A General Weighting Theory For Ensemble Learning: Beyond Variance Reduction Via Spectral And Geometric Structure, Ernest Fokoue
A General Weighting Theory For Ensemble Learning: Beyond Variance Reduction Via Spectral And Geometric Structure, Ernest Fokoue
Articles
Ensemble learning is traditionally justified as a variance-reduction strategy, explaining its strong performance for unstable predictors such as decision trees. This explanation, however, does not account for ensembles constructed from intrinsically stable estimators-including smoothing splines, kernel ridge regression, Gaussian process regression, and other regularized reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) methods whose variance is already tightly controlled by regularization and spectral shrinkage. This paper develops a general weighting theory for ensemble learning that moves beyond classical variance-reduction arguments. We formalize ensembles as linear operators acting on a hypothesis space and endow the space of weighting sequences with geometric and spectral constraints. …

Lifting Constraints: Venezuelan Oil And Global Market Adjustment, Niloofar Adel, Andrea A. Bastianin, Luca Pedini, Marta Visconti
Lifting Constraints: Venezuelan Oil And Global Market Adjustment, Niloofar Adel, Andrea A. Bastianin, Luca Pedini, Marta Visconti
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We quantify the contribution of Venezuela’s oil sector collapse to changes in global oil market responsiveness after 2007. We extend the multi-country structural model of Baumeister and Hamilton (2024) by modeling Venezuela explicitly and constructing a counterfactual production path that abstracts from the 2007 institutional shift. This counterfactual isolates the mechanical contribution of Venezuelan supply and provides an upper bound on its impact. We document a sharp decline in global short-run supply elasticity and a more than doubling of the oil price multiplier after 2007. Decomposition results show that this increase is driven primarily by a reduction in the effective …
Couples Neutrality, Marriage Neutrality, And Two-Earner Deductions, Daniel Shaviro
Couples Neutrality, Marriage Neutrality, And Two-Earner Deductions, Daniel Shaviro
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Tax policy discussions of how to tax married couples, as compared to singles, often focus on the by now much-criticized norms of “marriage neutrality” and “couples neutrality.” While these norms are largely unpersuasive, they do offer a useful analytic starting point, because of both (a) how they relate to more validly expressed concerns, and (b) the significance of the empirical reasons why they generally do not hold.
In evaluating the proper relative tax treatment of different married couples, one of the most important factors that the federal income tax law fails to recognize is the difference between one-earner and two-earner …

The Role of Wait Time Disclosures in Public Housing: Evidence from Seattle: This paper studies how providing wait time information affects applicant choices and allocation outcomes in a public housing allocation mechanism, where applicants choose their preferred communities and receive housing units on a first-come, first-served basis. Under such a mechanism, applicants' choices depend on their preferences and subjective beliefs about expected wait times for each community. Using administrative data from the Seattle Housing Authority, I study the effect of its disclosure of Historical Wait Time (HWT) information, which is provided as a discrete HWT signal for each community, such …

Continuous Deep Learning With Elastic Weight Consolidation For Robust Multi-Class Lung Cancer Diagnosis, Zainab Muhammed, Belal Al-Khateeb
Mesopotamian Journal of Big Data
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer in the world, thus demanding an urgent requirement for reliable and reproducible diagnostic tools for its early detection and differentiation into subtypes. Most classical deep learning methods suffer from catastrophic forgetting and have trouble with continuous learning, especially with an increasing amount of clinical data. This work investigates these issues by introducing a best multi-class lung cancer classification framework consisting of Residual Network architecture (Resnet-50) and Continuous Deep Learning (CDL), and Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC). The proposed model was trained sequentially using two tasks: Task1 consisted of 6,800 histopathological images …

Quantum Indiscernibility And Perspectivalism, Emily Adlam
Quantum Indiscernibility And Perspectivalism, Emily Adlam
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
It has often been suggested that similar quantum particles may be a counterexample to the principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles. In this article, I discuss the status of indiscernibility in a perspectival approach to quantum mechanics. I argue that adopting an internal physical perspective can have the effect of making entities discernible even if they are not discernible relative to external reference frames, and thus perspectivalism offers a new way to understand the physical meaning of weak discernibility. I discuss whether this approach is circular, and I consider whether the reference frames involved are physically meaningful. I conclude that …

