Hydrostatic Pressure Alters The Time Course Of Gtp[S] Binding To G Proteins In Brain Membranes From Two Congeneric Marine Fishes, Joseph F. Siebenaller, Thomas F. Murray Jan 1999

Hydrostatic Pressure Alters The Time Course Of Gtp[S] Binding To G Proteins In Brain Membranes From Two Congeneric Marine Fishes, Joseph F. Siebenaller, Thomas F. Murray

Faculty Publications

The effects of hydrostatic pressure on the receptor-stimulated exchange of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) for guanosine diphosphate (GDP) on the α subunit of G proteins were studied in two congeneric marine teleost fishes that differ in their depths of distribution. The poorly hydrolyzable GTP analog [35S]guanosine 5'-[γ-thio]triphosphate ([35S]GTP[S]) was used to monitor the modulation of signal transduction by the A(I) adenosine receptor agonist N6-R-(phenylisopropyl)adenosine (R-PIA) in brain membranes of the scorpaenids Sebastolobus alascanus and S. altivelis. The maximal binding (B(max)) and dissociation constant (K(d)) values, determined from equilibrium binding isotherms at atmospheric pressure (5°C), were similar in the two species. The …

Perkinsus Marinus Extracellular Protease Modulates Survival Of Vibrio Vulnificus In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Hemocytes, B. D. Tall, J. F. La Peyre, J. W. Bier, M. D. Miliotis, D. E. Hanes, M. H. Kothary, D. B. Shah, M. Faisal

Faculty Publications

The in vitro effects of the Perkinsus marinus serine protease on the intracellular survival of Vibrio vulnificus in oyster hemocytes were examined by using a time-course gentamicin internalization assay. Results showed that protease-treated hemocytes were initially slower to internalize V. vulnificus than untreated hemocytes. After 1 h, the elimination of K vulnificus by treated hemocytes was significantly suppressed compared with hemocytes infected with invasive and noninvasive controls. Our data suggest that the serine protease produced by P. marinus suppresses the vibriocidal activity of oyster hemocytes to effectively eliminate V. vulnificus, potentially leading to conditions favoring higher numbers of vibrios in …

Use Of Western Immunoblot Analysis For Testing Moose Serum For Brucella Suis Biovar 4 Specific Antibodies, Matthew D. Edmonds, Felicia M. Ward, Todd M. O'Hara, Philip H. Elzer Jan 1999

Use Of Western Immunoblot Analysis For Testing Moose Serum For Brucella Suis Biovar 4 Specific Antibodies, Matthew D. Edmonds, Felicia M. Ward, Todd M. O'Hara, Philip H. Elzer

Faculty Publications

To determine if 12 moose (Alces alces) from northern Alaska with agglutinating antibodies specific for Brucella spp. had been exposed to either B. suis biovar 4 or B. abortus biovar 1, western immunoblot serologic analysis was performed. Differential serologic responses to strain specific A and M antigenic variances of the lipopolysaccharide O-polysaccharide sugar allowed strain identification. Prior to examination, test sera were absorbed with killed whole cells from either B. abortus biovar 1, containing predominately A antigen (A+ M-); B. melitensis biovar 1, containing essentially M antigen (A-M+); or B. suis biovar 4, containing both antigenic types (A+ M+). The …

The Siderophore 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic Acid Is Not Required For Virulence Of Brucella Abortus In Balb/C Mice, Bryan H. Bellaire, Philip H. Elzer, Cynthia L. Baldwin, R. Martin Roop Jan 1999

The Siderophore 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic Acid Is Not Required For Virulence Of Brucella Abortus In Balb/C Mice, Bryan H. Bellaire, Philip H. Elzer, Cynthia L. Baldwin, R. Martin Roop

Faculty Publications

2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA) is the only siderophore described for Brucella, and previous studies suggested that DHBA might contribute to the capacity of these organisms to persist in host macrophages. Employing an isogenic siderophore mutant (ΔentC) constructed from virulent Brucella abortus 2308, however, we found that production of DHBA is not required for replication in cultured murine macrophages or for the establishment and maintenance of chronic infection in the BALB/c mouse model.

Faculty Publications

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of human cat scratch disease as well as several serious sequelae of infections, including bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis. Conflicting reports describe the pathogenesis of B. henselae in the cat. In this study, we characterized a strain of B. henselae termed LSU16. This strain was isolated on rabbit blood agar from a naturally infected 10-month-old female cat during a recurrent episode of bacteremia. The bacterial species was confirmed by PCR- restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Nine cats were infected intradermally with 5 x 107 CFU of LSU16, and clinical signs, antibody responses, and bacteremia …

Zim1, A Maternally Expressed Mouse Kruppel-Type Zinc-Finger Gene Located In Proximal Chromosome 7, Joomyeong Kim, Xiaochen Lu, Lisa Stubbs

Faculty Publications

In analysis of a conserved region of proximal mouse chromosome 7 and human chromosome 19q, we have isolated a novel mouse gene, Zim1 (imprinted zinc-finger gene 1), encoding a typical Kruppel-type (C2H2) zinc-finger protein, located within 30 kb of a known imprinted gene, Peg3 (paternally expressed gene 3). Our studies demonstrate that Zim1 is also imprinted; the gene is expressed mainly from the maternal allele and at high levels only during embryonic and neonatal stages. In contrast to most tissues, Zim1 is expressed biallelically in neonatal and adult brain with slightly more input from the maternal allele. Zim1 produces multiple …

Ferric Iron Reduction By Bacteria Associated With The Roots Of Freshwater And Marine Macrophytes, G. M. King, Meredith A. Garey Jan 1999

Ferric Iron Reduction By Bacteria Associated With The Roots Of Freshwater And Marine Macrophytes, G. M. King, Meredith A. Garey

