Dial 2004 Working Group Report On Acquisition Quality Control, William A. Barrett, Henry Baird, Frank Le Bourgeois, Xiaofan Lin, George Nagy, Steve Simske, Elisa H. Barney Smith
Faculty Publications
This report summarizes the discussions of the Working Group on Acquisition Quality at the International Workshop on Document Image Analysis for Libraries, Palo Alto, CA, 23-24 January 2004. Acquisition of the image is one of the most time intensive components of forming a digital library, and the quality of the acquisition will affect all later stages of the digital library project. The current state of the art in acquisition is analyzed. Problems and suggested improvements for image acquisition and storage formats and the special problems associated with acquisition from microfilm follows. A list of general suggestions was developed which was …
Separating Lines Of Text In Free-Form Handwritten Historical Documents, William A. Barrett, Douglas J. Kennard
Separating Lines Of Text In Free-Form Handwritten Historical Documents, William A. Barrett, Douglas J. Kennard
Faculty Publications
We present an approach to finding (and separating) lines of text in free-form handwritten historical document images. After preprocessing, our method uses the count of foreground/background transitions in a binarized image to determine areas of the document that are likely to be text lines. Alternatively, an Adaptive Local Connectivity Map (ALCM) found in the literature can be used for this step of the process. We then use a min-cut/max-flow graph cut algorithm to split up text areas that appear to encompass more than one line of text. After removing text lines containing relatively little text information (or merging them with …
Antagonisms, Mutualisms And Commensalisms Affect Outbreak Dynamics Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Richard W. Hofstetter, James T. Cronin, Kier D. Klepzig, John C. Moser, Matthew P. Ayres
Antagonisms, Mutualisms And Commensalisms Affect Outbreak Dynamics Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Richard W. Hofstetter, James T. Cronin, Kier D. Klepzig, John C. Moser, Matthew P. Ayres
Faculty Publications
Feedback from community interactions involving mutualisms are a rarely explored mechanism for generating complex population dynamics. We examined the effects of two linked mutualisms on the population dynamics of a beetle that exhibits outbreak dynamics. One mutualism involves an obligate association between the bark beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis and two mycangial fungi. The second mutualism involves Tarsonemus mites that are phoretic on D. frontalis ("commensal"), and a blue-staining fungus, Ophiostoma minus. The presence of O. minus reduces beetle larval survival ("antagonistic") by outcompeting beetle-mutualistic fungi within trees yet supports mite populations by acting as a nutritional mutualist. These linked interactions potentially …
Differential Recursion Relations For Laguerre Functions On Symmetric Cones, Michael Aristidou, Mark Davidson, Gestur Ólafsson
Differential Recursion Relations For Laguerre Functions On Symmetric Cones, Michael Aristidou, Mark Davidson, Gestur Ólafsson
Faculty Publications
Let Ω be a symmetric cone and V the corresponding simple Euclidean Jordan algebra. In our previous papers (some with G. Zhang) we considered the family of generalized Laguerre functions on Ω that generalize the classical Laguerre functions on ℝ+. This family forms an orthogonal basis for the subspace of L-invariant functions in L2 (Ω, dμν), where dμν is a certain measure on the cone and where L is the group of linear transformations on V that leave the cone Ω invariant and fix the identity in Ω. The space L2 (Ω, dμν) supports a highest weight representation of the …
Global Stabilization For Systems Evolving On Manifolds, M. Malisoff, M. Krichman, E. Sontag
Global Stabilization For Systems Evolving On Manifolds, M. Malisoff, M. Krichman, E. Sontag
Faculty Publications
We show that any globally asymptotically controllable system on any smooth manifold can be globally stabilized by a state feedback. Since we allow discontinuous feedbacks, we interpret the solutions of our systems in the "sample and hold" sense introduced by Clarke, Ledyaev, Sontag, and Subbotin (CLSS). We generalize their theorem which is the special case of our result for systems on Euclidean space. We apply our result to the input-to-state stabilization of systems on manifolds with respect to actuator errors, under small observation noise. © Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. 2006.
Unified Model Of Loop Quantum Gravity And Matter, Rodolfo Gambini, S. Jay Olson, Jorge Pullin
Unified Model Of Loop Quantum Gravity And Matter, Rodolfo Gambini, S. Jay Olson, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We reconsider the unified model of gravitation and Yang-Mills interactions proposed by Chakraborty and Peldán, in the light of recent formal developments in loop quantum gravity. In particular, we show that one can promote the Hamiltonian constraint of the unified model to a well defined anomaly-free quantum operator using the techniques introduced by Thiemann, at least for the Euclidean theory. The Lorentzian version of the model can be consistently constructed, but at the moment appears to yield a correct weak field theory only under restrictive assumptions, and its quantization appears problematic.

