This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading The Arab Image Foundation And Its Collection, Dore Bowen
This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading The Arab Image Foundation And Its Collection, Dore Bowen
Faculty Publications
This essay examines the benefits and disadvantages of using imagination as a method of historical research in the archive. Employing Jean-Paul Sartre's notion of “image-consciousness” in The Psychology of Imagination, imagination is defined and explored as a form of perception based upon temporal absence or suspension. This method is then discussed in relation to the exhibition “Not Given: Talking of and Around Photographs of Arab Women” (2006), curated by the author with artist Isabelle Massu. The installation was assembled with the cooperation of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and traveled from Marseille (2005-06) to San Francisco (2007). The author …

Size and age structures of stand populations of numerous tree species exhibit uneven or reverse J-distributions that can persist after non-catastrophic disturbance, especially windstorms. Among disjunct populations of conspecific trees, alternative distributions are also possible and may be attributed to more localized variation in disturbance. Regional differences in structure and demography among disjunct populations of sand pine (Pinus clausa (Chapm. ex Engelm.) Vasey ex Sarg.) in the Florida panhandle and peninsula may result from variation in hurricane regimes associated with each of these populations. We measured size, age, and growth rates of trees from panhandle and peninsula populations and then …

Culture-Independent Identification Of Gut Bacteria In Fourth-Instar Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis Invicta Buren, Larvae, Albert H. Lee, Claudia Husseneder, Linda Hooper-Bùi
Faculty Publications
Red imported fire ants (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren, are medical, urban, and agricultural pests from South America. They are successful invaders due to their preference for disturbed habitats, high reproductive rates, and the ability to feed on a wide variety of food items (omnivorous). Fourth-instar larvae are used by the colony to digest solid food and then regurgitate it for consumption by workers and queens. Larvae are an ideal source of investigations of endosymbiotic bacteria possibly involved in nutrient distributions. Our study utilized 16S rDNA sequencing to describe the composition of the bacterial community in fourth-instar ant larvae in order …
Sexual Harassment Experiences And Harmful Alcohol Use In A Military Sample: Differences In Gender And The Mediating Role Of Depression, Jaimie L. Gradus, Amy E. Street, Kacie Kelly, Jane Stafford
Sexual Harassment Experiences And Harmful Alcohol Use In A Military Sample: Differences In Gender And The Mediating Role Of Depression, Jaimie L. Gradus, Amy E. Street, Kacie Kelly, Jane Stafford
Faculty Publications
The current investigation identified the genderspecific prevalence of sexual harassment and assault experienced during U.S. military service and the negative mental and physical health correlates of these experiences in a sample of former reservists. We surveyed a stratified random sample of 3,946 former reservists about their experiences during military service and their current health, including depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, somatic symptoms, and medical conditions. Prevalence estimates and confidence intervals of sexual harassment and assault were calculated. A series of logistic regressions identified associations with health symptoms and conditions. Both men and women had a substantial prevalence of military sexual harassment …

On The Steering Of Sound Energy Through A Supercritical Plate By A Near-Field Transducer Array, Brian E. Anderson, Stephen A. Hambric, Jack W. Hughes
Faculty Publications
The ability to direct sound energy through the flexural vibrations of a submerged plate at various angles of incidence using a near-field transducer array is investigated. An alumina bar is placed in front of a one-dimensional, eight-element transducer array, between the array and the water. Operating in a receive mode, data were taken as a function of angle of incidence and compared to data taken without the presence of the alumina bar. The array was also operated in transmit mode and results were compared to corresponding receive mode data, showing that reciprocity holds. Results show that in fact sound energy …
Optical Phase Unwrapping In The Presence Of Branch Points, Todd M. Venema, Jason D. Schmidt
Optical Phase Unwrapping In The Presence Of Branch Points, Todd M. Venema, Jason D. Schmidt
Faculty Publications
Strong turbulence causes phase discontinuities known as branch points in an optical field. These discontinuities complicate the phase unwrapping necessary to apply phase corrections onto a deformable mirror in an adaptive optics (AO) system. This paper proposes a non-optimal but effective and implementable phase unwrapping method for optical fields containing branch points. This method first applies a least-squares (LS) unwrapper to the field which isolates and unwraps the LS component of the field. Four modulo-2π-equivalent non-LS components are created by subtracting the LS component from the original field and then restricting the result to differing ranges. 2π phase jumps known …

