Evaluating Katrina: A Snapshot Of Renters’ Rights Following Disasters, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod, Olympia Duhart Jan 2007

Evaluating Katrina: A Snapshot Of Renters’ Rights Following Disasters, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod, Olympia Duhart

Faculty Publications

Hurricane Katrina destroyed the homes of many people living in parts of the Gulf Region. The storm displaced as many as 800,000 victims and it is still difficult for them to return home. Consequently, many homeowners have turned to renting because of the slow recovery process. Renters face added difficulties; they are often the last in line for government benefits and other assistance. There is much hostility towards the rights of renters, creating even more difficulties for them.

This article focuses on the difficulties evacuee renters faced in New Orleans following the disaster. This article discusses legislation and attempted legislation …

Missing The Link: The Importance Of Keeping Ecosystems Intact And What The Endangered Species Act Suggests We Do About It, Kalyani Robbins Jan 2007

Missing The Link: The Importance Of Keeping Ecosystems Intact And What The Endangered Species Act Suggests We Do About It, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications

The Endangered Species Act was created in response to a rapid decline in species biodiversity. Although Congress chose direct protection of individual species as its tool, protecting ecosystems (a necessary component of biodiversity) was clearly one of the goals for which that tool was to be used. A species can be abundant in some areas and declining in others, such that protecting the entire species does not make sense. Congress dealt with this issue by amending the Endangered Species Act in 1978 to allow for protection of “distinct population segments,” thereby allowing the population in decline to be protected in …

As a follow-up of previous work on the flame pyrolysis of biphenyl and pyrene, a more detailed analysis of the pyrolytic products has been done using additional NMR data obtained on the whole soot sample correlated with detailed high-resolution and GC mass spectrometry data on the solvent-extracted portion of the same samples. These latter data complement the earlier NMR data with details of the pre-sooting structures, referred to as “young soot”, in pyrolyzed biphenyl samples collected at 1365, 1410, and 1470 K and pyrene at 1410 and 1470 K. The data reveal the roles played by free-radical-assisted polymerization reactions as …

Psychometrically Equivalent Russian Speech Audiometry Materials By Male And Female Talkers, Shawn L. Nissen, Richard W. Harris, Melissa G. Pola, David L. Mcpherson, George A. Tavarkiladze, Dennis L. Eggett Jan 2007

Psychometrically Equivalent Russian Speech Audiometry Materials By Male And Female Talkers, Shawn L. Nissen, Richard W. Harris, Melissa G. Pola, David L. Mcpherson, George A. Tavarkiladze, Dennis L. Eggett

Faculty Publications

Despite the large number of individuals who speak Russian, only a limited number of high-quality speech audiometry materials are available in a standard dialect of Russian. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate speech audiometry materials that can be used to measure word recognition and SRT testing in quiet for native speakers of Russian. Familiar mono-syllabic and bisyllabic words were digitally recorded by male and female talkers of Russian and subsequently evaluated by native listeners. Using logistic regression, psychometric functions were then calculated for all words. Selected monosyllabic words were digitally adjusted to create word recognition …

Development Of Speech Reception Threshold Materials For Speakers Of Taiwan Mandarin, Shawn L. Nissen, Richard W. Harris, Katie B. Slade

Faculty Publications

The aim of this research was to develop, digitally record, evaluate, and equate speech audiometry materials that can be used to measure the speech reception threshold(SRT) in quiet for native speakers of Taiwan Mandarin. Familiar trisyllabic words were digitally recorded by male and female talkers of Taiwan Mandarin and subsequently evaluated by 20 native listeners with normal hearing at 14intensity levels (10 to 16 dB HL) in 2 dB increments. Using logistic regression, psychometric functions were calculated for all words. Twenty-eight words with comparatively steep psychometric functions were selected and digitally adjusted to match the mean subject pure-tone average (5.0 …

Lip Kinematics In Spasmodic Dysphonia Before And After Treatment With Botulinum Toxin, Christopher Dromey, Aubrey Reese, Susan Howey

Faculty Publications

In order to learn about articulatory behavior in adductor spasmodic dysphonia (SD), the lip movements of seven individuals with SD and three control speakers were recorded with strain gauges as they repeated 'Buy Bobby a puppy' in voiced and whispered conditions. Results included weaker bilabial coordination, qualitative differences in the shape of lip movement profiles, and an increased number of lip velocity peaks in the speakers with SD. These participants received percutaneous botulinum toxin injection to the thyroarytenoid muscle, and were then recorded again. The pre- vs. post-treatment data revealed that improved vocal activity was associated with fewer articulatory disturbances. …

Latter-Day Saint Marriage And Family Life In Modern America, David C. Dollahite Jan 2007

Latter-Day Saint Marriage And Family Life In Modern America, David C. Dollahite

Faculty Publications

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormon) is considered by its adherents to embody all the doctrines and authority that were present in the church that Christ established (Matthew 16:18-19) but that subsequently were lost through an apostasy that took hold after the original apostles were martyred. Latter-day Saints consider their faith to be a modern restoration of ancient truths and practices accomplished through modern revelation given by the Lord to modern prophets.

