Building Literacy For Knowledge Economies: Reading And Writing About Trends And Issues In Business Week, Clive Muir Jan 2003

Building Literacy For Knowledge Economies: Reading And Writing About Trends And Issues In Business Week, Clive Muir

Faculty Publications

Knowledge economies require highly skilled workers to perform complex, information-based tasks with minimum supervision. Yet, studies in Canada and the United States show that even college educated workers often lack the information literacy skills necessary to perform their jobs. In this session, we will discuss how reading and writing about business trends and issues can help to improve business students’ analytical and critical thinking abilities.

An Analysis Of The Readability Of The Md&As Of Small, Medium, & Large Revenue Generating Cities, Shannon Lutz, Treba Marsh, Lucille Montondon Jan 2003

An Analysis Of The Readability Of The Md&As Of Small, Medium, & Large Revenue Generating Cities, Shannon Lutz, Treba Marsh, Lucille Montondon

Faculty Publications

Studies assessing the annual reports of publicly held corporations have shown mixed results in regard to the readability levels of those reports. Recently, the Governmental Accounting Standards Board adopted GASB 33, 34, and 35 in which specific guidelines are outlined for the reporting of governmental entities. Are the Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports (annual reports) of the governmental entities understandable to the average user?

This study argues that the Managements Discussion and Analysis, the summary portion of the governmental annual report, is not understandable to the average reader. The sample was equally divided among small, medium, and large revenue-generating cities that …

From Learning To Talk To Learning Engineering; Drawing Connections Across The Disciplines, Nikos J. Mourtos Jan 2003

From Learning To Talk To Learning Engineering; Drawing Connections Across The Disciplines, Nikos J. Mourtos

Faculty Publications

This paper introduces eight so-called conditions of learning (immersion, demonstration, engagement, expectations, responsibility, approximation, employment and response), which have been previously established for the learning of literacy. It is stipulated that these conditions are universal in nature; in other words, they must be present for any learning to occur. When these conditions are met, students learn more efficiently and are able to enjoy and appreciate their subject matter. The article discusses briefly how these conditions were established and their relevance in the study of engineering. More importantly, the article also presents examples of how these conditions can be satisfied in …

Sphericules And Fragments: Minding The Gaps, Ted M. Coopman Jan 2003

Sphericules And Fragments: Minding The Gaps, Ted M. Coopman

Faculty Publications

Michael McGee exemplified the scholar embracing all tools and ideas, the fragments that make up our existence, in exploring and explaining our world. I argue that bridging the gaps that separate these fragments, or what Gitlin (1989) called sphericules, is the essence of what constitutes public scholarship. Starting from Habermas' (1989) description of the public sphere I explore how interdisciplinarity holds the keys to bridging the gaps between publics. I supported this with a discussion of the history of academe in America and the brief survey of the new infrastructures being built to expand our fields of exploration and the …

Environmental Sovereignty Discourse Of The Brazilian Amazon: National Politics And The Globalization Of Indigenous Resistance, Anne Marie Todd Jan 2003

Environmental Sovereignty Discourse Of The Brazilian Amazon: National Politics And The Globalization Of Indigenous Resistance, Anne Marie Todd

Faculty Publications

This analysis explores the connection between globalization and national identity in cultural expressions of environmental sovereignty. Competing claims to resources in the Brazilian Amazon reflect changing notions of state authority and the role of indigenous citizens in protection of biodiversity. The debate between Brazilian state governments and the Yanomami Indians and seringueiros (Brazilian Rubber Tapper communities) illustrates the complex interaction of national identity and expressions of local culture in a global ecological context.

Progress And Opportunities In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Health Communications, Laurie A. Drabble, J. Keatley, G. Marcelle Jan 2003

Progress And Opportunities In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Health Communications, Laurie A. Drabble, J. Keatley, G. Marcelle

Faculty Publications

This article describes elements of effective health communication and highlights strategies that may best be adopted or adapted in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. Studies have documented the utility of multidimensional approaches to health communication from the macro level of interventions targeting entire populations to the micro level of communication between health care provider and consumer. Although evidence of health disparities in LGBT communities underscores the importance of population-specific interventions, health promotion campaigns rarely target these populations and health communication activities seldom account for the diversity of LGBT communities. Advances in health communication suggest promising direction …

The Semiotics Of Signlessness: A Buddhist Doctrine Of Signs, Mario D'Amato Jan 2003

