Since plastics are nonbiodegradable, they have been associated with detrimental health impacts due to the leaching chemicals from the landfills and their accumulation in the natural and marine environment. Cellulose obtained from agricultural residues is a viable substitute because of its low density, biocompatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity, and a strong and stiff structure. However, the extraction of cellulose has been less exploited because of its insolubility in water and …

Biodegradable Biomaterials As Suitable Alternatives To Water Treatment Technologies, Most Farzana Yesmin Jan 2020

Biodegradable Biomaterials As Suitable Alternatives To Water Treatment Technologies, Most Farzana Yesmin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrates and phosphates are essential nutrients for plants growth. Their excess presence in water, however, could cause eutrophication affecting the water quality and altering the aquatic ecosystem. Algal blooms and the presence of toxins such as microcystin in freshwater bodies are hazardous to humans, animals, and wildlife. Conventional technologies such as ion exchange, distillation, reverse osmosis, and bioreactors aid immensely to remove nutrients; however, they are expensive. Furthermore, building new nitrate and phosphate treatment units, maintenance and post-disposal are costly too. In this regard, there exists an unmet need for alternative processes that are renewable and cost-effective to treat contaminated …

Kernel-Controlled Dqn Based Cnn Pruning For Model Compression And Acceleration, Romancha Khatri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Apart from the accuracy, the size of convolutional neural networks (CNN) models is another principal factor for facilitating the deployment of models on memory, power and budget constrained devices. However, conventional model compression techniques require human experts to setup parameters to explore the design space which is suboptimal and time consuming. Various pruning techniques are implemented to gain compression, trading off speed and accuracy. Given a CNN model [11], we propose an automated deep reinforcement learning [9] based model compression technique that can effectively turned off kernels on each layer by observing its significance on decision making. By observing accuracy, …

Employee Development And Turnover: A Moderated Mediation Model Of Employee Perceptions Of Development, Job Satisfaction, Supervisor Support, And Intent To Stay, Ryan Kasdorf Jan 2020

Employee Development And Turnover: A Moderated Mediation Model Of Employee Perceptions Of Development, Job Satisfaction, Supervisor Support, And Intent To Stay, Ryan Kasdorf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As employee turnover continues to be a major concern for organizations, there is increasing evidence that providing development opportunities can be an effective intervention to decrease voluntary turnover. I propose that an integrated theoretical framework of combining Organizational Support Theory (OST) and the Job Demands- Resources Theory (JD-R) is best suited to explain the relationship between employee development and turnover. Moreover, a moderated-mediation model is developed and tested, whereby the relationship between employee perceptions development (EPD) and intent to stay is mediated by job satisfaction, and this indirect relationship is moderated by perceived supervisor support. A large sample (N = …

In order to proffer theoretical basis for the design, safety evaluation and maintenance of pipelines, the failure analysis and mechanical behavior of buried API X65 steel pipeline perpendicularly crossing landslide area was investigated with the Finite …

Exploring Heterogeneous Phenotypes In Response To Stress, Heather S. Deter Jan 2020

Exploring Heterogeneous Phenotypes In Response To Stress, Heather S. Deter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work combines traditional microbiology with bioinformatic and synthetic biology approaches to study antibiotic tolerance. Antibiotic tolerance is a widespread phenomenon that facilitates antibiotic resistance and decreases the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment. Tolerance is distinct from antibiotic resistance, because tolerance is short term survival and typically results from phenotypic variations rather than genetic variation. The molecular mechanisms underlying tolerance are varied and debated in the literature. I have explored two intracellular processes related to tolerance, toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems (Chapter 2) and proteases (Chapter 4). Specifically, I focus on the ratio of antitoxin-to-toxin in type II TA systems, because type II …
