In studying and teaching history, I have been convinced that the transportation facilities of a country have helped or hindered its political, industrial and commercial development. In this thesis, I have endeavored to show the value of the railroads of Kentucky during the political conflict known as the Civil War. I have consulted a number of historical records and have tried to select from them, the most convincing proofs. Articles consulted are listed in the bibliography at the close. Butter is the most important product of the dairy industry. Therefore, experimental work which indicates how the quality of butter may be improved is of considerable value. The present methods of handling cream and making butter are largely responsible for the mediocre quality of much of the American butter. The quality of the cream is not in the control of the buttermaker, except as he may improve it through impressing the producers with the importance of producing high grade cream. The name inductivity, or dielectric capacity, or specific inductive capacity is given to the ratio between the capacities of two condensers of the same size and shape, one of them filled with the specified dielectric, and the other an air condenser. The inductive capacity of dry air at standard conditions is usually taken as the standard. Therefore, the measurement of the specific inductive capacity of any given dielectric resolves itself into the measurement of the capacity of a condenser with the given material as dielectric.

The tendency during the last few years has been to use more and more of the legumes for feeding dairy cows. Just a few years ago (1)”Dairymen near the Yakima Valley, Washington state, fed their cows nothing but alfalfa hay during the winter. The cows received 40 to 50 pounds of alfalfa per cow per day and produced from 6,000 to 7, 000 pounds of milk per year. A Guernsey cow gave 20 pounds of milk per day, four and one-half months after calving and have received no feed but alfalfa hay for two months previous to that time. The …

It is not the primary purpose of this present work to treat the problem of the evolution of behavior, but rather to give an analysis of animal behavior as observed. These observations may appear as simple tests, but they make possible a new way to measure the capacity and determine the rate of learning by the animal mind. Progress in learning takes place through increased variety and precision of the movements brought about by stimulation and is very clearly observed in Amoeba, where we find the production of varied movements and the resolution of one physiological state into another. Soon after the atomic theory was established, it was found that the plant uses as sources of food not only the air and water, but also different constituents of the soil, dissolved in the soil moisture—the mineral nutrients. Ashes of different burned plants were analyzed; they were found to vary with the soil in which the plants were grown as well as with the species of the plant and the special organ from which the ashes were obtained. This thesis gives the results of a study of the influence of the size and design of nails on their efficiency with respect to driving and pulling from various species of wood. The study was made at the Forest Products Laboratory of the United States Forest Services in cooperation with the American Steel and Wire Company, primarily to compare two types of nails, a common nail with plain head and regular point, and a special nail with a larger checkered head and a longer “diamond” point. In the summer of 1921, Professor E.J. Petry noted an unusually severe uredinial infection on a small patch of Spartina cynosuroides (L) Roth, along the Chicage and northwestern right-of-way near Brookings, South Dakota. Along with this occurred an aecidial infection on Steironema ciliatum (L) Raf. Since the Steironema was small and mingled with the Spartina in places, a connection between the telial stage of the latter with the aecidial attack was trongly suspected. The infection occurred only on the lower leaves of the Steironema and this heightened the probabili8ty of infection from the teliospore sporadia of the Spartina which lay …

The expansion of the dairy industry to all parts of our country has caused further search for protein feeds suitable for dairy cattle, both from the standpoint of the cow, and as an economical feed. The dairy farmer has been urged to produce roughages high in protein, but these usually do not suffice to make a balanced ration for high producing cows. Oil meal, cottonseed meal, and gluten meal have long been used as supplements in grain mixtures and have given satisfactory results.