Conditional Discrimination And Reversal In Amnesia Subsequent To Hypoxic Brain Injury Or Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm Rupture, C. E. Myers, J. Deluca, Ramona O. Hopkins, M. A. Gluck Jan 2007

Conditional Discrimination And Reversal In Amnesia Subsequent To Hypoxic Brain Injury Or Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm Rupture, C. E. Myers, J. Deluca, Ramona O. Hopkins, M. A. Gluck

Faculty Publications

Human anterograde amnesia can develop following bilateral damage to the hippocampus and medial temporal lobes, as in hypoxic brain injury, or following damage to the basal forebrain, as following anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysm rupture. In both cases, the mnestic deficit may be similar when assessed by standard neuropsychological measures. However, animal and computational models suggest that there are qualitative differences in the pattern of impaired and spared memory abilities following damage to hippocampus versus basal forebrain. Here, we show such a dissociation in human amnesia using a single two-stage task, involving conditional discrimination and reversal. Consistent with a prior …

Empty Threats? How Egyptians' Self-Ontology Should Affect The Way We Read Many Texts, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2007

Empty Threats? How Egyptians' Self-Ontology Should Affect The Way We Read Many Texts, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

Egyptologists have typically divided texts into those that dealt with the divine and those that treated the mundane. This false dichotomy is not one that the Egyptians themselves would have imposed. They saw themselves as mortal beings that interacted with the divine realm and the afterlife. The texts they created reflect this understanding, and thus we are greatly hampered when we insist that the language of a decree, threat formula, or other texts, must refer to either the mundane or the supernatural, but not both. There is ample evidence that the Egyptians often intended specific wording to invoke multiple realms, …

A Survey Of Dating And Marriage At Byu, Bruce A. Chadwick, Mindy Judd, Richard J. Mcclendon, Lauren Smith, Brent L. Top Jan 2007

A Survey Of Dating And Marriage At Byu, Bruce A. Chadwick, Mindy Judd, Richard J. Mcclendon, Lauren Smith, Brent L. Top

Faculty Publications

A 2001 study of 1,000 young women attending four-year colleges and universities across the United States conducted by Norval Glenn and Elizabeth Marquardt found that “dating” has all but disappeared from American college campuses. Only half of the women reported they had been asked on six or more dates during their entire college career. In fact, one-third of the women had two or fewer dates during the same four years. Instead of dating, college students now “hang out” in mixed groups in a variety of settings including apartments, dormitory rooms, student centers, pizza parlors, coffee shops, and bars. From these …

The Effects Of Immediate And Delayed Feedback On Secondary Distance Learners, Duane C. Lemley, Richard Sudweeks, Scott L. Howell, R. Dwight Laws, Octavia Sawyer Jan 2007

The Effects Of Immediate And Delayed Feedback On Secondary Distance Learners, Duane C. Lemley, Richard Sudweeks, Scott L. Howell, R. Dwight Laws, Octavia Sawyer

Faculty Publications

This study explores the effects of immediate and delayed feedback for 2 noncohort groups of high school students enrolled in distance learning courses at Brigham Young University. One group received immediate feedback while the second group received delayed feedback. Those students receiving immediate feedback performed significantly better on final exams, but those who received delayed feedback completed courses in significantly less time. The findings promise to inform best practices for providing feedback to secondary students in a distance learning setting and also give cause for further research.

Faculty Publications

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with decreased hippocampal volume, but the relationship between trauma and brain morphology in the absence of PTSD is less clear. In this study, measures of brain integrity were determined by estimating gray and white matter regional brain volumes using structural magnetic resonance imaging in six patients with PTSD and in five controls with comparable trauma exposure but without clinical evidence of PTSD. The only statistically significant volume difference between groups was observed multivariately in the white matter of the right temporal lobe (superior temporal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, white-matter stem, middle temporal gyrus, …

Will Legislation To Encourage Premarital Education Strengthen Marriage And Reduce Divorce?, Alan J. Hawkins Jan 2007

Will Legislation To Encourage Premarital Education Strengthen Marriage And Reduce Divorce?, Alan J. Hawkins

Faculty Publications

Many legislators are wondering whether there is a constructive role that government can play to strengthen marriages and reduce divorces. A handful of states have passed legislation providing incentives for couples to participate in formal premarital education. The purpose of this article is to examine the research that can help answer the question whether legislation to promote premarital education can strengthen marriages and reduce the divorce rate. Of course, there are numerous legal and policy issues related to marriage and divorce being discussed these days. The focus of this article however, is only on one. In the end, I conclude …

Significant Stress And Real Rewards: The Ecological And Ambiguous Experiences Of Foster Parents, Jason B. Whiting Phd, Paul T. Huber Ma

Faculty Publications

To obtain an insider's perspective of the unique dynamics and needs of foster parents, surveys and interviews were conducted using human ecology and ambiguous loss as a guiding framework. The resulting qualitative and quantitative data show significant and distinctive stressors for foster parents. These include challenges with agency staff and procedures and ambiguous situations. However, these parents generally found meaning and satisfaction in service and coped with the help of informal and formal supports.

Turning The Hearts Of Fathers To Their Children: Why Religious Involvement Can Make A Difference, Loren Marks, David C. Dollahite Jan 2007

Turning The Hearts Of Fathers To Their Children: Why Religious Involvement Can Make A Difference, Loren Marks, David C. Dollahite

Faculty Publications

Charles Dickens, the English author and keen observer of human affairs, wrote of revolution-era France: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." In many ways, Dickens' dichotomy regarding "the best of times" and "the worst of times" captures the state of contemporary American fatherhood. Many fathers are more highly involved with their children than the fathers of past generations. Conversely, many other fathers are disconnected from or uninvolved with their children. For many of the fathers who are highly involved in their children's lives, their religious faith is a motivational influence.

Australian youth engage in behaviour that threatens their health and wellbeing. National surveys report that about a third of young Australians have tried an illicit drug. High rates of substance use and risky sexual behaviour among young Australians suggest that effective prevention efforts based on empirical evidence need to be expanded. Church-associated organisations are an untapped resource that could be used to improve the health and welfare of young people. We describe eight evidence-based elements to consider in designing strategies to prevent high-risk behaviour in young people.
