Today's world is loaded with dangers and dangerous people; it's a place where kids-good and bad, naive and worldly, cautious and reckless-are at risk. The sources of these risks are sometimes masked in the mixed messages children learn from society-messages about gender roles, about behavior, about what's right and what's not.
Some of the fuzzy messages that concern me most are the ones that influence the behavior of young adult males. All teachers know that teenage boys can be some of the most obnoxious creatures on earth. I know this from personal experience as a former obnoxious boy and as …

This paper presents results of a survey that gathered information on the use of popular culture examples in college library instruction sessions; including the types of popular culture materials currently being used as examples; the types of courses in which they are used; the librarians' purposes in using the examples; and the librarians' impressions of whether or not the examples had an effect on the success of the session. A call for participation in the survey was distributed through two online discussion lists; BI-L and LIBREF-L during December 2001. Librarians working at the University of Northern Iowa were also invited …

Image Magnification Using Level-Set Reconstruction, Bryan S. Morse, Duane Schwartzwald
Faculty Publications
Image magnification is a common problem in imaging applications, requiring interpolation to “read between the pixels”. Although many magnification/interpolation algorithms have been proposed in the literature, all methods must suffer to some degree the effects of impefect reconstruction―false high-frequency content introduced by the underlying original sampling. Most often, these effects manifest themselves as jagged contours in the image. This paper presents a method for constrained smoothing of such artifacts that attempts to produce smooth reconstructions of the image’s level curves while still maintaining image fidelity. This is similar to other iterative reconstruction algorithms and to Bayesian restoration techniques, but instead …

Concentration Gradient, Diffusion, And Flow Through Open Porous Medium Near Percolation Threshold Via Computer Simulations, Ras B. Pandey, J.F. Gettrust, D. Stauffer
Concentration Gradient, Diffusion, And Flow Through Open Porous Medium Near Percolation Threshold Via Computer Simulations, Ras B. Pandey, J.F. Gettrust, D. Stauffer
Faculty Publications
The interacting lattice gas model is used to simulate fluid flow through an open percolating porous medium with the fluid entering at the source-end and leaving from the opposite end. The shape of the steady-state concentration profile and therefore the gradient field depends on the porosity (p). The root mean square (rms) displacements of fluid and its constituents (tracers) show a drift power-law behavior, R∝t in the asymptotic regime (t→∞). The flux current density (j) is found to scale with the porosity according to, j∝(Δp)β with Δp …
A Dipolar Coupling Based Strategy For Simultaneous Resonance Assignment And Structure Determination Of Protein Backbones, Fang Tian, Homayoun Valafar, James H. Prestegard
A Dipolar Coupling Based Strategy For Simultaneous Resonance Assignment And Structure Determination Of Protein Backbones, Fang Tian, Homayoun Valafar, James H. Prestegard
Faculty Publications
A new approach for simultaneous protein backbone resonance assignment and structure determination by NMR is introduced. This approach relies on recent advances in high-resolution NMR spectroscopy that allow observation of anisotropic interactions, such as dipolar couplings, from proteins partially aligned in field ordered media. Residual dipolar couplings are used for both geometric information and a filter in the assembly of residues in a sequential manner. Experimental data were collected in less than one week on a small redox protein, rubredoxin, that was 15N enriched but not enriched above 1% natural abundance in 13C. Given the acceleration possible with partial 13C …
Stacked Subwavelength Gratings As Circular Polarization Filters, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman
Stacked Subwavelength Gratings As Circular Polarization Filters, Gregory P. Nordin, P. C. Deguzman
Faculty Publications
We have stacked subwavelength gratings (SWGs) on a single substrate to create a compact, integrated circular polarization filter. The SWGs consist of a wire grid polarizer and a broadband form-birefringent quarter-wave plate (QWP). Rigorous coupled-wave analysis was used to design the QWP for operation over the 3.5-5.0 m wavelength range. The fabricated silicon broadband QWP exhibited a phase retardance of 82-97° across this wavelength range. Two stacked structures are presented, each with a different wire grid polarizer fabricated on an organic planarization layer (SU-8) that is deposited on a QWP grating. Transmittance measurements of the first structure when illuminated with …

