Proposed Thermodynamic Pressure Scale For An Absolute High-Pressure Calibration, Daniel L. Decker, J. Dean Barnett Feb 1970

Proposed Thermodynamic Pressure Scale For An Absolute High-Pressure Calibration, Daniel L. Decker, J. Dean Barnett

Faculty Publications

The field of high pressure has developed rapidly over the past few years to a point where relatively sophisticated experiments are being attempted. In many experiments it is no longer sufficient to qualitatively estimate the pressure or to base conclusions on experimental results tied to an empirical pressure parameter. One desires to accurately know the pressure dependence of physical quantities related to a true thermodynamic scale.

The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf Jan 1970

The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf

Faculty Publications

Several alpine valley systems in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana and Wyoming, have been examined using techniques similar to methods of stream system analysis. The general equation y = a x**b is the most adequate mathematical model for the cross valley profile; b values range between 1.5 and 2.0, indicating a parabolic form. As intensity of erosion increases in the glacial valley system, the b value also increases, indicating relatively deeper and narrower valley cross sections. The law of stream numbers, the law of stream lengths, and the bifurcation ratio, derived from fluvial geomorphology, are also applicable in glacial geomorphology.

Electrochemical Reduction Of Chromate In The Presence Of Nickel Chloride In Molten Lithium Chloride-Potassium Chloride Eutectic, Branko N. Popov, H. A. Laitinen Jan 1970

Electrochemical Reduction Of Chromate In The Presence Of Nickel Chloride In Molten Lithium Chloride-Potassium Chloride Eutectic, Branko N. Popov, H. A. Laitinen

Faculty Publications

Chronopotentiometry of chromate in the presence of NiCl2 in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic reveals a diffusion controlled, three electron reduction step. In the presence of excess NiCl2, chromate is reduced at −0.35V vs. Pt(II)/Pt reference electrode and the electroactive species responsible for the chrono-potentiometric wave is estimated to have a diffusion coefficient of 1.06 · 10−5 cm2 sec−1 at 450°C. The stoichiometry of the reduction product depends mainly on the temperature at which the deposit is formed. At 500°C the deposit approaches the composition LiNi2CrO4. X-ray powder diffraction shows the deposit …

Instruction In College Freshman Composition. Final Report., Ross M. Jewell, John Cowley, Gerald Bisbey

Faculty Publications

The research attempted to determine whether or not there was any difference between the scores of two groups of juniors; both of which had no freshman composition instruction; but one of which (Group 1) had composition instruction in the junior year and the other (Group 2) had not. Three measures; COOP; CEEB; and a theme; were administered at the end of the sophomore year and again at the time when Group 1 completed the course. Comparisons were made between scores of the two groups; of the males of each group; and of the females of each group. Results are: (1) …

A Theoretical Framework For Analyzing Residence Shifts Of Farm Families, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1970

A Theoretical Framework For Analyzing Residence Shifts Of Farm Families, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

The ever-changing composition of the American rural population is an established fact and has been the subject of much research. Urban families are moving o the ''country" to escape the noise and congestion of the city, While the migration of people from the farm to urban centers continues . The net result is a decrease in rural population relative to that classified as urban, although in absolute terms the rural population is increasing also. In 1969 less than 30 per cent of all American were classed as rural residents compared to 60 percent in 1900 and 95 percent in 1790.

Perceived Parent-Child Interaction And Boys Self-Esteem In Two Cultural Contexts, Viktor Gecas, Darwin L. Thomas, Andrew Weigert

Faculty Publications

The problem under consideration in the present paper deals with the relationship between parent-child interaction patterns and the child's self esteem. The relationship between these variables will be examined in the context of samples drawn from two societies: Saint Paul, Minnesota and San Juan, Puerto Rico.1 It is hoped that a cross-cultural investigation of the effects of parent-child interaction on the child's self esteem will enable us to make a more precise statement about the nature of this relationship.2

Quasilattice Interpretation Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Mixing Of Binary Alkali-Metal Systems, J. Bevan Ott, J. Rex Goates Nov 1969

Quasilattice Interpretation Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Mixing Of Binary Alkali-Metal Systems, J. Bevan Ott, J. Rex Goates

Faculty Publications

Quasilattice theory was applied to heats of mixing in the six systems formed from the binary combinations of Na, K, Rb, and Cs. The alkali-metal systems are particularly well suited for a critical test of the quasi-crystalline assumption since the theoretical model for these systems is relatively simple and the thermodynamic data are fairly complex. Very good fits of the heat-of-mixing data were achieved by assuming that the larger atom in the binary system covered multiple sites on the quasilattice. The values of the empirically determined constants appear to fit the physical significance accorded to them by the quasilattice model. …

