic Involvement, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

This article examines an iconic form of communication, sound symbolism, which has been associated with oral cultures and implicated in paradigms of primitive mentality, I argue that Lowland Ecuadorean Quechua speakers use sound symbolic iconicity to create interlocutionary involvement. A speaker's performative foregrounding of a sound symbolic form simuhtes the salient qualities of an action, event, or process, and thereby invites a listener to project into an experience. This projected involvement, in turn, points the listener to deeper kinds of imaginative, intellectual, and emotional engagement with the narrative. The argument is based on an analysis of the formal and semantic …

Race And Ethnic Variation In The Schooling Consequences Of Female Adolescent Sexual Activity, Renata Forste, Marta Tienda Mar 1992

Race And Ethnic Variation In The Schooling Consequences Of Female Adolescent Sexual Activity, Renata Forste, Marta Tienda

Faculty Publications

Data from the National Survey of Families and Households are used to examine the influence of adolescent childbearing and marriage on the likelihood of high school completion among a cohort of women aged 20 to 29 in 1987. Use of event history techniques reveals striking differences by ethnicity. While the effect of teen marriage on school completion was significant only for whites, adolescent childbearing had much stronger deleterious effects for Latinas than for white or especially black teens. Attitudinal data are presented in an effort to explain these differences.

Rethinking Accountability, Melvin Dubnick Feb 1992

Rethinking Accountability, Melvin Dubnick

Faculty Publications

This presentation examines the author’s work focusing on "rethinking accountability" in public administration. It critiques dominant paradigms, such as rational choice and bureaucratic politics, for their superficial understanding of public sector behavior and provides an overview to the widely cited “accountability framework” developed with Romzek in their 1987 study of the Challenger accident. The framework is based on the idea that public administrators and other decision makers are constantly faced with multiple, diverse and (often) conflicting expectations, and that various forms of accountability develop as a response to such situations. Ultimately, the paper advocates for a deeper, more nuanced understanding …

Effect Of Co2 On The Processing Of Y-Ba-Cu-O Superconductors, C. Zhang, Guna S. Selvaduray Feb 1992

Effect Of Co2 On The Processing Of Y-Ba-Cu-O Superconductors, C. Zhang, Guna S. Selvaduray

Faculty Publications

The superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O6+x reacted with various known ratios of O2/CO2 gas mixtures during sintering at different temperatures were studied. Jc was found to decrease drastically upon reaction with CO2, becoming zero at certain CO2 activities. The stability region for the 123 superconductor, as a function of CO2 activity and temperature, was empirically formulated as follows: log pCO2 < (−45,000)/T + 33.4. The grain boundaries in sintered samples with Jc = 0 were investigated with HRTEM in conjunction with EDS. Two distinct types of grain boundaries were observed. Approximately 10% of the grain boundaries were wet by a thin layer of a second phase, deduced to be BaCuO2. The remaining boundaries were sharp grain boundaries. The grain structure near the sharp grain boundaries was tetragonal. These two types of grain boundaries are thought to be responsible for Jc being zero.

Raw Materials Use By Mississippi Furniture Manufacturers, 1989, Mark A. Glaeser, Steven H. Bullard, Larry Doolittle, Philip Steele

Faculty Publications

Mississippi's furniture industry has grown rapidly in recent years and now ranks nationally in production of specific types of furniture. Furniture pmducers in the state use many types of wood and nonwood raw materials. Raw materials expenditures were almost $330 million for 92 firms that responded to a 1989 survey. The survey included upholstered and nonupholstered furniture producers as well as hardwood dimension and frame producers. Substantial amounts of these raw materials were obtained from suppliers within the state.

Estimating Hardwood Sawmill Conversion Efficiency Based On Sawing Machine And Log Characteristics, Michael W. Wade, Steven H. Bullard, Philip Steele, Philip A. Araman Jan 1992

Estimating Hardwood Sawmill Conversion Efficiency Based On Sawing Machine And Log Characteristics, Michael W. Wade, Steven H. Bullard, Philip Steele, Philip A. Araman

Faculty Publications

Increased problems of hardwood timber availability have caused many sawmiller, industry analysts, and planners to recognize the importance of sawmill conversion efficiency. Conversion efficiency not only affects sawmill profits, but is also important on a much broader level. Timber supply issues have caused resource planners and policy makers to consider the effects of conversion efficiency on the utilization and depletion of the timber resource. Improvements in sawmill conversion efficiency would favorably impact sawmill profits, and would be equivalent in effect to extending existing supplies of standing timber. An equation was developed to estimate lumber recovery factor for hardwood sawmills based …

Economics Of Direct Seeding And Planting For Establishing Oak Stands On Old-Field Sites In The South., Steven H. Bullard, John D. Hodges, Robert L. Johnson, Thomas J. Straka Jan 1992

Economics Of Direct Seeding And Planting For Establishing Oak Stands On Old-Field Sites In The South., Steven H. Bullard, John D. Hodges, Robert L. Johnson, Thomas J. Straka

Faculty Publications

On old-field sites in the South, oak stand may be established by direct seeding of acorns, or by planting seed- lings. Planting seedlings costs approximately 21/2 times the cost of direct seeding on a per acre basis, and based on our study of overall costs and returns, we conclude that in most cases the additional costs of planting are not justified by the additional benefits. Direct seeding is therefore an eco- nomically viable alternative to planting, although success with seeding requires careful selection of species/site combinations and proper seed handling and storage

Slip Length In A Dilute Gas, Alejandro Garcia, D. Morris, L. Hannon Jan 1992

Slip Length In A Dilute Gas, Alejandro Garcia, D. Morris, L. Hannon

Faculty Publications

We study the phenomenon of slip length using molecular dynamics and direct simulation Monte Carlo simulations of a dilute gas. Our work extends the range of Knudsen numbers that have been previously studied. In a recent paper, Bhattacharya and Lie [Phys. Rev. 43, 761 (1991)] suggest a logarithmic dependence of slip length on Knudsen number. By a simple redefinition of the mean free path, we obtain good agreement between simulation results and Maxwell theory for slip length. The anomalies seen by Bhattacharya and Lie appear to be due to their definition of the mean free path.

Unequal Error Protection Qpsk Modulation Codes, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin Jan 1992

Unequal Error Protection Qpsk Modulation Codes, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin

Faculty Publications

The authors use binary linear UEP (LUEP) codes, in combination with a QPSK signal set and Gray mapping, to obtain new efficient block QPSK modulation codes with unequal minimum squared Euclidean distances. They give several examples of codes that have the same minimum squared Euclidean distance as the best QPSK modulation codes of the same rate and length. A new suboptimal two-stage soft-decision decoding is applied to LUEP QPSK modulation codes.

Relative Kerf And Sawing Variation Values For Some Hardwood Sawing Machines, Philip Steele, Michael W. Wade, Steven H. Bullard, Philip A. Araman Jan 1992

Relative Kerf And Sawing Variation Values For Some Hardwood Sawing Machines, Philip Steele, Michael W. Wade, Steven H. Bullard, Philip A. Araman

Faculty Publications

Information on the conversion efficiency of sawing machines is important to those involved in the management, maintenance, and design of sawmills. Little information on the conversion characteristics of hardwood sawing machines has been available. This study, based on 266 studies of 6 machine types, provides an analysis of the machine characteristics of kerf width, within-board, between-board, and total sawing variations and wood loss per sawline. Machine conversion efficiency was found to be explained by feedworks and setworks type, and sawblade thickness and type. This analysis of machine characteristics provides information for a rational choice of sawing machines for hardwood sawmills.
