Colchicine-treated seedlings of a true-breeding variety of Sorghum vulgare Pers. were found to differ in appearance from the untreated checks while retaining the original chromosome number (1,8). Some of the mutant plants bred true for the changed characters in succeeding generations. Cytological examination by Harpstead et al (2) showed no abnormal pairing relationships or detectable chromosomal abnormality in the meiotic stages of the treated material, the untreated material, or their F1 crosses. From these findings it was postulated that colchicine caused a somatic reduction of the chromosomes together with concurrent mutagenic effects and subsequent restoration to the diploid number. A …

Alfalfa seedling rot in South Dakota, as in other parts of the United States and the world, is a destructive alfalfa disease. In many fields its abundance prevents the establishment of adequate alfalfa stands, requiring the use of excessive amounts of seed or chemical seed treatments to establish such stands. The absence or near absence of seedling rot in other fields sown with normal amounts of seed often results in stands that are too dense for best growth of plants under semi-arid conditions. The sociology of religion, however, has dealt mainly with the larger, more liberal denominations, leaving the many, smaller religious associations relatively unexplored. In South Dakota several cases of injury to wheat from airplane application of 2,4-D by commercial applicators were reported. Some 120,000 acres of wheat were sprayed in South Dakota by commercial airplane applicators in 1953. Maximum sustained livestock production can be obtained only through proper grazing practices on the range and efficient feeding practices in the feedlot. Adjusting livestock numbers to prevent overuse of the range resource is the principle problem in securing purpose of South Dakota’s rangelands. There is considerable variation in the intensity of grazing on rangelands in the state. The number and nature of stamens in flowers of the Curcurbitaceae has long been a controversial problem among students of floral morphology. Naudin 1885, according to Chakvarty (2), thought that 3 was the basic number of stamens in this family. Naudin imagined a 2-2-1 stamen arrangement where 2 is a complete stamen (tetrasporangiate), and 1 is a half-stamen (bisporangiate). In the few species of this family which have five stamens, he believed that the two complete stamens split resulting in what he called four half-stamens. Observed segregation ratios for qualitative traits in tetraploid alfalfa have been interpreted on both disomic and tetrasomic modes of inheritance. In fact, some tetrasomic ratios cannot be distinguished from disomic ones (13) without intensive analysis. For quantitative traits, arbitrarily established segregation ratios in themselves are incapable of interpretation with respect to mode of inheritance. Progressive change and fitness in species depend upon continuous variation; analogously, it may be reasonably inferred that artificial plant improvement too, rests upon the exploitation of continuous variation.
