We present a compilation of high time-resolution photometric observations of quiescent soft X-ray transients obtained with the Acquisition Camera on Gemini-South. A0620-00 (V616 Mon) was observed with a short cycle time and high precision. Superimposed on the ellipsoidal modulation we find several prominent flares together with weaker continual variability. The flares seen sample a shorter time-scale than those reported in previous observations, with rise times as low as 30 s or less; most flares show unresolved peaks. The power density spectrum (PDS) of A0620-00 appears to exhibit band-limited noise closely resembling the X-ray PDS of black hole candidates in their …
Unitary Representations And Theta Correspondence For Type I Classical Groups, Hongyu He
Unitary Representations And Theta Correspondence For Type I Classical Groups, Hongyu He

In this paper, we discuss the positivity of the Hermitian form (,)π introduced by Li in Invent. Math. 27 (1989) 237-255. Let (G1, G2) be a type I dual pair with G1 the smaller group. Let π be an irreducible unitary representation in the semistable range of θ(MG1, MG2) (see Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Vol. 2, 2000, pp. 255-283). We prove that the invariant Hermitian form (,)π is positive semidefinite under certain restrictions on the size of G2 and a mild growth condition on the matrix coefficients of π. Therefore, if (,)π does not vanish, θ(MG1, MG2) (π) is unitary. …
Behavioral Approach To Analyzing Corporate Failures, A. Mechele Dickerson
Behavioral Approach To Analyzing Corporate Failures, A. Mechele Dickerson
Faculty Publications
Recent corporate failures indicate that existing laws fail to give boards of directors adequate incentives to acknowledge that some financially troubled firms simply cannot be salvaged. Relying primarily on insights from law and behavioral science literature, this Article notes that directors have a natural tendency to underestimate risks and overestimate their ability to save an insolvent or near insolvent firm. This Article urges the imposition of a duty to file a timely bankruptcy petition because such a duty will encourage directors to consider the interests of all the firms' constituents, including workers, creditors, and the local community, when making decisions …

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls
To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls
Faculty Publications
This paper addresses a current debate over the universality of ideophones, a class of expressions that are used to simulate, through performative foregrounding, the salient processes and perceptions of everyday life experience. Using data from Quechua-speaking Runa in Amazonian Ecuador, I argue for a view of ideophones as a type of cultural discourse through which speakers align themselves with nonhuman life forms and forces of nature. This alignment is suggested by the special performative properties of ideophones, which collapse the distinction between a speech event and a narrated event, thus compelling a speaker to become an action, event, or process, …
Inverse Multiplexing In Short-Range Multi-Transport Wireless Communications, Lichen Dai, Heidi R. Duffin, James C. Funk, Charles D. Knutson
Inverse Multiplexing In Short-Range Multi-Transport Wireless Communications, Lichen Dai, Heidi R. Duffin, James C. Funk, Charles D. Knutson
Faculty Publications
This paper describes a mechanism for utilizing Inverse Multiplexing to significantly increase the bandwidth available to short-range wireless devices. Previous work with Inverse Multiplexing has focused on wired networks; its implementation with short-range wireless transports introduces heterogeneity in the links, which must be taken into account. A mathematical model for an Inverse Multiplexing system is derived for several scheduling algorithms. Both Process Limited and Transport Limited systems are examined. The validity of this model is shown by our implementation of an Inverse Multiplexing layer that uses IrDA and Bluetooth transports. Concepts related to Inverse Multiplexing such as usage models, negotiation, …
Transport Discovery In Wireless Multi-Transport Environments, Shannon B. Barnes, Charles D. Knutson, Ryan W. Woodings
Transport Discovery In Wireless Multi-Transport Environments, Shannon B. Barnes, Charles D. Knutson, Ryan W. Woodings
Faculty Publications
In order to utilize multiple transports, devices must discover common mechanisms for communication, a procedure we call Multi-Transport Discovery. The Multi-Transport Discovery algorithm presented in this paper is a four-phase procedure (Transport Probing, Transport Querying, Address-to-Device Mapping, and Transport Accessibility) that can discover common transports within a multi-transport environment. Transport Probing uses a transport-dependent device discovery mechanism to discover an initial link. Transport Querying communicates over the probed link to query additional transports. Address-to-Device Mapping correctly correlates each transport to a remote device. Finally, Transport Accessibility periodically ascertains link availability during an application session.

