Organisms of the genus Listeria have stimulated a great deal of interest as a result of their pathogenicity and affinity for the central nervous system. The clinical condition produced by this organism is known as listeriosis, or in ruminants as “circling disease”. The organism was described by Murray, Webb and Swann in 1926 as the causative agent of an eqizootic infection in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs. Their observations showed that the disease produced emaciation, abundant exudate in serous cavities, necrotic foci in and on various organs, and a marked increase in monocytes circulating in the blood stream. The process of birth normally follows a set pattern. The main steps in chronological order are: labor, opening of the cervix, and delivering the young. The cervix serves an important function in reproduction. The cervix is the constricted portion separating the uterus and the vagina, and consists primarily of thick connective tissues especially constructed in folds forming a hollow tube. Through the cervix passes sperm, menstrual debris and in pregnancy the newborn. During pregnancy a mucous plug forms in the cervix and keeps out foreign material and bacteria. The occurrence of selenium in soils of the United States and its cinnection with a disease of livestock originally called selenium poisoning , is well established. The states of North Dakota and South Dakota have both reported areas of land on which the disease occurs. In 1954, soil samples (from areas in South Dakota in which there is solenium poisoning) we've brought to the South Dakota State College Experiment Stot1on for analysis. A seedling disease has been observed throughout the flax-growing areas of South Dakota for a number of years. The importance of this disease has probably been overlooked, however, because of the sporadic and unpredictable serious outbreaks; but in recent years the disease has reached epiphytotic proportions and hundreds if acres have been destroyed and plowed under. In some fields, stands have been so severely thinned that weeds have become a serious problem and yields of flax have been markedly reduced. The object or intent of this investigation was to make a study of comparative costs of heating homes in the city of Brookings. Six different fuels or methods of firing of these fuels were compared in the two main categories of home heating; hot water radiators and warm air furnaces. The investigation was not intended to increase the efficiency of any specific installation. However, the efficiencies of several of the atomizing oil burners wore increased considerably by changes in the air settings which should have been made by the installer when the furnace was originally installed.

The fact that common feeds used in swine rations, especially grains and plant protein supplements, are lacking in calcium, vitamin D and in some cases phosphorus, accounts in part for the appearance of rickets and kindred deficiency symptoms under many practical conditions. The use of commercial fertilizers has become an accepted practice in American agriculture. Among nitrogenous fertilizers, urea possesses characteristics which make it suitable for use in mixed gods and desirable for direct application to soils requiring only nitrogen. Urea is a concentrated fertilizer usually containing about 45% nitrogen. This high proportion of nitrogen is higher than for any other commercial solid nitrogenous fertilizer material. Often urea is cheaper than other forms of nitrogen per pound of plant food when transportation is an appreciable part of the total fertilizer cost. The effect of other climatological factors during the growing season is often apparent. The beef cattle industry is one og the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Services (1956), there were 1,492,000 beef cows and yearling beef heifers on the farms and ranches in South Dakota as of January 1, 1957.
