The Effects Of Hypoxia And Freshwater Intrusion On The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica), James Henry Gledhill
The Effects Of Hypoxia And Freshwater Intrusion On The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica), James Henry Gledhill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent estimates revealed a significant decrease in oyster populations worldwide. This drastic decrease has detrimental effects on coastal and estuarine ecosystems. Two environmental stressors that are thought to be contributing to the oyster population decline are hypoxia and excess freshwater intrusion. In this study, effects of hypoxia and low salinity on oysters were investigated using a combination of laboratory and field-based methods. In the laboratory, oysters were exposed to 2, 4, or 8 days of hypoxia (< 2 mg/L dissolved oxygen) folloby 6 days of recovery in normoxic conditions. At the same time, caged oysters were exposed to a naturally occurring hypoxic event in the field. After 8 days, laboratory-exposed oysters shoevidence of immunosuppression indicated by significant downregulation of the immune-related gene thymosin-β4 (Tβ-4) and a significant decrease in total circulating hemocytes compared to controls. However, in field oysters exposed to a naturally occurring hypoxic event, no effect on total hemocyte counts and an upregulation of Tβ-4 was observed. In a second field study, to investigate how oysters respond to prolonged freshwater exposure, caged oysters were placed on 23 April 2019 at six reef sites in the Mississippi Sound along with in situ water quality sensors. One-hundred percent mortality of caged oysters occurred at four of the six sites. Of the 6 six sites, Henderson Point Reef and Kittiwake Reef shosome caged oyster survival. At Henderson Point, where higher mortality was observed compared to Kittiwake, a significant increase in lipid peroxidation was detected. Analysis of mRNA expression of surviving caged and native oysters revealed downregulation of genes involved in immune function, low oxygen response, and osmoregulation. These results show possible evidence of energetic depression which inhibits adequate adaptation to low salinity conditions. Energetic depression and increased oxidative damage could have contributed to higher oyster mortality. Dredge sampling of native oysters at the all Mississippi Sound field sites on 27 September 2019, following recovery to ~15 ppt salinity, still indicated 100% native oyster mortality due to the prior prolonged freshwater exposure. Continued monitoring of western Mississippi Sound oyster reefs is crucial to observe recovery of oyster populations.

Examining The Moderating Effects Of Defendant Characteristics On The Relationship Between Crime Type And Prosecutorial Decision Making, Caitlin Marie Howley
Examining The Moderating Effects Of Defendant Characteristics On The Relationship Between Crime Type And Prosecutorial Decision Making, Caitlin Marie Howley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The concept of plea bargaining was not compractice until the nineteenth century (Langbein, 1978; Alschuler, 1979). Before that time, criminal defendants lacked representation in the court, leaving the judge to determine sentencing and punishment. Plea bargaining has become the prominent practice, with around 90% of cases, state and federal, resulting in a plea (Rabin, 1972; Lagoy, Senna, & Siegel, 1976; Alschuler, 1979; Alschuler, 1983; Scott & Stuntz, 1992; Schulhofer, 1992; Starkweather, 1992; Ross, 2006; Silveira, 2017). The concept of plea bargaining is inevitably accompanied by discretion, specifically prosecutorial discretion. Prosecutorial discretion grants prosecutors power in deciding what charges they would …

