Non-Judicial Measures Of Legal Reaction In The Military Domain As A Contribution To The Discussion On The Values Of Military Law, Szymon Kulmaczewski Jun 2026

Non-Judicial Measures Of Legal Reaction In The Military Domain As A Contribution To The Discussion On The Values Of Military Law, Szymon Kulmaczewski

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The activity of the Armed Forces is a widespread phenomenon characteristic of the majority of United Nations (UN) member states. The specificity of their functions and associated tasks makes the Armed Forces a state institution possessing autonomous characteristics. This functional autonomy of the Armed Forces manifests itself particularly clearly within the sphere of institutionalized activities where processes generating legal effects are activated, and processes that require appropriate mechanisms of legal response. Identifying these mechanisms constitutes the foundation for understanding the axiology of military law and the military justice system, as well as the challenges they face in today’s world. This …

Del Miedo A La Ternura: Deconstrucción De Imaginarios Constitutivos De La Iag Para Imaginarla Como Una Tecnología Futura, Elizabeth Rodríguez Rendon

GDI.

Nanofluid Flooding As A Sufficient Alternative To Waterflooding For Incremental Oil Recovery From Carbonate Reservoirs, Sarmad Al-Anssari, Dhifaf Sadeq, Hassanain A. Hassan, Ahmed Hamid Al-Taie, Hasan Ali Abood, Mohammed Mahdi, Zain Ul Abedin Arain

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs is one of the critical challenges in the oil industry due to the strongly oil-wet nature, natural fractures, and the heterogeneity of carbonate rocks. Subsequently, waterflooding can only displace oil from large fractures, leaving the majority of oil trapped in the rock matrix. This work suggests that nanofluid flooding, as a predesigned flooding method, is an alternative to conventional waterflooding. Various concentrations of silica nanofluid at different nanoparticle concentrations were formulated and systematically investigated for their characteristics, stability at reservoir conditions, and their influence on wettability and oil recovery. Silica nanoparticles were sustainably synthesized from …

What To Expect When You’Re Expecting Passenger Rail: How Central Valley Communities Are Preparing For High-Speed Rail, Josephine K. Hazelton-Bpyle, Naomi Bick Jun 2026

What To Expect When You’Re Expecting Passenger Rail: How Central Valley Communities Are Preparing For High-Speed Rail, Josephine K. Hazelton-Bpyle, Naomi Bick

Mineta Transportation Institute

Approved by California voters in 2008, the California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) project is a planned 800-mile rail corridor across California aimed at delivering intercity passenger rail service to the state’s largest metropolitan areas. This was the first voter-approved high-speed rail project in the United States and remains one of its most contentious. The first phase of the project’s construction is currently underway in California’s Central Valley, including many communities that initially opposed CAHSR. While supporters champion increased connectivity and the provision of environmentally sustainable transportation alternatives, critics contend the project’s benefits will not outweigh its environmental costs and economic disruptions. …

African American Business Owners' Descriptions Of Experiences With Lending Practices, Wannika R. Muhammad Jun 2026

African American Business Owners' Descriptions Of Experiences With Lending Practices, Wannika R. Muhammad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Entrepreneurship has remained an influential and unfulfilled goal for African Americans from the 1800s until now. Due to barriers in lending practices, increased business retention rates for African American business owners still need to be achieved. The lack of credit and lending resources hinders business growth and retention. Although Black-owned firms contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, they remain classified as underutilized entities that benefit the least, without adequate access to financial services, such as banking and lending opportunities. This study’s participants consisted of 12–15 African American business owners in central Texas, through a qualitative descriptive exploration of their experiences …

Task Complexity Matters: An Empirical Study Of Reasoning In Llms For Sentiment Analysis, Donghao Huang, Zhaoxia Wang Jun 2026

