No Noose Is Good News: Leadership As A Theological Problem In The Corinthian Correspondence, David E. Fredrickson

Faculty Publications

The role of the leader implied by Paul’s Corinthian letters is to prepare persons for public participation in the gathered community. Paul portrays himself as the community’s slave, who thus makes others free for political participation.

New Light In The Last Days, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 1996

New Light In The Last Days, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

Progressive revelation has played an important role in the development of the Seventh-day Adventist church. By “progressive revelation” I mean God’s continuous unfolding of previously-revealed truth which we often refer to as “new light.” Without God’s shedding new light on His revealed Word--the Bible--the Seventh-day Adventist church would not exist.

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike Jan 1996

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

In this paper I examine the significance of the book of Numbers for the covenant community at Qumran. By way of background, I will relate the reason I chose this topic. My assignment as an editor of fragments for DJD is to prepare about sixty plates of miscellaneous and mainly unidentified fragments from Cave 4 at Qumran for publication. While some of these fragments have been identified and have been or will be published by others, I have well over 1,000 fragments with which to work. Most are quite small. Andrew Skinner, a colleague of mine at Brigham Young University, …

On The Verge Of The Millennium: A History Of The Interpretation Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester Apr 1995

On The Verge Of The Millennium: A History Of The Interpretation Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

The power of a book can be seen in its effects, and few books have had more dramatic effects than Revelation. Attempts to control the effects of the book by ignoring it or dismissing it have not been successful; Revela- tion’s secrets are too alluring. We do better to consider the effects the book has had on Christians over the centuries and to let this history of influence help shape a way to read the book that is both faithful and compelling.

Who Needs Doctrines? Jesus Is Coming!, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 1995

Who Needs Doctrines? Jesus Is Coming!, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

The name “Seventh-day Adventist” reveals the major characteristics of the remnant church, highlighting the importance of the Sabbath and the second advent. From time to time one hears the opinion that these are really all that matter and that all other doctrines or fundamental beliefs are really not that crucial. Over the years, it seems, doctrine has gotten a bad reputation. Some feel we harp too much on doctrine and not enough on love. Others feel doctrines don’t save, only Jesus does. Still others would intimate that doctrines make us “legalistic” and “behavior-oriented.”

The Sanctuary And Adventist Experience, P. Gerard Damsteegt Oct 1994

The Sanctuary And Adventist Experience, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

The essence of the sanctuary doctrine is its unique revelation of Christ's ministry of reconciliation for and in us, enabling us to experience His love, which we can share with others in unselfish and sacrificial service so they see a genuine revelation of Jesus as the only hope for humanity. It embraces our mental, spiritual, and physical attributes, and is designed to transform sinners into victorious people who are patiently yet actively awaiting the coming of their Savior. "Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus" (Rev. …

Inspiration Of The Scriptures In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Recently the subject of inspiration has received increasedattention among Seventh-day Adventists. A growing number ofbelievers are beginning to realize that one’s view of the inspirationof the Bible has far reaching implications for one’s daily decisionsand lifestyle.Ellen White sees an intimate connection between the true view of inspiration, the infallibility of the Scriptures and the absolute confidence in thetrustworthiness of its teachings. This, therefore, makes it ofparamount importance for church leaders to strive to uphold thetrue Biblical teaching of inspiration. It is vital to the believers’possession of the assurance of salvation and the effectiveness oftheir mission.

The Seal Of God, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 1994

The Seal Of God, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

Deep in the Adventist theology of last-day happenings is a predicted development which portends the destiny of all living persons. We have heard it preached from pulpits for years—people will receive either the mark of the beast or the seal of God. This is the outcome of the third angels message, the great showdown of the great controversy.

Seals And Sealing Among Ancient And Latter-Day Israelites, Dana M. Pike Jan 1994

Seals And Sealing Among Ancient And Latter-Day Israelites, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

When a Latter-day Saint encounters the terms seal and sealing, thoughts of temples and eternal marriage come immediately to mind. In a more secular context, we may look for the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" when purchasing certain products, and we obtain a notary's seal on important documents. What we may not realize is that our use of secular seals and our religious concepts of sealing have a history that can be traced back several thousands of years to the ancient Near East. Knowledge of the history of seals and sealing helps us to understand the figurative use of these …

The Bible, Congregational Leaders, And Moral Conversation, Patrick R. Keifert Oct 1993

The Bible, Congregational Leaders, And Moral Conversation, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

No matter how old an observation, it remains nonetheless true: We tend to remember the preacher more than the sermon, the teacher more than the lecture. Perhaps that is all we have recently learned in a preliminary study of twelve congregations in the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (SW Synod). However, there are some nuances that raise very important questions for theological education in seminaries and congregations—and, even more important, insights for the role of leaders and their use of Scripture in the moral conversations within congregations. In short, we have found from dozens of …