Let G be a finite group and a ∈G. Let a G ={g −1 a g | g ∈ G} be the conjugacy class of a in G. Assume that a G and b G are conjugacy classes of G with the property that C G (a)=C G (b). Then a G b G is a conjugacy class if and only if [a,G]=[b,G]=[ab,G] and [ab,G] is a normal subgroup of G.

Jamming Sensor Networks: Attack And Defense Strategies, Wenyuan Xu, Wade Trappe, Yanyong Zhang
Jamming Sensor Networks: Attack And Defense Strategies, Wenyuan Xu, Wade Trappe, Yanyong Zhang
Faculty Publications
Wireless sensor networks are built upon a shared medium that makes it easy for adversaries to conduct radio interference, or jamming, attacks that effectively cause a denial of service of either transmission or reception functionalities. These attacks can easily be accomplished by an adversary by either bypassing MAC-layer protocols or emitting a radio signal targeted at jamming a particular channel. In this article we survey different jamming attacks that may be employed against a sensor network. In order to cope with the problem of jamming, we discuss a two-phase strategy involving the diagnosis of the attack, followed by a suitable …

Forest Fire Monitoring Using Multiple Unmanned Air Vehicles, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Ryan S. Holt, Joseph W. Egbert, Justin M. Bradley, Clark N. Taylor
Faculty Publications
The ability to gather and process information on the condition of forest fires is essential to fighting the fires in a cost-effective, safe, and efficient manner. While high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are currently used for fire surveillance; they are an expensive and scarce resource. As a proposed alternative, low-altitude, short-endurance (LASE) UAVs offer lower costs, quicker response times, and high- resolution information. In recent years, advances in solid-state sensor and autopilot technology have made LASE UAVs a feasible alternative. This paper overviews a current research project conducted by Brigham Young University and NASA Ames. In the project, …
Relationship Between River Size And Nutrient Removal, Wilfred M. Wollheim, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Bruce J. Peterson, Sybil P. Seitzinger, Charles S. Hopkinson
Relationship Between River Size And Nutrient Removal, Wilfred M. Wollheim, Charles J. Vorosmarty, Bruce J. Peterson, Sybil P. Seitzinger, Charles S. Hopkinson
Faculty Publications
We present a conceptual approach for evaluating the biological and hydrological controls of nutrient removal in different sized rivers within an entire river network. We emphasize a per unit area biological parameter, the nutrient uptake velocity (νf), which is mathematically independent of river size in benthic dominated systems. Standardization of biological parameters from previous river network models to νf reveals the nature of river size dependant biological activity in these models. We explore how geomorphic, hydraulic, and biological factors control the distribution of nutrient removal in an idealized river network, finding that larger rivers within a basin potentially exert considerable …
Long-Term Volumetric Eruption Rates And Magma Budgets, Scott M. White, Joy A. Crisp, Frank J. Spera
Long-Term Volumetric Eruption Rates And Magma Budgets, Scott M. White, Joy A. Crisp, Frank J. Spera
Faculty Publications
A global compilation of 170 time-averaged volumetric volcanic output rates (Qe) is evaluated in terms of composition and petrotectonic setting to advance the understanding of long-term rates of magma generation and eruption on Earth. Repose periods between successive eruptions at a given site and intrusive:extrusive ratios were compiled for selected volcanic centers where long-term (>104 years) data were available. More silicic compositions, rhyolites and andesites, have a more limited range of eruption rates than basalts. Even when high Qe values contributed by flood basalts (9 ± 2 10[1]1 km3/yr) are removed, there is a trend in decreasing average Qe …

