“The Proverbs,” In 1 Kings To Malachi, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

The book of Proverbs is found in that portion of the Old Testament known as the Writings (material not included in the Law or the Prophets), and is categorized as Wisdom Literature. It is a compilation of instructions and sayings that has as its aim the social, moral, and ultimately, spiritual betterment of people. As an anthology, Proverbs is designed for consultation and study in measured doses.

Free Speech In Pauline Political Theology, David E. Fredrickson Oct 1992

Free Speech In Pauline Political Theology, David E. Fredrickson

Faculty Publications

Although it is generally recognized today that Paul’s faith was not a religion of subjectivity, some may nevertheless object to the notion that the apostle’s theology has a political dimension. Surely, it may be said, the sectarian communities which Paul nurtured with the stark contrasts of “outsiders” and “insiders” did not think that their task was to influence public policy in the cities of the Roman empire. While it is of course preposterous to think that the early Christians had Caesar’s ear, influencing public policy is only one way of engaging in politics.

Nephite Uses And Interpretations Of Zenos, Noel B. Reynolds Jul 1992

Nephite Uses And Interpretations Of Zenos, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The allegory of the olive tree attributed to the ancient prophet Zenos and copied from the plates of brass into the small plates by Jacob was a source used by several Book of Mormon prophets. Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, and Alma seemed to be relying on the allegory at several points in the elaboration of their own visions, prophecies, and teachings. This paper provides a systematic documentation of this phenomenon, including passages that have not previously been linked to Zenos. It also demonstrates how the interpretations of the allegory by the earliest Nephite prophets advanced distinctive concepts and language that also …

The Distant Triumph Song: Music And The Book Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester Jul 1992

The Distant Triumph Song: Music And The Book Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

Music plays a larger role in the book of Revelation than in any other book of the New Testament, and few books in all of Scripture have spawned more hymns sung in Christian worship today. Attention to how the hymnic material in Revelation would have sounded to the Christians who first heard it, to the place of these hymns in Revelation as a whole, and to their relation to the rest of Scripture can help revitalize the singing of the hymns these passages have inspired.

For The Renewal Of Repentence: The Lukan Texts In Lent, Gary M. Simpson Jan 1992

For The Renewal Of Repentence: The Lukan Texts In Lent, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

“When our lord and master Jesus Christ said, ‘repent,’ he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” With these opening words of Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses, the Reformation erupted on the western Christian world. The renewal of repentance has often energized God’s mission and ministry. For instance, one might recall the mission of the eighth-century Hebrew prophets or of John the Baptist or of Peter on Pentecost or even of Jesus himself. The Lukan texts for Lent (Series C) in their distinctive way proffer a renewal of repentance for mission and ministry today.

“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike Jan 1992

“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

A hypocoristicon is generally a single-element name resulting from the shortening of an originally longer one. Hebrew names and Semitic names in general, were often composed of two elements (or, as was often the case in Akkadian names and sometimes the case with West Semitic ones, three elements) which formed a nominal or verbal sentence.

Pentecost: Paul The Pastor In 2 Corinthians, David E. Fredrickson Apr 1991

Pentecost: Paul The Pastor In 2 Corinthians, David E. Fredrickson

Faculty Publications

To read 2 Corinthians is to watch a pastor at work. Paul practices, describes, defends, and commends to his audience his pastoral ministry. Something quite rare presents itself in this letter: an extended argument for the ministry of the gospel offered by a practitioner in the heat of the moment. My task is to disclose that heat. What does it mean to place pastoral practice at the center of the interpretation of Pauline epistles? Is this not anachronistic? There is indeed the danger of reading into the text what by habit has become pastoral practice in North America. Nevertheless, by …

The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester Jan 1991

The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

The story of the passion follows the upward movement of the pendulum. It begins with Jesus in the posture of a slave, washing his disciples’ feet (chap. 13); but concludes when Thomas recognizes that Jesus is both Lord and God (20:28), bringing the story back to the high point where it began in 1:1. Each year John’s passion account appears in the lectionary for Holy Week and his story of the resurrection is appointed for Easter and the Sunday after Easter, providing an opportunity for sustained reading and proclamation of these texts. John’s narrative is masterfully told; the drama is …

Adventist Doctrines And Progressive Revelation, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 1991

Adventist Doctrines And Progressive Revelation, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

Progressive revelation has played an important role in the development of the Seventh-day Adventist church and its theology. By “progressive revelation” I mean God’s continuous unfolding of prior revealed truth.1 Without such progressive revelation, the unfolding of inspired truth building on truth previously revealed and never denying it, the Seventh-day Adventist Church would not exist.

The Brass Plates Version Of Genesis, Noel B. Reynolds Mar 1990

The Brass Plates Version Of Genesis, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Phraseology occurring in Joseph Smith's "Book of Moses" matches Book of Mormon passages, but not the Bible. Given that the Book of Mormon claims a different source, the brass plates, this finding would be consistent with the conclusion that the Book of Moses and the brass plates versions of Genesis are more similar to each other than to the modern biblical version.

'The Savior Of The World' (John 4:42), Craig R. Koester Jan 1990

'The Savior Of The World' (John 4:42), Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4 draws on themes of Roman imperialism and Samaria’s colonial history. The Samaritan townspeople call Jesus “the Savior of the world” (4:42), a title used for Roman emperors from Julius Caesar to Hadrian. They go out to meet Jesus and welcome him to their town, a practice used to welcome emperors and other dignitaries. Using a title of empire-wide significance emphasizes that Jesus now transcends older national divisions. The Samaritan woman speaks as an individual and representative of her people. Her personal history with five husbands parallels her national history of colonization …

The Fourth Gospel In A Three-Year Lectionary, Craig R. Koester Jan 1990

The Fourth Gospel In A Three-Year Lectionary, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

The Gospel of John does not march in step with the other gospels. Perhaps this is why the framers of the three-year lectionary now used by many Christian churches found it so difficult to domesticate John. The readings from Matthew, Mark, and Luke proceed in measured pace, one gospel per year, while the Fourth Gospel appears sporadically throughout the lectionary, claiming a premier role on festival days, dominating the Easter season, and making occasional guest appearances. Yet since there is no “Year of John,” those who preach from the lectionary face the formidable task of capturing this “maverick” gospel without …

"Minor" Prophets In The Midst Of Pentecost, Mark A. Throntveit Jul 1989

"Minor" Prophets In The Midst Of Pentecost, Mark A. Throntveit

Faculty Publications

The Old Testament lessons for Pentecost 18, 19, and 20 are drawn from the works of two of the so-called minor prophets, Amos and Habakkuk. In our first passage, Amos 8:4-7(8), the dichotomy of faith and life—compartmentalized religion that sees no reason to let the understandings and experiences of worship affect the activities of the rest of life—comes to the fore. Our second passage, Amos 6:1-7, depicts the incongruity of the way of the affluent: lolling around Samaria, totally oblivious to the “ruin of Joseph” (Amos 6:6) or to the judgment that God will soon visit upon them by means …
