1985 Survey Of Trends And Developments On Religious Liberty In The Courts, Carl H. Esbeck
1985 Survey Of Trends And Developments On Religious Liberty In The Courts, Carl H. Esbeck
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this survey is to note important caselaw developments in the state and lower federal courts concerning religious liberty during 1985. Purposely omitted are the widely reported United State Supreme Court opinions, as well as cases where the high court has granted review during its 1985-86 term. The focus here is to collect significant cases that may otherwise escape broad attention. Only the facts and rationale of each court's decision is recorded. No editorial comment on the merits of these cases is intended.

Dietary Calcium And Blood Pressure In National Health And Nutrition Examination Surveys I And Ii, Christopher Sempos, Richard Cooper, Mary Grace Kovar, Clifford Johnson, Terrence Drizd, Elizabeth Yetley

It has recently been reported that a low intake of calcium may be a risk factor for hypertension. In view of the contradictory results, even when the same survey data base has been used by different researchers, an in-depth analysis was undertaken of the data provided by the two cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Both surveys, conducted in consecutive 4-year intervals during the 1970s, were designed to examine representative samples of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. The overall descriptive findings in relation to mean blood pressure and calcium intake were virtually identical in the two …

Blood pressure levels, anthropometric parameters, and dietary intakes were assessed in 1981 and 1983 in a population of black (n = 236) and white (n = 296) adolescent girls, aged 14 and 16 years in 1983. The 14-year-old black girls exhibited significantly higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures than whites in both years. Body weight and Quetelet index were more strongly associated with blood pressure than were height and triceps skinfold thickness. Correcting blood pressures for weight, Quetelet index, 2-year changes in height, and age at menarche decreased in each case (but did not negate) the observed race differences …

Effect Of Adrenalectomy On In Vivo Glucose Metabolism In Insulin Resistant Zucker Obese Rats, Marjorie Freedman, Judith Stern, G. Reaven, C. Mondon
Effect Of Adrenalectomy On In Vivo Glucose Metabolism In Insulin Resistant Zucker Obese Rats, Marjorie Freedman, Judith Stern, G. Reaven, C. Mondon
Faculty Publications
Lean (Fa/?) and obese (fa/fa) Zucker rats were adrenalectomized (ADX) in order to assess the contribution of adrenal hormones to insulin resistance of the obese Zucker rat. Glucose utilization was measured using an insulin suppression test.Sham-operated obese rats gained almost twice as much weight as sham-operated lean littermates. However, body weight gain of ADX animals was comparable in both genotypes. It was significantly less than that of the respective sham-operated controls. Body weight differences can be accounted for almost entirely by a marked loss of adipose tissue.Although insulin resistance may be attributable to obesity in part, steroid hormones are thought …

Allocating Consumptive Water Rights In A Riparian Jurisdiction: Defining The Relationship Between Public And Private Interests, Lynda L. Butler
Allocating Consumptive Water Rights In A Riparian Jurisdiction: Defining The Relationship Between Public And Private Interests, Lynda L. Butler
Faculty Publications
Historically, water consumption in the eastern United States has been governed by the common-law riparian doctrine. Fashioned to protect the domestic uses of private individuals in a largely agrarian society, the doctrine is not well suited to today's environment in which the demands of public users have grown enormously. Even in the East, where water has long been abundant, the effects of increased consumption, pollution, and periodic drought have brought the continued viability of the doctrine into question. Professor Butler examines the legal standards which have developed under the riparian doctrine and identifies three principal areas in which the doctrine …

Microbial Degradation Of The Leachable And Lignocellulosic Components Of Leaves And Wood From Rhizophora Mangle In A Tropical Mangrove Swamp, Ronald Benner, Robert E. Hodson
Faculty Publications
Preparations of uniformly [14C] labeled mangrove leaves and specifically radiolabeled [14C-lignin] lignocelluloses and [14C -polysaccharide]lignocelluloses from mangrove leaves and wood were used in experiments to determine the microbial rates of mineralization of the leachable and lignocellulosic components of mangrove detritus in aerobic and anaerobic sediments of a tropical mangrove swamp. The bulk of the leachable fraction from mangrove leaves was mineralized relatively rapidly and was assimilated into microbial biomass with high efficiency (30 %). In contrast, rates of mineralization of the lignocellulosic component of mangrove leaves and wood were 10fold lower than mineralization rates …

