Effects Of Fall Fertilizer Applications Of Mitotic Index And Bud Dormancy Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Hans Michael Williams, David B. South
Faculty Publications
A series of studies examined the effects of fall fertilization with diammoniwn phosphate (DAP) on mitotic index and bud donnancy [as measured by mean days to budbreak (DBB)] of two half-sib seed sources of loblolly pine. The first study tested different rates of DAP (0, 67, and 202 kg Nlha), the second study compared DAP with ammoniwnnitrate, and the third study examined the effect of different application dates (September 28, October 19, and November 9). An increase in mitotic index of unfertilized seedlings was observed during October and was due to developmental activity which follows initial budset. Differences in mitotic …

Pine Tip Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Infestation Rates As Influenced By Site And Stand Characteristics In Loblolly Pine Plantations In East Texas, James R. Meeker, David Kulhavy
Faculty Publications
Three young loblolly pine plantations grown on contrasting soil types produced quantitatively and qualitatively different host material for pine tip moths during 1985 and 1986. Amounts, periodicity, and availability of soil moisture regulated internal moisture conditions within host trees. Host xylem moisture potential in conjunction with soil nutrient status governed tree growth and influenced pine tip moth infestation rates.
Pines on a sandy site exhibited the poorest growth with lowest infestation rates, indicative of low-quality hosts with little if any tolerance to damage. A clayey site produced vigorous plant growth with moderate infestation rates. The less apparent hosts appeared capable …

Seasonal Response Of Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii Var. Elliottii Engelm.) Photosynthesis To Long‐Term Exposure To Ozone And Acidic Precipitation, David P. Byres, Jon D. Johnson, Thomas J. Dean
Faculty Publications
Four half‐sib families of slash pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii) were planted in open‐top chambers and exposed to ozone and simulated acidic precipitation (3: 7 molar ratio of nitric and sulphuric acids). The 4 ozone treatments were (1) charcoal‐filtered air, (2) unfiltered ambient air, (3) twice ambient and (4) three times ambient ozone, with treatments applied 12 h per day, 11 months per year for 28 months. Seedlings were irrigated weekly with one of three rain acidities: pH 33, 4.3 or 5.3 at a total rainfall equivalent of 133 cm per year. Photosynthetic rates were measured approximately every 10 weeks, …

Long‐Term Effects Of Ozone And Simulated Acid Rain On The Foliage Dynamics Of Slash Pine (Pinus Elliottii Var. Elliottii Engelm.), David P. Byres, Thomas J. Dean, Jon D. Johnson
Faculty Publications
Seedlings from four half‐sib families of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm. were planted in open‐top chambers, and exposed to ozone and simulated acidic precipitation. Treatments were applied for 11 months per year for 28 months. The ozone concentrations were: charcoal filtered air (CF), nonfiltered ambient air (1×), twice the nonfiltered level (2 ×) and three times the nonfiltered level (3 ×). Ozone exposures were computer controlled to follow natural diurnal fluctuations in ambient ozone concentrations. Simulated acid rain at pH 3.3, 4.3 or 5.3 was delivered weekly at the same volume as average weekly rainfall to all chambers. Leaf area, …

Time-Courses In The Retention Of Food Material In The Bivalves Potamocorbula Amurensis And Macoma Balthica: Significance To The Absorption Of Carbon And Chromium, Alan W. Decho, Samuel N. Luoma
Faculty Publications
Time courses for ingestion, retention and release via feces of microbial food was investigated using 2 bivalves with different feeding strategies, Potamocorbula amurensis, and Macoma balthica. The results showed 2 pathways for the uptake of food material in these clams. The first is represented by an initial label pulse in the feces. The second pathway operates over longer time periods. Inert 51Cr-labeled beads were used to determine time frames for these pathways. The first pathway, involving extracellular digestion and intestinal uptake, is relatively inefficient in the digestion of bacterial cells by P. amurensis but more efficient in …