The Semiotics Of Signlessness: A Buddhist Doctrine Of Signs, Mario D'Amato

Faculty Publications

In this paper, I consider a Buddhist response to the issue of unlimited semiosis: In other words, I offer a Buddhist account of how unlimited semiosis should be understood. I do this by following the doctrine of signs offered in an Indian Buddhist text of the Mahamyamna from circa the fourth century CE, a text known as the Mahamyamnasutra m mlamD kamra (Ornament to the Scriptures of the Great Vehicle; hereafter, ‘the Ornament’). Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Buddhist semiotics, from both a historical and a philosophical point of view, is that in its theorizing of the semiotic process, …

During the past two decades, the United States has experienced dramatic developments in the area of biomedical research. Expanding budgets, augmented computer capabilities, and the Human Genome Project have all significantly enhanced research capabilities. Consequently, the number of research projects conducted in this country is ever growing, and the enrollment of an adequate number of human subjects is becoming an increasingly challenging task.

Clinical research involving human participants is governed by federal regulations that have been promulgated by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In light of the proliferation of medical …

Effects Of Controlled Dog Hunting On Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Christopher E. Comer Jan 2003

Effects Of Controlled Dog Hunting On Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Christopher E. Comer

Faculty Publications

Understanding the responses of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to controlled dog hunting can aid in the effective implementation of canine-assisted population management strategies. We examined the 24-h diel movements of 13 radio-collared female deer exposed to dog hunting on the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina, where regulated dog hunting has occurred since 1965. We compared diel home range size, rate of travel, and distance between extreme diel locations before, during, and after hunts from 14 September-14 December 2002. Die1 home range size (F2,91= 7.71, P < 0.001) and distance between extreme diel locations (F2,9l= 6.78, P = 0.002) on hunt day were greater than 10-day pre- and …

Pointing The Finger Of Blame: News Media Coverage Of Popular-Culture Culpability, Erica Scharrer, Lisa M. Weidman, Kimberly Bissell Jan 2003

Pointing The Finger Of Blame: News Media Coverage Of Popular-Culture Culpability, Erica Scharrer, Lisa M. Weidman, Kimberly Bissell

Faculty Publications

In the 1990s, three relatively high-profile tragedies occurred in which popular media products (including movies, recorded music, television talk shows, the Internet, tabloid newspapers, and video games) were argued to be the primary cause. This study analyzes the discourse surrounding the culpability that was placed on popular culture in major newspaper coverage of the car crash that killed Princess Diana, the murder associated with the “Jenny Jones” show, and the shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The analysis reveals patterns in the assignment of blame—and relatively more rarely of exoneration—of popular culture, interpreting why and how popular culture …

Authenticity In The Skateboarding World, Becky Beal, Lisa Weidman Jan 2003

Authenticity In The Skateboarding World, Becky Beal, Lisa Weidman

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the values and norms that constitute legitimacy, or authenticity, in the skateboarding world. Both authors spent a considerable amount of time with the skateboarding world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Lisa Weidman worked at a skateboarding magazine for several years, and Becky Beal did an extensive ethnographic study of skateboarders. Using our experiences and research, we describe the characteristics that skateboarders and the industry use to identify an authentic skateboarder. The first section, on the skaters' perspective, is based primarily on Beal's interactions with skateboarders; the second section, on the …

“Legal Or Illegal? Documented Or Undocumented?” The Struggle Over Brookhaven’S Neighborhood Preservation Act, Jackson B. Miller Jan 2003

“Legal Or Illegal? Documented Or Undocumented?” The Struggle Over Brookhaven’S Neighborhood Preservation Act, Jackson B. Miller

Faculty Publications

This critical essay applies the concept of “presence” as a theoretical lens for explaining the rhetorical efficacy of protest events surrounding a contemporary debate about immigrants’ rights in a suburban New York township. Specifically, the protests surrounding the town board meetings regarding Brookhaven’s “Neighborhood Preservation Act,” a piece of legislation geared toward making rental laws more stringent, are examined. A group comprised largely of white, upper middle-class citizens voiced their support for the proposed legislation, while a group of day laborers and those sympathetic with their cause characterized the proposed legislation as a form of racial discrimination disguised as a …

Factor Structure Of The Coaching Behavior Questionnaire And Its Relationship To Athlete Variables, Jean M. Williams, Gerald J. Jerome, Laura J. Kenow, Tracie Rogers, Tessa A. Sartain, Greg Darland Jan 2003

Factor Structure Of The Coaching Behavior Questionnaire And Its Relationship To Athlete Variables, Jean M. Williams, Gerald J. Jerome, Laura J. Kenow, Tracie Rogers, Tessa A. Sartain, Greg Darland