Faculty Publications
In major prospective studies it has been reported that high heart rate at rest predicts the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) or cardiovascular disease (CVD) in men, but the mechanisms producing these relationships are unknown. Since lipoprotein levels contribute strongly to the risk of CHD and CVD, we examined the relationship of resting heart rate to plasma concentrations of high-density (HDL), low-density (LDL), and very low-density (VLDL) lipoproteins, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and A-II, and serum concentrations of lipoprotein subfractions in 81 men to determine if atherogenic lipoproteins could potentially induce the reported association of heart rate with development of …

Chromatofocusing In The Purification And Separation Of Apo- And Holo-(Vitamin D-Binding Protein), M. J. Keenan, R. P. Holmes
Faculty Publications
Chromatofocusing was used to purify the vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) from pig plasma in a procedure that consisted of an initial DEAE-cellulose chromatography followed by DEAE-Sephadex chromatography, with final purification by chromatofocusing. The protein was purified 184-fold over its concentration in plasma. When the plasma was labelled with a tracer concentration of [3H]calcidiol, it was apparent that holo- and apo-DBP did not co-chromatograph on chromatofocusing. The separation of these two forms of DBP on chromatofocusing was verified by using purified apo-DBP mixed with either a tracer or a saturating concentration of calcidiol. This separation was consistent with differences observed in …

Racial Differences In The Relation Of Birth Weight And Gestational Age To Neonatal Mortality, Greg R. Alexander, Mark E. Tompkins, Joan M. Altekruse, Carlton A. Hornung
Faculty Publications
Utilizing South Carolina live birth-infant death cohort files for the period 1975-80, this study examines the bivariate distribution of birth weight gestational age (BW-GA), intrauterine growth curves, and BW-GA specific neonatal mortality rates (NMRs) by race. Comparison of BW-GA distributions revealed an appreciable shift between racial subgroups. Nonwhites, on the average, were born 1 week earlier and 270 grams lighter in weight than whites. In addition to racial differences in rates of intrauterine growth, nonwhites experienced lower BW-GA NMRs than whites in BW-GA categories < 3,000 grams and < 38 weeks. However, the improved mortality experience of nonwhites at more immature BW-GA categories was not consistently present when different cause-specific NMRs were considered.
These persistent racial variations highlight continuing issues regarding both the use of a single norm for …

Effects Of Water Quality And Water Quantity On Nutritional Status: Findings From A South Indian Community, James R. Hébert
Faculty Publications
Quantitative assessments of the relative effects on health of various aspects of water supply are virtually absent from the literature. Despite the lack of information, resources are being allocated throughout the developing world, for projects related to water and sanitation. The present study was designed specifically to overcome many of the methodological problems that other researchers have faced. Data were collected concerning the nutritional status of 627 children in three urban communities in South India. Information was also collected on water quality, water quantity, household sanitation, socioeconomic conditions, and housing. A statistical technique is presented that allows for controlling potential …

Comparison Of Haitian Children In A Nutrition Intervention Programme With Children In The Haitian National Nutrition Survey, G. G. Berggren, James R. Hébert, C. M. Waternaux
Faculty Publications
Weight-for-height and height-for-age data were compared for preschool-age Haitian children enrolled in a community health and nutrition intervention programme and children measured in the Haiti national nutrition survey of 1978. Cross-sections of the longitudinal data of the intervention programme corresponding to the season when the national survey was conducted (May to September) were chosen for the three years of available programme data (1969, 1970, 1971). Significantly less stunting was found in children in the 1970 and 1971 intervention group than in the children covered by the national survey. Tests of trend also showed that the height (or length) status of …
Dependence Of Fishery Species On Salt Marshes: The Role Of Food And Refuge, Donald F. Boesch, R. Eugune Turner
Dependence Of Fishery Species On Salt Marshes: The Role Of Food And Refuge, Donald F. Boesch, R. Eugune Turner
Faculty Publications
Salt marshes are widely believed to serve as nurseries for many fishes and crustaceans of fishery value as a result of the high production of vascular plant detritus and the protection from predation offered by shallow, spatially complex habitats. Comparisons of the yields of species which reside in salt marsh habitats during critical life history stages (such as penaeid shrimp) with the area of such habitats and their greater densities in flooded marshes and associated tidal creeks support the premise that marshes enhance the yield of such species. A range of evidence, including the amount of detrital export from marshes, …

