A New Sir Model With Mobility., Ciana Applegate
A New Sir Model With Mobility., Ciana Applegate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, a mobility-based SIR model is built to understand the spread of the pandemic. A traditional SIR model used in epidemiology describes the transition of particles among states, such as susceptible, infected, and recovered states. However, the traditional model has no movement of particles. There are many variations of SIR models when it comes to the factor of mobility, the majority of studies use mobility intensity or population density as a measure of mobility. In this paper, a new dynamical SIR model, including the spatial motion of three-type particles, is constructed and the long-time behavior of the first …
Ecological Differences In The Associations Between Air Pollution, Greenness, And Risk Of Stroke: The Regards Study., Daniel W. Riggs
Ecological Differences In The Associations Between Air Pollution, Greenness, And Risk Of Stroke: The Regards Study., Daniel W. Riggs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The adverse health effects of air pollution have long been recognized, with the majority of morbidity and mortality due to its effects on the cardiovascular system. Alternatively, living in areas with higher greenness has been found to be beneficial to a wide range of health outcomes. However, few studies have considered that these relationships may vary depending on the surrounding ecosystem. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effects of long-term exposure to air pollution and greenness on incidence of stroke, and how these relationships vary with the major ecological regions of the United States. We utilized the …
Role Of Machine Learning In Early Diagnosis Of Kidney Diseases., Mohamed Nazih Mohamed Ibrahim Shehata
Role Of Machine Learning In Early Diagnosis Of Kidney Diseases., Mohamed Nazih Mohamed Ibrahim Shehata
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches have been used as indispensable tools in modern artificial intelligence-based computer-aided diagnostic (AIbased CAD) systems that can provide non-invasive, early, and accurate diagnosis of a given medical condition. These AI-based CAD systems have proven themselves to be reproducible and have the generalization ability to diagnose new unseen cases with several diseases and medical conditions in different organs (e.g., kidneys, prostate, brain, liver, lung, breast, and bladder). In this dissertation, we will focus on the role of such AI-based CAD systems in early diagnosis of two kidney diseases, namely: acute rejection (AR) post …
Tiktok As Art: Visual Culture Art Education In An Afterschool Art Program, Chloe C. Morrell
Tiktok As Art: Visual Culture Art Education In An Afterschool Art Program, Chloe C. Morrell

