Mathematical Modeling Of Cathodic Protection Using The Boundary Element Method With A Nonlinear Polarization Curve, J. F. Fan, S. N. R Pakalapati, T. V. Nguyen, Ralph E. White, R. B. Griffin
Mathematical Modeling Of Cathodic Protection Using The Boundary Element Method With A Nonlinear Polarization Curve, J. F. Fan, S. N. R Pakalapati, T. V. Nguyen, Ralph E. White, R. B. Griffin
Faculty Publications
The distributions of potential and current density around a cathodically protected pipeline in seawater were determined using the boundary element technique. A nonlinear polarization curve for a low carbon steel in artificial sea water was obtained from dc-potentiodynamic measurements and was fitted for use as the boundary condition on the pipe. The program was used to evaluate cases in which one or two aluminum sacrificial anodes are used to protect a low carbon steelpipe in seawater. The results show that the number of anodes, the sizes of the anodes, and the distance between the anodes and the cathode are of …

Hydrogen Diffusion, Solubility, And Water Uptake In Dow's Short-Side-Chain Perfluorocarbon Membranes, Yu-Min Tsou, M. C. Kimble, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
Hydrogen gas diffusion coefficients and solubilities as well as water uptake values are reported for Dow's short-side-chain perfluoro-sulfonic and -carboxylic membranes of different equivalent weight (EW). The diffusion coefficients and solubilities were determined with an electrochemical test cell. Hydrogen solubility decreases with increasing EW in the lower EW range and tends to level off at higher EWs for both types of membranes. Both hydrogen solubility and diffusion coefficients of a sulfonic membrane with EW higher than 800 are higher than the corresponding values of a carboxylic membrane of similar EW. An unusual maximum is observed in the diffusion coefficient-EW plot …
Calorimetric Determination Of The Thermoneutral Potential Of Li/Bcx And Li/Socl2 Cells, E. E. Kalu, Ralph E. White, E. C. Darcy
Calorimetric Determination Of The Thermoneutral Potential Of Li/Bcx And Li/Socl2 Cells, E. E. Kalu, Ralph E. White, E. C. Darcy
Faculty Publications
Through a continuous recording of the cell voltage, heat flow, and current, the effective thermoneutral potential, Eetpof Li/BCX and Li/SOCl2 cells were determined in the temperature range, 0–60°C. The depth of discharge (DOD), temperature (T), and cell type (cell chemistry) affect the effective thermoneutral potential. The effective thermoneutral potential, Eetp differs from the classical thermoneutral potential of a cell because it takes into account the heat flow due to non-faradaic processes. The average effective thermoneutral potential at 25°C (determined by selecting the most constant region of Eetp vs. time of discharge) was 4.0 …

The Medieval Librarian: Information Management In The Southwest German Empire At The Close Of The Middle Ages, Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
The direct precursor of the modern librarian or archivist was the medieval scribe or notary. This person was responsible for the production or identification, storage, and retrieval of information and was the first information manager since antiquity to use vernacular languages in documents and books. The medieval information manager was highly educated and was often a prestigious and powerful official in whom important information and state secrets were entrusted. The civic secular scribes borrowed much from church practices but also worked out their own methods of source composition, verification, arrangement, and preservation. These procedures developed into many of the practices …

The Silenced Majority: Martin V. Wilks And The Legislative Response, Susan Grover

An American worker finds himself disadvantaged by an employer's affirmative action program. The worker heads for the courthouse, reverse discrimination complaint in hand. Will he be allowed to sue? Prior to the Supreme Court's 1989 Martin v. Wilks decision, the answer to that question tended to be "no." Wilks changed the answer to an emphatic ·yes." With the 1991 Civil Rights Act, the answer has become "probably not." This article discusses the bar against such challenges as developed through case law and recent congressional action. It addresses the implications that the new statutory bar will have for the structure of …

