East Greenland Margin, H. C. Larsen, A. D. Saunders, P. Clift
Faculty Publications
Leg 152 represents the second in an eight-leg program, proposed by the NARM-DPG, to investigate rifted margins. Four legs will be devoted to each margin type, volcanic and nonvolcanic. Leg 152, selected as first priority by the North Atlantic Rifted Margin Detailed Planning Group (NARM-DPG), will be the first leg to address processes at volcanic rifted margins by drilling a transect of proposed sites at 63°N, southeast Greenland. The southeast Greenland transect is located approximately 550 km south of the original center of the Iceland hotspot in a region of apparent structural simplicity, with a well-understood, simple plate kinematic history. …

This paper explores the needs and benefits for using undergraduates as a resource at tourism University Centers. The purpose of undergraduate tourism programs varies, but programs strive to combine theory with application, and research plays a role in this process. Undergraduates stand to benefit from the managerial and decision-making skills they can learn through research. The number of university tourism research centers has increased worldwide. These centers often function on small budgets and have limited research centers, yet their services and clientele · base are increasing. This paper explores how some universities have involved undergraduates in university tourism research, focusing …

The Upholstered, Wood Household Furniture Industry In North America: A Spatial Equilibrium Analysis, Eric J. Todd, Steven H. Bullard
Faculty Publications
Upholstered, wood household furniture production has become an increasingly important part of total furniture production in the United States. From 1982 to 1987, employment in the upholstered furniture industry grew 16 percent, and in 1987, the industry's 82,100 employees represented about 30 percent of U.S. household furniture indush-y employment (USDC Bureau of the Census 1990). Over the same 5-year period, value added for the upholstered furniture industry increased by 52 percent to more than $2.6 billion.

Comparison Of Bovine Coronavirus (Bcv) Antigens: Monoclonal Antibodies To The Spike Glycoprotein Distinguish Between Vaccine And Wild-Type Strains, Khalid A. Hussain, Johannes Storz, Konstantin G. Kousoulas
Faculty Publications
Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against two major structural proteins of the cell-adapted Mebus strain of bovine coronavirus (BCV-L9) were produced and characterized. Seven MAbs reacted with the peplomeric glycoprotein, gp100/S, while three MAbs reacted with the nucleoprotein p53/N in Western blot analysis of BCV polypeptides. MAbs to gp100/S reacted with discontinuous epitopes of gp100/S in Westerns under mild but not under standard denaturing conditions. In contrast, MAbs to p53/N reacted in both types of Westerns, and those epitopes were thus continuous. MAbs to p53/N failed to neutralize BCV infectivity, while 4 MAbs to gp100/S neutralized BCV effectively. Cross reactivity of MAbs …

Estimates Of Census Underenumeration Based On Genealogies, John W. Adams, Alice Bee Kasakoff
Faculty Publications
We have been studying the migrations of the descendants of nine men who came to Massachusetts before 1650 and have compiled a computerized database that includes all the people born before 1860 in the patrilines. Thus we have what the nine genealogists who studied these families thought was close to a complete list of family members alive in 1850. Here we focus on our attempts to find these individuals on the 1850 federal census.

Relationships Between Wetland Fragmentation And Recent Hydrologic Changes In A Deltaic Coast, R. Eugene Turner, Yeleswarapu S. Rao
Relationships Between Wetland Fragmentation And Recent Hydrologic Changes In A Deltaic Coast, R. Eugene Turner, Yeleswarapu S. Rao
Faculty Publications
Patterns in coastal wetland loss in the northern Gulf of Mexico were examined using aerial imagery from 1955–56 and 1978. Five qualitative types of wetland changes are evident: (1) spoil bank-parallel pond formation, (2) pond formation with apparent random distribution for the smallest ponds, but very clumped distribution for larger ponds, (3) semi- or complete impoundment resulting in open water formation, (4) cutting off of stream channels upstream of where a spoil bank crosses a natural channel, and (5) erosion at the land-water interface. Only pondsinterval, and it is clear that wetland breakup, not erosion at the pond-lake edge, is …
The Geography Of Home Furnishings Sales In The U.S., Steven H. Bullard
The Geography Of Home Furnishings Sales In The U.S., Steven H. Bullard
Faculty Publications
Sales by U.S. "furniture and home furnishings" stores were nearly $75 billion in 1987, the year of the most recent Census of Retail Trade. The sales total includes $26 billion for "furniture" stores, $16 billion for "homefurnishings" stores, $8 billion for "household appliance" stores, and $24 billion for "radio, television, computer, and music" stores.
The 1987 Census of Retail Trade reports sales for the combined category, furniture and home furnishings, for all U.S. states, counties, and metropolitan areas. In this article, therefore, the term "furniture and home furnishings" refers to combined sales for all of the store types in Table …

On Redrawing Circuit Boundaries — Why The Proposal To Divide The United States Court Of Appeals For The Ninth Circuit Is Not Such A Good Idea, Thomas E. Baker
On Redrawing Circuit Boundaries — Why The Proposal To Divide The United States Court Of Appeals For The Ninth Circuit Is Not Such A Good Idea, Thomas E. Baker
Faculty Publications
The current U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit covers Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Nearly 46 million people live within its boundaries. As a result, the 9th Circuit has the largest caseload and takes the most time of any federal circuit court to dispose of cases. Despite all of this, Professor Baker lays out his argument for why dividing the 9th Circuit is wrong-headed. He starts by giving a detailed history of U.S. circuit courts, including the recent experience of splitting the 5th Circuit. He then takes on …

The Order Of Santo Stefano In The Levant: An Unpublished Account Of A Voyage In 1627, Ilona Klein, Christopher Kleinhenz
Faculty Publications
On 12 April 1627 a fleet of six galleys belonging to the Order of Santo Stefano set sail from Livorno on their expedition "contro il comune nemico"–the Turks. This journey would take them along the western and southern coast of Italy, through the Ionian Sea to the Peloponnese and across the Aegean Sea to the Dardanelles. Along the way the sailors encountered many vessels, both friend and foe, heard reports of sea battles and movements of ships in those waters, and listened to an account of a miracle wrought by the Virgin Mary. After having engaged in two fierce skirmishes …

The U.S. Household Furniture Industry: Adapting To Changing Times., Brian A. Doherty, Steven H. Bullard
Faculty Publications
The U.S. wood household furniture industry has adapted to change in many ways in recent years. The industry has grown steadily since the 1982 recession, and has been shifting to the U.S . South and Southeast. Although California has also become prominent in furniture production, many recent factors indicate geographic shifts away from the state, particularly in wood furniture production. The household furniture industry has also adapted and continues to adapt to factors which have increased the globalization of trade in all products. Foreign competition has resulted in mergers and consolidation in the U.S. household furniture industry, and has also …
Modeling Wetland Loss In Coastal Louisiana: Geology, Geography, And Human Modifications, James H. Cowan Jr., R. Eugene Turner
Modeling Wetland Loss In Coastal Louisiana: Geology, Geography, And Human Modifications, James H. Cowan Jr., R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Habitat change in coastal Louisiana from 1955/6 to 1978 was analyzed to determine the influence of geological and man-made changes on landscape patterns within 7.5 min quadrangle maps. Three quantitative analyses were used: principal components analysis, multiple regression analysis, and cluster analysis.
Regional differences in land loss rates reflect variations in geology and the deltaic growth/decay cycles, man-induced changes in hydrology (principally canal dredging and spoil banking), and land-use changes (principally urbanization and agricultural expansion). The coastal zone is not homogeneous with respect to these variables and the interaction between causal factors leading to wetland loss is therefore locally variable …