Detailed performance assessment of space-time coding algorithms in realistic channels is critically dependent upon accurate knowledge of the wireless channel spatial characteristics. This paper presents an experimental measurement platform capable of providing the narrowband channel transfer matrix for wireless communications scenarios. The system is used to directly measure key multiple-input-multiple-output parameters in an indoor environment at 2.45 GHz. Linear antenna arrays of different sizes and construction with up to ten elements at transmit and receive are utilized in the measurement campaign. This data is analyzed to reveal channel properties such as transfer matrix element statistical distributions and temporal and spatial …

Bacillus anthracis is a bacterial pathogen of great importance, both historically and in the present. This study presents data collected from several investigations and indicates that B. anthracis virulence is associated with the clonality and virulence of plasmids pXO1 and pXO2. Guinea pigs vaccinated with Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed were challenged with 20 B. anthracis isolates representative of worldwide genetic diversity. These same isolates were characterized with respect to plasmid copy number by using a novel method of quantitative PCR developed for rapid and efficient detection of B. anthracis from environmental samples. We found that the copy numbers for both pXO1 …

We show that the lower bounds for Betti numbers given in (J. Pure Appl. Algebra 157 (2001) 135) are equalities for a class of racks that includes dihedral and Alexander racks. We confirm a conjecture from the same paper by defining a splitting for the short exact sequence of quandle chain complexes. We define isomorphisms between Alexander racks of certain forms, and we also list the second and third homology groups of some dihedral and Alexander quandles. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Vitamin-A deficiency (VAD) is a major malnutrition problem in South Asia, where indica rice is the staple food. Indica-type rice varieties feed more than 2 billion people. Hence, we introduced a combination of transgenes using the biolistic system of transformation enabling biosynthesis of provitamin A in the endosperm of several indica rice cultivars adapted to diverse ecosystems of different countries. The rice seed-specific glutelin promoter (Gt-1 P) was used to drive the expression of phytoene synthase (psy), while lycopene β-cyclase (lcy) and phytoene desaturase (crtI), fused to the transit peptide sequence of the pea-Rubisco small subunit, were driven by the …

Blue crab Callinectes sapidus embryos from the Mississippi Sound were sampled in spring and in late summer to determine patterns of biochemical composition and of yolk utilization during embryogenesis and to ascertain potential seasonal differences in biochemical composition. The diameter of spring embryos was similar to 6% greater than summer embryos but this significant size difference was due to increased water content, not to increased organic content. The general trend in initial biochemical composition was similar in both seasons; protein was the primary component at similar to 50% of initial dry weight followed by lipid (similar to 30%), ash (similar …
An Advanced Ambiguity Selection Algorithm For Seawinds, David G. Long, David W. Draper
An Advanced Ambiguity Selection Algorithm For Seawinds, David G. Long, David W. Draper
Faculty Publications
SeaWinds on QuikSCAT, a spaceborne Ku-band scatterometer, estimates ocean winds via the relationship between the normalized radar backscatter and the vector wind. Scatterometer wind retrieval generates several possible wind vector solutions or ambiguities at each resolution cell, requiring a separate ambiguity selection step to give a unique solution. In processing SeaWinds on QuikSCAT data, the ambiguity selection is "nudged" or initialized using numerical weather prediction winds. We describe a sophisticated new ambiguity selection approach developed at Brigham Young University (BYU) that does not require nudging. The BYU method utilizes a low-order data-driven Karhunen-Loeve wind field model to promote self-consistency. Ambiguity …

High-Resolution Measurements With A Spaceborne Pencil-Beam Scatterometer Using Combined Range/Doppler Discrimination Techniques, David G. Long, Michael W. Spencer, Wu-Yang Tsai
Faculty Publications
Conically scanning pencil-beam scatterometer systems, such as the SeaWinds radar, constitute an important class of instruments for spaceborne climate observation. In addition to ocean winds, scatterometer data are being applied to a wide range of land and cryospheric applications. A key issue for future scatterometer missions is improved spatial resolution. Pencil-beam scatterometers to date have been real-aperture systems where only range discrimination is used, resulting in a relatively coarse resolution of approximately 25 km. In this paper, the addition of Doppler discrimination techniques is proposed to meet the need for higher resolution. The unique issues associated with the simultaneous application …

When I picked up David's paper to read it, I had a pencil in my hand. Years of reading my students' and my own papers made it natural to edit as I read. However, I heard in my mind the voice of my mother advising me to put the pencil down. This wasn't time to edit but to hear and understand. Still, I kept the pencil in my hand for the first few pages and made a few notes before I put it down and just read. I could hear David's voice speaking the words I read. It was good …

