Glycation Of Amino Groups In Protein, Nancy G. Watkins, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes Sep 1985

Glycation Of Amino Groups In Protein, Nancy G. Watkins, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

Ribonuclease A has been used as a model protein for studying the specificity of glycation of amino groups in protein under physiological conditions (phosphate buffer, pH 7.4, 37 “C). Incubation of RNase with glucose led to an enhanced rate of inactivation of the enzyme relative to the rate of modification of lysine residues, suggesting preferential modification of active site lysine residues. Sites of glycation of RNase were identified by amino acid analysis of tryptic peptides isolated by reverse-phase high pressure liquid chromatography and phenylboronate affinity chromatography. Schiff base adducts were trapped with Na- BH&N and the a-amino group of Lys-1 …

Uses And Abuses Of Wastewater Injection Wells In Hawaii, F. L. Peterson, June Ann Oberdorfer Mar 1985

Uses And Abuses Of Wastewater Injection Wells In Hawaii, F. L. Peterson, June Ann Oberdorfer

Faculty Publications

During the past two decades in Hawaii, more than 500 injection wells for the disposal of domestic sewage wastewater have been constructed and operated. Thus far, contamination of potable groundwater supplies has not been a problem. Many of the injection wells, however, have not performed as designed, and aquifer clogging and reduced injection capacity have produced numerous well failures resulting in public health, legal, and financial problems. Factors most commonly responsible for the well problems have been unfavorable hydrogeology, underdesign of injection well capacity, poor effluent quality, and lack of injection well maintenance. Detailed study of clogging mechanisms in the …

Associations Of Resting Heart Rate With Concentrations Of Lipoprotein Subfractions In Sedentary Men, Paul T. Williams, William L. Haskell, Karen M. Vranizan, Steven N. Blair, Ronald M. Krauss, Robert Superko, John J. Albers, Barbara Frey-Hewitt, Peter D. Wood Mar 1985

Associations Of Resting Heart Rate With Concentrations Of Lipoprotein Subfractions In Sedentary Men, Paul T. Williams, William L. Haskell, Karen M. Vranizan, Steven N. Blair, Ronald M. Krauss, Robert Superko, John J. Albers, Barbara Frey-Hewitt, Peter D. Wood

Faculty Publications

In major prospective studies it has been reported that high heart rate at rest predicts the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) or cardiovascular disease (CVD) in men, but the mechanisms producing these relationships are unknown. Since lipoprotein levels contribute strongly to the risk of CHD and CVD, we examined the relationship of resting heart rate to plasma concentrations of high-density (HDL), low-density (LDL), and very low-density (VLDL) lipoproteins, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and A-II, and serum concentrations of lipoprotein subfractions in 81 men to determine if atherogenic lipoproteins could potentially induce the reported association of heart rate with development of …

Use Of Government Funding And Taxing Power To Regulate Schools, Carl H. Esbeck, Kline Capps

Faculty Publications

The past two decades in America have witnessed a resurgence of interest in religious-based schooling. Manifestations of this trend are evident in the increased number of primary and secondary students enrolled in religious schools and the rapidity with which new church-affiliated schools are being opened.

Toward A General Theory Of Church-State Relations And The First Amendment, Carl H. Esbeck Jan 1985

Toward A General Theory Of Church-State Relations And The First Amendment, Carl H. Esbeck

Faculty Publications

Although government intervention in religious affairs is a new and understandably worrisome experience for many American churches, history instructs us that the confrontation is not novel. We can find some comfort in the fact that this double wrestle of state with church and state with individual believers is a perennial match. After all, it has been nearly sixty years since a brutish measure in Oregon making parochial school education unlawful had to be sidelined by the United States Supreme Court in Pierce v. Society of Sisters.' Over forty-five years ago the Supreme Court decided Lovell v. City of Griffin, snuffing …

The Naked Public Square: Religion And Democracy In America , Carl H. Esbeck

Faculty Publications

A crisis of confidence in our institutions and talk about loss of life's purpose are everywhere. Sociologists describe the modern individual's sense of isolation, his so-called spiritual homelessness, his weakening sense of values, and his bewilderment in the face of seemingly impersonal forces before which he feels helpless and often victimized.

Anatomy Of The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Strain F Glycoprotein B Gene: Primary Sequence And Predicted Protein Structure Of The Wild Type And Of Monoclonal Antibody-Resistant Mutants, P. E. Pellett, K. G. Kousoulas, L. Pereira, B. Roizman Jan 1985

Anatomy Of The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Strain F Glycoprotein B Gene: Primary Sequence And Predicted Protein Structure Of The Wild Type And Of Monoclonal Antibody-Resistant Mutants, P. E. Pellett, K. G. Kousoulas, L. Pereira, B. Roizman

Faculty Publications

In this paper we report the nucleotide sequence and predicted amino acid sequence of glycoprotein B of herpes simplex virus 1 strain F and the amino acid substitution in the domains of the glycoprotein B gene of three mutants selected for resistance to monoclonal antibody H126-5 or H233 but not to both. Analyses of the amino acid sequence with respect to hydropathicity and secondary structure yielded a two-dimensional model of the protein. The model predicts an N-terminal, 29-amino-acid cleavable signal sequence, a 696-amino-acid hydrophilic surface domain containing six potential sites for N-linked glycosylation, a 69-amino-acid hydrophobic domain containing three segments …

