The cross sections for charged and neutral current deep inelastic scattering in e + p collisions with a longitudinally polarised positron beam have been measured using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The results, based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 23.8 pb -1 at sqrt(s) = 318 GeV, are given for both e + p charged current and neutral current deep inelastic scattering for both positive and negative values of the longitudinal polarisation of the positron beam. Single differential cross sections are presented for the kinematic region Q 2 > 200 GeV 2. The measured cross sections are compared …

Faculty Publications

Experimental results on work W(epsilon), heat Q(epsilon) and stored energy U(epsilon) of deformation for glassy polymers such as linear PS, PC, PMMA, Polyimid, amorphous PET, thermotropic aromatic polyesters, Vectra T for example, crosslinked epoxy are presented. All the data was obtained by a deformation calorimetry technique. Loading and unloading of samples were performed at room temperature with strain rate epsilon = 10(-2) - 10(-4) sec(-1) under uniaxial compression up to engineering strains of epsilon(def) = 40-50%. During straining all polymers accumulate an excess of the latent energy U( e). Elastic fraction of the energy is released completely at sample unloading …

Will Lowering Estuarine Salinity Increase Gulf Of Mexico Oyster Landings?, R. Eugene Turner Jun 2006

Will Lowering Estuarine Salinity Increase Gulf Of Mexico Oyster Landings?, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Previous studies provide conflicting opinions on whether lower than average salinities in Gulf of Mexico (GOM) estuaries are likely to increase or decrease oyster harvests (Crassostrea virginica), which represented 69% and 54% of the United States oyster landings by weight, and dockside value, respectively, in 2003. The present study examined a 54-yr record (1950–2003) of oyster harvests and river discharge in five major estuaries in GOM states (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas). Oyster landings were inversely related to freshwater inflow. Peaks in landings, 21 of 23 in West Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas combined, were coincidental with …

Minimum Spanning Tree Pose Estimation, Parris K. Egbert, Kevin L. Steele Jun 2006

Minimum Spanning Tree Pose Estimation, Parris K. Egbert, Kevin L. Steele

Faculty Publications

The extrinsic camera parameters from video stream images can be accurately estimated by tracking features through the image sequence and using these features to compute parameter estimates. The poses for long video sequences have been estimated in this manner. However, the poses of large sets of still images cannot be estimated using the same strategy because wide-baseline correspondences are not as robust as narrow-baseline feature tracks. Moreover, video pose estimation requires a linear or hierarchically-linear ordering on the images to be calibrated, reducing the image matches to the neighboring video frames. We propose a novel generalization to the linear ordering …

The Professionalization Of Law Firm In-House Counsel, Elizabeth Chambliss Jun 2006

The Professionalization Of Law Firm In-House Counsel, Elizabeth Chambliss

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the structural evolution of the "firm counsel" position from a volunteer, part-time position filled by an existing partner to a specialized, often full-time position increasingly filled by career in-house counsel. Based on focus groups and interviews with firm counsel, as well as participant observation at meetings and conferences aimed at firm counsel, I examine how the professionalization of the firm counsel position affects: (1) the definition of the firm as the client; (2) the authority of firm counsel with partners; and (3) firm counsels' professional commitments and attitudes about ethical rules. I find that, from a regulatory …

Timelike Surfaces Of Constant Mean Curvature ±1 In Anti-De Sitter 3-Space H31), Sungwook Lee Jun 2006

Timelike Surfaces Of Constant Mean Curvature ±1 In Anti-De Sitter 3-Space H31), Sungwook Lee

Faculty Publications

It is shown that timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature ± in anti-de Sitter 3-space H3 1(−1) can be constructed from a pair of Lorentz holomorphic and Lorentz antiholomorphic null curves in PSL2R via Bryant type representation formulae. These Bryant type representation formulae are used to investigate an explicit one-to-one correspondence, the so-called Lawson–Guichard correspondence, between timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature ± 1 and timelike minimal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space E 3 1. The hyperbolic Gauß map of timelike surfaces in H3 1(−1), which is a close analogue of the classical …