Hypogenic Speleogenesis Within Seven Rivers Evaporites: Coffee Cave, Eddy County, New Mexico, Kevin W. Stafford, Lewis Land, Alexander Klimchouk
Faculty Publications
Coffee Cave, located in the lower Pecos region of southeastern New Mexico, illustrates processes of hypogenic speleogenesis in the middle Permian Seven Rivers Formation. Coffee Cave is a rectilinear gypsum maze cave with at least four stratigraphically-distinct horizons of development. Morphological features throughout the cave provide unequivocal evidence of hypogenic ascending speleogenesis in a confined aquifer system driven by mixed (forced and free) convection. Morphologic features in individual cave levels include a complete suite that defines original rising flow paths, ranging from inlets for hypogenic fluids (feeders) through transitional forms (rising wall channels) to ceiling half-tube flow features and fluid …
Seeing Inside The Mountains: Cynthia Rylant's Appalachian Literature And The "Hillbilly" Stereotype, Karen Roggenkamp
Seeing Inside The Mountains: Cynthia Rylant's Appalachian Literature And The "Hillbilly" Stereotype, Karen Roggenkamp
Faculty Publications
If Ob, as a West Virginia native, possesses the ability to see The Mysteries where others see only primitivistic whittling or, more pejoratively, tacky wooden trash cluttering the yards of mountain families, then Rylant's Appalachian works likewise depict characters who possess an ability to see beyond external markers and predictable interpretations, and who seek an emotional and spiritual interiority based on family, love, and sense of place. Rylant's words in The Relatives Came, When I Was Young in the Mountains, and Missing May work to restore the integrity of Appalachia as a place of "interior" values, a setting that symbolizes …

The purpose of this Article is to explain why we believe that rights of publicity should be taught as a stand-alone course, why we believe that a course in comparative rights of publicity is worthwhile as a stand-alone course, and to explain some of the challenges and opportunities that the course presents. Ultimately, we hope to encourage and persuade more of our colleagues at other schools to begin to offer rights of publicity as a separate course.

Faculty Publications
Capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is a major virulence factor in Vibrio vulnificus, and encapsulated strains have an opaque, smooth (OpS) colony morphology, while nonencapsulated strains have a translucent, smooth (TrS) colony morphology. Previously, we showed that OpS and TrS parental strains can yield a third colony type, rugose (R), and that the resulting strains, with the OpR and TrR phenotypes, respectively, form copious biofilms. Here we show that while OpR and TrR strains both produce three-dimensional biofilm structures that are indicative of rugose extracellular polysaccharide (rEPS) production, OpR strains also retain expression of CPS and are virulent in an iron-supplemented mouse …

The Sinorhizobium Meliloti Msba2 Protein Is Essential For The Legume Symbiosis, Sebastian Beck, Victoria L. Marlow, Katy Woodall, William T. Doerrler, Euan K. James, Gail P. Ferguson
Faculty Publications
Sinorhizobium meliloti is a beneficial legume symbiont, closely related to Brucella species, which are chronic mammalian pathogens. We discovered that the S. meliloti MsbA2 protein is essential to ensure the symbiotic interaction with the host plant, alfalfa. S. meliloti invades plant cells via plant-derived structures known as infection threads. However, in the absence of MsbA2, S. meliloti remains trapped within abnormally thickened infection threads and induces a heightened plant defence response, characterized by a substantial thickening of the nodule endodermis layer and the accumulation of polyphenolic compounds. The S. meliloti MsbA2 protein is homologous to the Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide/phospholipid trafficking …
An Appreciation Of Marc Galanter's Scholarship, John M. Lande
An Appreciation Of Marc Galanter's Scholarship, John M. Lande
Faculty Publications
This brief essay highlights three of Marc Galanter's works to illustrate qualities that seem especially worth emulating. Galanter's classic article, Why the “Haves” Come Out Ahead: Speculations on the Limits of Legal Change, focuses on how the legal system actually operates in daily life and challenges a conventional wisdom that simply providing have-nots with more lawyers would substantially reduce inequality. The article is particularly relevant to the dispute resolution field, focusing on the vast majority of legally-oriented behavior that occurs outside of court. It distinguishes truly private dispute resolution (such as self-help, withdrawal from relationships, and intra-group processes) from settlement …