Comparison Of Drug Effects On Fixed‐Ratio Performance And Chain Performance Maintained Under A Second‐Order Fixed‐Ratio Schedule, Peter J. Winsauer, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher Jan 1985

Comparison Of Drug Effects On Fixed‐Ratio Performance And Chain Performance Maintained Under A Second‐Order Fixed‐Ratio Schedule, Peter J. Winsauer, Donald M. Thompson, Joseph M. Moerschbaecher

Faculty Publications

In one component of a multiple schedule, pigeons were required to complete the same four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three identically lighted keys in the presence of four successively presented colors (chain performance). Food presentation occurred after five completions of the chain (i.e., after 20 correct responses). Errors, such as responding on the center or right key when the left was designated correct, produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. In the other component, responding on a single key (lighted white) was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio 20 schedule. In general, phencyclidine …

Justifying Unisex Insurance: Another Perspective, Robert H. Jerry Ii, Kyle B. Mansfield Jan 1985

Justifying Unisex Insurance: Another Perspective, Robert H. Jerry Ii, Kyle B. Mansfield

Faculty Publications

This Article contends that gender is an impermissible basis for calculating insurance premiums and payments. Although this Article agrees with the arguments of those who share this view, it offers a different justification for eliminating gender discrimination in insurance. Part I of this Article briefly reviews the status of existing restrictions on gender discrimination in insurance. Part II examines the issues involved in gender-based insurance rating from the perspective of both insurers and advocates of individual equality. Part III presents a new justification for unisex insurance.

Racial Differences In The Relation Of Birth Weight And Gestational Age To Neonatal Mortality, Greg R. Alexander, Mark E. Tompkins, Joan M. Altekruse, Carlton A. Hornung Jan 1985

Racial Differences In The Relation Of Birth Weight And Gestational Age To Neonatal Mortality, Greg R. Alexander, Mark E. Tompkins, Joan M. Altekruse, Carlton A. Hornung

Faculty Publications

Utilizing South Carolina live birth-infant death cohort files for the period 1975-80, this study examines the bivariate distribution of birth weight gestational age (BW-GA), intrauterine growth curves, and BW-GA specific neonatal mortality rates (NMRs) by race. Comparison of BW-GA distributions revealed an appreciable shift between racial subgroups. Nonwhites, on the average, were born 1 week earlier and 270 grams lighter in weight than whites. In addition to racial differences in rates of intrauterine growth, nonwhites experienced lower BW-GA NMRs than whites in BW-GA categories < 3,000 grams and < 38 weeks. However, the improved mortality experience of nonwhites at more immature BW-GA categories was not consistently present when different cause-specific NMRs were considered.

These persistent racial variations highlight continuing issues regarding both the use of a single norm for …

Academic Library Services: The Literature Of Innovation, Jo Bell Whitlatch, Judy Reynolds Jan 1985

Academic Library Services: The Literature Of Innovation, Jo Bell Whitlatch, Judy Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Innovation has the potential for increasing the effectiveness of information service. As a result of this interest in innovation, organizational theorists have begun to explore the effect of organizational design upon flexibility, creativity, and productivity of organizations. A review of existing literature, however, provides no comprehensive theory of organizational innovation. Research on organizational design and innovation in libraries could contribute to the systematic study of the impact of organization structure . Studies by Howard and Luquire indicate that traditional library organizations may inhibit change as well as the reexamination of values and service. Further study is needed to determine how …

Effects Of Water Quality And Water Quantity On Nutritional Status: Findings From A South Indian Community, James R. Hébert

Faculty Publications

Quantitative assessments of the relative effects on health of various aspects of water supply are virtually absent from the literature. Despite the lack of information, resources are being allocated throughout the developing world, for projects related to water and sanitation. The present study was designed specifically to overcome many of the methodological problems that other researchers have faced. Data were collected concerning the nutritional status of 627 children in three urban communities in South India. Information was also collected on water quality, water quantity, household sanitation, socioeconomic conditions, and housing. A statistical technique is presented that allows for controlling potential …

Comparison Of Haitian Children In A Nutrition Intervention Programme With Children In The Haitian National Nutrition Survey, G. G. Berggren, James R. Hébert, C. M. Waternaux

Faculty Publications

Weight-for-height and height-for-age data were compared for preschool-age Haitian children enrolled in a community health and nutrition intervention programme and children measured in the Haiti national nutrition survey of 1978. Cross-sections of the longitudinal data of the intervention programme corresponding to the season when the national survey was conducted (May to September) were chosen for the three years of available programme data (1969, 1970, 1971). Significantly less stunting was found in children in the 1970 and 1971 intervention group than in the children covered by the national survey. Tests of trend also showed that the height (or length) status of …

Oakland: The First Norwegian-American Seventh-Day Adventist Church In America, Lawrence W. Onsager

Faculty Publications

In December 1861, several Norwegian families, led by Andrew Olsen and Tarel Johnson, organized the first Norwegian-American Adventist church in Oakland Township, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Oakland Township is part of the Koshkonong Norwegian-American Settlement, which includes southeastern Dane County, southwestern Jefferson County, and northern Rock County, Wisconsin.

The Olsen, Johnson, Loe, and Serns families were from a rural district in Vest-Agder County, Norway. On March 20, 1850, Andrew Olsen, his half-brother, Halvor Olsen, Ole Hegland Serns, and their families left for the U. S. from Kristiansand, Norway.

In 1854, Soren Loe and Tarel Johnson moved to Oakland to be near …