Growth, Feeding And Reproduction Of The Catfish Eremophilus Mutisii (Pisces : Trichomycteridae), From Artificial Reservoirs In Colombia, Gabriel Pinilla, Maritza Abril, Esperanza González

Faculty Publications

The catfish, Eremophilus mutisii, was cultured under different densities in artificial rainfall reservoirs at Caldas, Boyaca, Colombia. At capture, the average total length of the animals was 10 cm and the weight ranged between 9 and 10 g. These fish were in initial stages of sexual development. After a year in the reservoirs, they had increased in length and weight as follows (densities in parentheses): 5.22 cm and 27.23 g (0.5 individuals/m(2))); 1.98 cm and 8.79 g (1 individual/m(2)), and 2.45 cm and 0.82 g (2 individuals/m(2)). They were at the early stages of sexual maturity, and their condition …

A Multidiscipline Approach To Mitigating The Insider Threat, Jonathan W. Butts, Robert F. Mills, Gilbert L. Peterson Jun 2006

A Multidiscipline Approach To Mitigating The Insider Threat, Jonathan W. Butts, Robert F. Mills, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Preventing and detecting the malicious insider is an inherently difficult problem that expands across many areas of expertise such as social, behavioral and technical disciplines. Unfortunately, current methodologies to combat the insider threat have had limited success primarily because techniques have focused on these areas in isolation. The technology community is searching for technical solutions such as anomaly detection systems, data mining and honeypots. The law enforcement and counterintelligence communities, however, have tended to focus on human behavioral characteristics to identify suspicious activities. These independent methods have limited effectiveness because of the unique dynamics associated with the insider threat. The …

Histogram Matching For Camera Pose Neighbor Selection, Parris K. Egbert, Bryan S. Morse, Kevin L. Steele Jun 2006

Histogram Matching For Camera Pose Neighbor Selection, Parris K. Egbert, Bryan S. Morse, Kevin L. Steele

Faculty Publications

A prerequisite to calibrated camera pose estimation is the construction of a camera neighborhood adjacency graph, a connected graph defining the pose neighbors of the camera set. Pose neighbors to a camera C are images containing sufficient overlap in image content with the image from C that they can be used to correctly estimate the pose of C using structure-from-motion techniques. In a video stream, the camera neighborhood adjacency graph is often a simple connected path; frame poses are only estimated relative to their immediate neighbors. We propose a novel method to build more complex camera adjacency graphs that are …

Numerical Simulations Of The Onset And Stability Of Dynamical Mass Transfer In Binaries, Mario C.R. D'Souza, Patrick M. Motl, Joel E. Tohline, Juhan Frank May 2006

Numerical Simulations Of The Onset And Stability Of Dynamical Mass Transfer In Binaries, Mario C.R. D'Souza, Patrick M. Motl, Joel E. Tohline, Juhan Frank

Faculty Publications

Hydrodynamical simulations of semidetached, polytropic binary stars are presented in an effort to study the onset and stability of dynamical mass transfer events. Initial, synchronously rotating equilibrium models are constructed using a self-consistent field technique and then evolved with an Eulerian hydrodynamics code in a fully self-consistent manner. We describe code improvements introduced over the past few years that permit us to follow dynamical mass transfer events through more than 30 orbits. Mass transfer evolutions are presented for two different initial configurations: a dynamically unstable binary with initial mass ratio (donor/accretor) q 0 = 1.3 that leads to a complete …

Short-Range Ordered Phase Of The Double-Exchange Model In Infinite Dimensions, Randy S. Fishman, Florentin Popescu, Gonzalo Alvarez, Thomas Maier, Juana Moreno