Carboxylate Groups On The Manganese-Stabilizing Protein Are Required For Efficient Binding Of The 24 Kda Extrinsic Protein To Photosystem Ii, Terry M. Bricker, Laurie K. Frankel
Faculty Publications
The effects of the modification of carboxylate groups on the manganese-stabilizing protein on the binding of the 24 kDa extrinsic protein to Photosystem II were investigated. Carboxylate groups on the manganese-stabilizing protein were modified with glycine methyl ester in a reaction facilitated by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide. The manganese-stabilizing protein which was modified while associated with NaCl-washed membranes could bind to calcium chloride-washed PS II membranes and reconstitute oxygen evolution in a manner similar to that observed for unmodified manganese-stabilizing protein (Frankel, L,K, Cruz, J. C. and Bricker, T. M. (1999) Biochemistry 38, 14271-14278), However, PS II membranes reconstituted with this modified protein …

Revised Analysis Of The Supersoft X-Ray Phase, Helium Enrichment, And Turnoff Time In The 2000 Outburst Of The Recurrent Nova Ci Aquilae, Izumi Hachisu, Mariko Kato, Bradley E. Schaefer
Faculty Publications
Recurrent nova CI Aquilae entered the final decline phase a bit before 2001 May, about 300 days after the optical maximum, showing the slowest evolution among recurrent novae. Based on the optically thick wind mass-loss theory of the thermonuclear runaway model, we have estimated the turnoff time of the CI Aql 2000 outburst to be in late 2001 March, after a luminous supersoft X-ray source phase lasting ∼150 days (from 2000 November until 2001 March). We have also found, by fitting our theoretical light curves with the 1917 and 2000 outbursts, the white dwarf (WD) mass to be MWD = …

Nonlinear Equations And Wavelets, A. Ludu, R. F. O'Connell, J. P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
Wavelet-inspired approaches for localized solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations (NDPE) were presented. A multi-scale similarity analysis was used which gives specific relations between the velocity, amplitude and width of localized solutions of nonlinear differential equations. This approach does not need the explicit form of the exact solutions.

Background: Four multicenter Networks (GenNet, GENOA, HyperGEN, SAPPHIRe) form the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Family Blood Pressure Program (FBPP), to search for hypertension/blood pressure (BP) genes. The networks used different family designs and targeted multiple ethnic groups, using standardized protocols and definitions. Linkage genome scans were done on samples within each network (N = 6245 relatives). Methods: The evidence was synthesized using meta-analysis. Results: Combining ethnic groups, no region reached LOD >2, but several small peaks were identified, including chromosome 2p where two other recent reports find hypertension linkage. Conclusions: No regions show uniformly large effects on BP/hypertension …

We report on the power and microwave noise performance of AlGan/GaN high electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) at frequencies f > 18 GHz (K- and Ka-bands). At 20 GHz, a record continuous-wave output power of 1.6 W has been achieved on an eight-finger 500-mum total gate-periphery device. At 29 GHz, a 120-mum gate-periphery device showed a pulsed output density of 1.6 W/mm with an associated gain of 6.7 dB and power-added efficiency of 26%. Minimum noise figure of 1.5 dB has been achieved on a 0.2 mum x 200 mum device at 26 GHz. The data demonstrate the viability of AlGan/GaN HEMTs for …

This paper answers a question of Jan J. Dijkstra by giving a proof that all three-point sets are zero dimensional. It is known that all two-point sets are zero dimensional, and it is known that for all n > 3, there are n-point sets which are not zero dimensional, so this paper answers the question for the last remaining case.

Lake Vida, one of the largest lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, was previously believed to be shallow (<10 >m) and frozen to its bed year-round. New ice-core analysis and temperature data show that beneath 19 m of ice is a water column composed of a NaCl brine with a salinity seven times that of seawater that remains liquid below - 10°C. The ice cover thickens at both its base and surface, sealing concentrated brine beneath. The ice cover is stabilized by a negative feedback between ice growth and the freezing-point depression of the brine. The ice cover …10>

Research has generally found that firms competing in high uncertainty environments gain advantages from having diverse (heterogeneous) management teams (TMTs). Employing a national survey of 70 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the present study examined whether TM T heterogeneity in functional background, international work experience, and foreign language proficiency had a stronger relationship with export performance for firms competing in high than those competing in low uncertainty environments. Results were generally weak when market and industry factors contributing to uncertainty were examined separately; however, additional analysis showed that the hypothesized relationship did exist when uncertainty was measured employing both factors …
