Embeddings Of Compact Convex Sets And Locally Compact Cones, Jimmie D. Lawson Jan 1976

Embeddings Of Compact Convex Sets And Locally Compact Cones, Jimmie D. Lawson

Faculty Publications

The main result of this paper is that a compact convex set with a basis of neighborhoods (not necessarily open) at each point which are convex can be embedded in a locally convex separated topological vector space. An analogous result is proved for locally compact cones. Along the way it is shown that any compact convex set can be embedded as a base of a locally compact cone in a separated topological vector space, and that the various notions of local convexity coincide in a compact convex set. © 1976, University of California, Berkeley. Studies Of Handicapped Students: Volume 1: Whom Do Teachers Identify As Handicapped, Patricia Craig, Norman Mceachron Dec 1975

Studies Of Handicapped Students: Volume 1: Whom Do Teachers Identify As Handicapped, Patricia Craig, Norman Mceachron

Faculty Publications

This volume reports the first of two studies conducted by the Educational Policy Research Center (EPRC) of SRI for the Assistant Secretary for Education (ASE) on the handicapped school population. The volume presents data on patterns of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of teacher-identified handicapped students. The purpose of the analysis was to determine whether significant differences in rates of identification of handicapping conditions are associated with family income, race, population size of place of residence, or geographic location. This study briefly reviews past studies; explores a new set of data to determine its usefulness in determining characteristics of the teacher-identified …

The Development And Analysis Of Base Line Data For The Estimation Of Incidence In The Handicapped School Age Population, Patricia Craig, Norman Mceachron Jan 1975

The Development And Analysis Of Base Line Data For The Estimation Of Incidence In The Handicapped School Age Population, Patricia Craig, Norman Mceachron

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was, first, to examine and critique the more popular incidence sources for handicapping conditions in the school age population, and second, to establish reasonably reliable base line data on which the future analysis of special population groups can be grounded. On the basis of this study, we suggest that the National Center of Health Statistics estimates become the primary source for further analysis due to both their reliability and comparability. It is questionable whether these figures could be refined further by conducting an independent national survey of school children. Data reliability is important, since even …

The Design Of Videotape Systems For Legal Education, Dale A. Whitman, Gerald R. Williams Jan 1975

The Design Of Videotape Systems For Legal Education, Dale A. Whitman, Gerald R. Williams

Faculty Publications

Over the past 20 years in which videotape technology has been commercially available, considerable literature has offered encouragement and advice concerning its general educational applications. More recently, a developing body of literature, materials, and practices has brought videotape to the attention of legal educators. One of the chief impediments to realization of the full potential of videotape in legal education, however, is the lack of an adequate description of the necessary facilities and electronic equipment. This comment will discuss the basic uses of videotape in legal education and the physical facilities and equipment (including types, arrangement, and costs) that might …

Identification Of Tasks In Photo-Offset Lithography Occupations, University Of Northern Iowa Jan 1975

Identification Of Tasks In Photo-Offset Lithography Occupations, University Of Northern Iowa

Faculty Publications

The research project was designed to provide data pertaining to performance tasks in specific occupations in various areas of vocational/technical education. The data presented in the document is intended to be used to develop appropriate objectives and curricular content to assist in the preparation of individuals entering the specific photo-offset lithography occupations of layout man; paste-up man; lithographic cameraman; stripper; platemaker; and offset pressman. To discover the tasks and functions required for these job categories; a list of graphic arts industries in Iowa was developed; graphic arts personnel in three cities were interviewed and; from that information; the major instruments …

A Contextual Approach To Investigating Verbal And Nonverbal Behaviors, Douglas M. Brooks, Barry Wilson Jan 1975

A Contextual Approach To Investigating Verbal And Nonverbal Behaviors, Douglas M. Brooks, Barry Wilson

Faculty Publications

This investigation utilized a recent concept developed by researchers and theoreticians studying nonverbal behavior--the contextual framework. Instruments of demonstrated reliability were employed to record simultaneous verbal and nonverbal data within the selected contextual framework of student-initiated questions. Data was collected at the University of Northern Iowa; Malcolm Price Laboratory School. The study sample included 15 teachers from grades one through twelve and 60 pupils. Pupils were placed in categories by their teachers: (1) accepting; (2) concerned; (3) indifferent; and (4) rejecting. Objectives of the investigation included: (1) to investigate physical proximity as a quantifiable dimension of nonverbal behavior; (2) to …

The Role Of A Dolichol-Oligosaccharide As An Intermediate In Glycoprotein Biosynthesis, An-Fei Hsu, John W. Baynes, Edward C. Heath

Incubation of mouse myeloma microsomes with GDP-[(14)C]mannose results in the biosynthesis of [(14)C]mannose phosphoryl dolichol [Baynes, J. W., Hsu, A.-F. & Heath, E. C. (1973) J. Biol. Chem. 248, 5693-5704] and a [(14)C]mannose- and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)-containing oligosaccharide derivative of dolichol. Thus, [(14)C]mannose phosphoryl dolichol and [(14)C]mannose-labeled oligosaccharide pyrophosphoryl dolichol were isolated from incubation mixtures by solubilization in 2% (w/v) Triton X-100 and the lipids were separated from small molecules by gel filtration fractionation. After removal of radioactive protein from the preparation, the two lipid derivatives were separated quantitatively by fractionation on a concanavalin A-Sepharose column; [(14)C]mannose phosphoryl dolichol was not …