Faculty Publications

Using the dynamical mean-field theory, we have evaluated the magnetic instabilities and T=0 phase diagram of the double-exchange model on a Bethe lattice in infinite dimensions. In addition to ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) phases, we also study a class of disordered phases with magnetic short-range order (SRO). In the weak-coupling limit, a SRO phase has a higher transition temperature than the AF phase for all fillings p below 1 and can even have a higher transition temperature than the FM phase. At T=0 and for small Hund's coupling JH, a SRO state has lower energy than either the FM …

Fuzzy State Aggregation And Off-Policy Reinforcement Learning For Stochastic Environments, Dean C. Wardell, Gilbert L. Peterson May 2006

Fuzzy State Aggregation And Off-Policy Reinforcement Learning For Stochastic Environments, Dean C. Wardell, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Reinforcement learning is one of the more attractive machine learning technologies, due to its unsupervised learning structure and ability to continually learn even as the environment it is operating in changes. This ability to learn in an unsupervised manner in a changing environment is applicable in complex domains through the use of function approximation of the domain’s policy. The function approximation presented here is that of fuzzy state aggregation. This article presents the use of fuzzy state aggregation with the current policy hill climbing methods of Win or Lose Fast (WoLF) and policy-dynamics based WoLF (PD-WoLF), exceeding the learning rate …

Aversive Parenting In China: Associations With Child Physical And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Craig H. Hart, Chongming Yang, Joseph A. Olsen, Shenghua Jin

Faculty Publications

This study assessed the combined and differential contributions of Chinese mothers and fathers (in terms of spouse-reported physically coercive and psychologically controlling parenting) to the development of peerreported physical and relational aggression in their preschool-age children (mean age of 5 years). Results of the two-group (boys and girls) latent sum and difference structural equation model showed that combined parenting effects were slightly more prevalent than differential effects in predicting aggression. Furthermore, physical coercion was predictive of aggression in boys whereas psychological control was primarily associated with aggression in girls. Findings extend our understanding of relational aggression and the meaning of …

Tropical forests vary substantially in the densities of trees of different sizes and thus in above-ground biomass and carbon stores. However, these tree size distributions show fundamental similarities suggestive of underlying general principles. The theory of metabolic ecology predicts that tree abundances will scale as the -2 power of diameter. Demographic equilibrium theory explains tree abundances in terms of the scaling of growth and mortality. We use demographic equilibrium theory to derive analytic predictions for tree size distributions corresponding to different growth and mortality functions. We test both sets of predictions using data from 14 large-scale tropical forest plots encompassing …

Modelling Responses Of Pine Savannas To Climate Change And Large-Scale Disturbance, Brian Beckage, Louis J. Gross, William J. Platt May 2006

Modelling Responses Of Pine Savannas To Climate Change And Large-Scale Disturbance, Brian Beckage, Louis J. Gross, William J. Platt

Faculty Publications

Global warming can potentially influence ecological communities through altered disturbance regimes in addition to increased temperatures. We investigate the response of pine savannas in the southeastern United States to global warming using a simple Lotka-Volterra competition model together with predicted changes to fire and hurricane disturbance regimes with global climate change. In the southeastern United States, decreased frequency of both fires and hurricanes with global warming will shift pine savannas toward a forested state. A CO2 fertilization effect that increases the growth rate of tree populations will also push southeastern landscapes from open savannas towards closed forests. Transient dynamics associated …

Mechanisms Imposing The Vbeta Bias Of V14a Natural Killer T Cells And Consequences For Microbial Glycolipid Recognition, Paul B. Savage, Dasten G. Wei, Shane A. Curran, Luc Teyton, Albert Bendelac

Faculty Publications

Mouse and human natural killer T (NKT) cells recognize a restricted set of glycosphingolipids presented by CD1d molecules, including self iGb3 and microbial alpha-glycuronosylceramides. The importance of the canonical Valpha 14-Jalpha18 TCR alphachain for antigen recognition by NKT cells is well recognized, but the mechanisms underlying the Vbeta8, Vbeta7, and Vbeta2 bias in mouse have not been explored. To study the influences of thymic selection and the constraints of pairing with Valpha 14-Jalpha 18, we have created a population of mature T cells expressing Valpha 14-Jalpha 18 TCRalpha chain in CD1d-deficient mice and studied its recognition properties in vitro and …