Hormonal Regulation Of Lipolysis And Phosphorylase Activity In Human Fat Cells, Jay Moskowitz, John N. Fain May 1969

Hormonal Regulation Of Lipolysis And Phosphorylase Activity In Human Fat Cells, Jay Moskowitz, John N. Fain

Faculty Publications

A B S TR A C T Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) at a concentration of 1 ng/ml antagonized theophylline, and norepinephrine induced release of glycerol and free fatty acids (FFA) in human fat cell preparations. Insulin at higher doses also inhibited theophylline-stimulated lipolysis. The N6-2-O'dibutyryl derivative of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (DCAMP) stimulated lipolysis. Prostaglandin E1 did not significantly inhibit the lipid mobilizing effects of DCAMP. Changes in glycogen phosphorylase activity after treatment with theophylline, norepinephrine, DCAMP, and PGE1 paralleled those of lipolysis. These results suggest that in man as in experimental animals lipolysis …

Ehv Ac Parallel Transmission Line Calculations With Application To The Near Resonance Problem, A. Norton Chaston May 1969

Ehv Ac Parallel Transmission Line Calculations With Application To The Near Resonance Problem, A. Norton Chaston

Faculty Publications

The use of shunt reactors with EHV transmission lines has introduced new problems, one of which is induction of high voltages on a de-energized circuit of two parallel lines. This paper presents the matrix equations used in developing a digital computer program which takes into account the effects of electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, distributed lines, and transposition. The computer program may also be used to calculate the effects of shunt reactors, series capacitors, and loads. The equations can be adapted to a wide range of applications, although the examples for this paper have been limited to the near resonance problem …

A Critical Guide To Marbury V. Madison, William W. Van Alstyne Jan 1969

A Critical Guide To Marbury V. Madison, William W. Van Alstyne

Faculty Publications

The concept of judicial review of the constitutionality of state and federal statutes by the Supreme Court is generally rested upon the epic decision in Marbury v. Madison. The controversies which have surrounded the exercise of this power by the Supreme Court require a periodic reexamination of the concept of judicial review at its source, the Marbury opinion. This article proceeds by examining the historical context in which the case arose and analyzes the opinion in terms of various alternative approaches which might have been utilized by Chief Justice Marshall. The specific holding of the case is isolated in contrast …

Religiosity In 5-D: A Critical Note, Darwin L. Thomas, Andrew J. Weigert Jan 1969

Religiosity In 5-D: A Critical Note, Darwin L. Thomas, Andrew J. Weigert

Faculty Publications

The equivocation which may result from violation of natural language or face I validity is manifested in an article by Faulkner and DeJong (1966), "Religiosity in 5-D: An Empirical Analysis." The authors (1966:246-247) claim to be measuring and testing the associations among Glock's (1962) five dimensions of religiosity. They adequately refer to his dimensions as "experiential (feeling, emotion), ritualistic (religious behavior, i.e., church attendance), ideological (beliefs), intellectual (knowledge), and consequential (the effects in the secular world of the prior four dimensions)." The empirical "definition" of the dimensions, however, is given by the items used to measure them. It cannot be …

New Solutions Of The Einstein-Maxwell Equations From Old, B. Kent Harrison Nov 1968

New Solutions Of The Einstein-Maxwell Equations From Old, B. Kent Harrison

Faculty Publications

Methods are discussed with which one may derive theorems which allow one to generate new solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations from old ones. The old solutions used to generate new ones must admit at least one nonnull Killing vector and may be required to satisfy other conditions, depending on the theorem derived. Examples of derivable theorems are shown; these theorems are used in turn to show how generation of new solutions is accomplished. Examples of the latter are shown, such as generation of Brill or electrified NUT space from the Schwarzschild solution, generation of a new twisted Melvin universe from …

A Method For Measuring Magnetization To High Pressures, C. R. Johansen, Mark H. Nelson, J. H. Gardner Mar 1968

A Method For Measuring Magnetization To High Pressures, C. R. Johansen, Mark H. Nelson, J. H. Gardner

Faculty Publications

A partially successful attempt has been made to measure the magnetic moment per unit volume of ferromagnetic materials as a function of pressure to the 100-kbar region. The apparatus, an early version of which has been described previously, consists basically of two opposed Bridgman flat anvils of alumina. One anvil also acts as a dielectric-filled microwave resonant cavity for an x-band spectrometer, allowing electron spin resonance studies to be made to high pressure. The sample to be studied is placed in contact with the anvil-cavity and covered with a pressure-transmitting medium which in turn is encircled by a flat pyrophyllite …