denotations and connotations and their relationship to art. The participants were
members of the Boys and Girls Club of Nacogdoches who analyzed TikTok
videos using annotations and denotations, then in return created their own
individual videos inspired by an original TikTok video. The …
Growing Concerned: How Societal Stress Relates To Plants In The Home, Trenton W. Birdwell
Growing Concerned: How Societal Stress Relates To Plants In The Home, Trenton W. Birdwell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Design trends are constantly in flux, but the reasons why people prefer new trends are not readily apparent. This thesis brought together multiple aspects of interior design to investigate how design has changed. After a review of available studies, the researcher decided to focus on natural design in homes because this area has previous research upon which to build. This study compared data to examine how stress in America relates to plant imagery. The research questions asked what, if any, relationship exists between societal stress and the use of plants, plant-like objects, and window views.
Measures of stress included hospitalization, …
Mock Jurors' Recommended Sentences For Perpetrators Who Have Traumatic Experiences, Katherine West
Mock Jurors' Recommended Sentences For Perpetrators Who Have Traumatic Experiences, Katherine West
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Experiencing trauma can result in neurological and biological changes, precipitating long-term damage to the brain and body. A considerable proportion of incarcerated persons have reported that they have experienced some type of trauma (Stensrud, Gilbride, & Bruinekool, 2018). Using scenarios of hypothetical crimes of varying degrees of seriousness, this study explores whether disclosure of the perpetrator’s traumatic childhood experiences has an influence on the severity of the sentence that mock jurors would recommend for that perpetrator. The mock jurors’ trait empathy, Belief in a Just World, and their own traumatic experiences were assessed to determine whether these characteristics could account …
Cyberchondria And Covid-19 Health Threats Related To Attentional Bias And Safety Behaviors, Jacqueline J. Charles
Cyberchondria And Covid-19 Health Threats Related To Attentional Bias And Safety Behaviors, Jacqueline J. Charles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cyberchondria is described as excessively searching online for health information that ultimately increases worry and anxiety about one’s health (Starcevic et al., 2019). Research has demonstrated an increased attentional bias in anxious individuals for threat-related stimuli. Attentional bias for health information exacerbated by the frequent exposure to health threats during the COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to additional health-seeking behavior. The current study aimed to explore the potential relationship between COVID-19 health threats and cyberchondria level on attentional bias toward illness-related stimuli (symptom words) and the intent to perform safety behaviors while controlling for Trait Anxiety and Health Anxiety. Participants ( …
Effects Of Excessive Soil Phosphorus Accumulation On Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) Seedlings, Hannah C. Bays
Effects Of Excessive Soil Phosphorus Accumulation On Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) Seedlings, Hannah C. Bays
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many landowners in East Texas apply poultry litter to pastures as a source of nitrogen (N) for forage crops. After many years of repeated poultry litter application, soils can accumulate extremely high extractable phosphorus (P) concentrations, sometimes over 1000 mg kg-1 of plant available P. Landowners report the conversion of these pastures to loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations is often problematic, with poor seedling survival and abnormal tree growth. This study was conducted to assess the effects of excessive soil phosphorus on loblolly pine seedlings. An outdoor pot study was conducted using bare root seedlings and triple …
Listen To The River: Dolores, Ophelia, And Female Resistance In Opera, Daniel Aaron Barnidge
Listen To The River: Dolores, Ophelia, And Female Resistance In Opera, Daniel Aaron Barnidge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The music of female characters in the great masterpieces of opera often demonstrates resistance to and undermines the abuse they have historically received in opera plots. The Mexican folktale that my opera, The Tragedy of La Llorona, draws inspiration from plays on many of the same tropes historically found in female characters in opera including madness, sexuality, and lack of agency. This led to research into the portrayal of women in opera as part of my pre-compositional process and my desire to access this tale free from the traditional 'marianismo' and 'machismo' narratives it is associated with and which …
Exploration Of New Physics In B To Dstar Muon Neutrino Using A New Monte Carlo Tool, Quinn Campagna
Exploration Of New Physics In B To Dstar Muon Neutrino Using A New Monte Carlo Tool, Quinn Campagna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent experimental results in $B$ physics from Belle, BaBar and LHCb suggest new physics (NP) in the weak $b\to c$ charged-current and the $b\to s$ neutral-current processes. Here we focus on the charged-current case and specifically on the decay modes $\overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^- \bar{\nu}$ with $\ell = e$ and $\mu$. The world averages of the ratios $R_D$ and $R_D^{*}$ currently differ from the Standard Model (SM) predictions by $3.4\sigma$ while recently a new anomaly has been observed in the forward-backward asymmetry measurement, $A_{FB}$, in $ \overline{B}^0\to D^{*+}\mu^- \bar{\nu}$ decay. It is found that $\Delta A_{FB} = A_{FB}(B\to D^{*} \mu\nu) - A_{FB} …

In gene expression analysis and classification, feature selection is an important process of selecting the optimal subset of relevant features or useful data for further study and prediction. The main objective of feature selection is challenging due to the large search space, computational time, imbalanced samples, and quality of the selected drivers. It is necessary to construct a …
Adding Fuel To The Flames? Foreign Aid Bypassing And Political Support In Recipients, Obaida Shammama
Adding Fuel To The Flames? Foreign Aid Bypassing And Political Support In Recipients, Obaida Shammama
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Foreign aid scholars argue that donors outsource development assistance to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) because of poor governance and capacity constraints in aid recipients. But what shapes recipient citizens’ preference for aid delivery channels? How does foreign aid bypassing affect government support in recipients? Drawing on the logic of selective evaluation and micro-performance hypothesis, I contend that greater concern for quality of governance will positively influence support for foreign aid channeling through NGOs among aid recipients. Additionally, favorable attitude towards foreign aid bypassing will be negatively associated with government approval. Finally, an increase in foreign aid bypassing will be associated with …