Faculty Publications

To understand biotic responses to an Antarctic cooling trend diatom samples from glacial meltwater streams in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, the largest ice-free area in Antarctica. Diatoms are abundant in these streams, and 24 of 40 species have only been found in the Antarctic. The percentage of these Antarctic diatom species increased with decreasing annual stream flow and increasing harshness of the stream habitat. The species diversity of assemblages reached a maximum when the Antarctic species accounted for 40-60% of relative diatom abundance. Decreased solar radiation and air-temperatures reduce annual stream flow, raising the dominance of these Antarctic species to …

Global mean cloud feedbacks in ten atmosphere-only climate models are estimated in perturbed sea surface temperature (SST) experiments and the results compared to doubled CO2 experiments using mixed-layer ocean versions of these same models. The cloud feedbacks in any given model are generally not consistent: the sign of the net cloud radiative feedback may vary according to the experimental design. However, both sets of experiments indicate that the variation of the total climate feedback across the models depends primarily on the variation of the net cloud feedback. Changes in different cloud types show much greater consistency between the two experiments …

Solving Symmetric Matrix Word Equations Via Symmetric Space Machinery, Jimmie Lawson, Yongdo Lim Apr 2006

Solving Symmetric Matrix Word Equations Via Symmetric Space Machinery, Jimmie Lawson, Yongdo Lim

Faculty Publications

It has recently been proved by Hillar and Johnson [C.J. Hillar, C.R. Johnson, Symmetric word equations in two positive definite letters, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 132 (2004) 945-953] that every symmetric word equation in positive definite matrices has a positive definite solution (existence theorem). In this paper we partially solve the uniqueness conjecture via the symmetric space and non-positive curvature machinery existing in the open convex cone of positive definite matrices. Unique positive definite solutions are obtained in terms of geometric and weighted means and as fixed points of explicit strict contractions on the cone of positive definite matrices. © …

The loss of Fe due to oxidation or diffusion into the substrate can prevent the successful preparation of well-ordered, stoichiometric, FePt nanoparticles. In this work we report the composition changes during annealing observed for small (<10 nm) FePt nanoparticles on thermally grown SiO2 layers on Si wafer substrates. Additionally, we describe the use of a controlled reducing gas mixture, Ar+H2+H2O, to reduce the loss of Fe.

Axiomatic Multi-Transport Bargaining: A Quantitative Method For Dynamic Transport Selection In Heterogeneous Multi-Transport Wireless Environments, Qiuyi Duan, Michael A. Goodrich, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang

Faculty Publications

Transport selection mechanisms are designed to facilitate seamless connectivity in heterogeneous multi-transport environments, allowing access to the “best” available transport according to user requirements. Evaluating transport configurations dynamically according to the user’s preferences and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements is a challenging task. This paper describes a quantitative approach that applies the Utility Theorem and Nash’s Bargaining solution to heterogeneous wireless environments. The mathematical model presented generates and adjusts the transport preference list dynamically depending on the degree to which a transport satisfies user preferences and the application’s QoS requirements. We incorporate a negotiation engine using the Axiomatic Multi-Transport Bargaining …

Combinatorial Fusion Criteria For Real-Time Tracking, D. Frank Hsu, Damian M. Lyons, Jizhou Ai

Faculty Publications

We address the problem of automated video tracking of targets when targets undergo multiple mutual occlusions. Our approach is based on the idea that as targets are occluded, selection of feature subsets and combinations of those features are effective in identifying the target and improving tracking performance. We use Combinatorial Fusion Analysis to develop a metric to select which subset of features will produce the most accurate tracking. In particular we show that the combination of a pair of features A and B will improve the accuracy only if (a) A and B have relative high performance, and (b) A …
