(Excerpt)
Since the early 1960's when the struggle for women's rights gained renewed strength and hope from the civil rights movement, a number of federal laws have been enacted to protect the rights of women in employment. Among these laws are included Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended in 1972 (hereinafter referred to as Title VII) which prohibits employment discrimination based upon sex in addition to the grounds of race, color, religion and national origin; Executive Order 11375 which prohibits sex discrimination by employers holding federal contracts; and the Equal Pay Act of 1963 as …

Second Annual Report Of The Independent Evaluation Of The California Master Plan For Special Education Volume 1, Patricia Craig
Faculty Publications
This two-volume Second Annual Report presents the results of the data collection activities during the first year. The first volume is a nontechnical presentation of the research findings. We have tried to keep it as free of technical jargon as possible and have assumed that readers have some familiarity with the California Master Plan. Volume II is a technical appendix that discusses in detail the methodological aspects of the work. The purpose of this report is to describe concisely, informatively, and objectively the status of special education programs in districts, RLAs, and counties. Most of the information presented is based …

Constitutional Limits On State Regulatory And Protectionist Policies, Peter M. Gerhart

My theme throughout is this: Although the Supreme Court's sometimes timid review of state regulatory legislation may be explained by its continued allergic reaction to economic due process review, that timidity is often unwarranted because the Constitution does embody several principles that protect the free market from some forms of state intervention.

Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson
Selective Antagonism Of The Rate‐Decreasing Effect Of D‐Amphetamine By Chlorpromazine In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. When d‐amphetamine was administered alone, the overall response rate decreased and the percent errors increased with increasing doses. When a small dose of chlorpromazine, which was ineffective when given alone, was administered in combination with d‐amphetamine, the rate‐decreasing effect was antagonized. The antagonism was selective, however, in that the error‐increasing effect of d‐amprotamine was augmented by chlorpromazine. The nature of the joint effect of the two drugs thus …

Effects Of D‐Amphetamine And Cocaine On Strained Ratio Behavior In A Repeated‐Acquisition Task, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher
Faculty Publications
Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of four colors. When the fixed‐ratio requirement for food presentation was five completions of the chain, d‐amphetamine and cocaine disrupted the behavior. As the dose of each drug was increased, the overall response rate decreased, the overall accuracy was impaired (i.e., percent errors increased), and there was less within‐session error reduction (acquisition). In contrast, when the fixed‐ratio requirement was either 20 or 50 completions of the chain, certain doses of both drugs produced large increases in the overall response rate by eliminating the …

Effects Of D‐Amphetamine, Cocaine, And Phencyclidine On The Acquisition Of Response Sequences With And Without Stimulus Fading, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
In each of three components of a multiple schedule, monkeys were required to emit a different sequence of four responses in a predetermined order on four levers. Sequence completions produced food on a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout. One component of the multiple schedule was a repeated‐acquisition task where the four‐response sequence changed each session (learning). The second component of the multiple schedule was also a repeated‐acquisition task, but acquisition was supported through the use of a stimulus‐fading procedure (faded learning). In a third component of the multiple schedule, the sequence of responses remained the same from session …

A Survey Of Patterns Of Nonpharmacologic Care For Hypertensive Patients, Including Recommendations For Their Children, Ivan Soltero, Yi Tsong, Richard Cooper, Jeremiah Stamler, Rose Stamler, Dan Garside
Faculty Publications
To ascertain current approaches of physicians to nutritional-hygienic management of hypertensive patients and their children, a survey was done among a random sample of Chicago-area generalists, internists, and cardiologists. Thirteen items related to advice for patients; two for their children. Of 713 physicians holding M.D. degrees in the sample, 573 (80%) responded. For hypertensive patients, the great majority of physicians indicated that they advise weight loss, avoidance of salt use at table, no smoking, regular exercise, limitation of alcohol intake, and avoidance of stressful situations. Although 98% advised weight loss, a minority responded positively to reduction of carbohydrate and/or fat …

The Association Between Urinary Sodium Excretion And Blood Pressure In Children, R. Cooper, I. Soltero, K. Liu, D. Berkson, S. Levinson, J. Stamler
Faculty Publications
This study explored the association between sodium excretion and blood pressure (BP). A new method was used to minimize the measurement error introduced by the large intrinsic variability of 24-hour sodium excretion. The ratio of intra- to interindividual variation was used to estimate the number of measurements needed to characterize the individual. When seven consecutive 24-hour samples were collected from 73 children, ages 11-14 years, a significant correlation between mean individual sodium excretion and BP was demonstrated. The independent relationship persisted when controlling for height, weight, pulse, age, sex and race (p = 0.045), but was eliminated by simultaneously considering …

Federal Protection Of Unique Environmental Interests: Endangered And Threatened Species, Ronald H. Rosenberg
Federal Protection Of Unique Environmental Interests: Endangered And Threatened Species, Ronald H. Rosenberg
Faculty Publications
Endangered species protection has long been favored by many Americans, who watched regretfully as the numbers of American eagles, buffaloes and other species dwindled toward extinction. Only recently, however, has species protection become a matter of public controversy, subsumed in the more general "development v. environment" debate. In this Article, Professor Rosenberg surveys the federal government's role in species protection, with a special focus on the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Prompted by the much-publicized Supreme Court decision in the "snail darter case"--TVA v. Hill-Congress extensively amended the Act in 1978. After a detailed analysis of these amendments, Professor Rosenberg …

Water Use In Agriculture Now And For The Future, B. Gardner Delworth
Water Use In Agriculture Now And For The Future, B. Gardner Delworth
Faculty Publications
Water is the primary limiting factor in agriculture in the United States and the world. The western states have gained importance in agricultural production only through extensive use of irrigation from surface and groundwater sources. With the increase in population, these water supplies are facing new pressures for reallocation. Accurate scientific information concerning water availability, behavior, management, and value is essential in optimizing water allocation on farms, in agriculture, and among agriculture and the various other uses. This report is an overview of the physical, institutional, economic, and sociological aspects of the water issue from the standpoint of agriculture. It …

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Rat Albumin: Studies In Vitro And In Vivo, James F. Day, Robert W. Thornburg, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Incubation of rat serum with D-glucose in vitro resulted in nonenzymatic glucosylation of serum proteins. Analysis of freshly isolated rat albumin by ion exchange chromatography indicated that the glucosylated albumin accounts for 6.7.+-. 0.9% of total albumin in normal rat serum. Glucosylation of rat albumin in vitro was 1st order with respect to glucose and albumin concentrations and occurs primarily (> 90%) at intrachain lysine residues. Kinetic analysis and inhibition of glucosylation by aspirin suggest that 1 reactive lysine residue is the primary site of glucosylation. Less than 5% of the radioactivity from glucosyl-albumin was released as glucose or mannose …

Enhanced Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Human Serum Albumin In Diabetes Mellitus, C. Earl Guthrow, Mary Ann Morris, James F. Day, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes
Faculty Publications
Use of an ion exchange chromatographic method and a colorimetric method with thiobarbituric acid showed that levels of nonenzymatically glucosylated serum albumin were increased in patients with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus compared to controls. The two methods correlated well (r = 0.99) and clearly discriminated between normal and poorly controlled diabetic populations. The levels of glycosylated hemoglobin were also measured in both populations. Several patients apparently in good control based on glycosylated hemoglobin measurements were found to have increased levels of glycosylated albumin. Because albumin has a shorter circulating half-life than does the human erythrocyte, the plasma concentration of glucosylated …
