Behavioral Parameters Of Drug Action: Signalled And Response‐Independent Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson, Peter B. Corr
Behavioral Parameters Of Drug Action: Signalled And Response‐Independent Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson, Peter B. Corr
Faculty Publications
Four pigeons were initially trained under a multiple variable‐interval 1‐min variable‐interval 1‐min schedule of food reinforcement. For two of the pigeons, a signal was then presented whenever the reinforcer was available in one component; this resulted in positive contrast. For the other two pigeons, the reinforcer was presented independently of responding on a variable‐time schedule in one component; this resulted in negative induction. After 30 to 50 sessions, however, a similar degree of differential responding occurred under both multiple schedules, i.e., high rates in the variable‐interval component and low rates in the other component. Reinforcement frequency remained about the same …

For the past several years; much emphasis has been placed on open enrollment plans involving bussing that enable black and white students to attend schools together. The Laboratory School of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has been involved in such a program since 1968. As the project developed; the potential for very serious problems relating to racial tension and student frustration became evident. To approach these problems and to promote more openness and understanding between students from different communities and differing cultural backgrounds; cross-cultural group counseling sessions were developed. The groups during the past two years have …

Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Faculty Publications
A speech analysis-synthesis system was used to manipulate variance of fundamental frequency and a mechanical rate changer was used to manipulate speech rate. The synthesized and altered voices were tested for realism. Synthesized voices were mistaken for normal 50% to 58% of the time and rate-changed voices were mistaken for normal 78% of the time. Additional studies were conducted to test the effects of these acoustical manipulations on the adjective ratings judges made of speakers. Variance of intonation was increased and decreased by 50% for eight speakers. There was a significantrend for increased intonation to cause voices to be rated …

Utterances of two adults males were analyzed and synthesized by a fast Fourier Transforms method. Each of the two voices was synthesized in each of the twenty‐seven combinations of three levels each of rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ (a total of fifty‐four “voices” generated from two). The effects of the rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ manipulations, the interactive effects of rate and variance of FØ, and the effects due to speaker were all statistically significant predictors of personality ratings given the voices. They accounted for 86%, 4%, 3%, 2%, and I% of the …

The Effects Of An Individualized Instruction Workshop And Its Related Follow-Up Program On The Attitudes And Behavior Of Selected Elementary Teachers And Their Students: Final Report, Helen Dell, Warren Kallenbach
Faculty Publications
The effects of an individualized instruction workshop and its related follow-up program on the attitudes and behavior of selected elementary teachers and their students were discussed in this report. Participants were teachers in a four-day workshop on individualizing instruction. The workshop included training in classroom procedures, managing physical facilities, utilizing human resources, and developing techniques for encouraging students to be self-managing. Evaluation methods, questionnaires and observation indicated a favorable change in teacher behavior. The effects of the inservice program for teachers indicated little or no affect on student attitude and independent work habits. (Appendixes of related program material and a …

Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
The key pecking of two pigeons was reinforced with food on a progressive‐ratio schedule, which required an increasing number of responses for each successive reinforcement: 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. When the subject failed to complete the next ratio in the sequence within 60 min, the session terminated. The number of responses in the final completed ratio was defined as the “breaking point”. After the breaking point had stabilized (60 sessions), it served as a baseline to assess the effects of varying doses (5 to 80 mg/kg) of chlordiazepoxide and phenobarbital, administered intramuscularly 30 min before the sessions. Both drugs …

Primarily a longitudinal and quantitative analysis of achievement functioning; this experiment sought to identify factors which promote or impair the learning of individual children. The 683 Junior High students were divided into one of eight groups according to sex; race and whether their seventh grade Iowa Test of Basic Skills Composite score was above or below that expected from their Kindergarten Metropolitan Readiness Test performance. The incidence of males and females making unexpected gains (Ups) or losses (Downs) was approximately the same; but a significantly greater proportion of black children made greater than expected achievement gains. Thirty-three Up Ss were …

A brief history of the integration efforts of the school and the resulting interracial conflict is presented. From this background evolved the cross-cultural groups which are the focus of this paper. Essentially; discussion was used for exploring the issues which were identified as impediments to good relationships within the school; (1) too few black faculty and students; (2) the impact of "Tomism;" (3) geographic location of students' homes; (4) differing interests of black and white students; (5) the need for extra-school interracial contact; and (6) inhibitions; both social and parental; against interracial contact; especially dating. The results of a questionnaire; …
The Specific Theory Of Academic Freedom And The General Issue Of Civil Liberty, William W. Van Alstyne
The Specific Theory Of Academic Freedom And The General Issue Of Civil Liberty, William W. Van Alstyne
Faculty Publications
Academic freedom has been blurred in law and in popular usage. Its clarification should enable the Supreme Court to grant it explicit protection under the Constitution as an identifiable subset of First Amendment freedoms. Its identification with the professional endeavors of faculty members, moreover, should reduce the tendency of institutions to intrude upon the aprofessional personal liberties of the faculty even while adequately protecting the extramural professional pursuits of the faculty and assuring them of equal protection in their interests as private citizens. Adjustments of standards by the American Association of University Professors, more definitely distinguishing the special accountability of …

Repeated Acquisition As A Behavioral Baseline, Donald M. Thompson
Repeated Acquisition As A Behavioral Baseline, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
The Boren (1963) technique for studying variables affecting acquisition with an individual-S design was modified and used with pigeons. The sensitivity and reversibility of the steady-state baseline were demonstrated by temporarily removing the different Stimuli correlated with the different members of the chain. This “tandem” probe produced a substantial increase in the number of learning errors. © 1970, Psychonomic Journals, Inc.. All rights reserved.