Formation Of Pentosidine During Nonenzymatic Browning Of Proteins By Glucose, Daniel G. Dyer, James A. Blackledge, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

A fluorescent compound has been detected in proteins browned during Maillard reactions with glucose in vitro and shown to be identical to pentosidine, a pentose- derived fluorescent cross-link formed between arginine and lysine residues in collagen (Sell, D. R., and Monnier, V. M. (1989) J. Biol. Chem. 264, 21597- 2 1602). Pentosidine was the major fluorophore formed during nonenzymatic browning of ribonuclease and lysozyme by glucose, but accounted for <1% of nondisulfide cross-links in protein dimers formed during the reaction. Pentosidine was formed in greatest yields in reactions of pentoses with lysine and arginine in model systems but was also formed from glucose, fructose, ascorbate, Amadori compounds, 3-deoxyglucosone, and other sugars. Pentosidine was not formed from peroxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids or malondialdehyde. Its formation from carbohydrates was inhibited under nitrogen or anaerobic conditions and by aminoguanidine, an inhibitor of advanced glycation and browning reactions. Pentosidine was detected in human lens proteins, where its concentration increased gradually with age, but it did not exceed trace concentrations (55 Fmol/mol lysine), even in the 80-year-old lens. Although its precise carbohydrate source in vivo is uncertain and it is present in only trace concentrations in tissue proteins, pentosidine appears to be a useful biomarker for assessing cumulative damage to proteins by nonenzymatic browning reactions with carbohydrates.

Glycation, oxidation, and nonenzymatic browning of protein have all been implicated in the development of diabetic complications. The initial product of glycation of protein, fructoselysine (FL), undergoes further reactions, yielding a complex mixture of browning products, including the fluorescent lysine-arginine cross-link, pentosidine. Alternatively, FL may be cleaved oxidatively to form N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), while glycated hydroxylysine, an amino-acid unique to collagen, may yield N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)hydroxylysine (CMhL). We have measured FL, pentosidine, fluorescence (excitation = 328 nm, emission = 378 nm), CML, and CMhL in insoluble skin collagen from 14 insulin-dependent diabetic patients before and after a 4-mo period of intensive therapy to …

Computer-Simulated Evaluation Of Possible Mechanisms For Quenching Heavy Metal Ion Activity In Plant Vacuoles: I. Cadmium, Jian Wang, Bill P. Evangelou, Mark T. Nielsen, George J. Wagner
Faculty Publications
Various mechanisms have been suggested for the quenching of Cd ion activity in plant vacuoles. These include solution complexation with organic acids and sulfhydryl-containing peptides and precipitation as sulfides. Because direct experimental support for these mechanisms is lacking and difficult to obtain, we have used a computer model to evaluate the quenching role of possible organic and inorganic ligands of tobacco cultured cells exposed to Cd. Results of this thermodynamic evaluation, which assumes that a chemical equilibrium state is met in the vacuole, support the conclusion that sulfhydryl-containing peptides and certain organic acids may form soluble Cd complexes. Although complexation …

Teaching In A Liberal Arts College: How Foreign Language Courses Contribute To "Writing Across The Curriculum" Programs, Ilona Klein
Faculty Publications
This essay shares some thoughts about the need for interaction between foreign language instructors and English teachers, both in high schools and at the university level. As a foreign language teacher for the past nine years (the last four in a liberal arts college), I have encountered several problems and difficulties that could be overcome, I believe, if English, Writing, and Foreign Language departments addressed them together. I do not claim to be able to give definite answers, since many pedagogical concepts concerting L2 acquisition/learning and their possible application to writing programs remain misunderstood or are presently debated by teacher …

Inbred strain 2 guinea pigs were vaccinated with Mycobacterium bovis BCG or were left unvaccinated. They were maintained for 6 weeks on defined, isocaloric diets containing either 30% (control animals) or 10% (animals receiving low protein) ovalbumin as the sole protein source. Animals were challenged by the respiratory route with a low dose of virulent M. tuberculosis H37Rv and killed 4 weeks later. Protein-malnourished animals were not protected by previous vaccination with BCG. Lymphocytes isolated from various tissues were tested in vitro for proliferative responses to mitogen (concanavalin A) and antigen (purified protein derivative [PPD]), production of interleukin-2 (IL-2), and …

