Curricular Approaches To Developing Positive Interethnic Relations, Rosemary C. Henze Jan 1999

Curricular Approaches To Developing Positive Interethnic Relations, Rosemary C. Henze

Faculty Publications

This article examines whether and in what ways curricular approaches can be helpful in building positive interethnic relations in a large, ethnically diverse high school. Through this case study of curricular reform, the author documents four curricular approaches teacher leaders used to explicitly address issues of race and ethnicity and explores the impact of these approaches on student learning. By tracing the process of curricular change, the case illuminates how teacher leaders and administrators created the conditions for these curricular reforms to be sustainable.

The Case For Sound Symbolism, Janis B. Nuckolls Jan 1999

The Case For Sound Symbolism, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

proposal that linguistic sounds such as phonemes, features, syllables, or tones can be meaningful, or sound-symbolic, contradicts the principles of arbitrariness and double articulation that are axiomatic to structural linguistics. Nevertheless, a considerable body of research that supports principles of sound symbolism has accumulated. This review discusses the most widely attested forms of sound symbolism and the research programs linked to sound symbolism that have influenced linguists and anthropologists most. Numerous reports of magnitude sound symbolism in the form of experimental studies and comparative surveys have been integrated into a biologically based theory of its motivation. Magnitude sound symbolism also …

Annotated Bibliography Of Research In The Teaching Of English, Deborah Brown, Melissa Whiting, Richard L. Larson

Faculty Publications

Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June, 1998, for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related studies that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your suggestions …

What Is School For? Dilemmas Of Secondary Education In Bush Alaska, Lawrence C. Hamilton Aug 1998

What Is School For? Dilemmas Of Secondary Education In Bush Alaska, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Faculty Publications

The remote towns and villages of bush Alaska confront dilemmas in the design of secondary education. Systems based on a single statewide boarding school, or alternatively on small schools in each individual community, have both been tried. Debates about these two approaches reflect a more basic question: What is the purpose of secondary education? Should it (A) prepare students to become functional members of their home communities, or (B) prepare them to compete for education and jobs elsewhere? This question has implications for all aspects of educational design, and indeed for the future of rural villages themselves.

A paper presented …

The Trinity And Congregational Planning: Between Historical Minimum And Eschatological Maximum, Patrick R. Keifert Jul 1998

The Trinity And Congregational Planning: Between Historical Minimum And Eschatological Maximum, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

Most members of congregations are inattentive to both the past and the future of their congregation. They live in a very present now. An adequate doctrine of the Trinity can liberate congregations from this imprisonment in the present; it will call for visioning and planning in congregational life.

Moral and experiential monotheism, twin bequests of the enlightenment, have robbed recent doctrines of God of an essential apostolic difference. A revisioned formulation of the Trinity will provide good news for the modern world.

Patterns of gene differences among humans contain information about the demographic history of our species. Haploid loci like mitochondrial DNA and the nonrecombining part of the Y chromosome show a pattern indicating expansion from a population of only several thousand during the late middle or early upper Pleistocene. Nuclear short tandem repeat loci also show evidence of this expansion. Both mitochondrial DNA and the Y chromosome coalesce within the last several hundred thousand years, and they cannot provide information about the population before their coalescence. Several nuclear loci are informative about our ancestral population size during nearly the whole Pleistocene. …

During revolutions, rebellions, and movements, women are often called on to serve contradictory roles. They are asked to perform workpolitical, communicative, networking, recruiting, military, manual - that generally goes beyond the society's usual gender restrictions. At the same time, women serve as symbols of movement identity, unity, commitment, and righteous entitlement. To fit into this idealized symbolic image, individual women must fulfill often "traditional" or even exaggerated "feminine" behavioral and attitudinal requirements, such as loyalty, obedience, selflessness, sacrifice, and "proper" deportment: all in all, they are to put aside any personal aspirations and wishes for self-fulfillment and give their all …

We analyzed the European genetic contribution to 10 populations of African descent in the United States (Maywood, Illinois; Detroit; New York; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; New Orleans; and Houston) and in Jamaica, using nine autosomal DNA markers. These markers either are population-specific or show frequency differences >45% between the parental populations and are thus especially informative for admixture. European genetic ancestry ranged from 6.8% (Jamaica) to 22.5% (New Orleans). The unique utility of these markers is reflected in the low variance associated with these admixture estimates (SEM 1.3%-2.7%). We also estimated the male and female European contribution to …

Genetic Evidence For The Proto-Austronesian Homeland In Asia: Mtdna And Nuclear Dna Variation In Taiwanese Aboriginal Tribes, Terry Melton, Stephanie Clifford, Jeremy Martinson, Mark Batzer, Mark Stoneking Jan 1998

Genetic Evidence For The Proto-Austronesian Homeland In Asia: Mtdna And Nuclear Dna Variation In Taiwanese Aboriginal Tribes, Terry Melton, Stephanie Clifford, Jeremy Martinson, Mark Batzer, Mark Stoneking

Faculty Publications

Previous studies of mtDNA variation in indigenous Taiwanese populations have suggested that they held an ancestral position in the spread of mtDNAs throughout Southeast Asia and Oceania (Melton et al. 1995; Sykes et al. 1995), but the question of an absolute proto-Austronesian homeland remains. To search for Asian roots for indigenous Taiwanese populations, 28 mtDNAs representative of variation in four tribal groups (Ami, Atayal, Bunun, and Paiwan) were sequenced and were compared with each other and with mtDNAs from 25 other populations from Asia and Oceania. In addition, eight polymorphic Alu insertion loci were analyzed, to determine if the pattern …

During the austral summer of 1993-94 a number of 1-2 m deep snow pits were sampled in connection with firn-coring in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The traverse went from 800 to about 3000 m a.s.l. upon the high-altitude plateau. Profiles of cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+), anions (Cl−, NO3-, SO4 2- , CH3SO3 −) and stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) from 11 snow pils are presented here. Close to the coast 2 m of snow accumulates in about 2-3 years, whilst at sites on the high-altitude plateau 2 m of snow accumulates in 10—14 years. The spatial variation in ion …

Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture by Henry Jenkins. New York: Routledge, 1992. viii + 343 pp. $95.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-415-90571-8; $38.95 (paper), ISBN 978-0-415-90572-5.

In Textual Poachers, Henry Jenkins examines the underground world of the media fandom, people who create fiction, artwork, and other forms of expression based on television shows. Drawing on a rich theoretical background with sources ranging from feminist literary criticism to cultural anthropology, Jenkins applies and adapts Michel de Certeau's model of "poaching," in which an audience appropriates a text for itself. Taking a stand against the stereotypical portrayal of fans as obsessive …

Changes In Network Characteristics And Hiv Risk Behavior Among Injection Drug Users, John P. Hoffmann, S. Susan Su, Alfred Pach Jun 1997

Changes In Network Characteristics And Hiv Risk Behavior Among Injection Drug Users, John P. Hoffmann, S. Susan Su, Alfred Pach

Faculty Publications

Studies indicate that HIV risk behaviors vary greatly among injection drug users (IDUs). The source of such variation is often ascribed to individual differences, but much of it is due to how IDUs are grouped into social networks. Nevertheless, given the turbulent and uncertain lives led by many IDUs, it would not be surprising if their social networks changed substantially over time. We used data from a study of the social networks of IDUs in Chicago and Washington, DC, to examine changes in individual behavior and network characteristics over time. The results indicated few changes in standard network measures, such …