This article explores whether exceptions from Asset-capitalization and rational tax depreciation rates are justified to reflect the realities of today's segmentation of the innovation market. The authors argue that the federal tax subsidy for innovation should not be limited to initial research, but should be expanded to cover desirable acquisitions in order to achieve optimal innovation outcomes and enhanced economic growth.
Transmission Through A Thick Periodic Slab, Karim Ramdani, Stephen Shipman
Transmission Through A Thick Periodic Slab, Karim Ramdani, Stephen Shipman
Faculty Publications
For the scalar wave equation in periodic structures, we establish rigorously the manifestation of a spectral bandgap as a frequency interval of exponentially small transmission of energy through a slab of the crystal when the thickness of the slab tends to infinity. We extend the result to slabs that contain a planar defect for frequencies that do not coincide with guided mode frequencies for the defect. For one-dimensional crystals, we prove that the transmission approaches a nonzero value at guided mode frequencies and give an explicit formula for the transmission. The main analytical tool in the multidimensional case is the …
Legal Theoretic Inadequacy And Obesity Epidemic Analysis, David Yosifon
Legal Theoretic Inadequacy And Obesity Epidemic Analysis, David Yosifon
Faculty Publications
This Article explores crucial analytic and normative limitations in presently dominant and ascendant approaches to legal theory. The approaches' failure to provide a satisfying framework for analyzing the obesity epidemic presently raging undeterred in American society reveals these limitations. Conventional law and economics scholars writing on the subject have deployed familiar frameworks to reach predictable conclusions that are neither intellectually nor morally justifiable. This Article argues that recent theoretical innovations promulgated within the burgeoning law and behavioralism movement have thus far provided no more reliable a framework for legal analysis of the obesity epidemic than has conventional law and economics. …

Introduction: Common Law Environmental Protection, Jonathan H. Adler, Andrew P. Morriss
Introduction: Common Law Environmental Protection, Jonathan H. Adler, Andrew P. Morriss
Faculty Publications
Today there is widespread dissatisfaction with many aspects of federal environmental law. The apparent success of early environmental regulations notwithstanding, many analysts and academics have begun to reexamine the potential of common law causes of action to supplement, if not supplant, portions of the existing regulatory regime. Some environmental advocates have come to the conclusion that state-based tort law may be more protective than federal regulations. At the same time, private litigators and state attorneys general are reviving common law causes of action in an effort to augment existing regulatory controls.
Is the common law a viable means of addressing …
An Informational Approach To The Mass Imprisonment Problem, Adam M. Gershowitz
An Informational Approach To The Mass Imprisonment Problem, Adam M. Gershowitz
Faculty Publications
The United States is plagued by the problem of mass imprisonment, with its prison population having risen by 500% in the last three decades. Because the overwhelming majority of criminal cases are resolved through plea bargaining, there is room for prosecutors to reduce mass imprisonment by exercising their wide discretion. At present, prosecutors likely do not give much consideration to the overcrowding of America 's jails and prisons when making their plea bargain offers. However, if prosecutors were regularly advised of such overcrowding they might offer marginally lower sentences across the board. For instance, a prosecutor who typically offers a …