Contrasting Silicic Magma Series In Miocene-Pliocene Ash Deposits In The San Miguel De Allende Graben, Guanajuato, Mexico, Eric H. Christiansen, Bart J. Kowallis, Aaron J. Adams, Oscar Carranza-Castaneda, Wade E. Miller
Faculty Publications
The San Miguel de Allende graben, Guanajuato, Mexico, contains numerous rhyolitic volcanic ash beds. Electron microprobe and x-ray fluorescence analyses of glass shards from 14 localities, combined with mineralogic, stratigraphic, radiometric, and paleomagnetic data, allow us to correlate the ash beds (and the intervening sedimentary strata and fossils), understand the timing of volcanism, date the age of extension, and better understand the tectonic and volcanic evolution of central Mexico. Our analyses reveal that at least six separate eruptions of rhyolitic ash occurred during the Late Miocene and Pliocene (5-3 Ma) while the San Miguel Allende basin was subsiding. The fallout …

Cross-Shore Variation Of Wind-Driven Flows On The Inner Shelf In Long Bay, South Carolina, United States, Benjamin T. Gutierrez, George Voulgaris, Paul A. Work
Faculty Publications
The cross-shore structure of subtidal flows on the inner shelf (7 to 12 m water depth) of Long Bay, South Carolina, a concave-shaped bay, is examined through the analysis of nearly 80 days of near-bed (1.7–2.2 m above bottom) current observations acquired during the spring and fall of 2001. In the spring and under northeastward winds (upwelling favorable) a two-layered flow was observed at depths greater than 10 m, while closer to the shore the currents were aligned with the wind. The two-layered flow is attributed to the presence of stratification, which has been observed under similar conditions in the …

General Classification And Analysis Of Neutron Β-Decay Experiments, Vladimir Gudkov, G. L. Greene, J. R. Calarco
Faculty Publications
A general analysis of the sensitivities of neutron β-decay experiments to manifestations of possible interaction beyond the standard model is carried out. In a consistent fashion, we take into account all known radiative and recoil corrections arising in the standard model. This provides a description of angular correlations in neutron decay in terms of one parameter, which is accurate to the level of ~10-5. Based on this general expression, we present an analysis of the sensitivities to new physics for selected neutron decay experiments. We emphasize that the usual parametrization of experiments in terms of the tree-level coefficients …

Loop Cosmological Dynamics And Dualities With Randall-Sundrum Braneworlds, Parampreet Singh
Faculty Publications
The discrete quantum geometric effects play an important role in dynamical evolution in the loop quantum cosmology. These effects which are significant at the high energies lead to the quadratic energy density modifications to the Friedmann equation, as in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenarios but with a negative sign. We investigate the scalar field dynamics in this scenario and show the existence of a phase of superinflation independent of the inverse scale factor modifications as found earlier. In this regime the scalar field mimics the dynamics of a phantom field and vice versa. We also find various symmetries between the expanding …

CsoSCA (formerly CsoS3) is a bacterial carbonic anhydrase localized in the shell of a cellular microcompartment called the carboxysome, where it converts HCO-3 to CO2 for use in carbon fixation by ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO). CsoSCA lacks significant sequence similarity to any of the four known classes of carbonic anhydrase (α, β, γ, or δ), and so it was initially classified as belonging to a new class, ϵ. The crystal structure of CsoSCA from Halothiobacillus neapolitanus reveals that it is actually a representative member of a new subclass of β-carbonic anhydrases, distinguished by a lack of active site …
Anomalous Diffusion In Quantum Brownian Motion With Colored Noise, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell
Anomalous Diffusion In Quantum Brownian Motion With Colored Noise, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell
Faculty Publications
Anomalous diffusion is discussed in the context of quantum Brownian motion with colored noise. It is shown that earlier results follow simply and directly from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The limits on the long-time dependence of anomalous diffusion are shown to be a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics. The special case of an electron interacting with the radiation field is discussed in detail. We apply our results to wave-packet spreading. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

In this paper, we review the state of the art and major challenges in current efforts to incorporate biogeochemical functional groups into models that can be applied on basin-wide and global scales, with an emphasis on models that might ultimately be used to predict how biogeochemical cycles in the ocean will respond to global warming. We define the term "biogeochemical functional group" to refer to groups of organisms that mediate specific chemical reactions in the ocean. Thus, according to this definition, "functional groups" have no phylogenetic meaning-these are composed of many different species with common biogeochemical functions. Substantial progress has …

