Recent work by anthropologists, folklorists, and semioticians has made significant strides in our understanding of the dynamics and poetics of spoken utterances. Such work has been motivated, generally, by the goal of understanding verbal expression in terms of its own unique structures and expressive modalities. The following paper will contribute to this line of inquiry. It offers an analysis of a form of expression, sound symbolism, that is widely used by people whose languages have not been written down. The main advantage of this analysis is that it rescues sound symbolism from the irrational abyss into which it has often …

Alu elements are a family of interspersed repeats that have mobilized throughout primate genomes by retroposition from a few 'master' genes. Among the 500,000 Alu elements in the human genome are members of the human- specific subfamily that are not fixed in the human species; that is, not all chromosomes carry an Alu element at a particular locus. Four such polymorphic human-specific Alu insertions were analyzed by a rapid, PCR-based assay that uses primers that flank the insertion point to determine genotypes based on the presence or absence of the Alu element. These four polymorphic Alu insertions were shown to …

Stature Change In Prehistoric Maya Of The Southern Lowlands, Marie E. Danforth
Stature Change In Prehistoric Maya Of The Southern Lowlands, Marie E. Danforth
Faculty Publications
Since the 1950s, a decline in stature has been offered as evidence of increasing nutritional stress in prehistoric Maya populations, particularly during the Late Classic collapse. A review of the extant skeletal data, however, reveals very inconsistent support for such a decline. The primary explanation for the variation may reside in the small number of skeletal series that have representatives of more than one time period. Other possible explanations include methodological problems associated with stature reconstruction, reliability in sex determination, and variation in health response according to site size and location.

Discusses the development from the 1960s to the 1980s of writings by the Kenyan author and activist Ngugi wa Thiong'o, examines some of the difficulty Us- and European-based critics have found with Nugi's work from the 1980s, and argues that courses in African literature need to move beyond the established canon of the immediate post-Independence period to reflect more recent developments. Works discussed include Ngugi's novels Devil on the Cross and Matigari. Originally presented at the Southeast Regional Symposium for African Studies, Athens, Georgia, 1994

Health patterns in the Pueblo III (A.D. 1100-1225) population from Carter Ranch Pueblo were investigated in skeletal remains from 34 individuals. Childhood health disruptions were assessed using stature, linear enamel hypoplasias, and Harris lines. Periostitis, arthritis, anemia, trauma, and dental pathology were also observed. Although the low juvenile representation is probably an effect of age-biased mortuary practices, results suggest a healthy population compared to larger southwestern sites. Trauma levels at the site are quite high, possibly indicating burial practices differentiated on the ability to work or other health criteria. Additionally, a number of genetic anomalies are present, suggesting an isolated …

The Semantics Of Certainty In Quechua And Its Implications For A Cultural Epistemology, Janis B. Nuckolls
The Semantics Of Certainty In Quechua And Its Implications For A Cultural Epistemology, Janis B. Nuckolls
Faculty Publications
This article contributes to attempts on the part of Quechua scholars to understand the evidential system of this language family, and thereby paves the way for a more complex understanding of Quechua speakers' language and culture. The author opposes the position that the most general meaning of the -mi suffix is to indicate a direct or first-hand experience; and she holds that specific claims about Quechua speakers' epistemological orientations, based on such an analysis, cannot be supported. Evidence from speakers' use of -mi indicates that it encodes two paradigmatic contrasts: one is status-like or modal, the other evidential. The patterning …
Rule Of Law In Legal And Economic Theory, Noel B. Reynolds
Rule Of Law In Legal And Economic Theory, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
Legal positivism, the leading version of legal theory, has shown that a concentration on the meanings and logical relations of legal concepts, however much supplemented by intuition, common sense and legal experience, is not adequate to make full sense out of the human experience of law, and the traditional understandings of legal obligation and rule of law in particular. However, modern economic science has advanced a radically individualistic theoretical approach which has propelled economics to the fore as the most successful of the social sciences. And its basic theoretical stance is proving both attractive and adaptable to all the other …

“The social sciences should not exist. And I'm grateful that there are people in the social sciences working to destroy them.” This statement might easily be dismissed as rash and unjustified were the author not a world-class scholar, the quality of whose life-long study serves as an invitation to consider his reasons for making such a declaration. If, in the end, we cannot concur with Dr. Arthur Henry King's verdict on the ultimate value of the social sciences, might not his analysis of its problems give us a new perspective from which we might reevaluate it? Perhaps there is something …

Information about whose knowledge is accepted as important is valuable in understanding how a profession evolves. The term elders describes the individuals who control invisible networks of prestige and who determine what information is accepted for publication in professional journals. These published works stand as the foundation for the knowledge base of a discipline. The purpose of this article was to identify the elders in physical education teacher education (PETE) and to trace their academic genealogy. Elders were defined as major contributors to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education from 1981 through 1989. The articles published by these subjects …
Sound Symbolic Involvement, Janis B. Nuckolls
Sound Symbolic Involvement, Janis B. Nuckolls
Faculty Publications
This article examines an iconic form of communication, sound symbolism, which has been associated with oral cultures and implicated in paradigms of primitive mentality, I argue that Lowland Ecuadorean Quechua speakers use sound symbolic iconicity to create interlocutionary involvement. A speaker's performative foregrounding of a sound symbolic form simuhtes the salient qualities of an action, event, or process, and thereby invites a listener to project into an experience. This projected involvement, in turn, points the listener to deeper kinds of imaginative, intellectual, and emotional engagement with the narrative. The argument is based on an analysis of the formal and semantic …

Wife Abuse And The Political System: A Middle Eastern Case Study, Mary E. Hegland

Although wife abuse is common in Iran, it is a subject which has received almost no attention from scholars and little has been written on it. The purpose of this article is to examine the problem, to show the connection between wife-beating and the Iranian political system, and to raise questions for further research. The data on which this analysis is based come from my own research as well as from published sources. The two case histories of wife abuse presented exemplify social process in a political system characterized by arbitrariness and the need to dominate. The degree to which …
If . . .: Counterfactuals In The Law, Robert N. Strassfeld
If . . .: Counterfactuals In The Law, Robert N. Strassfeld
Faculty Publications
This Article considers some of the uses of counterfactuals in the law. Counterfactuals are a type of conditional statement. Conditional statements express the idea that something is or will be the case (the consequent), provided that some other situation is realized (the antecedent). Conditionals often take the form "if p then q", Counterfactuals are conditionals in which the author expresses the knowledge or belief that the antecedent is false.

Craft Specialization And Exchange Among The Virgin Anasazi, James R. Allison
Craft Specialization And Exchange Among The Virgin Anasazi, James R. Allison
Faculty Publications
A large proportion of the culinary ceramics found on 11th century Anasazi sites in the Moapa Valley of Nevada were manufactured more that fifty miles to the east, in northwestern Arizona. This paper uses analyses of ceramics from sites in southeastern Nevada, northwestern Arizona, and southwestern Utah to more precisely define the regional distribution of these ceramics and to assess their degree of standardization in form and technology. Questions relating to the development of community specialization and interaction in egalitarian societies are--examined in light of these analyses.