Effect Of A Prescribed Fire On Herbage Production In Southwestern Ponderosa Pine On Sedimentary Soils, Brian P. Oswald, W. Wallace Covington
Faculty Publications
An area burned by prescription in 1977 and a nearby unburned area were measured in 1974 and 1980 to determine effects of the burn on herbage and forage production. Herbage production on the burned area increased significantly in 1980 over its 1974 level, in addition to being greater than the 1980 control production. However, the proportion of forage production to total herbage production in 1980 on the burned area decreased after the burn, and was significantly less than the control area forage production. This reduction in forage production can be attributed to the increase of nonforage species, notably bracken fern. …

A randomized, crossover trial was carried out on the effect of moderate sodium reduction on red-blood-cell sodium metabolism. The participants were healthy high school students (mean age = 16 years, n = 33). Changes in sodium-lithium countertransport and intracellular sodium concentration were evaluated 24 days after a decrease in dietary sodium from approximately 110 to 40 mEq per day. Dietary sodium restriction had no significant effect on either sodium-lithium countertransport or intracellular sodium concentration. © 1984 American Heart Association, Inc.

Studies showing an increase in plasma concentration of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) with moderate exercise have usually rejected the role of body weight change in the HDL-C raising process, ostensibly because the amount of weight lost has been negligible. To investigate HDL-C changes more thoroughly, we followed initially sedentary middle-aged men randomly assigned to either a moderate running (N=36) or a sedentary control (N=28) group for one year. Among runners, one-year changes in plasma HDL-C concentrations correlated strongly with their body weight changes (r = -0.53, P < 0.001). Curve-fitting procedures and regression analysis suggested that processes associated with weight change produce much of the plasma HDL-C changes induced by moderate exercise and that changes in HDL-C concentration predominantly reflect changes in the reputedly anti-atherogenic HDL2 sub-component. Further, the interaction between weight change and plasma HDL-C concentration was significantly different (P

Studies of six 8-9-month-old rams showed that the specific activities of myoinositol-1-phosphate synthase (EC 5.5.1.4) were highest in epididymal spermatozoa, intermediate in testis and lowest in epididymal tissue. The activity per spermatozoon decreased from caput to cauda. The levels of activity of myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase in ejaculated spermatozoa from four 3-year-old rams and the seminal vesicles of two 3-year-old rams were insignificant, but in pooled Sertoli cells from the testes of young lambs, the specific activity was much lower than in epididymal spermatozoa although activity per cell was of the same order of magnitude. We conclude that epididymal spermatozoa contain a …

Age-standardized death rates from all causes for persons age 35-74 fell 23 per cent, 1968-1979. The monotonic decline was interrupted by only one period of excess influenza mortality. In the late 1970s, however, the decline in mortality decelerated and no further decrease was observed, 1979-1981. The recurrence of epidemic influenza contributed significantly to this trend although it would appear that the underlying mortality pattern has begun to change.

Nearly everyone concedes that Egypt is faced with a serious food problem. The Egyptian agricultural sector is unable to feed the increasing and more affluent population. In 1980, agricultural output was estimated to be increasing by about 2.0 percent annually, whereas the country's annual population growth rate was estimated at about 2.3 percent. If the difference in these growth rates continues, Egypt must increase imports each year just to maintain per capita consumption at the present level [3].

Recent Trends In Coronary Risk Factors In The Ussr, R. Cooper, A. Schatzkin
Faculty Publications
The Soviet Union has experienced an increase in the incidence of coronary heart disease over the last 15 years sufficient to result in an overall deterioration in the health of adults. The distribution of coronary risk factors, and the secular trends in diet and cigarette consumption provide a potential explanation for the upsurge in death rates. The animal fat content of the Soviet diet has been steadily enriched since the 1950s and cigarette production increased 72 per cent from 1959 to 1980. The post-Stalin orientation of the Soviet economy toward a policy of motivating the work force primarily through the …

Religiously motivated civil disobedience in the area of social and human services ministries of religious organizations has become increasingly widespread. With growing governmental involvement in the lives of citizens and moves by federal and state agencies to narrowly confine and define religious activities, it comes as no surprise that conflict over the proper role of the state has crept as well into the arena of social and human services conducted from religious motivation. The current litigation and legislation is principally focused on state regulation by certification or licensing requirements that are expanding from health, fire, and safety concerns into the …

A marked improvement in health status for black adults took place over the last decade in the United States. Life expectancy for black men increased 4.6 years between 1968 and 1978, while for black women the increase was 5.7 years. Death rates for the age group 35-74 decreased approximately 25 percent for blacks over the same period. The largest contribution to this improvement was made by cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease and stroke). Although similar improvement was observed in the white population, on both a percentage and absolute basis the change was greater for blacks. For the first time in …