A Fractional Dispersion Model For Overland Solute Transport, Zhi Qiang Deng, João L.M.P. De Lima, M. Isabel P. De Lima, Vijay P. Singh
Faculty Publications
Using the kinematic-wave overland flow equation and a fractional dispersion-advection equation, a process-oriented, physically-based model is developed for overland solute transport. Two scenarios, one consisting of downslope and the other of upslope rainstorm movements, are considered for numerical computations. Under these conditions, the hydrograph displays a long-tailed distribution due to the variation in flow velocity in both time and distance. The solute transport exhibits a complex behavior. Pollutographs are characterized by a steep rising limb, with a peak, and a long, stretched receding limb; whereas the solute concentration distributions feature a rapid receding limb followed by a long stretched rising …

Learning Real-Time A* Path Planner For Unmanned Air Vehicle Target Sensing, Jason K. Howlett, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich
Faculty Publications
This paper presents a path planner for sensing closely-spaced targets from a fixed-wing unmanned air vehicle (UAV) having a specified sensor footprint. The planner is based on the learning real-time A* (LRTA*) search algorithm and produces dynamically feasible paths that accomplish the sensing objectives in the shortest possible distance. A tree of candidate paths that span the area of interest is created by assembling primitive turn and straight sections of a specified step size in a sequential fashion from the starting position of the UAV. An LRTA* search of the tree produces feasible paths any time during its execution and …

Compact Solid-State Laser Source For 1s-2s Spectroscopy In Atomic Hydrogen, Scott D. Bergeson, N. Kolachevsky, J. Alnis, T. W. Hansch
Faculty Publications
We demonstrate a compact solid-state laser source for high-resolution two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition in atomic hydrogen. The source emits up to 20 mW at 243 nm and consists of a 972 nm diode laser, a tapered amplifier, and two doubling stages. The diode laser is actively stabilized to a high-finesse cavity. We compare the new source to the stable 486 nm dye laser used in previous experiments and record 1S-2S spectra using both systems. With the solid-state laser system, we demonstrate a resolution of the hydrogen spectrometer of 6×10^11, which is promising for a number of high-precision measurements …

Finding The Radial Parallel Temperature Profile In A Non-Neutral Plasma Using Equilibrium Calculations On Experimental Data, Grant W. Hart, Bryan G. Peterson
Faculty Publications
In 1992, Eggleston et al. [D. L. Eggleston et al., Phys. Fluids B 4, 3432 (1992)] reported on a technique for measuring the radial temperature profile in a pure-electron plasma confined in a Malmberg-Penning trap by partially dumping the plasma onto a charge collector at the end of the trap. For short plasmas and short confining rings, the assumptions in their paper are violated and a more general calculation is needed. This paper presents a variation of the standard equilibrium calculation to find the temperature profile of a pure-electron plasma. Eggleston's shortcut "evaporation" temperature method is found to require a …

The tetra-anionic form of ATP (ATP4-) is known to induce monovalent and divalent ion fluxes in cells that express purinergic P2X 7 receptors and with sustained application of ATP it has been shown that dyes as large as 831 Da can permeate the cell membrane. The current study explores the kinetics of loading α,α-trehalose (342 Da) into ATP stimulated J774.A1 cells, which are known to express the purinergic P2X 7 receptor. Cells that were incubated at 37°C in a 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 225 mM trehalose and 5 mM ATP, were shown to load trehalose linearly over …

New higher-order homogenization results are employed in an inverse homogenization procedure to identify graded microstructures that provide desirable structural response while ensuring stress control near joints or junctions between structural elements. The methodology is illustrated for long cylindrical shafts reinforced with stiff cylindrical elastic fibres with generators parallel to the shaft. The local fibre geometry can change across the shaft cross-section. The methodology is implemented numerically for cross-sectional shapes that possesses reentrant corners typically seen in lap joints and junctions of struts. Graded locally layered microgeometries are identified that provide the required structural rigidity with respect to torsion loading while …

We provide a small-gain theorem for feedback interconnections of monotone input-output systems with multi-valued input-state characteristics. This extends a small-gain theorem of Angeli and Sontag for monotone systems with singleton-valued characteristics. We prove our theorem using Thieme's convergence theory for asymptotically autonomous systems. We also provide an illustrative example. © 2006 IEEE.
