Instruction In College Freshman Composition. Final Report., Ross M. Jewell, John Cowley, Gerald Bisbey

Faculty Publications

The research attempted to determine whether or not there was any difference between the scores of two groups of juniors; both of which had no freshman composition instruction; but one of which (Group 1) had composition instruction in the junior year and the other (Group 2) had not. Three measures; COOP; CEEB; and a theme; were administered at the end of the sophomore year and again at the time when Group 1 completed the course. Comparisons were made between scores of the two groups; of the males of each group; and of the females of each group. Results are: (1) …

Clinical Teaching: Some Experimental Observations, Ralph Scott Jan 1968

Clinical Teaching: Some Experimental Observations, Ralph Scott

Faculty Publications

A study attempted to measure some effects of a 2-week postbaccalaureate workshop on clinical teaching (teaching which provides children with individualized materials and procedures) and to assess administrative encouragement and appreciation of clinical experimentation and innovation. An experimental group of 20 experienced elementary teachers who had participated in the summer workshop and a control group of 49 who had enrolled too late for admission were invited to participate in a clinical teaching experiment. Hypothesis 1; that a higher proportion of the experimental group would agree to participate in a project requiring a clinical report; was not supported. Hypothesis 2 was …

The Elementary School Counselor: A Man Of Action, Robert Mendelson

Faculty Publications

The elementary school counselor; a newly-emerged member of the pupil personnel term; is a specialist whose skills are directed toward helping children develop in a healthy; normal way. Research supports the counseling function as one of the primary duties of the elementary school counselor. Although the bulk of …

The Effectiveness Of Videotaped Practice Teaching Sessions In The Preparation Of Elementary Intern Teachers. Final Report., Warren Kallenbach

Faculty Publications

To extend previous research findings on the effectiveness of microteaching techniques, all 40 candidates in the 1967 San Jose State College summer elementary intern teaching program were randomly divided into 2 groups. f3oth groups had the same program except that 1 participated in an oft-campus observation and teaching program; the other participated in an on-campus microteaching program. Five-minute pre- and post-summer lesson excerpts were video tape-recorded for each of the candidates. These were judged independently by each member of 2 independent teams of trained evaluators using the Stanford Teacher Competence Appraisal Guide and the Instrument for the Observation of Teaching …

Toward A Restatement Of Professional Ethics, William F. Swindler Jun 1966

Toward A Restatement Of Professional Ethics, William F. Swindler

Faculty Publications

The attitude of the courts and the practitioners is in a state of change, recognizing instances where group-practice is necessary and proper. Professor Swindler asserts that the Canons of Ethics must be revised to indicate the acceptance by the legal profession of such group-practice, particularly if the indigent and low-income client is to be served properly. Suggested revisions to the applicable Canons reflect the author's opinion.

Punishment By SD Associated With Fixed‐Ratio Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson Jan 1965

Punishment By SD Associated With Fixed‐Ratio Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Two pigeons were trained with positive reinforcement on a multiple FR VI 2 schedule. The VI 2 component was held constant while the FR component was changed from ratios of 1 to 300. After responding had stabilized at each FR value, VI responses produced briefly either the fixed‐ratio SD or a stimulus uncorrected with either schedule component. Compared to the effects of the uncorrected stimulus change, the fixed‐ratio SD produced a decrease in VI responding proportional to the size of the FR requirement. It is concluded that stimuli associated with high FR schedules served as punishment for the ongoing behavior. …

Escape From SD Associated With Fixed‐Ratio Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson Jan 1964

Escape From SD Associated With Fixed‐Ratio Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Throughout ascending and descending fixed‐ratio (FR) sequences, rats were allowed to terminate the FR stimulus control by pressing a time‐out (TO) lever. To minimize chance or accidental responses on this second lever, three presses were required to produce the 30‐sec SΔ period. As FR performance became more “strained,” there was an increased predisposition to escape from the time‐in stimulus complex. The generality of this finding was extended by obtaining recoverability (independent of the direction of stimulus change) of the FR‐TO function in the descending series. Typically, escapes were produced only during the post‐reinforcement pause; however, under a mixed FR FR …

This review of The Supreme Court on Trial questions why the work’s tackling the age-old issues of the source of judicial review and its constitutionality is particularly novel or unique from other such examinations. Issue is also taken with Brown v. Boards dominance of such discussion and the book’s poor treatment of the desegregation cases.
