Eyespray Vaccination: Infectivity And Development Of Immunity To Eimeria Acervulina And Eimeria Tenella, H. David Chapman, Tim E. Cherry Jan 1997

Eyespray Vaccination: Infectivity And Development Of Immunity To Eimeria Acervulina And Eimeria Tenella, H. David Chapman, Tim E. Cherry

Faculty Publications

The infectivity of a coccidiosis vaccine and its ability to immunize chickens against two species of Eimeria was examined. The vaccine was administered to newly-hatched chicks by spraying directly onto the eye. The method resulted in a high proportion of chicks infected with E. acervulina and E. tenella. Vaccinated birds reared in cages in the absence of reinfection did not develop immunity to either species by 4 wk of age, but birds reared in floor pens developed immunity to both E. acervulina and E. tenella.

Robert Mcnamara And The Art And Law Of Confession: ‘A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert Mcnamara’D Into Submission)’, Robert N. Strassfeld

Faculty Publications

This Article examines McNamara's "confession" and the public response to it within the context of an American tradition of confession in law and literature. Part I traces that tradition to the criminal conversion narratives and gallows speeches of colonial New England. Puritan society had clear expectations of what it took to make a good confession, and the Article identifies these rules for confession. It also examines the functions of confession in that society and argues that these confessions had several social consequences, including easing the consciences of those implicated in the criminal's punishment; bolstering civil and religious authority; warning the …

The Human Homolog Of A Mouse-Imprinted Gene, Peg3, Maps To A Zinc Finger Gene-Rich Region Of Human Chromosome 19q13.4, J. Kim, L. Ashworth, E. Branscomb, L. Stubbs Jan 1997

The Human Homolog Of A Mouse-Imprinted Gene, Peg3, Maps To A Zinc Finger Gene-Rich Region Of Human Chromosome 19q13.4, J. Kim, L. Ashworth, E. Branscomb, L. Stubbs

Faculty Publications

Peg3 (paternally expressed gene 3) is the first imprinted gene detected in the proximal region of mouse chromosome 7. Because imprinting is a trait that is generally conserved among mammals, and imprinted domains generally encompass several adjacent genes, expression patterns and chromosomal environment of the human counterpart of Peg3 are of special interest. In this study we have localized human PEG3 ~ 2 Mb proximal of the telomere of chromosome 19q, within a region known to carry large numbers of tandemly clustered Kruppel-type zinc finger-containing (ZNF) genes. Peg3 also encodes a Kruppel-type ZNF protein but one that is distinguished from …

Direct and indirect effects of diesel-contaminated sediment on microalgae, meiofauna, and meiofauna-microalgae trophic interactions were examined in a microcosm study of the sediment community from a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh. Microcosms of natural sediment were given small dally doses of contaminated sediment over a 28-d period, creating low-, medium-, and high-diesel treatment concentrations of ~ 0.5, 5.5, and 55 ppm PAH, respectively. Diesel caused initial (within 7 h) reductions in microalgal grazing by meiobenthic harpacticoid copepods. Over longer periods of exposure (7-28 d), grazing on microalgae by copepods as a group was reduced in high-diesel treatments, primarily because of high …

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K Is Not Essential For Infectious Virus Production In Actively Replicating Cells But Is Required For Efficient Envelopment And Translocation Of Infectious Virions From The Cytoplasm To The Extracellular Space, Sukhanya Jayachandra, Abolghasem Baghian, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

We characterized the glycoprotein K (gK)-null herpes simplex virus type 1 [HSV-1] (KOS) ΔgK and compared it to the gK-null virus HSV-1 F-gKβ (L. Hutchinson et al., J. Virol. 69:5401-5413, 1995). Δgk and F-gKβ mutant viruses produced small plaques on Vero cel monolayers at 48 h postinfection. F-gKβ caused extensive fusion of 143TK cells that was sensitive to melittin, a specific inhibitor of gK-induced cell fusion, while ΔgK virus did not fuse 143TK cells. A recombinant plasmid containing the truncated gK gene specified by F-gKβ failed to rescue the ICP27-null virus KOS (d27-1), while a plasmid with the ΔgK deletion …

Development Of A Protein-Free Chemically Defined Culture Medium For The Propagation Of The Oyster Pathogen Perkinsus Marinus, J. F. La Peyre, M. Faisal

Faculty Publications

In the present study we describe a protein-free, chemically defined culture medium, designated JL-ODRP-3, which supports the propagation of Perkinsus marinus, a parasite of the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica. P. marinus adapted rapidly to the defined medium and the growth rate of the protozoan increased significantly following a few subcultures. Two isolates of P. marinus, one from the Chesapeake Bay (Virginia) and the other from the Gulf of Mexico (Texas) were cultured for at least ten passes. The doubling times for the isolates from Virginia and Texas, in log phase, were 18 ± 1.2 and 28.6 ± 3.2 hours respectively, …

Transgenic Dairy Cattle: Genetic Engineering On A Large Scale, R. J. Wall, D. E. Kerr, K. R. Bondioli Jan 1997

Transgenic Dairy Cattle: Genetic Engineering On A Large Scale, R. J. Wall, D. E. Kerr, K. R. Bondioli

Faculty Publications

Amid the explosion of fundamental knowledge generated from transgenic animal models, a small group of scientists has been producing transgenic livestock with goals of improving animal production efficiency and generating new products. The ability to modify mammary-specific genes provides an opportunity to pursue several distinctly different avenues of research. The objective of the emerging gene "pharming" industry is to produce pharmaceuticals for treat-ing human diseases. It is argued that mammary glands are an ideal site for producing complex bioactive proteins that can be cost effectively harvested and purified. Consequently, during the past decade, approximately a dozen companies have been created …