Behavioral Similarities And Differences Among Symptoms Of Emetophobia, Disordered Eating, And Disgust, Jennifer Arden Petell
Behavioral Similarities And Differences Among Symptoms Of Emetophobia, Disordered Eating, And Disgust, Jennifer Arden Petell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Emetophobia, also known as the specific phobia of vomiting (SPOV), is a clinical disorder with severe symptomatology and chronicity. However, there remains a significant lack of knowledge in overall conceptualization and etiological understanding. Recent literature has described this disorder within the context of abnormal eating disorders, despite the essential difference in symptom function between SPOV and disordered eating (Keyes & Veale, 2018; Volpe et al., 2015). Therefore, the present study sought to further the conceptualization and delineation of symptoms of emetophobia and disordered eating, as well as their potential relation with disgust. More specifically, it was hypothesized that symptoms of …
Civic Engagement Among Emerging Adults: Self-Efficacy, Purpose, And Program Experiences, Rachel Marsh
Civic Engagement Among Emerging Adults: Self-Efficacy, Purpose, And Program Experiences, Rachel Marsh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding how to cultivate civic mindedness and engagement in emerging adults is of central importance. Theories of positive youth development point to the importance of particular youth characteristics for promoting the development of successful and contributing citizens (Lerner, Almerigi, Theokas, & Lerner, 2005). Among these, self-efficacy, or one’s belief in their ability to perform a specific task, is considered essential (Bandura, 1977; DeWitz, 2004; Solhaug, 2006). Scholars have, more recently, pointed to the role of purpose as key for motivating civic engagement (Damon, Menon, & Cotton Bronk, 2003). Beyond youth characteristics, other scholars point to the importance of opportunities for …
High Voltage Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells And Molecular Photocatalysis For Co2 Reduction, Roberta Ramalho Rodrigues
High Voltage Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells And Molecular Photocatalysis For Co2 Reduction, Roberta Ramalho Rodrigues
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The development of high voltage solar cells is an attractive way to use sunlight to power electrocatalysts for water oxidation, electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, and consumer electronics. Through careful molecular dye engineering and redox shuttle pairing, our group has reported a single-junction dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) employing, for the first time, an iron redox mediator (Fe(bpy)33+/2+) in conjunction with a novel wide band gap dye (RR9). This system generates a high photovoltage of 1.42 V. To the best of our knowledge, this system is the highest photovoltage achieved by a single-junction DSC device without metal oxide doping. The RR9/Fe(bpy)33+/2+ redox …

This dissertation aimed at filling the gap in literature …
The Effects Of Differing Optical Stimuli On Depth Perception In Virtual Reality, Mckennon B. Mcmillian
The Effects Of Differing Optical Stimuli On Depth Perception In Virtual Reality, Mckennon B. Mcmillian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is well documented that egocentric depth perception is underestimated in virtual reality more often than not. Many studies have been done to try and understand why this underestimation happens and what variables affect it. While this underestimation can be shown consistently the degree of underestimation can strongly differ from study to study, with as much as 68% to as low as 6% underestimation, Jones et al. (2011, 2008); Knapp(1999); Richardson and Waller (2007). Many of these same studies use blind walking as a tool to measure depth perception. With no standardized blind walking method for virtual reality existing differing …

Decentralized Detection With Correlated Gaussian Observations: Parallel And Tandem Networks With Two Sensors, Shailee Yagnik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Signal detection in cognitive radio involves the determination of presence or absence of a primary user signal so that the secondary user may opportunistically gain access when the spectrum is unoccupied. In decentralized sensing scheme, two or more secondary users sense the spectrum, process individual observation and then pass the quantized data to a fusion center where a decision with regard to which hypothesis being true, that is, a signal being present or absent, is made. In the second part of the thesis, we study Bayes error performance of two-sensor tandem network designed to detect the presence or absence of …
Application And Refinement Of Molecular Ecology Techniques For Amphibian Conservation, Stephanie Marie Burgess
Application And Refinement Of Molecular Ecology Techniques For Amphibian Conservation, Stephanie Marie Burgess
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wildlife conservation has become increasingly difficult due to habitat loss habitat fragmentation and land use change. Thus conservationists have embraced advances in molecular ecology such as landscape genetics and microbial bioinformatics that employ genetic techniques to further understand the relationship between individuals and their environment. In landscape genetics model inferences can be used to identify features that facilitate or resist gene flow providing a framework for anticipating the impacts of land use changes on a species’ ability to disperse. However the factors that affect the transferability of landscape genetics inferences are poorly understood and little is known about the effect …

Intramoleculer Hydrogen Bonding In Epoxide, Thiirane, Aziridine And Phosphirane Containing Cyclopentanols, Ben Edward Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A recent computational analysis of the stabilizing intramolecular OH· · · O contact in 1,2-dialkyl-2,3-epoxycyclopentanol diastereomers has been extended to thiiriane, aziridine and phosphirane analogues. Density functional theory (DFT), second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and CCSD(T) coupled-cluster computations with simple methyl and ethyl substituents indicate that electronic energies of the cis isomers are lowered by roughly 3 to 4 kcal mol−1 when the OH group of these cyclopentanol systems forms an intramolecular contact with the O, S, N or P atom on the adjacent carbon. The results also suggest that S and P can participate in these stabilizing intramolecular interactions …
The Influence Of Site Connectivity On Zooplankton Assemblage Dynamics Within The Lower Mississippi River Floodplain, Jarrod Sackreiter
The Influence Of Site Connectivity On Zooplankton Assemblage Dynamics Within The Lower Mississippi River Floodplain, Jarrod Sackreiter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Zooplankton are important components of the food web of such lotic systems. Although capable of motility, they are weak swimmers and their distribution and community composition across a floodplain is strongly affected by patterns of water flow and hydrologic connectivity. However, there has been little research on the zooplankton dynamics of large rivers, such as the Lower Mississippi River (LMR). From morphological identification of zooplankton across the connectivity gradient, I assessed the degree to which hydrologic connectivity acts as an explanatory factor influencing spatial and temporal variation in zooplankton assemblage structure. Second, I compared the use of morphological identification to …