Making Space To Learn: Prison-Less Places, Nicole Patrie
Making Space To Learn: Prison-Less Places, Nicole Patrie
Journal of Prison Education Research
Diversifying modalities or modes of program delivery inside prisons is necessary and important to increase access to programs; however, this also demands that learning is intended to occur in most places of a prison. In this paper I present the concept prison-less places, relational, temporary places where the prison is less noticeable and where learning becomes possible. Exploring three dimensions of learning, I argue that the existence of prison-less places brings balance to these dimensions and is crucial for learning to occur inside prisons. As the boundaries between program and prison space become more fluid and permeable with modalities …
Prejudicial Impact Vs. Human Psychology The Court System’S Forever Battle, Harrison Alexander Boyd
Prejudicial Impact Vs. Human Psychology The Court System’S Forever Battle, Harrison Alexander Boyd
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The correlation of legal safeguards and human psychology amplifying prejudice within the courtroom creates a perpetual challenge for those tasked with ensuring fairness in judicial proceedings. This paper focuses on the limitations of court mechanisms such as objections, jury instructions, and subsequent curative instructions in mitigating the effects of prejudicial evidence. Through case law coupled with cinematic examples and psychological theories, this paper highlights the battle between coexisting human psychology and prejudicial influences on jury decision-making. The proposed remedies within the text include enhanced jury education, pre-trial intervention, and post-trial juror reviews, all to minimize the prejudicial impact.
“Faith As A Shield”: Challenging Religious Exemptions To Child Welfare Statutes In Response To Institutional Child Abuse, Shailey Mussey
“Faith As A Shield”: Challenging Religious Exemptions To Child Welfare Statutes In Response To Institutional Child Abuse, Shailey Mussey
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
This Note analyzes the role of religious exemptions in federal and state child welfare statutes in facilitating abuse within the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI), a loosely defined network of residential treatment programs, wilderness camps, and therapeutic boarding schools. Although religious exemptions were originally intended to safeguard religious liberty and parental rights, their statutory design has produced significant regulatory gaps that permit certain faith-affiliated institutions to operate with minimal oversight. By tracing the historical development of these exemptions and examining their contemporary application across multiple jurisdictions, this Note demonstrates how religious status can function as a shield against meaningful accountability. It …

Simulation has been shown to be an effective learning modality that can be used to assess competency and clinical judgment. Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) has revolutionized simulation across various fields. By creating highly realistic and interactive environments, IVR allows users to experience scenarios that would be difficult, dangerous, or impossible to replicate in real life. This is a tremendous advantage to preparing our student nurses for today’s challenging workforce. There are several different types of IVR including faculty moderated and independent IVR with drop down menus with both having limitations. The purpose of this pilot study is to compare cost …

In 2023, 13.5% of U.S. households and 12.9% of Nebraska households experienced food insecurity. The negative effect of food insecurity on the health of patients is well known and includes decreased intake of nutritious foods, increased intake of carbohydrate‑dense foods, and having to choose between paying for food versus other health needs. Food insecurity has also been associated with multiple chronic conditions (asthma, bronchitis, COPD, chronic pain, diabetes, kidney disease, sleep disorders) and lower overall health status. While food insecurity is a major problem faced by many in our community and has been highly associated with poor health outcomes. Despite …

While nursing shortages are increasing and nurses are reporting higher rates of burnout and job-related stress, it is critical that educators in pre-licensure nursing programs identify strategies to better prepare novice nurses for entering the workforce. Using Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory as a framework, this study sought to investigate whether a senior clinical practicum experience increases general and nursing competence self-efficacy, which may indicate better ability to cope in the face of adversity. This study was a quantitative one-group pretest-posttest design, investigating undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students from accredited institutions in Kentucky. Results suggest that the clinical …
Moving Forward While Swaying Left And Right: How To Govern National Innovation Systems-Catalysed Innovation Ecosystems?, Jiang Yu
Double Helix Methodology
There is a burgeoning literature arguing that addressing grand challenges, such as de-globalization, requires a set of complementary actors to build innovation ecosystems (IE), which are also strategically integrated into the national innovation system (NIS). We conceptualize this specific systemic phenomenon as a new type of IE—NIS-catalysed IE—whose sustainable growth is said to be constantly hindered by dependent yet opposing tensions. The current literature provides fruitful insights into governing paradoxical tensions; however, some taken-for-granted theoretical assumptions within it are problematic when examining the relationship between salient paradoxes embodied in NIS-catalysed IE and effective governance mechanisms. Drawing on a single longitudinal …

Exact Soliton Solutions Of The Nonlinear Time-Fractional Schrödinger Equation Via Atangana–Baleanu And M-Truncated Operators, Bahadır Kopçasiz, Fatma Nur Kaya Sağlam, Mehmet Şenol
Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications
The main objective of this work is to obtain exact soliton solutions for a nonlinear time-fractional equation model describing wave profiles arising in various physical systems. To derive different wave structures associated with the considered model, two analytical techniques are employed: the extended G'\G^2-expansion method and the modified auxiliary equation (MAE) approach. A wave transformation is applied to reduce the nonlinear time-fractional equation to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (NLODE) by means of the M-truncated and Atangana-Baleanu (AB) fractional operators. Several classes of solutions, including exponential, hyperbolic, and trigonometric wave forms, are obtained. Over and above the analytical results, graphical …