Attenuation, Persistence, And Vaccine Potential Of An Edwardsiella Ictaluri Pura Mutant, Mark L. Lawrence, Richard K. Cooper, Ronald L. Thune

Faculty Publications

In this study, an adenine-auxotrophic strain of Edwardsiella ictaluri was constructed and its virulence, tissue persistence, and vaccine efficacy were evaluated. A clone containing the purA gene was isolated from an E. ictaluri genomic library, sequenced, and shown to have an overall sequence identity of 79.3% at the nucleotide level and 85.7% at the amino acid level with the Escherichia coli purA gene. The cloned E. ictaluri purA gene was mutated by deleting a 598-bp segment of the gene and inserting the kanamycin resistance gene from TraP03 into the gap. The ApurA::Km(r) gene was subcloned into the suicide plasmid pGP704, …

Primo Levi, Ilona Klein Jan 1997

Primo Levi, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Chemistry and literature, viewed by most people as widely different subjects, come together in the works of Primo Levi, an Italian Jew who was both a professional chemist and a professional writer. Levi said that he wanted to fill the gap between the imaginative world of literature and the analytical world of science. Believing such a gap absurd, he was never daunted by the purported incompatibility between the two fields of knowledge. Levi's literary work is also marked by his experience in Auschwitz's concentration camp, where he was interned from February 1944 to January 1945. Through his characteristically clear and …

Effects Of Environmental Sodium Chloride On Percent Hatch, Yolk Utilization, And Survival Of Channel Catfish Fry, C. R. Weirich, T. R. Tiersch Jan 1997

Effects Of Environmental Sodium Chloride On Percent Hatch, Yolk Utilization, And Survival Of Channel Catfish Fry, C. R. Weirich, T. R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Only limited research has addressed the effect of salinity on hatching of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus eggs, and no studies have evaluated the effect of salinity on fry development and survival. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of environmental sodium chloride (0, 1, 2, and 4 g/L NaCl) on percent hatch, yolk utilization, and survival of channel catfish fry. Experiments were conducted in recirculating systems using seven egg masses (1-2 d old). Each egg mass was divided into smaller portions which remained undissociated or were dissociated with sodium sulfite (NaSO3). Eggs were incubated until hatching. Wet and dry …

Health Care Cost Containment And Medical Technology: A Critique Of Waste Theory, Maxwell J. Mehlman Jan 1997

Health Care Cost Containment And Medical Technology: A Critique Of Waste Theory, Maxwell J. Mehlman

Faculty Publications

The high cost of health care has led to proposals to reduce wasteful medical technology under Medicare and other payment systems. Professor Mehlman warns that achieving this objective, while laudable in theory, is problematic because of the difficulties of defining, detecting and eliminating technology waste. A particular danger is that, in an effort to reduce waste, patients will be denied not only technologies that are wasteful from the patient's own perspective but technologies that yield net patient benefit. This risk is exacerbated by the Medicare prospective payment system, which rewards hospitals financially in inverse proportion to the amount of care …

Disparate Effects In The Criminal Justice System: A Response To Randall Kennedy's Comment And Its Legacy, Janai S. Nelson Jan 1997

Disparate Effects In The Criminal Justice System: A Response To Randall Kennedy's Comment And Its Legacy, Janai S. Nelson

Faculty Publications

For many African Americans, the criminal justice system symbolizes an oppressive force, and yet, is a necessary institution in an increasingly lawless society. African Americans are at the same time its victims and beneficiaries, although various sentiments exist regarding the extent to which they are either. It is precisely this paradox, coupled with the promulgation of certain criminal legislation and legal precedent which directly and, potentially, adversely affect the African-American community that inspired the author to address the issues and arguments raised in Randall Kennedy's The State, Criminal Law, and Racial Discrimination: A Comment, 107 Harv. L. Rev. 1255 (1994), …

Genetics, Iq, Determinism, And Torts: The Example Of Discovery In Lead Exposure Litigation, Jennifer Wriggins Jan 1997

Genetics, Iq, Determinism, And Torts: The Example Of Discovery In Lead Exposure Litigation, Jennifer Wriggins

Faculty Publications

This article discusses a disturbing development in tort litigation in which defendants use deterministic, genetics-based ideas about individuals and their families to undercut and deflect attention from personal injury claims. Lead exposure litigation involving cognitive injuries claimed on behalf of children who have ingested lead paint is the context of this development. The most extreme manifestation to date has been the efforts in several states to compel relatives of lead-exposed children (usually mothers) to have IQ and psychological testing, even though they are not parties to the litigation. Rule 35 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and its state …

Price Theory And Vertical Restraints: A Misunderstood Relation, Alan J. Meese Jan 1997

Price Theory And Vertical Restraints: A Misunderstood Relation, Alan J. Meese

Faculty Publications

The Chicago School of antitrust analysis has exerted a strong influence over the law of vertical restraints in the past two decades, leading the Supreme Court to abandon much of its traditional hostility toward such agreements. Chicago's success has provoked a vigorous response from Populists, who support the traditional approach. Chicago, Populists claim, has improperly relied upon neoclassical price theory to inform the normative and descriptive assumptions that drive its analysis of trade restraints generally and of vertical restraints in particular. This reliance is misplaced, Populists assert, because the real world departs from that portrayed by price-theoretic models and, at …