The law of quadratic reciprocity is an important result in number theory. The purpose of this thesis is to present several proofs as well as applications of the law of quadratic reciprocity. I will present three proofs of the quadratic reciprocity. We begin with a proof that depends on Gauss's lemma and Eisenstein's lemma. We then describe another proof due to Eisentein using the $n$th roots of unity. Then we provide a modern proof published in 1991 by Rousseau. In the second part of the thesis, we present two applications of quadratic reciprocity. These include special cases of Dirichlet's theorem …
Bulky Thiolated Gold Nanomolecules: Synthesis, Characterization, Optical Properties, And Atomic Structure, Tanya Clorise Jones
Bulky Thiolated Gold Nanomolecules: Synthesis, Characterization, Optical Properties, And Atomic Structure, Tanya Clorise Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gold nanomolecules (NMs) have a distinct number of gold atoms and thiolate ligands, Aux(SR)y, with unique spectroscopic, electrochemical, and chiral properties which are dependent on “x” and “y”. The properties of NMs are dictated by the type of capping ligand. The overall structure, size, surface percentage of ligands, and structure of an entire gold NM is changed based on the type of ligand used to synthesize it. Ligand type, such as aliphatic, aromatic or bulky play a crucial role in determining the size and composition of such NMs. A NM’s composition and properties vary widely depending on the type of …

The Effects Of Market Fragmentation Around Corporate Events, Justin Steven Cox
The Effects Of Market Fragmentation Around Corporate Events, Justin Steven Cox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Part 1, I investigate the effects of market fragmentation in the liquidity formation of initial public offerings (IPOs). Recent exchange officials cite increases in market fragmentation as a hindrance to the liquidity formation in IPO trading. We find that IPOs are less fragmented at the start of IPO trading relative to later periods in the IPO secondary market. We also discover that more underpriced issues experience greater fragmentation, both lit and dark, at the start of IPO trading. Our study also examines the level of undisplayed liquidity in IPOs, finding more hidden trading at the start of IPO trading …

Vicar Victoria: Writing The Church Of England In Nineteenth-Century Fiction, Rachel Elizabeth Cason
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vicar Victoria: Writing the Church of England in Nineteenth-Century Fiction shows how the organizing force of the Anglican Church and the figure of the Anglican clergyman were used to interrogate social, legal, and historical developments in nineteenth-century fiction. The project outlines how authors reacted to events such as Pluralism reform, the opening of training schools for clergy, and the Oxford Movement. There was a growing importance of institutions (including new physical buildings and Anglican reform movements). Further, the clergy, pushed by the increased expectation to modernize and professionalize, became a specialist career, with raised training and performance requirements. As a …

Disturbing The Ecological Pastoral: An Examination Of Willa Cather's Fictional Spaces In My Ántonia And Death Comes For The Archbishop, Anne Carter Stowe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Willa Cather is universally lauded for her ability to render landscape into prose. Critics have observed for years that the landscape often functions as the main character in her fiction, or that her characters can easily be evaluated in terms of how deep and successful their relationships to the land are. In an attempt to evaluate Cather’s treatment of two different “Western” landscapes, I will focus first on My Ántonia, one of her most famous Nebraska novels, and second on Death Comes for the Archbishop, whose narrative unravels on the New Mexican landscape. I argue that Cather treats …
Damage Detection Using Destructive Testing Of A Reinforced Concrete Slab, Michael Edward Daves
Damage Detection Using Destructive Testing Of A Reinforced Concrete Slab, Michael Edward Daves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Visual inspection is one of the primary tools for evaluating the health of bridges as more reach or exceed their intended lifespan. Bridge deterioration must be monitored to ensure continued safety, so owners need maintenance reports to decide on corrective actions. Strategic repair can offer asset managers the benefit of saving money and time; thus, knowing where to locate and what type of repairs can be challenging when relying on visual techniques alone. A tool designed to aid bridge inspectors is the SHE^tm program, which quantitatively measures damage location and severity for any set of time data.
