Ultimobranchial Thyroid Neoplasms In Bulls. A Syndrome Resembling Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma In Man, Hugh E. Black, Charles C. Capen, David M. Young
Ultimobranchial Thyroid Neoplasms In Bulls. A Syndrome Resembling Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma In Man, Hugh E. Black, Charles C. Capen, David M. Young
Faculty Publications
A syndrome of ultimobranchial thyroid neoplasms which shares many similarities with medullary thyroid carcinoma in man occurs frequently in populations of adult bulls. The results of this investigation demonstrated that ultimobranchial neoplasms were composed of poorly differentiated parafollicular (C—) cells with extensive aggregations of microfilaments, clusters of ribosomes, and prominent Golgi apparatuses. Secretion granules often were interspersed between microfilaments. Other more columnar neoplastic cells assumed a ductal pattern. The prominent stroma contained amyloid fibrils and collagen fibers. By comparison, cells comprising medullary thyroid carcinoma were more differentiated parafollicular cells with well developed cytoplasmic organelles and numerous membrane‐limited secretion granules. Calcitonin …

A Critical Guide To Ex Parte Mccardle, William W. Van Alstyne

Given the growing trend of proposed Congressional bills seeking to remove certain types of cases from the Supreme Court's appellate jurisdiction, this examination looks back on Ex Parte McCardle, the quintessential case that defined the limits of the Exceptions Clause.

Wells And Streams: Relationship At Law, Peter N. Davis
Wells And Streams: Relationship At Law, Peter N. Davis

Groundwater constitutes one of the major sources of water for municipalities, irrigators, and rural dwellers. Conflicts between groundwater users are bound to arise from time to time, as is evidenced by a recent Missouri case, Higday v. Nickolaus, discussed elsewhere in this issue.' Such conflicts may increase in frequency in the future as the demand for groundwater increases. Although a majority of cases will involve allocation of groundwater between users of that class of water, many groundwater diversion cases will involve adverse effects on the flow of water in streams. It is –to the latter situation that this article is …

Effects Of Feeding And Mating On Pheromone Release In The Southern Pine Beetle, Jack E. Coster, J.P. Vite`
Effects Of Feeding And Mating On Pheromone Release In The Southern Pine Beetle, Jack E. Coster, J.P. Vite`
Faculty Publications
Response of field populations of Delldroetoll1lS frontalis Zimmermann to their aggregating pheromone was correlated with pheromone content of dissectted hindgut tissues of adult beetles a determined by the gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) technique. Adult beetles in various stages of feeding activity and reproductive states were used for this purpose. Two major components of the aggregating pheromones, frontalin and trans-verbenol, were found in the largest quantities in emergent unfed females. After 48 hours of feeding, frontal in content of the hindguts was 29% and trans-verbeno content was only 5% of that of emergent females. Continuous bioassays of females feeding in host material …
Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Enhancement Of Progressive‐Ratio Performance By Chlordiazepoxide And Phenobarbital, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
The key pecking of two pigeons was reinforced with food on a progressive‐ratio schedule, which required an increasing number of responses for each successive reinforcement: 8, 16, 24, 32, etc. When the subject failed to complete the next ratio in the sequence within 60 min, the session terminated. The number of responses in the final completed ratio was defined as the “breaking point”. After the breaking point had stabilized (60 sessions), it served as a baseline to assess the effects of varying doses (5 to 80 mg/kg) of chlordiazepoxide and phenobarbital, administered intramuscularly 30 min before the sessions. Both drugs …

Theories Of Water Pollution Litigation, Peter N. Davis
Theories Of Water Pollution Litigation, Peter N. Davis
Faculty Publications
The common law has traditionally provided the rules that govern relationships among landowners in their use of watercourses. These rules are embodied in the eastern United States in the doctrine of riparian rights, which addresses itself both to water quantity, and to water quality. Persons complaining of pollution of waters abutting their lands have, in addition to redress by complaint to the state pollution control agency, redress by lawsuit against the alleged polluter. This common law supplements the body of statutory law regulating the waters of the state for the benefit of the people.

Calcitonin Activity In Ultimobranchial Neoplasms From Bulls, D. M. Young, C. C. Capen, H. E. Black

Ultimobranchial neoplasms from 5 bulls (hat were extracted and assayed individually contained approximately 68% as much calcitonin activity (452 ± 68 MRC mU/g) as thyroid glands from control bulls (663 ± 165 MRC mU/g). These results were consistent with the ultrastructural finding that thyroid neoplasms in old bulls were composed of primitive ultimobranchial cells which contained few mature secretory granules characteristic of parafollicular (C-) cells. Significant difference in calcitonin concentration was not detected between thyroid glands of control cows (617 ± 106 MRC mU/g) and bulls without ultimobranchial neoplasms. © 1971, American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Repeated Acquisition As A Behavioral Baseline, Donald M. Thompson
Repeated Acquisition As A Behavioral Baseline, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
The Boren (1963) technique for studying variables affecting acquisition with an individual-S design was modified and used with pigeons. The sensitivity and reversibility of the steady-state baseline were demonstrated by temporarily removing the different Stimuli correlated with the different members of the chain. This “tandem” probe produced a substantial increase in the number of learning errors. © 1970, Psychonomic Journals, Inc.. All rights reserved.

The discussion examines the current state of educators' rights and identifies two key areas that are still hotly contested: extramural utterances that my be critical of the institution itself and a teacher's freedom with his own classroom. A survey of two recent cases illuminates these issues.

Hormonal Regulation Of Lipolysis And Phosphorylase Activity In Human Fat Cells, Jay Moskowitz, John N. Fain
Hormonal Regulation Of Lipolysis And Phosphorylase Activity In Human Fat Cells, Jay Moskowitz, John N. Fain

A B S TR A C T Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) at a concentration of 1 ng/ml antagonized theophylline, and norepinephrine induced release of glycerol and free fatty acids (FFA) in human fat cell preparations. Insulin at higher doses also inhibited theophylline-stimulated lipolysis. The N6-2-O'dibutyryl derivative of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (DCAMP) stimulated lipolysis. Prostaglandin E1 did not significantly inhibit the lipid mobilizing effects of DCAMP. Changes in glycogen phosphorylase activity after treatment with theophylline, norepinephrine, DCAMP, and PGE1 paralleled those of lipolysis. These results suggest that in man as in experimental animals lipolysis …