Origin Of Lateral Variation Of Seismic Wave Velocities And Density In The Deep Mantle, Shun Ichiro Karato, Bijaya B. Karki
Faculty Publications
Strong constraints can be placed on the origin of heterogeneity of seismic wave velocities and density if the observed ratios of various parameters are compared with mineral physics predictions. They include the shear to compressional wave velocity heterogeneity ratio, R ≡ δ log V / δ log V , the bulk sound to shear wave velocity heterogeneity ratio, R ≡ δ log V / δ log V , and the density to velocity heterogeneity ratio, R ≡ δ log ρ / δ log V . Using mineral physics considerations, we calculate these ratios in the lower mantle corresponding to the …

Introducing Cooperative Learning Through A Faculty Instructional Development Program, Nikos J. Mourtos, Emily L. Allen
Faculty Publications
Cooperative Learning was officially introduced in the College of Engineering at San Jose State University in 1995 with a two-day workshop. The Faculty Instructional Development Program in the college maintains interest in the subjsect and provides support for instructors who use Cooperative Learning, through workshops and informal discussions (Conversations on Teaching). This paper discusses the effectiveness of the program in introducing, promoting, and implementing Cooperative Learning among the faculty and students in the college of engineering. A variety of performance criteria have been used in this assessment, some faculty-centered and some student-centered. The results indicate that although a relatively small …
Effective Community Policing Performance Measures, Geoffrey P. Alpert, Daniel Flynn, Alex R. Piquero
Effective Community Policing Performance Measures, Geoffrey P. Alpert, Daniel Flynn, Alex R. Piquero
Faculty Publications
As the philosophy of policing moves from a traditional to a community-oriented approach, performance measures must shift as well. Unlike the typical police performance measures of arrest and crime rates found in traditional police philosophies, community-oriented policing performance measures are more general and tend to measure the extent to which police affect the quality of life in the communities they serve as well as the problems they solve. This manuscript begins the process of developing effective community policing performance measures and presents three case studies through which objectives and performance measures are conceptualized.
Chicago Newspaper Theater Critics Of The Early 20th Century, Scott B. Fosdick
Chicago Newspaper Theater Critics Of The Early 20th Century, Scott B. Fosdick
Faculty Publications
In the early years of the twentieth century, when live theater dominated the entertainment world and print media led public discourse, each without competition from electronic forms, the daily newspaper theater critic mediated ideas and values quite differently than today’s critics, whose main function has been reduced to that of a consumer guide. This article examines the corps of theater critics who served ten Chicago newspapers about 100 years ago. At a time when news editors were reluctant to cover new ideas and social movements, such as the push for women’s suffrage, theater critics were encountering radical new social ideas …

Poynting's Theorem And Luminal Total Energy Transport In Passive Dielectric Media, Scott Glasgow, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross
Poynting's Theorem And Luminal Total Energy Transport In Passive Dielectric Media, Scott Glasgow, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross
Faculty Publications
Without approximation the energy density in Poynting's theorem for the generally dispersive and passive dielectric medium is demonstrated to be a system total dynamical energy density. Thus the density in Poynting's theorem is a conserved form that by virtue of its positive definiteness prescribes important qualitative and quantitative features of the medium-field dynamics by rendering the system dynamically closed. This fully three-dimensional result, applicable to anisotropic and inhomogeneous media, is model independent, relying solely on the complex-analytic consequences of causality and passivity. As direct applications of this result, we show 1 that a causal medium responds to a virtual, instantaneous …
Characterization Of Two-Dimensional Finite-Aperture Wire Grid Polarizers By A Spectral-Domain Technique, Michael A. Jensen, Gregory P. Nordin
Characterization Of Two-Dimensional Finite-Aperture Wire Grid Polarizers By A Spectral-Domain Technique, Michael A. Jensen, Gregory P. Nordin
Faculty Publications
We investigate the transmission characteristics of perfectly conducting two-dimensional wire grid polarizers fabricated in finite and infinite apertures using a rigorous spectral-domain mode-matching method. Specifically, the transmission coefficient for both transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarizations, extinction ratio, and diffraction pattern are characterized for a wide variety of geometric and material parameters including aperture dimension, conducting wire fill factor, wire spacing, polarizer thickness, material dielectric constants, and incident wave arrival angle. The results indicate that the transmission behavior is largely insensitive to aperture dimension.