"Agitate, Agitate, Agitate": Stories From Mississippi Valley, Parchman, And The Largest Mass Arrest Of Students In U.S. History, Katherine Aberle
"Agitate, Agitate, Agitate": Stories From Mississippi Valley, Parchman, And The Largest Mass Arrest Of Students In U.S. History, Katherine Aberle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the midst of the turbulent and sometimes violent unrest culminating in the fatal shootingsat Kent State University and Jackson State College in 1970, there is another story of black student activism that has been all but erased from public memory. In February 1970, the largest mass arrest of students in U.S. history took place at a relatively obscure small-town college in the Mississippi Delta. That winter, enrollment at Mississippi Valley State College was barely 2000 students, but on February 11, 1970, almost 900 students, nearly half the student population at the historically black college, would be arrested and find …
Bridging The Oppurtunity Gap Through Exploring The Perceptions Of Disadvantaged African American Students, Anesha Lashal Carter
Bridging The Oppurtunity Gap Through Exploring The Perceptions Of Disadvantaged African American Students, Anesha Lashal Carter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore student agency’s impact on the lives of successful African American adult students who once identified as being disadvantaged. The opportunity gap, formerly recognized as the achievement gap, continues to negatively affect low socioeconomic status African American students with limited social and cultural capital resources. There are unlimited studies which identify factors that fuel the opportunity gap (Ladson-Billings, 2006). However, many of these studies neglect to incorporate the voices of the stakeholders in which social and economic disparities impact the greatest (Anderson, 2018). This qualitative phenomenological study aims to address this research gap …
Perceptions Of Sexual Refusals: Not So Black And White, Lavina Ying Ho
Perceptions Of Sexual Refusals: Not So Black And White, Lavina Ying Ho
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sexual assault is an issue affecting approximately 1 in 5 women. Compared to White women, Black women report higher rates of lifetime rape, are at risk of developing physical/mental health issues post-assault (e.g., depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse), and are less likely to engage in help-seeking after sexual victimization. Research reveals the manner in which a woman refuses a sexual advance can influence a man’s perceptions of the genuineness of her refusal. Sexual refusals that are explicit (e.g., not wanting to have sex due to religious beliefs) are identified more quickly as violating a woman’s boundaries than sexual …

Mississippi Modernism: The River Valley And Race In American Culture, 1892-1945, William C. Palmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi Modernism looks to the Mississippi River Valley of the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first few decades of the twentieth century to analyze the ways individuals expressed and determined their experience in the changing world. By engaging with theories of modernity from Marshall Berman and the Black modernism of Houston A. Baker, Jr. this work proposes the Mississippi watershed as a region where individuals indulge in the processes of modernism remaking the environments, both urban and rural, surrounding them. By thinking about the “dry†and “wet†valleys envisioned by European settlers as Christopher Morris terms it, …
Measurement Of Inclusive Upsilon(4s) To Upsilon(1s) Decays At Belle Ii, Justin Wade Guilliams
Measurement Of Inclusive Upsilon(4s) To Upsilon(1s) Decays At Belle Ii, Justin Wade Guilliams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, a measurement of the branching fraction for inclusive $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays to $\Upsilon(1S)$, where $\Upsilon(1S)$ decays to $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$, is investigated. A similar study has not been conducted for decades. Such an inclusive measurement may be compared to the sum of exclusive branching fractions in order to check the completeness of the known exclusive decays. A disparity between the measured exclusive decays and the inclusive measurement would be suggestive of additional decay modes that are accessible beyond naive expectations. This analysis is further extended to include measurements of …

Lightweight sandwich structures are being used in aeronautics, marine, automotive, and offshore structural applications considering their high specific strength and stiffness along with energy absorption features. Sandwich structures comprise of face sheets typically made of aluminum or fiber-reinforced composites bonded to core materials like metallic foams, honeycomb, polymeric foams or balsa wood having a cellular structure. One main limitation of composite material face sheet is the absence of fibers in thickness direction, which greatly reduces damage tolerance and impact resistance. Current research is focused on investigating the dynamic behavior of sandwich structures having composite laminates with 3D reinforcement as face …
Teaching In A Remediation Nation: Exploring Journalism And Mass Communication Faculty Perceptions Of Their Professional Practice, Andrew Mark Abernathy
Teaching In A Remediation Nation: Exploring Journalism And Mass Communication Faculty Perceptions Of Their Professional Practice, Andrew Mark Abernathy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research shows many new college students may be remedial in English language arts or mathematics (Jaggers & Bickerstaff, 2018). For faculty in journalism and mass communication (JMC) fields, teaching struggling student writers can be especially challenging as these students may not have the fundamental knowledge to build applied writing skills upon. Thus, this lack of readiness for collegiate writing poses challenges to not only these students’ academic success, but also their transition into media professions. Embedded remediation—an alternative to traditional, prerequisite remediation—is one strategy that JMC faculty can use to support struggling student writers. This dissertation explores how JMC faculty …
