The operation of Geiger-Mueller tubes requires D.C. voltages ranging up to two kilo-volts and currents of the order of a few hundred micro-amperes. There are two types of voltage supplies which can be used for furnishing these high D.C. voltages. In the conventional high-voltage supply, the output voltage is obtained by rectifying and filtering the high A.C. voltage obtained from an iron core step-up transformer operating from the sixty cycle transformer for high voltages. Practical transformers therefore are cumbersome and heavy and are capable of furnishing currents much larger than those usually required.

SOuth Dakota is one of the most important beef cattle producing states in the nation, ranking fifth on the average between 1943-1947. The number of beef cattle in SOuth Dakota has been increasing during the past several years. Most parts of the state are well adapted to beef production, especially the range area in the western part where extensive grass lands are available. The twenty-two western counties of South Dakota, the portion of the state generally considered as the range area, comprise 37, 130 square miles or forty-eight percent of the total acreage of the state. Introduction: Those who are responsible for the management of antelope, range livestock, and the range seek to maintain such a balance that al may thrive and reproduce. This is inevitably a difficult objective since the balance in numbers of antelope and livestock may be changed annually, but range flora changes only in long-time cycles. Therefore, the balance between the wild and domestic species and the range must be adjusted frequently by range and livestock management. Since artificial insemination has become a reality and the potentialities of ova transfer are being investigated by several research workers, it seems reasonable to assume that some attention should be directed toward gathering information regarding the bacterial flora of the normal bovine uterus. Both artificial insemination and ova transfer require the insertion of foreign bodies or instruments into the uterus. When such instruments enter this organ, there is always the possibility of introducing various kinds of bacteria. It is the purpose of this paper to report a study of the influence that several recommended and experimental herbicides have on the flora and fauna of the soil. It is also being to establish the usefulness of a simple procedure outlined by Nelson in making preliminary determination of this type. A procedure requiring a minimum of equipment and time should be of use in revealing this one phase of herbicidal action of chemicals before general recommendations for field use are made to the public.