Faculty Publications

In vitro assays of washed, excised roots revealed maximum potential ferric iron reduction rates of >100 μmol g (dry weight)-1 day-1 for three freshwater macrophytes and rates between 15 and 83 μmol (dry weight)-1 day-1 for two marine species. The rates varied with root morphology but not consistently (fine root activity exceeded smooth root activity in some but not all cases). Sodium molybdate added at final concentrations of 0.2 to 20 mM did not inhibit iron reduction by roots of marine macrophytes (Spartina alterniflora and Zostera marina). Roots of a freshwater macrophyte, Sparganium eurycarpum, that were incubated with an analog …

Physicochemical Influences On Parasites Of Age-0 Largemouth Bass In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Randy C. Landry, William E. Kelso

Faculty Publications

We investigated prevalence and intensity patterns of nine parasite taxa in 244 age-0 largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) collected from lake (high dissolved oxygen levels), riverine (high current velocities), and swamp (hypoxic canals and bayous) sites (N=6) in the Atchafalaya River Basin during the 1996 flood pulse. Ectoparasites were dominated by monogenetic trematodes (prevalence=100%; median intensities 27–91 per host) and glochidia (prevalence > 96% at all sites, median intensities 47–148 per host), whereas Posthodiplostomum minimum (Trematoda), Caecincola spp. (Trematoda; C. parvulus and perhaps C. latostoma), Neoechinorhynchus cylindratus (Acanthocephala), and Proteocephalus ambloplitis (Cestoda) accounted for 94.6% of bass endoparasites. Overall, lake sites supported …

Spoiling The Surprise: Constraints Facing Random Regulatory Inspections In Japan And The United States, Andrew Chin

Faculty Publications

This Article is organized as follows. Part I presents a rational actor model of legal compliance under an enforcement regime based on random inspections and identifies two classes of reforms that can be applied in combination to improve aggregate compliance. Part II introduces the problem of corrupt tip-offs into the model and argues that exogenous reforms are necessary to combat corruption. Part III surveys the use of random administrative inspections in the United States, reviews the approaches taken by four such programs to improve compliance and fight corruption, and describes the various constraints under which they must operate. Part IV …

The Case For Sound Symbolism, Janis B. Nuckolls Jan 1999

The Case For Sound Symbolism, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

proposal that linguistic sounds such as phonemes, features, syllables, or tones can be meaningful, or sound-symbolic, contradicts the principles of arbitrariness and double articulation that are axiomatic to structural linguistics. Nevertheless, a considerable body of research that supports principles of sound symbolism has accumulated. This review discusses the most widely attested forms of sound symbolism and the research programs linked to sound symbolism that have influenced linguists and anthropologists most. Numerous reports of magnitude sound symbolism in the form of experimental studies and comparative surveys have been integrated into a biologically based theory of its motivation. Magnitude sound symbolism also …

More Precious Than Gold: The Journey To And Through Zion In 1849-50, Fred E. Woods Jan 1999

More Precious Than Gold: The Journey To And Through Zion In 1849-50, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

The California gold rush, the first international gold rush in history, turned the world upside down, reaching its zenith in the years 1849-50. As a result of the rush during these two climactic years, the population swelled our nation's Pacific coast, entitling California to receive statehood in the fall of 1850. During these catalytic years, Latter-day Saints were journeying to the American West for a different kind of treasure. They gathered from afar to their Mormon mecca nestled in the Salt Lake Valley to fulfill their dreams of establishing Zion. Yet the California gold rush had a significant impact on …

Health-Promoting Properties Of Common Herbs, Winston J. Craig Jan 1999

Health-Promoting Properties Of Common Herbs, Winston J. Craig

Faculty Publications

Herbs have been used as food and for medicinal purposes for centuries. Research interest has focused on various herbs that possess hypolipidemic, antiplatelet, antitumor, or immune-stimulating properties that may be useful adjuncts in helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. In different herbs, a wide variety of active phytochemicals, including the flavonoids, terpenoids, lignans, sulfides, polyphenolics, carotenoids, coumarins, saponins, plant sterols, curcumins, and phthalides have been identified. Several of these phytochemicals either inhibit nitrosation or the formation of DNA adducts or stimulate the activity of protective enzymes such as the Phase II enzyme glutathione transferase (EC 2.5.1.18). Research …

Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger

Faculty Publications

Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to clarify the predatory role of Palaemonetes pugio Holthius in salt-marsh benthic communities. Field experiments (cage enclosures using P. pugio as a predator) were conducted on unvegetated mudflat and vegetated-marsh sites. Neither sediment- or stem-dwelling meiofaunal abundances were significantly impacted. Laboratory experiments measured the functional response of P. pugio feeding on suspended harpacticoid copepods, tested the efficiency of P. pugio feeding on harpacticoids in sediments, and measured the predation rate of P. pugio on stem-dwelling meiofauna. Grass shrimp feeding rate on suspended copepods followed a type II functional response, increasing with increasing prey density …

A Work Minimization Approach To Image Morphing, Peisheng Gao, Thomas W. Sederberg Dec 1998

A Work Minimization Approach To Image Morphing, Peisheng Gao, Thomas W. Sederberg

Faculty Publications

An algorithm is presented for morphing two images, often with little or no user interaction. For two similar images (such as different faces against a neutral background) the algorithm generally can create a pleasing morph completely automatically. The algorithm seeks the minimum work to deform one image into the other, where work is a function of the amount of warping and recoloration. A hierarchical method for finding a minimal work solution is invoked. Anchor point constraints are satisfied by imposing penalties on deformations that disobey these constraints. Good results can be obtained in less than ten seconds for 256 x …
