Application Of A Fast Proton Dose Calculation Algorithm To A Thorax Geometry, Pablo P. Yepes, Travis Brannan, Jessie Huang, Dragan Mirkovic, Wayne D. Newhauser, Phillip J. Taddei, Uwe Titt

Faculty Publications

Treatment planning in proton therapy requires the calculation of absorbed dose distributions on beam shaping components and the patient anatomy. Analytical pencil-beam dose algorithms commonly used are not always accurate enough. The Monte Carlo approach is more accurate but extremely computationally intensive. The Fast Dose Calculator, a track-repeating algorithm, has been proposed as an alternative fast and accurate dose calculation. In this work FDC is applied to a proton therapy patient thoracic anatomy. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Correctors And Field Fluctuations For The Pie{Cyrillic, Ukrainian}(X)-Laplacian With Rough Exponents, Silvia Jimenez, Robert P. Lipton

Faculty Publications

We provide a corrector theory for the strong approximation of fields inside composites made from two materials with different power-law behavior. The correctors are used to develop bounds on the local singularity strength for gradient fields inside micro-structured media. The bounds are multi-scale in nature and can be used to measure the amplification of applied macroscopic fields by the micro-structure. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

A Monte Carlo Paradigm For Capillarity In Porous Media, Ning Lu, Benjamin D. Zeidman, Mark T. Lusk, Clinton S. Willson, David T. Wu

Faculty Publications

Wet porous media are ubiquitous in nature as soils, rocks, plants, and bones, and in engineering settings such as oil production, ground stability, filtration and composites. Their physical and chemical behavior is governed by the distribution of liquid and interfaces between phases. Characterization of the interfacial distribution is mostly based on macroscopic experiments, aided by empirical formulae. We present an alternative computational paradigm utilizing a Monte Carlo algorithm to simulate interfaces in complex realistic pore geometries. The method agrees with analytical solutions available only for idealized pore geometries, and is in quantitative agreement with Micro X-ray Computed Tomography (microXCT), capillary …

Bridging The Gap: Self-Directed Staff Technology Training, Quinn Galbraith, Kayla L. Quinney, Sara D. Smith Dec 2010

Bridging The Gap: Self-Directed Staff Technology Training, Quinn Galbraith, Kayla L. Quinney, Sara D. Smith

Faculty Publications

Undergraduates, as members of the Millennial Generation, are proficient in Web 2.0 technology and expect to apply these technologies to their coursework—including scholarly research. To remain relevant, academic libraries need to provide the technology that student patrons expect, and academic librarians need to learn and use these technologies themselves. Because leaders at the Harold B. Lee Library of Brigham Young University (HBLL) perceived a gap in technology use between students and their staff and faculty, they developed and implemented the Technology Challenge, a self-directed technology training program that rewarded employees for exploring technology daily. The purpose of this paper is …

The Short-Term Influence Of Free Digital Versions Of Books On Print Sales, John L. Hilton Iii, David Wiley

Faculty Publications

Increasingly, authors and publishers are freely distributing their books electronically to increase the visibility of their work. A vital question for those with a commercial stake in selling books is, “What happens to book sales if digital versions are given away?” We used BookScan sales data for four categories of books (a total of 41 books) for which we could identify the date when the free digital versions of the books were made available to determine whether the free version affected print sales. We analyzed the data on book sales for the eight weeks before and after the free versions …

Power Series For Waves In Micro-Resonator Arrays, Stephen P. Shipman

Faculty Publications

We obtain convergent power-series representations for Bloch waves and their complex dispersion relation in an infinite periodic array of micro-resonators, which exhibits artificial bulk magnetism. The small parameter η of expansion is the ratio of period to wavelength, and the high conductivity is inversely proportional to η. The coefficient fields are solutions to an infinite sequence of period-cell problems.1. © 2010 IEEE.

Systematic Approach To Electrostatically Induced 2d Crystallization Of Nanoparticles At Liquid Interfaces, Sumit Kewalramani, Suntao Wang, Yuan Lin, Huong Giang Nguyen, Qian Wang, Masafumi Fukuto, Lin Yang

Faculty Publications

We report an experimental demonstration of a strategy for inducing two-dimensional (2D)crystallization of charged nanoparticles on oppositely charged fluid interfaces. This strategy aims to maximize the interfacial adsorption of nanoparticles, and hence their lateral packing density, by utilizing a combination of weakly charged particles and a high surface charge density on the planar interface. In order to test this approach, we investigated the assembly of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) on positively charged lipid monolayers at the aqueous solution surface, by means of in situX-ray scattering measurements at the liquid–vapor interface. Theassembly was studied as a function of the solution …

