The Politics Of Being A Black Southern Belle, Latrice M. Johnson
The Politics Of Being A Black Southern Belle, Latrice M. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“The Politics of Being a Black Southern Belle” aims to examine media representations of Black womanhood and femininity. This thesis particularly focuses on how Black women redefine the southern belle. Film and television depictions of a national (implicitly white) femininity and womanhood have historically excluded Black women. To illuminate this history, the first chapter primarily provides background on historical representations of Black women in film. American standards of womanhood and femininity have been defined according to hegemonic culture—a culture predicated on race, class, and gender. The second chapter moves into an analysis of how Black women redefine the southern belle …

The uniformity of all formulations met the United States Pharmacopeia criteria. …
Evaluating The Relationship Between Vegetation Types And Downscaled Surface Soil Moisture Data, Anupiya Vidarshana Ellepola
Evaluating The Relationship Between Vegetation Types And Downscaled Surface Soil Moisture Data, Anupiya Vidarshana Ellepola
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Remote sensing systems such as multispectral and radar imaging can provide detailed information about soil moisture levels, vegetation cover, and topography. These data can be used to identify areas of high soil moisture, monitor changes in soil moisture over time, and assess the impact of human activities on watersheds. A commonly used system in orbit for monitoring soil moisture is the Soil Moisture Active Passive Mission (SMAP). For SMAP and all spaceborne systems, one of the major limitations for users to implement satellite-based data is the coarse resolution of the pixels (~9 km). Downscaling approaches are introduced by many researchers …

Crafting Inclusive Dei Spaces At The University Of Mississippi, Thomas Lee
Crafting Inclusive Dei Spaces At The University Of Mississippi, Thomas Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Conversations relating to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) have taken higher education communities by storm as several right-leaning states have recently banned Critical Race Theory and other DEI related topics from the educational curriculum. Nevertheless, several universities, including the University of Mississippi, have embraced DEI programming and initiatives in recent years in hopes of creating “equitable opportunities” for all community members. And while much of this work has been praised, it has also been met with criticism from external community partners.
The University of Mississippi must ensure that its DEI practices create meaningful, non-divisive spaces where all stakeholders remain engaged. …

Reimagining The Radical: Gender, Genre, And Anti-Fascism In Women's Writing At Mid-Century, Allison Nick
Reimagining The Radical: Gender, Genre, And Anti-Fascism In Women's Writing At Mid-Century, Allison Nick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation looks at the work of four women writers—Martha Gellhorn, Elizabeth Bowen, Pearl S. Buck, and Rebecca West—who are united in their transnational commitment to critiquing the global rise of fascism and the fraught democratic imperatives of their own countries. “Reimagining the Radical” focuses on the temporal gap between modernism and postmodernism and is inspired by work from scholars like Marina MacKay, Lyndsey Stonebridge, and Beryl Pong to claim and define mid-century literature. By rethinking the bounds of modernism, “Reimagining the Radical” also seeks to fill the gaps in feminist history—between the suffragism of the early 20th century and …
The World Wide Web Of Women: A Case In Favor Of Global Feminist Coalitions In The Information Age, Hannah S. Phillips
The World Wide Web Of Women: A Case In Favor Of Global Feminist Coalitions In The Information Age, Hannah S. Phillips
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to argue that online feminist coalitions can be both locally specific and globally accessible. Postcolonial feminist theorist Chandra Talpade Mohanty in her 1984 article “Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and Colonial Discourses,” argues that there is no real evidence to classify all women as a “Woman” because cultural differences and imbalances of power create a myriad of experiences that cannot be homogenized. However, Mohanty is not arguing that women do not have individual experiences with gender injustice. On the contrary, all women have experiences with gender injustice; these experiences are simply all not the …

Hiv-1 Tat And Neuroendocrine Aging: Potential Benefits Of Neurosteroid-Based Therapy To Attenuate Premature Age-Related Comorbidities In The Era Of Antiretroviral Therapy, Alaa Nader Qrareya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary objectives of this dissertation are to assess the interaction between human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) trans-activator of transcription (Tat) protein and neuroendocrine status on the pathology of Tat/age-related comorbidities and to investigate the potential benefit of hormonal therapy in attenuating Tat/age insults. The advent of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has increased longevity among people living with HIV (PLWH). However, cART cannot fully eradicate viral reservoirs within the central nervous system (CNS). Therefore, ~50-60% of virally-suppressed PLWH experience neurological and psychological sequelae called “neuroHIV”. Moreover, PLWH are more vulnerable to developing premature age-related comorbidities. In PLWH, hypogonadism is common …
Affording The Value Of Technology: Normalcy And Moral Frameworks, Mitchell Roberts
Affording The Value Of Technology: Normalcy And Moral Frameworks, Mitchell Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is often held that technology is value neutral. That is, technology is merely a means to an end and has no intrinsic moral worth. However, as some theorists have demonstrated, this view of technology may be mistaken. One theorist, Michael Klenk, offers what he calls an “affordance theory of embodied values” as one principled way of understanding how technological artifacts embody moral values. Under this view, artifacts embody affordances, or possibilities for action. These affordances are then judged in order to assess the moral status of the artifact which embeds them. In this paper, I develop one problem with …
Detection Of Rayleigh Faded Signal Using Two Distributed Sensors, Sayantan Saha
Detection Of Rayleigh Faded Signal Using Two Distributed Sensors, Sayantan Saha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Distributed detection(DD) is an area of interest in the Cognitive Radio(CR) Network domain. With the help of geographically dispersed sensors and a Fusion Center(FC) (i.e. the network element which generates the global network decision), a DD system can determine the presence or absence of a primary user signal. This prevents any harmful interference by a secondary user who is trying to gain access to the unoccupied spectrum opportunistically. DD system gained its popularity in spectrum analysis due to the limited bandwidth of the reporting channels between the sensors and their fusion center.

On Intersections Of Long Cycles And Paths In K-Connected Graphs, Philip Kains
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the cardinality of the intersection of two longest cycles is inspired by Scott Smith, who conjectured that in a k-connected graph, two longest cycles meet in at least k vertices. Grőtschel and Nemhauser, Grőtschel, and Stewart and Thompson proved Smith’s Conjecture for 2 ≤ k ≤ 8, and for general k, Chen, Faudree, and Gould proved that in a k-connected graph, two longest cycles meet in at least c0k3/5 vertices, where c0 ≈ 0.2615. In this dissertation, we study the intersection of two long cycles or two long paths passing through a specified linear forest subgraph in which …