Faculty Publications
Previous studies from our laboratory indicated that a 28-amino-acid carboxyl-terminal truncation of gB caused extensive virus-induced cell fusion (Baghian et al., 1993, J Virol 67, 2396-2401). We tested the ability of additional truncations and mutations within gB to cause cell fusion in the recently established virus-free cell fusion assay (Turner et al., 1998, J. Virol. 72, 873-875). Deletion of the carboxyl-terminal 28 amino acids of gB (gBΔ28), which removed part of the predicted α-helical structure H17b, caused extensive cell fusion. A gB truncation specified by gBΔ36, which removed the entire H17b domain, caused as much cell fusion as the gBΔ28 …

Solar neutrinos from 8B decay have been detected at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory via the charged current (CC) reaction on deuterium and the elastic scattering (ES) of electrons. The flux of νe’s is measured by the CC reaction rate to be φCC(ve) = 1.75 ± 0.07(stat)+0.12−0.11(syst) ± 0.05(theor) × 106 cm−2s−1. Comparison of φCC(ve) to the Super-Kamiokande Collaboration’s precision value of the flux inferred from the ES reaction yields a 3.3σ difference, assuming the systematic uncertainties are normally distributed, providing evidence of an active non-ve component in the solar flux. The total flux of active 8B neutrinos is determined to …

Green Electrochemistry. Examples And Challenges, Michael A. Matthews
Faculty Publications
Electrochemical methods have been proposed for synthesis of organic compounds, including conversion of CO2. Such methods may provide a basis for environmentally friendly and sustainable methods for chemical production. Nevertheless, electrochemical syntheses are not widely utilized. Several examples of ongoing research are presented that illustrate both the opportunities as well as the challenges associated with the utilization of electrochemistry for green chemical manufacturing.

Economy And 'New Economy' In The United States And Germany, Phillip J. Bryson
Faculty Publications
The expression "New Economy" is used inconsistently. This Article review the driving forces of the US boom of the 1990s, examining the changes introduced in the period and before, focusing on the IT sector and new technologies. The "New Economy" is not just the new sectors, but changes in the overall economy emanating from them. These changes will not evaporate in an economic slowdown. Comparisons of the USA with Germany and Europe illustrate that the "New Economy" will also continue to develop there on the foundations already laid.

Controls On Floc Size In A Continental Shelf Bottom Boundary Layer, Paul S. Hill, George Voulgaris, John H. Trowbridge
Faculty Publications
Simultaneous in situ observations of floc size, waves, and currents in a continental shelf bottom boundary layer do not support generally accepted functional relationships between turbulence and floc size in the sea. In September and October 1996 and January 1997, two tripods were deployed in 70 m of water on the continental shelf south of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. On one a camera photographed particles in suspension 1.2 m above the bottom that had equivalent circular diameters larger than 250 um, and on the other, three horizontally displaced acoustic current meters measured flow velocity 0.35 m above the bottom. The …

The Dirty Model. Ii. Self-Consistent Treatment Of Dust Heating And Emission In A Three-Dimensional Radiative Transfer Code, K. A. Misselt, Karl D. Gordon, Geoffrey C. Clayton, M. J. Wolff
Faculty Publications
In this paper and a companion paper we present the DIRTY model, a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, self-consistently including dust heating and emission and accounting for the effects of the transient heating of small grains. The code is completely general: the density structure of the dust, the number and type of heating sources, and their geometric configurations can be specified arbitrarily within the model space. Source photons are tracked through the scattering and absorbing medium using Monte Carlo techniques, and the effects of multiple scattering are included. The dust-scattering, -absorbing, and -emitting properties are calculated from realistic dust models …

Social Influence On Paranormal Beliefs, Barry N. Markovsky, Shane R. Thye
Faculty Publications
In spite of strong public expressions of skepticism from the scientific community, polls show that more than nine out of ten American adults profess belief in paranormal phenomena. Some scientists view this as a social problem, directing much blame (but little research) at a variety of sources including lack of critical thinking skills, fads, need for transcendent experiences, failure of the educational system, and cultural cycles. Social impact theory provides an alternative focus: it views paranormal beliefs as a natural consequence of social influence processes in interpersonal settings. In this study, subjects in a laboratory experiment were informed that some …

Court Administration As A Tool For Judicial Reform, Christie S. Warren
Faculty Publications
This paper focuses on court administration as a component of judicial branch reform in the United States and other countries.
Over the past fifty years, state and federal court systems in the United States have undergone a process of significant change. At the beginning of the twentieth century, courts were largely dependent upon the executive branch of government for administrative support and were for the most part externally dominated, disorganized, and poorly managed. By the end of the century, they had undergone a process of administrative innovation and improvement that changed the way they were managed. In other countries, judicial …