Task Complexity Matters: An Empirical Study Of Reasoning In Llms For Sentiment Analysis, Donghao Huang, Zhaoxia Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large language models (LLMs) with reasoning capabilities have fueled a compelling narrative that reasoning universally improves performance across language tasks. We test this claim through a comprehensive evaluation of 504 configurations across seven model families—including adaptive, conditional, and reinforcement learning-based reasoning architectures—on sentiment analysis datasets of varying granularity (binary, five-class, and 27-class emotion). Our findings reveal that reasoning effectiveness is strongly task-dependent, challenging prevailing assumptions: (1) Reasoning shows task-complexity dependence—binary classification degrades up to -19.9 F1% points (pp), while 27-class emotion recognition gains up to  +16.0 pp; (2) Distilled reasoning variants underperform base models by 3–18 pp on simpler tasks, …

Cfalr: Collaborative Filtering-Augmented Large Language Model For Personalized Fashion Outfit Recommendation, Yujuan Ding, Junrong Liao, Yunshan Ma, Yi Bin, Wenqi Fan, Tat-Seng Chua, Qing Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Personalized outfit recommendation poses a significant challenge in e-commerce and social media platforms, requiring systems that balance user preferences with aesthetic compatibility. Collaborative filtering (CF) provides a traditional solution for this, but it struggles with data-sparse scenarios and complex user-item-outfit relationships. Meanwhile, existing template-based approaches are constrained by rigid pre-designed structures. To bridge these research gaps, we introduce CFALR (Collaborative Filtering-Augmented Large Language Model for Recommendation), a novel framework that synergizes collaborative filtering with large language models for personalized outfit recommendation. Specifically, CFALR describes user-outfit interactions in natural language and leverages LLMs to capture fashion semantics while employing CF-enhanced embeddings …

A Reproducible Hdr-Native Psychophysics Infrastructure For Color Science Research, Fernando Voltolini De Azambuja Jun 2026

A Reproducible Hdr-Native Psychophysics Infrastructure For Color Science Research, Fernando Voltolini De Azambuja

Theses

Color science psychophysics measures the human visual system by relating controlled visual stimuli to observer responses, often through forced-choice paradigms such as two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) (Kingdom and Prins 2016). These studies require stimuli specified in physically meaningful units, technically correct display emission, and reproducible execution (Fairchild 2013; Lin et al. 2023). In practice, graduate-level experiments often rely on bespoke MATLAB or Python scripts, standard dynamic range (SDR)-first toolchains such as Psychtoolbox and PsychoPy, manual stimulus duplication, and incomplete capture of calibration, colorimetric state, and display capability (Brainard 1997; Peirce et al. 2019). These limitations increase experimental friction and create …

Drone Urbanisms, Siew Ying Shee Jun 2026

Drone Urbanisms, Siew Ying Shee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Across contemporary cities, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) particularly drones have emerged as critical instruments for sensing, visualizing, and reconfiguring the built environment. Yet, urban space is not merely a passive backdrop for drone activity; it both shapes and is reshaped by them. The central question for understanding drone urbanism, then, is not only what drones do, but how their deployment redistributes the agency to see, know, and intervene across human operators, infrastructures, and algorithms. This renegotiation of visibility, authority, and knowledge takes shape through the ways drones mediate the governance and experiential textures of the city. Departing from the distant totalities …

Engineering Immunity? Biotechnical Governance And The Experimental Failures Of Project Wolbachia In Singapore, Siew Ying Shee, Orlando Woods, Sayd Randle Jun 2026

Engineering Immunity? Biotechnical Governance And The Experimental Failures Of Project Wolbachia In Singapore, Siew Ying Shee, Orlando Woods, Sayd Randle

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper introduces the idea of ‘experimental failure’ to critically interrogate the limits of engineering biological systems for urban governance. Whilst experimentation through projects related to smart cities and eco-cities has garnered significant attention, biotechnical experiments––which manipulate living organisms through technology––remain underexplored. Unlike interventions leveraging non-living, inanimate systems, engineering life must contend with ecological ‘unruliness’ and social uncertainties. These complexities often resist straightforward quantification and exceed conventional evaluation frameworks, demanding a rethinking of what constitutes ‘success’ and ‘failure’ in such interventions. Drawing on ethnographic research with public health officers, pest management professionals and residents in Singapore, we analyse the government-led …