Faculty Publications

Little research exists to identify optimal coaching behaviors and factors that influence the effectiveness of particular behaviors. The present study tested 484 athletes in order to determine sub-scales on the Coaching Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ). The CBQ measures athletes’ perceptions of coaching behaviors and evaluates their effectiveness in helping athletes play better and maintain optimal mental states and focus. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the two-factor model (negative activation, supportiveness/emotional composure) derived from an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Correlational analyses indicated that athletes with higher anxiety and lower self-confidence and compatibility with the coach were more likely to negatively evaluate …

One of the effects of the “industrialization” of professional organizations has been a shift in the business forms that these organizations adopt. Some organizations have shifted from partnership associations into professional corporations. Other organizations have remained partnerships in form, but have significantly restructured the roles of partners.

Possibilities For Collaborative Law: Ethics And Practice Of Lawyer Disqualification And Process Control In A New Model Of Lawyering, John M. Lande Jan 2003

Possibilities For Collaborative Law: Ethics And Practice Of Lawyer Disqualification And Process Control In A New Model Of Lawyering, John M. Lande

Faculty Publications

This article assesses the possibilities for collaborative law (CL) to promote problem-solving negotiation and analyzes the operation and effect of the CL disqualification agreement (DA), which CL leaders hold as essential to the process. In CL, the lawyers and clients agree to negotiate from the outset of the case using a problem-solving approach. Under CL theory, the process creates a metaphorical "container" by using a DA disqualifying both lawyers from representing their clients if either party chooses to proceed in litigation. This article argues that much CL theory and practice is valuable, including protocols of early commitment to negotiation, interest-based …

The Authority Of A Court To Order Disgorgement For Violations Of The Current Good Manufacturing Practices Requirement Of The Federal Food, Drug, And Cosmetic Act, Erika Lietzan, Elizabeth M. Walsh Jan 2003

The Authority Of A Court To Order Disgorgement For Violations Of The Current Good Manufacturing Practices Requirement Of The Federal Food, Drug, And Cosmetic Act, Erika Lietzan, Elizabeth M. Walsh

Faculty Publications

This article addresses the question as to whether a federal court has the authority to compel a pharmaceutical company to disgorge profits obtained from an alleged violation of the FDCA, specifically the failure of a pharmaceutical company to comply with current good manufacturing practices (GMPs). Section II of this article summarizes the article to which we are responding. In all fairness, it did not purport to be a full-blown defense, and we expect the agency's comprehensive defense of disgorgement would be considerably more detailed. Section III turns to the Sixth Circuit case on which FDA rests its argument for disgorgement, …

In January, Fifty-three, we left our English home, Determined for the Gospel's sake, to Zion's land to come. Our family was very small, its members numbered three, Yet strong in faith of Israel's God, and full of hope were we. 'Twas not to us an easy task to bid old friends adieu, To take a long farewell of those who always had been true, To leave for aye, the cozy home we made but just before, And take a last fond look of things we should behold no more; The wind blew keen, as out we went into the cold …

The Law And Economics Of Disability Accommodations, Michael Ashley Stein Jan 2003

The Law And Economics Of Disability Accommodations, Michael Ashley Stein

Faculty Publications

The Americans with Disabilities Act provides a clear mandate that disabled workers be provided with "reasonable" accommodations, but does not meaningfully articulate the standards by which reasonableness ought to be measured. Until now, neither courts nor commentators have provided a systematic model for analyzing accommodation claims. This Article articulates an initial law and economics framework for analyzing disability-related accommodations. In doing so, it demonstrates how accommodations span a cost continuum that can be divided into areas of Wholly Efficient and Semi-Efficient Accommodations to be funded by private employers, Social Benefit Gain Efficient Accommodations where the costs should be borne by …

Data Mining Of Forensic Association Rules, James V. Hansen, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Rayman D. Meservy Jan 2003

Data Mining Of Forensic Association Rules, James V. Hansen, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Rayman D. Meservy

Faculty Publications

Data mining offers a potentially powerful method for analyzing the large data sets that are typically found in forensic computing (FC) investigations to discover useful and previously unknown patterns within the data. The contribution of this paper is an innovative and rigorous data mining methodology that enables effective search of large volumes of complex data to discover offender profiles. These profiles are based on association rules, which are computationally sound, flexible, easily interpreted, and provide a ready set of data for refinement via predictive models. Methodology incorporates link analysis and creation of predictive models based on association rule input.
