Egg sales provide producers with a fairly steady income throughout the year. This helps the producer over periods of low income and high expense resulting from thr seasonal nature if income from major cash crops. More than one-half of the eggs produced in South Dakota are shipped to out-of-state markets. In 1955 cash income derived from egg sales by producers was $28,116,000 or 6.1 per cent of South Dakota's net farm income. Poultry and poultry products ranked fourth in importance of income derived from livestock and livestock products during the period from 1952 to 1955 in South Dakota. According to …

The Agricultural Act of 1956, which contains the Soil Bank Act, was enacted in the spring of 1956. The soil bank program is divided into two phases, the acreage reserve and the conservation reserve. The acreage reserve is available to farmers with acreage allotments for the basic commodities, which are wheat and corn in South Dakota. The farmer takes part in the acreage reserve program by signing a one year agreement and reducing his acreage below the assigned allotment on his farm. In return for taking the land out of production, the farmer will receive a payment for each acre …

During the weather history of the Upper James Valley of South Dakota the limiting factor in crop production in 60 percent of the years has been soil moisture (15). Droughts of one kind or another are common experience in the lives of South Dakota farmers. If we cannot change the climatic factors we must be able to produce crops under existing conditions. Some confusion and misunderstanding is evident as to the essential tools required for vocational agricultural and industrial arts shops. An attempt will be made in this study to suggest a basic tool list for an average vocational agricultural shop in South Dakota. Some lay people who visit the vocational agricultural shop are surprised that certain equipment generally found in industrial arts shops, like wood shapers, wood turning lathes or thickness planners, has been omitted. Farm leasing arrangements are important in eastern South Dakota. In 1954, 48 percent of all farm land in that area was farmed by tenants. In the entire state, 46 percent of all agricultural land was rented and 68 percent of the operators leased all or part of the land they operated. Between 1880 and 1940 the trend in farm tenancy was steadily increasing. While there has been a decline in the percentage of tenancy since 1940, this appears to be due to the very favorable period of production and prices. A bizarre organism was isolated in 1953 in a Castaneda blood culture flask in an attempt to determine the cause of septicemia in a child. It was discovered that the organism causing this septicemia was morphologically and physiologically similar to one of the organisms causing rat bite fever, which to this time had never been isolated in South Dakota. It was impossible under the circumstances to make any positive identification of the organism. Microscopic slides were saved with the expectation that circumstances would become favorable for research with the suspected organism, Streptocaillus monilformis. The young person who attempts to begin farming today is confronted with a series of major problems. The trend toward larger farm units, a move to take advantage of the economies of large scale operation, affects the beginning operator in two ways. The beginning operator must compete for land with established operators who are seeking to enlarge their farm units; and for the beginner to make his operation profitable he is required to assemble a greater acreage than would have been necessary in the past. The farmer today is in an unfavorable position economically. The costs of farming have increased steadily over the past several years, while farm product prices have declined. According to statistics published by the Federal Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, South Dakota farmers in 1956 paid 115 percent of 1947-49 prices for goods and services received, while receiving approximately 75 percent of 1947-49 prices for farm products. Because of this “cost-price squeeze,” the farm operator must continually adjust his management practices to changing conditions if he is to maintain or increase his income and level of living. The butterfat produced over the greater part of the state of South Dakota has been sold by farmers largely in the form of farm separated cream because of the low density of milk suppliers and limitations imposed by road and climatic conditions. Much of the butter manufactured from this cream has been of poor quality and adjustments which improve quality have been slow in taking place. For several years, the dairy industry has been making an adjustment to consumer demand. The per capita consumption of butter declined from 17.3 pounds in 1939 to 9.2 pounds in 1955. Along with this change has come an adjustment in the number of creameries operating in South Dakota. The number of plants decreased from 120 in 1942 to 73 in 1957. The largest decline was among the plants producing less than 500,000 pounds of butter annually. Two basic approaches to this situation have been taken by the dairy industry. Nitrogen, of all the soil derived nutrients, is the element most commonly deficient in Chernozem and Chestnut soils. Nitrogen bearing commercial fertilizer, therefore, is required for maximum crop yields on nearly all Midwestern farms where these soils occur. For the most economical use of fertilizers it is desirable to have the soil tested in the laboratory to determine the correct analysis and rate of fertilizer to be applied. Reasonably accurate tests for measuring the amount of phosphorus and potassium available to plants have been in common use for many years. Entomologists and geneticists have been interested in the resistance shown by houseflies, Musca domestica L., to DDT. The widespread use of this insecticide immediately following the Second World War, and the subsequent wide-spread resistance to its effect by several species of insects has stimulated much research involving the chemical and genetic roles in resistance. In 1950 and 1951, attention was called to the poor control of houseflies achieved by DDT at Brookings, South Dakota. Study results indicated a very high level of resistance. Animals infected with Leptospira do not always display the acute signs of the disease but may have a sub-clinical chronic form which may go unnoticed. These infected animals may continue to infect the healthy animals which they contact. The presence of the disease has been demonstrated in almost every state either by the presence of antibodies, identification of the organisms in tissue section, or by culture isolation. There is little published material aviliable concerning cattle grub spiracles other than descriptions of the external surface of the stigmal plate. The representative species of Oestroid larvae studied by the early European morphologist was the northern cattle grub, Hypoderma bovis (L.) and their published conclusions of its spiracular exploration were meager. Major components of the spiracle such as a common atrium, stigmal plate and the hollow plates connecting these two structures were described to the extent necessary to establish differences between larval groups.

Alfalfa in South Dakota as in other parts of the United States and the world is adversely affected by a disease known as Blackstem. This disease is induced by one or more fungi or bacteria whose abundance depends as much on the high susceptibility of the current alfalfa varieties as on the weather. Differences in plant susceptibility to one of these microorganisms, Ascochyta imperfect, has already been shown to occur within and between alfalfa varieties or strains. During the last six years research has been conducted on the use of antibiotics in the preservation of foods for human consumption. The first published statement suggesting the use of antibiotics in the preservation of foods was made by Morris B. Jacobs in 1944. The first commercial use of antibiotics in the processing of perishable food became possible on an interstate basis on November 30, 1955. On that date the Pure Food, Drug and Cosmetic Administration approved Aureomycin chlortetracycline for use “in or on uncooked poultry.” The first antibiotics had narrow-spectra and showed little promise. The nitrogen status of South Dakota soils was once very high, but due to our intensive type of farming, the supply of this essential element is rapidly being exhausted. It has been estimated that thirty to forty percent of the original nitrogen content has been lost as a result of farming, erosion, and various other factors. This continuous removal of nitrogen, primarily through cropping has caused pronounced and widespread nitrogen deficiency symptoms to show up in many areas of the state. In the past five year, there has been a trend in Pipestone County, Minnesota, to close the one-room country schools and send these rural children to consolidated town schools. Up to about five years ago, there were many rural schools in the county educating these young children up through the sixth grade, then the children would start Junior High School in one of the four towns in the county with high school facilities: namely Ruthton, Jasper, Edgerton and Pipestone. According to the various definitions, physical fitness is a qualitative element composed of many factors; so in order to properly evaluate physical fitness, it would be necessary to measure all of the various factors. It is generally conceded that a test is needed that will be sensitive to the effects upon the organism of lack of exercise, of faculty health habits, and of organic drains.