We report a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross section for neutrinos scattering on mineral oil (CH 2) as a function of four-momentum transferred squared, Q2. It is obtained by measuring the kinematics of recoiling nucleons with kinetic energy greater than 50 MeV which are readily detected in MiniBooNE. This differential cross-section distribution is fit with fixed nucleon form factors apart from an axial mass MA that provides a best fit for MA=1. 39±0.11 GeV. Using the data from the charged-current neutrino interaction sample, a ratio of neutral-current to charged-current quasielastic cross sections as a function of Q2 …

"The People" Of The Second Amendment: Citizenship And The Right To Bear Arms, Pratheepan Gulasekaram Nov 2010

"The People" Of The Second Amendment: Citizenship And The Right To Bear Arms, Pratheepan Gulasekaram

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court's recent Second Amendment decision, District of Columbia v. Heller asserts that the Constitution's right to bear arms is an individual right to armed self-defense held by law-abiding “citizens.” This Article examines the implications of this description, concluding that the Second Amendment cannot concurrently be a right of armed self-defense and restricted to citizens. The Article proceeds in three parts. First, it analyzes the term "the people" as it has been interpreted in recent Court cases. The Article concludes that constitutional text and Supreme Court jurisprudence provide no sustainable basis to believe the Second Amendment is limited …

Immunomodulation With Il-4rα Antisense Oligonucleotide Prevents Respiratory Syncytial Virus-Mediated Pulmonary Disease, Michael J. Ripple, Dahui You, Srinivasa Honnegowda, Joseph D. Giaimo, Andrew B. Sewell, David M. Becnel, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes significant morbidity and mortality in infants worldwide. Severe RSV infections in infants cause bronchiolitis, wheeze, and/or cough and significantly increase the risk for developing asthma. RSV pathogenesis is thought to be due to a Th2-type immune response initiated in response to RSV infection, specifically in the infant. Using a neonatal mouse system as an appropriate model for human infants, we sought to determine whether local inhibition of IL-4Rα expression during primary RSV infection in the neonate would prevent Th2-skewed responses to secondary RSV infection and improve longterm pulmonary function. To reduce IL-4Rα expression, antisense oligonucleotides …

Public Administration: Local Government And Decentralization In Ghana, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako Oct 2010

Public Administration: Local Government And Decentralization In Ghana, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako

Faculty Publications

Public administration as an art is defined in the Ghanaian context regarding decentralization and public officials’ accountability. It examines decentralization, local elections and empowerment. While the paper advocates for regional and district level elections, it uses the literature to argue that local representatives are more accessible to their locals. It questions the current appointment practices by the central government, which has become more partisan than originally intended in the Local Government Act. To affirm the democratic environment of politics in Ghana, it calls for constitutional amendment regarding decentralization and local government elections.

Nonlocal Quantum Information In Bipartite Quantum Error Correction, Mark M. Wilde, David Fattal Oct 2010

Nonlocal Quantum Information In Bipartite Quantum Error Correction, Mark M. Wilde, David Fattal

Faculty Publications

We show how to convert an arbitrary stabilizer code into a bipartite quantum code. A bipartite quantum code is one that involves two senders and one receiver. The two senders exploit both nonlocal and local quantum resources to encode quantum information with local encoding circuits. They transmit their encoded quantum data to a single receiver who then decodes the transmitted quantum information. The nonlocal resources in a bipartite code are ebits and nonlocal information qubits, and the local resources are ancillas and local information qubits. The technique of bipartite quantum error correction is useful in both the quantum communication scenario …

Quantum Convolutional Coding With Shared Entanglement: General Structure, Mark M. Wilde, Todd A. Brun Oct 2010

Quantum Convolutional Coding With Shared Entanglement: General Structure, Mark M. Wilde, Todd A. Brun

Faculty Publications

We present a general theory of entanglement-assisted quantum convolutional coding. The codes have a convolutional or memory structure, they assume that the sender and receiver share noiseless entanglement prior to quantum communication, and they are not restricted to possess the Calderbank-Shor-Steane structure as in previous work. We provide two significant advances for quantum convolutional coding theory. We first show how to "expand" a given set of quantum convolutional generators. This expansion step acts as a preprocessor for a polynomial symplectic Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure that simplifies the commutation relations of the expanded generators to be the same as those of entangled …

In Memoriam: Gil Friedman, Harvey Starr

Faculty Publications

Gil Friedman, lecturer in political science at Tel Aviv University, passed away on July 16, 2009, at the age of 42 after a short bout with cancer. Much too young, and with so much promise, Gil's death was an unexpected shock to his relatives, friends, and colleagues. His loss is all the more tragic because those who knew Gil were struck by his seemingly boundless energy, his enormous intellectual curiosity, his constant stream of ideas, and his incredible work ethic—all fed by a seemingly insatiable desire to read everything (ever) written in the areas of his current interest.