Racial Bias In The Nba: Implications In Betting Markets, Tim Larsen, Joe Prince, Justin Wolfers
Faculty Publications
Recent studies have documented the existence of an own-race bias on the part of sports officials. In this paper we explore the implications of these biases on betting markets. We use data from the 1991/92 - 2004/05 NBA regular seasons to show that a betting strategy exploiting own-race biases by referees would systematically beat the spread.
Measuring The Relationship Between Organizational Transparency And Employee Trust, Brad R. Rawlins
Measuring The Relationship Between Organizational Transparency And Employee Trust, Brad R. Rawlins
Faculty Publications
The literature on transparency and trust suggest the two concepts are related. While this idea is logical on its face, would it hold true if measured? Using an instrument that measures both transparency and trust, analysis of employee opinion supports this notion. In particular, organizations that encourage and allow public participation, share substantial information so their publics can make informed decisions, give balanced reports that hold them accountable, and open themselves up to public scrutiny, are more likely to be trusted.

Synthesis And In Vitro Properties Of Trimethylamine- And Phosphonate-Substituted Carboranylporphyrins For Application In Bnct, Michael W. Easson, Frank R. Fronczek, Timothy J. Jensen, M. Graça H. Vicente
Faculty Publications
A series of carboranylporphyrins containing either amine or phosphonic acid functionalities and two to six closo-carborane clusters have been synthesized via a [2 + 2] condensation of a dimethylamino- or diethylphosphonate-substituted dipyrromethane with a dicarboranylmethyl-benzaldehyde. The X-ray structures of four key reaction intermediates (1, 2, 3, and 4a) and of two target porphyrins, the diphosphonate ester- and the diamino-tetracarboranylporphyrins 5b and 6a, are presented and discussed. In vitro studies using human carcinoma HEp2 and human glioblastoma T98G cells show that these porphyrins are non-toxic in the dark up to 100 μM concentrations, and that a tetracarboranylporphyrin bearing two quaternary ammonium …
A Natural Series For The Natural Logarithm, Oliver T. Dasbach
A Natural Series For The Natural Logarithm, Oliver T. Dasbach

Rodriguez Villegas expressed the Mahler measure of a polynomial in terms of an infinite series. Luck's combinatorial L2-torsion leads to similar series expressions for the Gromov norm of a knot complement. In this note we show that those formulae yield interesting power series expansions for the logarithm function. This generalizes an infinite series of Lehmer for the natural logarithm of 4.
Family Therapy And Childhood-Onset Schizophrenia: Pursuing Clinical And Bio/Psycho/Social Competence, Stanley D. Hall, Roy A. Bean
Family Therapy And Childhood-Onset Schizophrenia: Pursuing Clinical And Bio/Psycho/Social Competence, Stanley D. Hall, Roy A. Bean
Faculty Publications
Childhood-onset schizophrenia is perceived as more complicated because of its complexity, pervasive duration, and impact on individual and family functioning. Viewing the symptoms of childhood schizophrenia as creating a bio/psycho/social competence within which the therapist and family must interact may help contribute to treatment success. Competent family therapists working within this culture should be knowledgeable about the characteristics of childhood-onset schizophrenia, aware of their own biases towards psychosis, and skillful in its treatment. Guidelines are provided to help therapists identify their attitudes about schizophrenia and understand appropriate skills for treating the disorder.
Efficient Peer Assignment For Low-Latency Transmission Of Scalable Coded Images, Xiao Su, Tao Wang
Efficient Peer Assignment For Low-Latency Transmission Of Scalable Coded Images, Xiao Su, Tao Wang
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we propose efficient peer assignment algorithms for low-latency transmission of scalable coded images in peer-to-peer networks, in which peers may dynamically join and leave the networks. The objective of our algorithm is to minimize the transmission time of a requested image that is scalable coded. When an image is scalable coded in different bit rates, the bit stream encoded in a lower bit rate is a prefix subset of the one encoded in a higher bit rate. Therefore, a peer with the same requested image coded in any bit rate, even when it is different from the …