This article considers the kinds of limits on withholding that each of these policies might plausibly support, compares these limits to the judicial approaches taken in the refusal of treatment cases, and explores how apparent conflicts between these state goals and the interests of the patients might be resolved. Because this article focuses exclusively on the state's interests, however, it necessarily isolates and considers only one portion of a complex problem involving the interests of patients, families, providers, and others. No comprehensive examination of the nature and weight of the patient's interests or those of other involved parties is attempted. …

Seven vegetables and one fruit from two roadside stands and two major local supermarkets were analyzed for their ascorbic acid content. Produce was sampled during a nine week period from late July through September of 1987. Significant differences at the 0.05 level for ascorbic acid were observed between supermarket and roadside stand produce for potato, cauliflower, cabbage and tomato while no significant differences were found between cantaloupe, broccoli, green peppers and spinach from either market. Cabbage was the only supermarket item that was significantly higher in ascorbic acid concentration. Very little dehydroascorbic acid was shown to be present in these …

How Do Harpacticoid Grazing Rates Differ Over A Tidal Cycle? Field Verification Using Chlorophyll-Pigment Analyses, Alan W. Decho
How Do Harpacticoid Grazing Rates Differ Over A Tidal Cycle? Field Verification Using Chlorophyll-Pigment Analyses, Alan W. Decho
Faculty Publications
Four species of meiobenthic copepods were examined for diatom feeding. Microscopic analysis of gut-pellet contents from field-collected individuals indicated frequent ingestion of diatoms by 3 harpacticoids (Scottolana canadensis, Microarthridion littorale, Cletocamptus deitersi) while occasional diatom ingestion occurred Paronychocamptus huntsmani. Frustules were usually empty and broken, indicating that contents were digested. Laboratory experiments using 14C-labeling showed assimilation of diatoms by the 3 species examined. Field grazing rate studies were conducted over different portions of a tidal cycle using fluorescent chlorophyll-pigment analysis of gut-contents. Highest diatom consumption (p<0.05) occurred just after the mudflat became exposed (i.e. Early Low Water level, ELW) for S. canadensis, while consumption at Late Low Water …0.05)>

We have investigated the mechanisms whereby equimolar quantities of ribosomal proteins accumulate and assemble into ribosomes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extra copies of the cry1 or RPL16 genes encoding ribosomal proteins rp59 or L16 were introduced into yeast by transformation. Excess cry1 or RPL16 mRNA accumulated in polyribosomes in these cells and was translated at wild-type rates into rp59 or L16 proteins. These excess proteins were degraded until their levels reached those of other ribosomal proteins. Identical results were obtained when the transcription of RPL16A was rapidly induced using GAL1-RPL16A promoter fusions, including a construct in which the entire …

Since 1976 there has been a leveling off or slowdown in the rate of decline in coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality. The age-adjusted absolute annual rate of decline in CHD mortality rates during 1968-75 (Δ rate/100,000 population/year) was virtually identical for White males (-7.54), Black males (-7.85), and Black females (-7.20), and somewhat lower for White females (-4.25). During 1976-85, however, the secular trends diverged considerably. Age-adjusted rates continued to decline at the same annual rate for White males, while the decline was approximately half as steep for the other three race-sex groups. During 1976-85 there was also a leveling …

The concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were followed for 35 days in cell-free liquid medium containing 100, 50, or 0% Murashige-Skoog (MS) salt base. Although the concentrations of NAA or 2,4-D remained constant the level of IAA decreased to only 11% of the original concentration after 35 days in the presence of 100% MS salt base. The observed rate of IAA degradation was accelerated by the presence of MS salts.