The Impropriety Of Expert Witness Testimony On The Law, Thomas E. Baker
The Impropriety Of Expert Witness Testimony On The Law, Thomas E. Baker
Faculty Publications
Professor Baker weighs in on a new trend of allowing expert opinion on the status of the law. He begins with a brief history of lay and expert opinion testimony and continues with an analysis of Rule 702 of the Federal Rules of Evidence before concluding that expert opinion on the law simply has no place in federal practice.
Some Preliminary Thoughts On Long-Range Planning For The Federal Judiciary, Thomas E. Baker
Some Preliminary Thoughts On Long-Range Planning For The Federal Judiciary, Thomas E. Baker
Faculty Publications
Professor Baker gives his prescription for the Long-Range Planning Committee of the Judicial Conference. First, he considers the "mission" of the federal courts, explaining that there should be no single, objectively correct conception of the role of the federal courts. Second, he discusses his conception of long-range planning, in terms of a relatively short event horizon and the absolutely wide-open scope of the range of proposals that are relevant to the work of the Committee. Third, he describes his preliminary thoughts on the role of the Committee to be a kind of permanent Federal Courts Study Committee modeled after comparable …
“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike
“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike
Faculty Publications
A hypocoristicon is generally a single-element name resulting from the shortening of an originally longer one. Hebrew names and Semitic names in general, were often composed of two elements (or, as was often the case in Akkadian names and sometimes the case with West Semitic ones, three elements) which formed a nominal or verbal sentence.

Optimal Response To Periodic Shortage: Engineering/Economic Analysis For A Large Urban Water District, Anthony Fisher, David Fullerton, Nile Hatch, Peter Reinelt
Optimal Response To Periodic Shortage: Engineering/Economic Analysis For A Large Urban Water District, Anthony Fisher, David Fullerton, Nile Hatch, Peter Reinelt
Faculty Publications
The problem addressed by this study is how a large urban water district can best respond to a drought or the prospect of a drought. Specifically, what is the least cost combination of alternatives to meet periodic shortages? A solution to this problem may involve structural approaches (such as developing new local storage capacity), a mix of structural and nonstructural (such as conjunctive use combined with water exchanges or sales), or purely nonstructural approaches (such as changes in water pricing). The application is to the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), which includes portions of Alameda and Contra Costa counties …

Measurements have been made of the low-temperature magnetic response of single, isolated, micron-size Au loops. The magnetic response is found to contain a component which oscillates with the applied magnetic flux with a fundamental period of Φ0=h/e. The amplitude of the oscillatory component corresponds to a persistent current of ≃(0.3–2.0)evF/L, 1 to 2 orders of magnitude larger than predicted by current theories.
Resource Integration Using A Large Knowledge Base In Carnot, Christine Collet, Michael N. Huhns, Wei-Min Shen
Resource Integration Using A Large Knowledge Base In Carnot, Christine Collet, Michael N. Huhns, Wei-Min Shen
Faculty Publications
A method for integrating separately developed information resources that overcomes incompatibilities in syntax and semantics and permits the resources to be accessed and modified coherently is described. The method provides logical connectivity among the information resources via a semantic service layer that automates the maintenance of data integrity and provides an approximation of global data integration across systems. This layer is a fundamental part of the Carnot architecture, which provides tools for interoperability across global enterprises.

Time-Courses In The Retention Of Food Material In The Bivalves Potamocorbula Amurensis And Macoma Balthica: Significance To The Absorption Of Carbon And Chromium, Alan W. Decho, Samuel N. Luoma
Faculty Publications
Time courses for ingestion, retention and release via feces of microbial food was investigated using 2 bivalves with different feeding strategies, Potamocorbula amurensis, and Macoma balthica. The results showed 2 pathways for the uptake of food material in these clams. The first is represented by an initial label pulse in the feces. The second pathway operates over longer time periods. Inert 51Cr-labeled beads were used to determine time frames for these pathways. The first pathway, involving extracellular digestion and intestinal uptake, is relatively inefficient in the digestion of bacterial cells by P. amurensis but more efficient in …
